Ruka had had enough of walls.
They were everywhere, left, right, over, under, and constantly in the way. For a boy who had grown up with the sky for a roof, a castle like Hogwarts could get incredibly overwhelming very quickly.
That was exactly why Ruka found himself strolling through the Grounds of Hogwarts, barefoot along the Lake. It was beautiful, darkly reflecting the midday sun above, like it was hiding a whole other world underneath.
Which, judging by the tentacles that occasionally poked through the water surface, it probably was.
Hogwarts was so different from the fields and forests of Ireland he had grown up in, and yet so similar in a lot of ways. Nature was all around, even if you sometimes forgot about it while sleeping in a soft bed, eating off a shiny table, and walking across carpeted flooring.
Walking along the Lake like this, it gave him a sense of home and a tiny twinge of longing for the nights spent under the stars, next to a playful fire.
He sighed as he picked up a small rock and tossed it into the lake, watching the waves fanning out from where it hit the water.
A part of him expected one of the tentacles to toss it back at him, but the rock stayed underneath in the hidden world.
"Wanna be my audience?" he asked the hidden sea creatures as he picked up a loose branch and carefully started swirling it between dainty fingers. He missed doing performances with his dad, but at Hogwarts there was no need for them; Food was put on the table, no matter how many hours he spent or didn't spend performing for a coin on the streets.
He tiptoed in a semi-circle, swifly picking up a second branch to twirl around in his other hand. Ruka was small and skinny but that also allowed him to be quick on his feet, and he managed to put in a few jumps and turns as he kept twirling the two branches all around him.
Typically they would be on fire, but he didn't know any fire spells and wasn't even sure if he was allowed to light one on the Grounds, so the bare branches had to do.
He continued his impromptu performance for quite a while, until the presence of a girl with a Hufflepuff sigil on her uniform startled him enough to make him drop both branches. "Sorry," he said awkwardly, shuffling to pick the branches up before dropping them again when he realised that there was no use in taking them with him. "Was I in your way? I didn't hear anybody coming along here!"

Cassiopeia had always heard many stories about the Hogwarts Ground from her older siblings and cousins. Especially about the lake, at which her sister Calliope loved to spend every free minute of hers. Studying the various sea creatures, from the giant 'Tentacle Monster' as she affectionately called it, to the small fish in the cold water of the lake.
So it was no wonder, that the lake was one of the first places, Cassiopeia wanted to visit and today was a truly perfect day. The sun warmed her tanned skin as she made her way to the shore of the lake.
For a moment she just stood there and took in the view of the dark lake water that contrasted beautifully with the bright blue of the sky.
'It must be truly wonderful to spend the night here.', she thought and imagined how the bright stars would look, reflected by the water of the lake.
She followed a small path around the lake's shore for a few minutes, until a small figure entered her sight.
It was a skinny boy with two small branches in his hand, twirling around. To Cassiopeia it looked like he was dancing and she just watched his elegant movements in awe, careful to not disturb him by making a noise.
Suddenly he dropped the branches and their eyes met.
"Huh? No, no need to apologize.", Cassiopeia assured him and raised her hands, palms showing towards him. "I didn't want to disturb you, you looked like you a little lost were in your own world.", she explained, a little embarrassed that she had been caught staring at this unfamiliar student.

Ruka was used to having an audience, normally, but the rusling of leafs in the wind and the gentle pitterpatter of the water had caught him lost in a trance, so the appearance of the girl caught him more off guard than he would have liked to admit.
He grinned and shook his head, cheeks flaming with light embarrassment.
"Don't worry," he said gently, moving a bit closer so he didn't need to raise his voice to talk to the girl. He thought he may have seen her before, maybe at the Sorting Ceremony, but he was sure they hadn't talked before. "I always get a bit lost doing this, but... I wasn't really doing it with a purpose so it's fine." He chuckled and shrugged his shoulders, casually twirling his Gryffindor robe around his arms for the mere sake of having something to do.
Being someone who grew up around strangers, he still found it strange that he was able to get this awkward around kids his own age. His father had been right in saying that Ruka needed to be properly socialised.
He cleared his throat and slowly stuck out his arm to shake the girls hand. "I'm Ruka," he said, smiling with a gleeful twinkle in his eyes. "I was just exploring the Grounds and got a bit caught up with, well, that. I swear you didn't interrupt me. I was actually kind of hoping to bump into someone." He shrugged his shoulders again and sighed, sitting down in the grass and offering the girl to join him. "I didn't think it was possible with how bursting full the castle is, but it can get a bit lonely and suffocating at the same time."

Cassiopeia looked at the boy that was now standing a little closer to her with curiostity evident in her eyes. She didn't remember ever having talked to him before but she in her memory was a faint picture of the skinny boy with the blond-ish hair at the sorting ceremony.
From the emblem on his robe she could also see which house he had been sorted int.
Gold and red with a lion on it...
Gryffindor.
Just as she wanted to ask him for his name, he had already introduced himself. His name was unlike any she had ever heard and it also didn't sound very english in her opinion. "Ruka? That is an interesting name.", she told him and took his extended hand, shaking it lightly. "Well at home it is just as full, but on the other hand I know everything and everyone in and out. Here I barely know anyone.", she stated, eyes softening at the thought of her home, filled with loud chattering and the smell of her mother's beloved apple pie. A moment after he offered her to join him on the grass, she sat down on the ground next to the boy
"By the way, I am Cassie."

Ruka laughed a little at the comment the girl made about his name. It was true, he didn't think he'd ever heard someone with a name quite like his, but then again, nobody probably had a dad quite like his either.
"My dad has a stange sense of humour," he explained, grinning from ear to ear as Cassie sat down next to him. "Our last name is Tân. It's also Welsh for fire. My dad's mum was from Bulgaria, and he told me Ruka is bulgarian for 'Hand'. He calls me his little Fire Hand sometimes. Ironic, because my first sign of magic was, well, fire coming from my hands." He laughed gleefully and leaned back on his elbows as he looked across the Lake for a moment. A tentacle seemed to wave at them, and he childishly waved back, hoping that Cassie wouldn't find him strange.
"You have a big family then?" he asked, looking at the girl next to him with his eyebrows raised in interest. It had only ever been his dad and him, and he'd always wondered what it would have been like to grow up with both parents, maybe living grandparents, and a few siblings to play with in a nice house with a garden.
His life would have sure been a lot different.
He wondered how many siblings Cassie had, whether they were older or younger than her, or maybe even both, but he didn't want to ask just yet; they'd only just met and he didn't want to make her feel interrogated.
Instead he focused on her name, the way she had done on his. "Cassie," he mused, pulling his knees close to his chest as he twirled his right index finger around a lone daisy between them. "Is it short for something? Cassandra, maybe?"

The boy next to her laughed and that made Cassiopeia smile as well. "Fire from your hands? That sure sounds like a lot of stress for your parents.", she chuckled and pushed a strand of her dark locks out of her face. She could only imagine how difficult it must have been for his parents, handling a child with fire coming out of its hands. "The first magical thing I ever did, was shrink my Mom's teapots.", she told him and the thought of the stinky herbal tea she had been supposed to drink, made her furrow her brows. She shuddered.
Then Cassie saw a big tentacle arm popping up over the surface of the dark water and the boy next to her, waved at it. She looked back at the tentacle and shot it a smile, not that it would notice, but she wanted to be polite.
"Big family, yeah you could say that. I only have two siblings, but we all live together with my cousins and they are pretty much like siblings to me.", she explained, leaning back, until her back was on the ground and her head laid on the hood of her robe on top of the soft grass. She still remembered how devastated everybody had been, when the oldest of the bunch, her brother Apollonius had told them, that he was moving out.
The young Hufflepuff turned her head, so she was facing Ruka again, when he started speaking to her again. "Yes it is short for something, but not Cassandra. I am named Cassiopeia, you know, after the star constellation, or rather the queen in the greek mythology.", she laughed.

Ruka hummed in amusement, shaking his head as he looked at Cassie. "My dad and I were in the middle of a street performance when it happened," he explained with a grin, thinking back to that day. They had been able to afford bread and jam for the both of them for a week afterwards! "We were doing a fire show, so everyone thought it was part of the act. My dad isn't magic but he says my mum is, and he's seen her enchanting fires before." He turned his head and watched as Cassie lay down, not thinking twice before he also lay back on the soft grass, green eyes sparkling up at the sky.
The sun was burning in the sky like the fire they were talking about, and the few clouds they could see were hanging low. "He didn't really know what to do about it, but he did his best to help me not spontaneously set everything on fire" He chuckled lowly before a loud laugh escaped him when Cassie told her about the shrunken teapots.
He could only imagine her poor family, trying to pour tea out of ever shrinking porcelain. "What did you have against teapots?" he asked in amusement, turning his head to the side so he was looking at Cassie again as well. "You got a really nasty flavour?" He chuckled, moving his arm up and under his head so he was lying a bit more comfortably.
Listening to Cassie talk about her family made him feel a sharp longing for the company of his dad, but he quickly shook it off, nodding politely as she talked about her cousins and siblings. "Do they go here as well?" he asked, genuinely curious. Having family in Hogwarts had to be an advantage - Surely you'd already know a lot of tips and secrets from family members who had already been here longer than you. "For me, it's only ever been my dad and I. Having so many people around me all of a sudden... it's a bit much sometimes, you know?"
Ruka smiled, shuffling around a bit until he was lying on his side, his head resting on his right hand. The mention of star constellations had peaked his interest; He loved the stars, they were his constant companions, the only things that never changed, no matter where he was. "The vain Queen," he said in understanding, nodding quickly. "Mother of Andromeda, right? It's one of my favourite constellations!"

Cassiopeia listened to Ruka's story with half closed eyes and a broad smile, enjoying the warm rays of sun on her face. "Your poor father! With no magic against your firehands!", she exclaimed with a small chuckle and opened one of her dark brown eyes. "And yes, in my life I have drunk many bad teas in my life, but that was definitely the worst.", she stated and jokingly pretended to gag, before she burst into laughter. Even if it had been terrible back then, thinking back to it now, made her realize how funny it must have been to watch her normally so composed mother freak out about her beloved porcelain shrinking.
She heard Ruka asking, if her cousins and siblings were attending Hogwarts as well and her loud laughing faded into a small chuckle. "Yes, but most of them have already graduated. I am one of the youngest of my generation.", she told him and started counting in her head. Of her closer family, there were only her, Calliope, Odysseus and Orpheus currently attending Hogwarts and Calliope was actually in her last year in school. How time was flying...
"Yes exactly. And I don't actually know, why my parents named me after her.", the Hufflepuff murmured. "I mean, she sacrificed her daughter, just because she thought she was so conceited."
She shook her head. Naming your children after figures in greek mythology was a weird tradition, since only few had stories with a happy end.
"When you say you performed on a street, what do you mean? Do muggles have like, street theatres?", Cassiopeia asked curiously, her brows furrowed in slight confusion.
She had been to wizard theatre performances before, but they weren't on the street, most of the time they were inside the theatre building...

Ruka laughed at Cassie's fake gagging, his light hair falling into his eyes and he had to blow it away.
It was nice to spend some time like this; he hadn't really spent much time just enjoying a nice day like this outside with some good company. Cassie also didn't seem bored of him yet, and he genuinely enjoyed talking to her. In a castle this big and full of people, it was nice to have found someone he could just talk to and enjoy the little things around them with.
"You must have known a lot about Hogwarts before coming here then, right?" he asked, tilting his head to the side a little. It seemed like everyone in her family was a wizard or witch; what a magical way to grow up! "I had no idea any of this even existed, but I think... Maybe my mum could have gone here when she was a student. I like to think she did." He smiled, pulling a little on the daisy he had found earlier, but not enough to actually pull it from its roots, just enough to feel the fibres stretch under his fingertips.
Ruka smiled understandingly when Cassie talked about her name and how she didn't understand why her parents would pick one that related to such a vain, selfish woman. It was true, sometimes the story behind a name could ruin the meaning, but... "My dad always says names are supposed to inspire the best of their meaning in us," he explained, trying to memorise exactly what his father had talked about, back when he had first explained Ruka's name to him. "So when your parents name you after Cassiopeia they don't want you to grow after her vanity and selfishness but after her beauty and confidence. They might not want you to sacrifice your own child for your pride, but they want you to believe in who you are the same way Cassiopeia believed in her beauty and elegance." He smiled and shrugged, a blush creeping up on his cheeks.
Maybe he'd gone too far in assuming too much about her name, but he only wanted her to feel good about it, and to find some inspiration in it even if she wasn't too fond of the choice for her name.
His eyes sparkled a little when Cassie asked about the street performances, and it endeared him in a way, that wizards and witches seemed to miss out on so many things that the non magic folks practiced for years. "Well, really it just means we lived on the streets," he explained, smiling lightly. He had heard people say that it was something to be ashamed of, but Ruka wouldn't have changed his upbringing for the world. "My dad used to be an acrobat in a traveling circus. He would dance on a rope and perform illusions... Things that seem like they could be magic but they aren't. He danced with fire and elephants, and then, when he had me, he needed to quit. So he started doing his performances on the street, and he taught me how to do it too. People would watch, and sometimes give us some money so we could get something to eat." He shrugged and looked back up at the sky. "It's not a glamorous life, but it's a good one anyway."

Cassiopeia looked fondly at the small boy next to her. She may have only known him for a very short time, but she could already feel herself get attached to him and hearing Ruka talk about his mother like that, was truly heartbreaking. Even if he had not explicitly stated her status, Cassiopeia had a faint idea for what could have maybe happened.
Not wanting to push him to talk about something he maybe didn't want to talk about. Especially because they had just met.
So instead she answered the question, the Gryffindor boy had asked her before: "Yeah. Everytime they came home with new stories. One crazier than the other and I still need to figure out, which ones are true." The girl rolled her eyes and smiled quietly.
Through her lashes she watched Ruka as he told her his thoughts about her name and the longer he spoke, the redder her cheeks turned. At the end of his speech, she sat up and looked directly in his green eyes. "That is a beautiful way to think about it.", she murmured and made a mental note to remember these words, whenever she felt bad about herself. Maybe this hadn't been her parent's intent, but nevertheless she would look at it from a different perspective now.
'Things that seem like they are magic, but they aren't.' What an interesting concept.', she thought to herself and tried to imagine, what that would look like. "Your father sounds like a great man."
