Remy was crouching, blowing warm air on his hands. His hands were dead cold and he was as equally, deadly bored. It was like all the fun had been sucked from Hogwarts upon Remy's arrival. His day had been rather uneventful, so he had ventured outside to amuse himself. He had been under the impression that the cold and crispy air would make him feel more refreshed and happy. But here he was, looking at stones that he could skip. Remy wasn't a fan of cold weather. He missed basking under the Brazilian sun. He missed his healthy tan, now he looked like he was made of porcelain!
He loved spending time around the lake when it was warm though. He reminisced about the day he dipped his toes in the water and screeched loudly upon realizing how cold the water was. He had heard of a giant squid that liked to swim around and sometimes let the students tickle its tentacles. Remy had never seen that squid but would eagerly wait for the summer so he could catch a glimpse of it. He had also heard tales and stories about those legendary merpeople. They didn't speak his language and apparently weren't pretty like the muggle stories liked to tell. Nonetheless, he was determined on once meeting one of them too. Maybe when he would be older and wiser.
Finally finding the perfect stone and picking it from the ground, the boy fixed his scarf and measured the distance between himself and the water. He mimicked the sidearm throw he had seen baseball players do on the telly and threw the stone. One...two...three...four...five skips before the stone sank to the bottoms of the black lake. Surprised at how good of a result he had gotten, the brunet boy threw his hands in the air and started hopping around on one leg, celebrating his victory.
"And the winner is Remy Alto, the youngest champion of all times!"
He liked to amuse himself by mimicking the voice of those Quidditch commentators you'd often hear. There was a jovial grin plastered on his face, from one ear to the other one. But eventually, he let his arms slide to his sides. His grin followed, first freezing and then disappearing forever. Oh, how bored he was! Oh, how he'd love to mess with some unsuspecting, poor soul. Clasping his pale and slender hands together, he tightly closed his eyes and prayed for the Gods and Goddesses of losers to send him one to pick on. After he was done with making his slightly mean wish, he exhaled loudly and opened his eyes slowly, peeking to see if perhaps the aforementioned Gods and Goddesses had sent him a surprise.

The cold weather wasn't something that Dinara was unaccustomed to -- in fact, it was something the girl quite enjoyed. Her cheeks were flushed from the cold, but her eyes remained bright and alert; the girl had heard rumors of a 'Giant Squid' that inhabited the mysterious Great Lake and she was determined to get to the bottom of things. If there was indeed such a magnificent creature, Dinara would definitely want to befriend it!
As she skipped down to the edge of the lake, she noticed a young boy a distance away from her. The striking green scarf that contrasted against the black robes alerted Dinara to the presence of the young Slytherin, and she tilted her head in confusion as she watched the boy pick at the various pebbles lying strewn about the Lake. Pebble-tossing was a well-loved hobby back in Dinara's small town, yet she never thought that people in Hogwarts would do it as well. At the Great Lake no less! Do they not fear inducing the wrath of the Giant Squid?
In true Dinara fashion, she was about to rush straight up to the young boy to stop him; but she had much overestimated how fast her short legs could carry her. Dinara was hardly halfway through to reach the boy before the pebble had already flew out of his small hands. This by no means meant that Dinara wasn't athletic -- in fact, the girl was rather nimble and well-versed in various feats of gymnastics that she picked up while climbing trees in her old town with the other kids in her neighborhood. It's just that the uneven flooring made it slightly harder to run, and Dinara would much rather be slower than to risk falling and making herself look like a fool in front of a new student whom she had not yet been acquainted with yet.
Dinara cocked her head curiously at the boy, watching the pebble skip over the water's edge an impressive 5 times. For the pebble to skip 5 times was, without a doubt, an impressive feat to many, though Dinara wasn't particularly impressed by the boy's attempt. Her personal record (or as she'd like to brag), was 6 and a half skips; due to the stubborn girl insisting for the life of her that the pebble did hop a little before it sunk fully.
Upon hearing the boy's jovial cry of victory, Dinara wrinkled her nose slightly, eager to show off her skills as well. She looked around, letting out a small exclaim when she realised a smooth, perfectly shaped rock was (quite literally) right under her nose. Readying her aim, she locked her elbow in place; her eyebrows furrowing in focus and determination. Drawing her arm back, she slung it in a smooth motion, her expression brightening in pleasure as she watched the pebble sail through the air gracefully and skip across the water's edge 5 (and a half, or so Dinara would like to think!) times with all the grace of a trained ballerina.
"Ooooor so he thinks! Upstaged by the up-and-coming star, Dinara Lucey, who topped his feat with an impressive half a skip more on the water's edge at the Great Lake!"
Now, volume had never been a problem for Dinara. Her speaking voice alone was already enough to dominate a group of students; which made shoutcasting something that came naturally to her. What she tried to do (unconsciously, mind you, Dinara's nowhere near observant enough to pick up on the fact that Remy was trying to mimic a Quidditch commentator) was to mimic the tone that the boy had adopted, something that she didn't entirely succeed at. It was close enough for anyone listening to realise what she was trying to imitate, but nowhere near legitimate enough to be commended on.
Perhaps with more training and polishing, Dinara could be a diamond in the rough; an excellent Quidditch commentator in the making. For now, she was simply an eleven-year-old girl, just having a bit of fun.

He heard someone walking behind him and instead of his usual grin, a sly smile stretched on his face. He waited for a while. The figure seemed to get closer with every step, his prayers had worked. He had been granted a toy to play with. Thanking the Gods and Goddesses for their sacrifice, Remy turned around to see the figure.
Huh?
But there's hardly anyone in here!
Scratching the temples of his head with his index finger, the boy wondered where his sacrifice could have run off to. Perhaps they had heard his thoughts and run away in distress to alert the rest? Letting a slow but this time, disappointed hum escape his lips again he angled himself back to facing the cold, black lake. It was as if he had done one of those pretty pirouettes that he had seen the ballerinas do. With such grace and control, he couldn't help but wonder how harshly they trained to attain such skills.
He saw a frail-looking, short girl with wild hair already striking a pose. It took the boy a moment and a trip for his eyes towards her hand to register what she was doing. Was this a summon to contest? Scrutinizing her beautifully accurate form, Remy felt already challenged by her. Well, challenge accepted! What else could he say...think? The girl swiftly threw the pebble she had earlier picked up and from the look of contentment on her face, he knew that this was going to be a hard one to be. Shifting his eyes to see how the girl with the untameable hair had performed, he started counting the results in his head.
One...Two...Three...Four...Five. A draw
Even a draw was something akin to a tragedy to the pale boy. Narrowing his eyes and blowing warm air on his hands again, he listened to the screams that seemed to poorly imitate his poor imitation. He wouldn't allow himself to be dethroned by this peasant! Albeit he hated losing, he did find her loud voice kind of fun to listen to. Upon closer look, he noted that he might have seen her somewhere in the large castle before, but he hadn't talked to her, ever! And boy, should it have stayed that way.
Five and a half? How was that even possible? There were no halves and quarters when it came to the art of skimming stones on a cold winter day. Crossing his arms tightly over his chest, he lightly tilted his head to the side. This time, it wasn't out of curiosity. It was more mocking. The small smile from before was still there but now it could be interpreted as more like a satirizing sneer. Remy shifted the weight of his body from one leg to the other, waiting for her to be done before crushing whatever logic would be behind her halves and quarters.
"Well, Miss pretty sunshine doll, how is a half skip even possible? What we just saw right there in demonstration, was a five. We are at a draw," the boy insisted on at least this level of fairness. His voice was dripping with the venom that could match a snake's, something only a Slytherin could do! He accentuated every word with rudely pointing his finger at the girl as if he was poking her from a distance. The sneer was hacked off from his face by now. He was ready to challenge Dinara Lucey once again to restore his last shreds of dignity.

Amongst her whooping and cheering, Dinara's mood had actually taken a turn for the better. It's been a long time since she'd done something familiar in Hogwarts, everything else had seemed so foreign to her. Now, she was glad that she'd at least had something that reminded her of home.
She turned to her face the young boy, her hazel eyes alight with excitement. Dinara's expression quickly changed though; her warm, smiling eyes narrowing to a stinging glare. Is the boy... challenging her? Her eyes roamed over his rather smug posture, the glint in his eye striking Dinara as less than friendly. It probably didn't help that Dinara wasn't one to take such an obvious challenge lightly, either.
The girl stepped up in turn, her own arms folded across her chest. Shaking her head, the mess of curls that sat atop her head flew backward; almost as if they themselves were throwing a tantrum as well. Upon the boy's insistence that their little skipping rocks match had ended in a draw, Dinara stamped her foot in anger. While a larger sized bloke stamping his feet would've come off as even mildly threatening, Dinara's attempt to exert her dominance was... Well, not intimidating at all, to say the least.
Dinara's mock display of anger thinly veiled her contentment from being referred to by Remy as 'Miss pretty sunshine doll'. After all, with her wild tangle of hair and her unruly behavior; Dinara had never really been referred to as the 'pretty one' in the family. Or anywhere, really. It came as a great compliment for someone to have thought Dinara pretty, and she was flattered by it, to say the least.
"Well, thank you for calling me pretty. I appreciate that."
The girl's typically jovial tone had turned to one of sarcasm, but anyone observant enough (or really, anyone who knew Dinara well enough) would've have picked up on the small, genuine smile that had involuntarily found it's way on her face before snapping back to the confident grin that she had plastered on in a show of bravado.
Taking a step closer to the boy, Dinara looked him up and down before planting her hands on her hips and leaning her weight to one side, sticking her bottom lip out as she eyed him.
"Well, mister 'upset over losing a skipping rocks contest', if you're so insistent on this being a draw; let's settle this fairly."
A slight jeer in her voice, the girl cocked her head as she said that, looking up at the boy tauntingly. She hadn't missed the coldness in the boy's voice -- she was no stranger to talking to people who had often resorted to biting remarks in their attempts to win battles. Dinara wasn't one to resort to using 'venom' or 'coldness' in her battles; she much preferred just jumping straight into action and settling it fairly and conclusively. Staring the boy unflinchingly in the eye, she opened her mouth, her tone unexpectedly resolute and her little face firm.
"Let's have a rematch."

Remy kept standing there, being his defensive self. He still had his arms snugly over his chest as he stared at the girl. He hated how she actually took his challenge instead of just being tackled into submission. Clicking his tongue he took a careful step back when she came closer to him. She was such a pain in the backside! He'd never admit it himself but Remy was one of them too. She mimicked his arms over the chest and received a grunt in response. How dare she mock him that way!
When she started stomping her feet, he looked confused for maybe a millisecond before that confusion turned into a grin. This girl looked like an angry toy soldier that Remy liked to play with in his free time. He couldn't help but let out a little chuckle, not an insulting one. He just couldn't help it, this was too funny to him. He had the courtesy to cover his mouth so she maybe wouldn't see that he was pretty amused. He took this matter very seriously.
He hadn't meant 'Miss pretty sunshine doll' in that way. He tried to belittle her, but little did he know that she had taken it the wrong way. He took another defensive step back, eyes still narrowed. Sure her toy soldier demeanor wasn't scary, but he didn't want to get closer to a cootie-machine either. If an outsider would be looking at this, it would seem as if a wild lioness was intimidating a slim household cat into a corner. He usually wasn't the person to fight just for the sake of fighting, but boy did her confident grin piss him off.
Upon detecting her sarcasm, he answered with something a bit more mean. "What, you want me to take it back? Alrighty, Miss unpretty sunshine doll, let's settle this," he once again crossed his arms and dramatically turned his head away so he wouldn't have to look in her eyes after what he had said. It wasn't really the strongest jab, actually, it was a pretty loser-ish move for him to resort to this. Remy was the sort of guy that wasn't the fairest and squarest. He was a sly and cunning person who loved competition and messing with others. To settle something fairly was a new thing.
He crouched again and kept his hands on his knees. Scanning the ground for some decent pebbles, he found one that looked fine enough. He picked it up and tossed it to his other hand, waiting for her to show what she had hidden in her sleeve.
"Ladies first."

Dinara's initial annoyance had soon enough escalated to actual anger. Though she was crowing in the fact that the boy seemed to at least take her seriously enough to view her as an intimidating competitor, she didn't enjoy the fact that he had flat-out laughed at her. If there was anything that Dinara hated more than being looked over, it was being scorned. The girl's pride wasn't a massive thing, but it was an accumulation of her insecurities that made her so conscious of how people viewed her.
Narrowing her eyes further, she took yet another step towards the male, electricity seeming to crackle from her squinted eyes. Dinara wasn't afraid of confrontation at all; though she usually isn't one that is so quick to anger, either. The unfortunate boy just so happened to have hit a sore spot for the girl. She wasn't the 'sensitive sort', to put it, but humiliation was one of the fastest ways to get the girl to snap.
Tilting her head ever so slightly as she listened to the boy's words, her usual jovial smile somehow seemed more... menacing, if one were to put it. Though her lips still maintained the same upturned curve, the daggers that shot forth from her eyes told a different story.
"That's alright, being pretty has never really been my strong suit anyway. I can more than make up for that in other ways."
Dinara's voice was sweet, almost coy as she said that; the words somehow sounding sickeningly sweet yet concealing an underlying tone of viciousness. If one were to compare it to something; it would've reminded them vaguely of a cupcake laced with arsenic -- Dinara had never been one to display her poison upfront. She'd never been one to play dirty, but she wasn't dumb enough to show all her cards to competition either.
As the boy knelt, picking through the various pebbles on the ground, Dinara took the opportunity to quickly scan the pebble-ridden path for an appropriate rock as well. She hadn't thought too much about her choice of pebble previously, but now the stakes were much, much higher.
Leaving the boy to his pebble-picking, Dinara ran off to a lesser traveled path near the edge of the Great Lake. The choices there were much more plentiful; and Dinara took her time in choosing the pebble that would be the one redemption for her fallen pride. Weighing the different pebbles and carefully feeling them, Dinara eventually chose one that seemed appropriate enough -- a thin, flat stone that was just right; not too heavy nor too light. The young girl was confident that it was heavy enough to travel a distance, yet light enough for her to lob it. It fit snugly in the palm of her hand, too; and Dinara was eager to test this new stone out.
Rushing back to the boy, she was greeted by the sight of a ready rival. He seemed confident enough; and even gentlemanly enough to let her go first. Nodding her head in appreciation, Dinara couldn't hide the surprise in her face at the boy's unexpected kindness. Who would've thought he was capable of such a nice act!
Stepping forward, Dinara lightly tossed the stone in her hands a few times before assuming her stance. Watching the surface of the water, the girl (who had seemingly just been standing still this whole time) had actually been making minute adjustments: the way she was gripping the rock, the angle at which her hand was facing the water, even the degree to which her wrist was rotated.
Once she was ready, Dinara took a deep breath. Her arm swung back; but instead of slinging it forward like she deep previously, a barely perceivable flick of the wrist was all it took. All the same, the stone flew forward, cutting through the air effortlessly. She watched with bated breath as the rock began to skip.

This time, Remy didn't move when she took a step towards him. He kept his feet firmly on the ground, staring her down. His arms slid back to his sides before putting them behind himself. He tilted his head in a playful way, mirroring her own body language. Oh, now she was angry? He couldn't believe how easily she was agitated. He found it kind of fun. Why, you ask? He loved to irritate and tick off people, a lot. He fed on people's reactions, they gave him a sense of being entertained. Hiding his amused grin, he kept his face neutral. She was smiling, but he could see that he had hit the goldmine, perhaps she was insecure about her looks? He didn't really care about his own looks, nor the looks of others in all honesty.
"Of course you do," he said, his voice subtly matching the sweet one she had. While hers was honey-covered, he was much more open about the fact that he looked down on her.
He watched her run to the hills to find a simple pebble. Psht, it was all about the technique, right? It didn't matter if his pebble was a bit heavier and not as flat... The girl came back with a pebble in her hand, just like he expected. She looked at him with a surprised face for a while before turning to throw her stone. What? Was it that surprising that there was still some kind of minor chivalry alive? Perhaps if he had been a Gryffindor, she would have found it less odd.
The boy watched her take her stance. For a while, she seemed to just stand there, frozen. He wondered if he should shake her awake or something. Did she just malfunction and stop responding? Suspiciously looking at her, she suddenly woke up alive and fine. Dinara threw the stone, Remy couldn't even pinpoint when. The pebble was suddenly just, there! Skipping on the surface of the water. His eyes immediately shifted towards the black and cold water. Attentively he followed the stone skip. Damn it, that would be hard to beat.

1,2,3...
...4,5,6,7!
Baffled, the young girl rubbed her eyes in disbelief. 7? Did she actually break her own record? That was amazing! A cocky grin plastered on her face, she turned to face the boy; the smile on her face genuinely sweet this time. Interlocking her fingers and placing it beneath her chin, the girl was about to boast of her accomplishment. That is until she noticed intense bubbling (from the peripheral of her eye) coming from where her stone had sunk. Suddenly, the pebble flew back out of the water. With a loud yelp, Dinara ducked and dived to the side; barely escaping an ill fate. The pebble had been flung back (with full force, one might add) right where Dinara had been standing, landing and lodging itself firmly into the dirt path.
Shivering slightly, Dinara crept to investigate the remains of the pebblee that had been flung back towards her. It had created a rather deep indent in the dirt -- it almost seemed as though the pebble had been catapulted back by some unknown force. Though she was afraid, Dinara was determined to keep up her brave front. She still wasn't quite sure what exactly had happened, but she wasn't about to let the boy see her in a state of vulnerability!
Getting up to her feet, the girl was for once thankful that her mother had insisted on buying oversized robes for her. Her mind briefly flashed back to the heated exchange they had shared at Diagon Alley, where her mother had been insistent on buying robes that the girl wouldn't outgrow so soon. Initially, Dinara had been scared that she'd be mocked for it; but eventually she grew to quite like it. Afterall, she supposed, it did make her seem rather endearing!
Once again, turning to face the boy, Dinara cautiously picked up the pebble that she had used. She wasn't sure if the pebble had managed to skip 7 times due to her sheer technique and natural-born talent, or if whatever (or whoever) had flung her pebble back had actually interfered with her rock-skipping game.
"So... Do you... Want to go now?
Dinara's voice was uncharacteristically hesitant. She suddenly felt rather afraid, and even as she spoke to the boy, felt wary of the rock that she held in her small hands. Perhaps it hadn't been the wisest choice to pick the rock back up. What if it was cursed? Gulping, Dinara tried her best not to show her fear. She didn't want to ask the boy what had happened -- Dinara had never been a big fan of seeming stupid to other people, much less a competitor. However, sometimes her curiosity can be overwhelming. Eventually, she piped up.
"Also, do you know what happened back there? I think it could've been the squid or something, I'm not sure if we should continue this competition. What if he comes to shore because we angered him? What if he grabs up and traps us in his underwater palace? What if-"
All at once, the girl's thoughts that she had been keeping to herself flooded out as if a dam had broken. She blabbered on and on about the theories she had -- her voice echoing throughout the empty compound.

He watched the stone skip not four times, not five. Seven! Well, whatever he had heard about that being a lucky number was apparently true. At least for the girl with the wild curls jumping up and down on her head. If he was completely honest, he kind of wanted to touch them and see if they felt as ungraceful as they looked. She rubbed her eyes and seemed to be as surprised as he was. Remy, of course, was more passive about showing emotions on his face. He was staring at the serene water with a blank expression. Pondering what he should do next, he turned to look at her, missing the sudden fizzling of the water.
If he'd give up now, he could keep whatever dignity and pride he had left. If he did give up though, he'd look like some type of a coward. Deciding that it was a better idea to take the challenge and either win or lose and swallow it, he readied himself to throw the stone. Just as he was about to throw anything, the pebble flew right back. Remy flinched as it flew just past him towards Dinara. She did a good job ducking that attack, and he not been as surprised as he was right now, he would have complimented her.
He watched her stand right back up and lowered his hand. If that pebble just got thrown right back up, he thought that it would be a bad idea to throw his own there too. Whatever was in there definitely did not like them, not know at least. It looked like a hassle to stand up with those large robes on her. He wouldn't admit it, but she looked ever-so-slightly adorable in them. Like a baby that was still too small for these robes! She turned and looked at him with her pebble in her hand.
She asked if they should go now. He once again thought about the options he had on him. Either yes or no, that was an easy choice. Just as he was going to open his mouth to comment on the incident and put his own opinion in there, she started talking on him. The Hufflepuff girl sounded like she was going to piss herself any moment now, something that was kind of contagious... Remy didn't even blink as she started ranting something about squids and being dragged under the water. Well, there went the rumors of the squid being nice enough to let students pet him. Then again, if someone threw pebbles at Remy's house, he'd drag them underwater too.
"Oh, is the princess scared now? Don't be, for your knight in shining armor has arrived," Remy teased her once again with a surprisingly monotonous and indifferent tone. He sounded a bit impatient. He enjoyed giving slightly insulting nicknames to people. Grabbing her shoulders he turned her around and pushed her, hard enough to get her to move but not hard enough for her to fall. It was better this way, Remy could just cut the competition before he'd lose, and she was even the one asking for it!

Her eyes bore into the boy's. Dinara found it odd that the boy had a seemingly flat expression throughout, she hadn't seen him react to anything that has happened thus far. Was he actually a robot in disguise? Now, that would be a story to tell when she heads home for the holidays if it were actually true.
Out of nowhere, she felt a firm grip on her shoulders, and she found herself involuntarily turned around and being made to walk. Wincing slightly, she grabbed the boy's hands and pirouetted on the spot; firmly grasping his freezing cold hands in hers. Well, as firm as her small hands could've managed at least -- her efforts to appear dominating and threatening throughout their whole exchange had been less than successful. Dinara supposed that the boy could do with a pair of nice, wooly gloves for Christmas; and mentally made a note to anonymously mail one to him. The spirit of Christmas was Giving and Joy after all, and as much as the boy riled her, she figured that there was no one that she could possibly deprive of the Christmas cheer. She hadn't factored in the possibility that cold hands were perfectly normal for one to have in such weather -- the young girl's high body temperature was simply a result of her being already accustomed to cold weather from her hometown, and it helped that her large robes bundled her in cozily as well.
Squinting at the male and wrinkling her nose, she blew away a stray curl that had been covering her vision rather huffily. Princess? Who did this guy think he was? Dinara had never taken well to being referred to as some sort of damsel in distress -- she knew full well that she was capable of taking care of herself despite her tiny frame. Besides, she didn't think that the boy meant it in a complimentary way. Going off their past interactions, he was more than likely just mocking her.... Or was he? The young girl didn't quite know what to think of this enigmatic boy. At least, she wasn't used to people who didn't wear their emotions on their sleeves much like herself.
"For the record, Mr Remy Alto, I am absolutely not a princess, much less one for you to rescue. I can rescue myself just fine, thank you very much."
Still gripping his hand in hers, Dinara squeezed it, attempted to show her own impatience. She didn't like how the boy had treated her like a little plaything, she was as much as a worthy competitor as anyone else! Her small size didn't mean that her abilities were any less. Apart from that, Dinara wasn't willing to walk away with an unclaimed victory, either. Leaning forward slightly, she looked him square in the eyes, her eyes bright and clear in the fading afternoon light; carrying a sparkle of mischief.
"Besides, I think you misunderstood me when I asked you to go. I meant it was your turn to throw your rock -- We can't have a contest with an unsettled winner, can we? Anyway, if the Giant Squid does come after us, we'll simply have to capture it and have grilled squid for dinner!
Whatever fear that the young girl had felt earlier had quickly been displaced by her competitive spirit. Her last sentence was meant as a jest and her tone made it clear that she was joking too, the girl clapped and laughed heartily, her laughter ringing out clearly and breaking the silence of the cold winter afternoon. Visualizing the two of them just merrily roasting a giant squid by the Lake was a sight to behold, indeed. Though she was still rather wary of what the Giant Squid could do, she supposed that the both of them would be more than capable of outrunning an oversized marine creature.
