Ah, great. A duel.

I have no idea how I ended up accepting this. Maybe because I wanted to know how a real duel was like. Maybe because I was getting bored out of my skull. Maybe to check if this is what I really wanted when I signed up for the Ravenclaw team and ended up at the waitlist.

Maybe a mix of all the prior options. Anyhow, here I stand, drawing my wand ready. I was starting to enjoy this way too much.

I was teamed up with the Slytherin girl, Guinevere. She was nice, I remember her from the hospital wing. I hope her arm is better now. I don't trust my healing instincts that much.

But that was, honestly, the last thing I had in mind. No, I had a very different goal right now. Specifically when I saw the opponent team.

Dido. Bleaklane.

Of course it was her. Had to be her.

Usually, I would just do this with respect and fair for all. But not today. I'd treat Bleaklane with respect before the incident of the Ravenclaw tower. Before knowing what her sick mind was up to.

Now, there was no respect at all. She had lost that right. And this could only finish right here, in the duel. Or maybe she was too sick and creepy and crazy to leave me alone after this.

I raised my wand, ready to attack.

Why had she signed up? What on earth had possessed this stupid, sweet little idiot to cause her to sign up to an event which would surely just get her killed?

No matter what Dido’s reasoning had been that fateful day, she now stood with a partner, one of the girls from her Quidditch match, and was facing none other than an imposing tall brunette, whom Dido thought rather too scary to be facing a first and second year, and the very girl Dido so wanted to avoid: Mikaela Hendricks. Her cheeks burned red, flushed with a combination of anger, fear and, primarily, utter terrified mortification that scratched itself into her mind. She grit her teeth, on her face appearing the steeled look of dismissal and avoidance she had managed to master in the days since their… encounter.

To do anything other than staring into Mikaela Hendricks’ soul or beginning for forgiveness, mercy, absolution, Dido instead curled her lip into a half-smirk, half-snarl and glanced at her partner, Amethyst. Dido hadn’t really gotten a good look at the girl during the Quidditch game, more focused on either watching that Slytherin third-year score with ease or calling out the constant cheaters. But now, able to take a moment before the match began, she was glad to notice a vague sense of competence (though that could have been entirely generated in contrast to Dido’s own feelings of fear). With a flash of horror that struck at her knees, almost felling her before the game had even begun, she wondered for a split second whether the older girl had noticed Dido’s previous delirious imaginations and convictions or, even worse, had been privy to the encounter earlier in the month. Unfortunately, or fortunately, she wasn’t given enough time to truly consider these questions as, before she could even wish her partner luck, the Duelling moderator, another student, had started to speak.

So, she listened, intently, only very occasionally looking at Mikaela Hendricks with hatred and fear.

Amethyst believed sports were one of the best things Hogwarts offered.

And ever since her first quidditch match, she had been going around and signing up for every unofficial match that sounded even slightly interesting.
Whatever made her life slightly less monotonous.
Even if a fight broke out at Hogwarts, she envied the people involved for that's how monotonous her life was.

Thus, the young Slytherin stood in the duelling club, ready for the battle.
One could say it was a useless battle, and it was.
Amethyst was well aware of the fact that she would not gain anything even if she wins the match.
Which felt highly unlikely, for one of the members of the opponent team was a fifth year.
But she would try her best.
If she won, she could forever flaunt winning over a fifth year, and if she lost, well, that must be 'fate'.

Amethyst acknowledged her own partner.
The same girl who had moderated their unofficial quidditch match.
A scaredy cat, in her opinion.
She, however, hoped she wasn't as cowardly as her commentary previously sounded.

Her thoughts were cut off as the moderator of the duel started instructing. Amethyst glanced at Dido and quickly mumbled a quick good luck.

Avery was surprised by the stream of colors of different spells flying all at the same time. Avery kept a close eye on everything that was going on. That was her job as a moderator. She had to make sure everyone was safe and not planning anything that would cause lasting damage upon another person.

"Ouch! It seems Flipendo is quite the popular spell today! That's got to have hurt!" Avery winced as she watched Guinevere and Dido both suffer from the painful effects of the spell. She knew from experience that duels hurt. It seemed already that the hospital wing would be busy after the duel ended.

Avery was surprised to see two other spells evaded even with all the chaos going on. Wow. These girls were quite good at evasion even with all the chaos happening around them. Avery herself really needed to take some notes.

"Well, good work people! Round one has officially ended and it is now time for Round two to begin. Please prepare yourselves." Avery called out loud enough for everyone to hear.

As she waited Avery she watched carefully for what the teams decided next. She grippedd her wand tightly. Just in case they chose to do something dangerous and possibly illegal. You never knew what could happen when competitive nature took complete hold.

Eureka. It hit.

Apparently, the other team seemed to have a special preference for my teammate, Guinevere. They sent two spells at her, and one of them, a Flipendo, hit her. It looked bad.

But at least she was okay. I hoped so. If not, well, she knew where the Hospital wing was.

Anyway, my eyes and worries weren't on her right now. They were on my opponent. Dido. She got hit by my Flipendo.

I gasped with a victorious smirk and took just one step forward.

"Get up, Bleaklane." I commanded as my wand pointed again, ready to keep casting more spells and the new round was announced. I would not let them win. Not after the way they attacked Guinevere.

And most definitely not after everything Dido had done to me. I would never forgive her that.

Some people say that, in order to move on, you have to forget and forgive. I would like to strongly disagree. And I am sure my saints back me up on the fact that you can move on even with a grudge. And right now, I had the biggest gridge against Dido.

She had started it, but I was just about to finish it. And oh, I was going to enjoy it.

I kept smiling as I got ready for the next round of spells.

Flashing a small smile towards her duelling partner in response to the girl’s mumbled words of support, Dido waited anxiously for the Gryffindor moderator to announce the duel’s beginning. She could do this. She would do this. She-

“You may now begin.”

Dido instantly tensed, her arm jolting up instinctively to defend herself. In contrast to her previous encounter with Mikaela, she now gripped her wand in her fist too, ready to cast a spell. Muttering a quick “Flipendo!”, she found herself automatically pointing it at the older girl, Guinevere, presumably judging her to be the greater threat to her and Amethysts’ game. Unable to stop the words, Dido let out a small whoop as she saw the spell hit the Slytherin and, celebrating the spell’s impact, turned towards Amethyst to rejoice in their immediate success.

Just then, in the process of turning her only mildly terrified grin towards her partner, another spell, much the same as her own, hit her squarely in the side and sending her tumbling down. Dido stared at where the spell had come from and, noticing the triumphant grin on one of her opponents’ faces, a hiss of air escaped her lips. It had been from Mikaela Hendricks. Even worse, the demonic girl then mocked her. Pushing herself up from the ground, Dido blinked rapidly, squeezing her eyes shut to ease the sudden pain. She locked eyes with Mikaela. She raised her wand. She was ready.

The duel called for quick racking of brains. Spells started flying across the room the moment the moderator signalled the start.
Amethyst and Dido turned out to make a good duet, something she had found unlikely.
It was hard to trust her, given the last quidditch match.
Perhaps it was time to abandon that line of thinking.
Dido might be timid or nervous, but she was by no means a weakling.
Without exchanging so much as a glance, their brains worked in harmony, and Amethyst found in her a newfound respect for her duelling partner.
"Expelliarmus!" Her wand sliced clean through the air, aiming at Guinevere. Meanwhile, Dido hit the older girl with a knockback jinx, one that satisfactorily hit the older Slytherin squarely in the gut.
While her own spell missed Guinevere, despite its flawless execution, Amethyst couldn't help but smile.
A small, dimpled smile.
The satisfaction lasted only a heartbeat.
What was a joyful moment was suddenly turned sour as Mikaela's spell hit Dido and sent her sprawling down on the floor.
Amethyst instinctively stepped forward to help, but Dido had already pushed herself off the ground.
The young heiress glared at Mikaela, disapproving.
Not because Dido was hit; it was a duel. They were to get hit. But because of the animosity that was unneeded in this place and time.
