Tears On the Photograph
While Phoebe had packed her trunk with necessities and study tools, she had brought a few mementos of her parents with her. She hid them, feeling the need to keep them a secret. She wanted to make them special to her.
Earlier in the day, Phoebe had been rummaging through her things, looking for one of her mementos. Finding one, a picture of her as a toddler running through a field of flowers with her ma and da, she jammed it into her pocket, hoping she could go look at it in private.
She had begun to forget her parent's features from before they were attacked, making her unable to recall their beautiful and bright faces in her dreams. She felt terrible not being able to actually see the real them and waking up confused and depressed. She kept a picture in order to refresh her memory.
Their faces seemed so distant. Phoebe looked just like her mother in all features except one. She had her father's brilliant eyes. It was said that you could find galaxies in his eyes whenever he looked at you. She sighed, leaning her head against a wall. She sat in the far corner of the bathroom, one that was darker than any other area there.
Phoebe barely recognized the people in the photo. The adults in the picture seemed too colorful, too bright, and too happy. Her current parents looked nothing like them. The parents she currently had were dead. Although their hearts were beating, Phoebe could tell they were not alive. The last time she had visited them at the hospital, they both sat in identical chairs, completely static. They seemed to look through you every time you came face-to-face with them. It chilled her soul when she looked at their glossed-over eyes, unaware of everything.
It killed Phoebe when she watched the nurses maneuver her parents around like rag dolls. She was completely aware of their spiritual absence. It pained her that her aunt kept their bodies in that state. Watching them slowly age was also torture. Phoebe wished she could start over with them. She wished they would one day gain their spirits back, smiling at their daughter when she came back to them. She knew that wouldn't happen, though. She knew it was over since day one.
Phoebe blinked, causing tears to fall from her long lashes. She hadn't noticed she had been crying until the burning sensation in her eyes finally settled. She crouched over, hugging her legs. She quietly sniffled, allowing the tears to flow freely.

Tears On the Photograph
A girl with golden-brownish-orange-ish waves of hair tumbling down her back and piercing hazel eyes was running in the hallways. Her skin was a pale tone of alabaster, and her robes were green and black, with a Slytherin crest resting on her chest. Her name was Koko.
Koko had been skipping lunch again, but this time it was for less depressing reasons. Koko just felt, quite oddly, at home in the Girls' Lavatory. She rounded yet another corner of the castle, wondering why the school had to be in a castle. It just made Koko Riddle feel like the queen she knew she could be, but just wasn't good enough for it. Koko even felt a few inches taller in the Hogwarts Castle.
She finally came across the rickety wooden door of the lavatory and sighed in contentment. She was finally at what she'd found to be her sanctuary. Too many judgy people in the Slytherin common room. Koko pulled the door open and lightly set foot inside, checking for loose floorboards, out of habit. She suddenly stood straight and rigid, and no, it wasn't a loose floorboard that had caught her attention, it was something entirely different. It had been a sniffle.
Koko paused, trying to discern whether or not it had been some sort of allergic sniffle or one of sadness. She took another light, silent step forwards into the room and shut the door quietly behind her, making little to no noise and only raising a bit of dust. A light-haired girl finally came into her line of sight as Koko started walking softly towards her. The girl was crying.
Koko usually would have scoffed, but she felt a sudden stroke of empathy for the poor girl. Koko had been here a while back, and would likhely been in the same spot if no one had risen her spirits a bit. "Are you all right?" Koko asked wit a soft voice, but then she bit her tongue, knowing the other girl was not all right. Koko sat on her knees next tho the other girl, noticing the crest on her black-and-green robes. A Slytherin, Koko took note.
Koko kept her hazel gaze on the other girl, trying to mentally calm her. While she'd always had a knack for sensing and sometimes manipulating thoughts and emotions, it didn't always work, and it usually worked much better whenever Koko talked to the other person, but Koko could tell that the other Slytherin wasn't likely feeling very sociable.

Tears On the Photograph
Upon hearing a strange girl's voice, Phoebe went rigid. For a good few seconds, she even stopped breathing. She closed her eyes, stupidly believing that if she could not see them, they could not see her. She was so pitiful, so weak. Just knowing that seemed to make Phoebe's soul collapse, almost as if everything she struggled for no longer mattered. She hid her face in her knees.
Phoebe remained silent for what seemed like forever, never opening her eyes. She took as much time as she needed to collect enough of herself to be able to say something without having her voice falter.
"I.. I will be," Phoebe said, voice slightly cracking. "Alright, I mean. I'll... I'll be alright." she muttered quietly. Phoebe didn't usually break down like this. She assumed it was because Christmas was coming up, and she hadn't given herself enough preparation for the occasion.
These past few years without her parents were extremely difficult at first. She slowly started getting used to not having them with her, but the seasonal nightmares seemed to have gotten worse this time around. She assumed it was because of the amount of time she had been away from her home and her aunt. Almost every night since late November, she kept having dreams of the last Christmas she had spent with her parents, and she hadn't been able to tell anyone about it. She was torn.
Phoebe said nothing else, trying her best to not be in the girl's vision. She continued to silently sob, praying for the stranger to just leave her be. She was humiliated.

Tears On the Photograph
Koko sighed. She'd tried to make the other Slytherin feel better, but she had likely made everything worse. Before she knew it, tears were wetting her own eyelashes, slightly surprising her. "Sorry," she choked. The tears in the room seemed to be filling up the floor in puddles, soon they would become a tsunami that could drown her. Koko's normally piercing and bitter hazel gaze turned wild with confusion, and then panic.
It's just an illusion, she tried to remind herself. It's not real. But it seemed real. The water rose another centimeter, and Koko propped herself up against a sink for balance. She kept trying to gain control over her mind. She'd been afraid that if she finally lost control, something like this might happen. And it had.
She was hyperventilating, the other girl was lost in the flood in her eyes. Koko squeezed them shut, waiting for the end as the flood rose higher... But it never came. She peeked through her left eye, opening it just a tiny bit, to only see a rat skittering across the moldy tile. A tear made its way down her cheek, about to fall down into a crack in the floor. Koko caught her breath, finally regaining control over what had been able to control others effortlessy: her mind.
Maybe it's controlling me, now, Koko thought nervously, trying to find out what had happened. She retreated to the other corner of the Lavatory, realizing that the other girl had seen her hallucination. Koko made an accidental whimpering noise as she sank down to the floor, and this time she was the one who couldn't quit sobbing. All the emotions she'd had inside her, all compressed for years, were finally finding a way out. She didn't know if she'd be able to stop this new flood, and for once, she didn't know if she wanted to.

Phoebe was confused. Scared, even. She looked at the girl who had moved to a different corner in the lavatory, eyes wide and glistening from the tears. She watched as the girl sobbed, somehow knowing that the hallucination had something to do with her. Phoebe was scared, but she also felt amazed by what she just saw, even if it was fear-inducing.
Phoebe sat silently, no longer crying. Instead, she observed the girl as she cried uncontrollably. Phoebe had realized something in doing so. Everyone goes through different situations that can be traumatizing, and she was no different. She found comfort in that realization, and she slowly stood up to approach the girl.
Phoebe approached her in an incredibly slow manner, not wanting to alarm the girl. She sat beside her, wiping her own tears away. She took a few moments to think over what she should say or do to comfort her, but she couldn't think of anything. Wanting to give the girl at least a little form of comfort, she slowly embraced the girl, wrapping her arms around her shoulders. She did so silently, not saying anything to the her. The only way she would know if the hug would help her was completely up to whether or not she pushed her away.

Koko froze, feeling arms wrapped tightly around her shoulders. She wasn't used to any type of physical contact, but it did feel slightly comforting. A blaze of adrenaline rushed through her veins, reddening her face, until she realized that she'd really been mortified. "Sorry," Koko said quickly, her usual confidence absent from her soft English tone. "Sorry for apologizing so much, too," she breathed. Her throat hurt too much to actually say the words, but she hoped that the other girl could hear them. "Thanks," she finally amended.
If she were to be honest with herself, that hug was one of the best feelings that she'd had since her... "family" had decided that only Victor could like her. Koko didn't want to give them the satisfaction of breaking her, but... she couldn't always be so strong. She'd only be just like usual after this. "I'm Koko Riddle," Koko said with an awkwardness in her tone. "What's your name?" She reached an arm up around the other girl's and wiped a few tears off of her own cheeks. Koko was never really startled, as she never really felt too many emotions, but this day seemed different. She'd actually lost control. She could be as startled as she wished.
She felt the small glass phial of fire burning against her heart. It never hurt her, but it could certainly burn someone should they cross her. The chain around her neck was golden, and it was tucked under her undershirt so that no one could see the slightly embarrassing momento that she carried. It had been her father's, but it seemed to be fashioned for a woman. It belonged to Koko now.
Koko looked up at the other girl, still wrapped in a tight embrace, and she relaxed a little. Maybe it was possible to make a friend, even if you were Koko Riddle.

Phoebe took a brath of relief, thankful that the girl did not push her away. She smiled gently, attempting to make the girl feel more comfortable. "My name's Phoebe McCrary. I believe I'm in the same house as you," she added, seeing it as relevant information for some reason, "and please don't apologize for apologizing. It's incredibly counteractive, and there's nothing to apoligize for," she said, lightly patting the girl's back.
"My parents were attacked by Dementors when I was little," Phoebe blurted out. "Their souls were stolen right before my eyes. My aunt, being a muggle-born witch, saved me. For some reaon, after the Dementors were taken care of, she couldn't handle the fact that my parents don't have souls anymore, so she took them to a nursing home for muggles with the belief that they merely had memory loss. That's what the doctors believe, too," she said, wiping away a tear that had escaped her tear duct. "My aunt makes me visit them once a year. She doesn't have any bad intentions, I know, but I become completely terrified when I see their faces. Whenever I mentioned this to her, she would comfort me and tell me that it gets easier over time. So far it hasn't," she said, wiping away a few more tears.
"Many people go through difficult situations, and often at different severities," she said, wondering if she still had the girl's attention. "Honestly, it doesn't matter how bad it seems to others. If it hurts you, it's okay to cry about it. It's how people cope, and it's okay. I don't know what you're apologizing for, but it doesn't really matter considering you're doing nothing wrong," she finished, not knowing if anything she said made any sense. She shrugged it off, continuing to comfort her.

Koko listened to the other girl's story, almost feeling the sadness as her own. However, she soon realized that she actually was feeling it. "Ah. I wasn't actually born in London. I was born in Cornwall. My parents died when I was little, to a bout of sickness. I was adopted by the family of my father's close friend. I can't say that they were very nice to me without that being a lie. I've never felt at home, and as you've said, I probably shouldn't apologize any more, but I'm still sorry for this outburst. I've just kept so much pent up inside me, it was finally time to let it out."
That was the most she'd said about her past, and in a way it took a weight off of her chest. It took one off, while putting a heavier one on. Koko hadn't specified much, but Phoebe might judge her.. not that she didn't have a right to; that was something Koko did very often. She judged people based off of personality. Still, she didn't want anyone to judge her for her scarcely revealed past. Even if the other girl found her need to leave her history unspecified suspicious, Koko silently hoped she’d keep it to herself, for better or for worse.

Phoebe smiled gently, patting her back. "Sometimes it's good to talk about what's going on in your mind. It helps carry some of the weight off your shoulders," she smiled, slowly breaking the hug so she could face her. "Also, if you're worried about me telling anyone about what you just told me, don't worry. I won't tell anyone." Phoebe changed her sitting position, trying to get more comfortable on the cold floor. "I noticed how tense you were, and I wanted to make sure you weren't worried about me spreading anything around." She smiled, leaning against the wall.
"Sometimes, nothing helps for me," she mumbled, becoming slightly somber. "Every now and then I don't even feel like getting out of bed for days. It can take some time to get back on track, but I always do," she said. "I don't know if that makes me strong or whatever people say to make me feel better, but I know that what I do isn't easy for some people." Phoebe absentmindedly started tracing the cracks in the floor, feeling a little vulnerable. "It helps a lot when there are people to support you," she finished, nervously biting her lip.
"Anyway, I know we barely know each other, but if we happen to cross paths and you're going through a tough time, you can talk to me. If you want to, that is," she nervously chuckled, quickly covering her mouth because she thought it wasn't appropriate to laugh in this situation. She sat silently in the girl's presence, attempting to transfer some positive energy to her.

She didn't know what she was feeling. She'd only felt like this for two other people... Did it mean..?
Koko had a possible friend. She actually didn't want to manipulate this person. She wanted Phoebe to see her true personality, though she didn't know too much about it. A light smile crossed Koko's pale face whenever Phoebe laughed, and Koko giggled a little. "Thanks," she said finally. "I'm here for you, too." She wanted to be a shoulder to cry on, and in a way she wanted someone that she could depend on as well. It surprised her a lot, but she was very happy about this new development. Her body had stopped shaking. She wasn't scared that Phoebe would terribly judge her.
It wasn't just the neglect from her adoptive mother that had scarred her while growing up, it was the fact that before she'd gotten her Hogwarts letter, she'd been terrified of herself. Scared of the fact that she might become an Obscurial, so she tried to use her magic, which was developing frightfully quickly, as often as possible. The Hogwarts acceptance had been a huge relief, because she wouldn't be forced to keep her magic hidden at home, though the Wreaths were a wizarding family. "We're friends now, right?" Koko questioned, suddenly wistful of all the possibilities that would spring from this. She never felt happy like this; she never felt much at all, but maybe something was different.
