Fawkes excitedly made her way up to the top of the Astronomy tower. She had been waiting to view the eta aquarids meteor shower for a couple of days now. Since the Lyrid shower had occurred only about a week or two prior, it was rare to get multiple meteor showers so close to each other. In fact, with the nature of the aquarids meteor shower, it was highly possible that some of the meteors during the Lyrids was part of this shower instead. Hard to tell though.

She made her way to the centre of the room as she had done many times before. Laying back on the floor she looked up ready to view the shower. She was planning on staying for a couple of hours since the peak was tonight. Granted, she would probably be exhausted during class in the morning but to her that was a small price to pay in exchange for viewing some meteors.

She looked around in the sky for the constellation of Aquarius. It was going to be quite a few less meteors than it would be in the southern hemisphere but that didn't matter. She had her notebook with notes about the shower she had made last year. It had everything from their origins to how to view it.

Before her eyes could properly adjust to the darkness, she heard a noise behind her. She sat up and turned to face the staircase. Was she caught? She hoped not, she really wanted to watch the shower.

The Eta Aquarids Shower. Or something, Leo didn't quite remember the name. It was supposed to be beautiful. He was pretty mad at himself for missing a meteor shower a week before, and he just wasn't going to miss this one.

Leo liked Astronomy a lot. He was also quite good at it. He knew the planets, their moons, other stars, other galaxies, names of nebulae, and even black holes. He even knew how they were formed, destroyed, and a lot of other bunches of stuff, but he had to admit the information itself might not be accurate at times. What he was certifiably good at was using a telescope. He has viewed Venus, Saturn, and Jupiter multiple times. The moon? Come on, that's very easy for Leo. In fact, back at his home, whenever there's a meteor shower, he'd often try to look at those showers, and very rarely, it worked. Not very detailed, but a brief glimpse of the tail, a bit more sparkly than you see it with your bare eyes. And he was planning to do exactly that today with the telescope on top of the astronomy tower.

What he wasn't expecting though, was another person. Or rather, a girl. He had excitedly run up the staircase, holding a book for reference and another book for calculating (yes, sometimes you need to use basic trigonometry for finding out where exactly you need to place the eyepiece) and stopped abruptly to find a black-haired girl with round glasses staring back at him with an expression that probably meant she wanted to be alone or something. Leo looked around, and noticed that she was sitting at the centre all comfortable... Maybe she was also here just to stargaze?

Heck, why not just ask? Best case scenario, another friend, worst case scenario, he had t make sure she doesn't view him as an enemy. Noth are manageable. Maybe. ''The meteor shower?'' he asked, pointing at the night sky.

Fawkes blinked owlishly at the boy who had just emerged from the stairs. She could barely see him with how dark it was but as he approached closer, her eyes adjusted better. She saw him staring at her as well. Probably wasn't expecting someone else to be here, she thought.

She noticed the books in hand and wondered what is was for. Was it cause he had notes like she did? Maybe. When he asked her about the meteor shower, she nodded. Yeah, I'm here to watch the meteor shower. I presume you are as well? She asked.

She moved her stuff out of the way so that there was space in the centre of the room for him to come sit if he wanted to. It was rather cold tonight even in the summer since they were so high up, so she was glad she brought her scarf with her. She wrapped it around herself before looking back up again to see if she could spot a meteor.

She kept going back and forth from the sky to her book, noting down any observations she noticed. Mathematics was one of her strong suits, her father had taught her how to mentally do basic trigonometry so that it was easier to calculate various values needed for stargazing.

''Yeah. Nice to have a companion, I guess?'' Leo answered back with a radiant smile, genuinely happy to watch this shower with a fellow enthusiast. He noticed the girl making place at the center, and he shook his head. ''I usually sit by the telescope.'' He notified, walking over to the instrument. After he sat himself on a small chair near the huge thing, he turned over to the girl.

She kept looking at the sky and her book again and again. She had notes, Leo realized. She was noting down observations. Must be a good stargazer. Leo himself just used a telescope. Look at something magnified, good day, going home. This girl must stay for hours just staring at the sky. Leo felt an immense wave of pure curiosity wash over him. He wanted to learn how to stargaze.

He looked over to the telescope. The setup was a bit convenient. Maybe the calculations would be easier, and he could somehow look at a meteor through the telescope. He brought out his book, pencil and protractor. He looked at the girl, then back at his hands. Yeah, he thought, she might be wondering why on earth would someone have a protractor with them. ''I'm using math to... umm... look at a meteor through the telescope.'' He then realized how silly that might sound. How can you try to look at something so fast as a meteor through a telescope? ''I've done it before. It's hard, but kind of p-possible.'' It then occurred to him that the reason she was staring at him like that might because he was yapping on and on and still hasn't introduced himself.

Oops.

''Hi. I'm Leo. Leo Madahand. Hufflepuff 1st Year. Pleased to meet you.''

@Fawkes Chaos, maybe Leo can teach her how to see meteors in a telescope and Fawkes can teach Leo how to stargaze?

She looked up at the boy when he mentioned having issues looking at meteors through a telescope. Eh? A telescope to watch a meteor shower? Its extremely difficult to see a meteor through a telescope. Those rocks can hit up to 73 km/s. Even professional astronomers use huge telescopes to get large views to study them.

She was surprised he was able even to spot one at all. It wasn't impossible but in her opinion focusing on trying to find one meteor meant you wouldn't be able to view the shower as a whole meaning you would loose out on the beauty of the shower as a whole.

As he introduced himself, she noticed the fact he was named after a constellation. I'm Fawkes Chaos. Ravenclaw 1st year. She replied, dipping her quill into ink to refill it. She had become more comfortable using quills for her notes now since she didn't spill the ink anymore. Mostly. Actually that was still an issue but she was improving on it.

She proceeded to continue writing her notes. She looked up at the sky again before closing one eye and holding one hand above her face, thumb and index finger extended to measure. She observed the change of the number of meteors meaning the shower had begun the peak.

''Fawkes Chaos? That's a little different than the names I usually hear.'' Leo smiled, opening his book and jotting down a few calculations. Okay.

This was a trick his sister taught him when he was learning how to use a telescope. He cherished those memories a lot, and got reminded of them every time he used this trick. He brought out the protractor and measured a few angles, the angle between the telescope and the ground, the angle between the meteors, which were just starting to appear, and the ground, the angle between the eyepiece and the telescope (he does this just to check if his protractor works, which in hindsight is kind of redundant), and jotted down all the calculations. Now came the hard part. He then proceeded to unscrew the tripod slightly so the telescope could move, and then carefully positioned it towards the meteor. He then checked out the lenses that were placed in a tray nearby. God, these lenses were good... He carefully selected one that might do the trick, and placed it at the eyepiece. Okay. Now, he slowly adjusted the screws and levers until he was fairly certain he could catch at least one meteor. He sighed loudly and turned, about to invite Fawkes over to take a look, when he paused.

What was she doing with her finger near her eye? What was she jotting down?

He had to know what she was doing. Not being able to stop himself, he walked closer and tried to sneak a peek at her notebook. ''What're you doing with your finger??''

She glanced over at Leo a couple of times just to see what he was doing. He appeared to be measuring something- was that a protractor??? Fawkes herself hadn't used one in ages since she learned how to measure angles with her fingers. Was he measuring the angle of the telescope to the ground? She was baffled by what he was doing.

Well to each their own she supposed. If he wanted to calculate simple angles he was most welcome to who was she to judge anyways. She resumed her measurements with her finger. The meteors had started coming into a view from a higher altitude now. She had placed the base of her thumb against the meteor lines and now they had risen a bit from there. She noted the change down before she heard Leo speak up.

I'm calculating the difference in altitude of the meteors. If they go lower that means they are entering the atmosphere later than before, since it had more time to fall. But if the altitude rises like it just did that means the meteors are entering faster and have less time to fall. It's quite helpful to know if you're going to see more meteors or less, since if they are entering later then its a high chance they dissolve before we can see it. Luckily it seems like they are entering faster meaning we should start seeing a lot more now.

''Wait what? Is that so? The higher the meteors, the more we see them? That's cool...'' And the fact that she was able to measure it with just a finger was genuinely fascinating. How dedicated could one be to figure that stuff out? It was amazing!

He sat beck, staring at the sky. Damn it, he thought. Now he really wanted to learn how to stargaze. He look at the meteors. Streaks were falling across the sky. Before he know it, he started counting them. It was fun. One, two, three, four, and so on. The meteors kept on falling. The tails seems to stretch across the entire sky, the dark of the night contrasting beautifully with it. Leo wished he could take a picture of this. Or at least take a closer view.

Closer view? Oh crap, he forgot the telescope!

Leo scrambled up, slipped, fell, and once again got to his feet and ran to the instrument. His elbow hit the barrel, and it moved slightly out of position. Dammit. It too another 3 painful minutes to move it back into position. Leo took a deep breath, and peered through the eyepiece, straining his eye. Nothing. Pitch darkness.

Come on. At least one meteor? Please?

A faint blue streak. Then the view illuminated. ''IT WORKED!!'' He yelled, jumping into the air. The second time in his entire life, he had successfully seen a meteor in a telescope. He turned to Fawkes. ''Come on. You said it's hard to spot on in here, didn't you?''

More and more meteors kept falling one by one. She watched it in awe completely forgeting about her note taking just to watch the shower properly. The bluish white streaks across the dark sky was truly a sight to behold. No matter how many times she would see a meteor shower, it never failed to amaze her. It was just one of those things that gave you a fresh new experience every time it occured. And she loved it every single time.

She reached out towards it just as she had multiple times before during these showers. How much time had passed? She wasn't sure, she tended to lose track of time during these things. Bad habit of hers but it is what it is. She was in a sort of trance until Leo let out an exclamation. She snapped out of her state and sat up with a start, staring at him for a minute before she shook her head to focus again.

It is hard to spot. See if you can still spot it well. Normally at most you'll see just the streak from the trail. She was genuinly curious about if he was able to properly see the meteor or if it was only just a streak in the sky.

Leo frowned at Fawkes. Was she doubting him? Oka, spotting a meteor in a telescope was probably not believable, but still, she had to have some faith in a fellow astronomy enthusiast.

''Aw, come on, I really did spot on!'' He cried, looking at the eyepiece again.

He froze.

This was not what he expected.

Sure, he was expecting a close-up view of a tail, but this... In front of his eyes was an image of a rock. He could clearly see the craters and irregularities of it, and the rock was surrounded like ghost-like apparitions. It was the tail, Leo realized. The rock was slowly evaporating in front of his eyes. As soon as it appeared, it disappeared. ''I saw it again!'' He looked through the eyepiece one more time. Nothing. Pitch black. Then... another rock. Then one more.

Leo stared into the eyepiece for a full minute. He spotted five meteors clearly. The image of those irregularities and the tail were burned onto his retinas now. He looked back at the sky. The streaks now filled the sky. He looked at his telescope.

Each streak was a rock like the ones he saw in the scope. It absolutely blew his mind. He stared at the sky, transfixed.
