𝕿he salty wind of the Mediterranean brushed against Julien’s face. The boy’s dark brown hair flowed backwards, him not caring at all about his appearance. A beautiful woman peeked out from behind the cabin’s white door, observing the boy with a soft smile on her face.

“Julien, it’s time for dinner.”

The boy wore an expression of pure joy. As his tonton Ben always said, life on the seas isn’t for everyone. However, it was enough for him. In fact, Julien wouldn’t have had it any other way.
Tomorrow they’ll arrive in Marseille. Julien loved the sea, but touching land once in a while to reacquaint himself with the outside world is nice too. Julien just loved “experiencing life” in general.
The setting sun painted the clouds in a lovely hue of pinkish orange. After his lingering gaze was more or less satisfied, Julien left the railing he was leaning on and joined his beloved family. Maman, papa, and tonton Ben.
The happiness on their faces grew even more as they noticed Julien’s arrival. Even his papa, someone he knew all his life as a neutral-faced man, looked at his son with endearment in his eyes.

He had hoped that they would be together forever, joy everlasting.

Julien has slightly curled dark brown hair that continues to get darker growing just beneath his ears. He has light blue eyes and a relatively straight nose on his soft facial features. Julien’s complexion is of light beige, and he is 150 cm tall as of age twelve. He has relatively strong physical strength thanks to having helped out on his family’s boat since a very young age. His arms are especially strong, a trait he takes pride in along with his eyes that are the color of his spiritual home—the Mediterranean.
As a free spirit, Julien prefers to wear outfits that embody that characteristic. This includes basic hoodies when he hopes to conceal his magical identity in the muggle world; but also more interesting costumes resembling a pirate when he does not need to worry about secrecy.

As a member of the Morte family, on the other hand, there are impressions Julien needs to uphold. As a prideful Spanish house, the Mortes display their prestige by wearing elegant black gowns and coats that personify the word "nobility". Despite the family's overwhelming preference for darker palettes, other colors are also allowed, often used as signatures for each member. Formal events still overflow with black, but activities such as hunting, duelling, and broom racing became opportunities to showcase individuality.

“There is always a reason to smile. You just have to find it.”

This quote likely had a positive undertone and was meant for encouraging gratefulness and joy. However, it is true for Julien in a different way. In his experience, one’s smile is their most valuable yet underestimated and underutilized tool. There is always a reason to smile, because there is always a way you can use that for your own benefits. Most people see him as a charismatic figure, always socializing with various people and influential families while also being easygoing in his personal relationships. Though he presents himself as someone who is open and honest about his intentions, there is a constant enigmatic air about him—like he only chooses specific facts to share and everything else is stored in the depths of his mind. He gives people the illusion of knowing him well, when in reality he keeps anything he deems important enough to impact his wellbeing to himself.

Despite his shrouded secrecy, however, you can still find an entertaining friend in him. Julien is characterized as innovative, imaginative, and in some sense mischievous. It is never boring around him—if you are standing on the right side, that is. On the other hand, those who insult him might find themselves as the target of his pranks and sabotage, though they would not realize it was Julien’s doing and that his smile was a sedative.

To the Mortes, Julien is an obedient asset. Of course, with everything the family had taken away from him, this was no more than a facade. Julien only obeys the patriarch’s instructions so that his and his parents’ safety is secured. He smiles in the face of his cousin’s resentment, his guardians’ jealousy, his grandfather’s anticipation, and his grandmother’s understanding.

Indeed, there is always a reason to smile.

"To be underestimated is an incredible gift."
—Jack Rackham

The boy picked up his quill and dipped it in ink. The power of stories is as infinite as one's imagination, and infinite power is what he now needs. Nobody knew that Julien was a snake, so they put him in a cage designed for innocent, oblivious, and defenseless sheep. They harvested his wool, not seeing the scales and poison underneath.
Oh, but they will know. They will see.
The boy pressed his quill on a piece of paper, and he wrote, he drew—
A map of his story, from beginning to end.

. . . to understand his narrative, one must first see how he arrived at the crossroad.

The Start

———————————————————
Born to pure-blood Squib Javier Morte and pure-blood witch Béatrice Fol in Marseille, France, Julien had an unusually adventurous childhood. Béatrice was already pregnant with Julien at her and Javier’s wedding. Shortly after recovering from childbirth, she decided for the family to live on the seas under her family name. Javier Morte changed his name to Javier Fol, and their son’s original name was Julien Fol. This was partly due to her husband’s confession that he was running from the Mortes, but also just a spur of the moment passion. The couple had no experience with ships or boats, but Béatrice’s older brother served as deckhand to a magical ship after graduating from Beauxbatons, later sailing his own boat around the Mediterranean and the North Atlantic Ocean. Benjamin agreed and became the captain of their sailboat, then Julien’s mentor when he started to walk and talk.

Ever since he had a memory, Julien’s home was the sea. The family only stocked up once in a few months in Marseille as their boat had enchanted iceboxes capable of preventing food from rotting for a long period of time. Life on the sea was perfect for Julien, you can often find him mesmerized by the deep blue hue of the Mediterranean, staring down into the depths or straight at the horizon for hours. Apart from an abundance of free time, Julien was also educated on the basic structure of the wizarding world by Béatrice; elementary magical concepts and theories by Javier; and everything one needs to know about life as a sailor by Benjamin. They roamed the Mediterranean for years, pointing out magical creatures and plants to the young Julien whenever they saw one, solidifying his awe for the open waters.

The Storm
On a night when Julien was six, the family encountered a moderate storm. The Fols stayed inside the cabin while Benjamin was navigating through the rain at the helm. The ever-so-curious Julien, however, decided to go outside and see for himself what a storm is like. The present Julien would think back to that moment, amused by his own idiocy, saying that the arrival of his First Instance of Magic was the only reason he lives to tell the story. That day, Julien lied that he was going to the bathroom. By the time his parents realized, he had already snuck out on deck. Benjamin needed to keep his hands controlling the ship, and Javier could not allow his wife to be in danger, so he went out to fetch his little troublemaker himself. Javier walked onto the deck, grabbing anything he could to stay on board, his whole body soaked in both rain and seawater. Then he saw Julien, standing near the bow, unbothered by the storm at all. That was because he was dry—the waves that would otherwise swallow him whole were stopped before they touched his body. It was like he had an invisible shell around him. Javier called out to his son and Julien turned around, with the most innocent smile on his face. They returned to the cabin and Julien was under the mercy of his family’s wrath. After warning him repeatedly of the dangers of his actions, they sat him down and explained that his encounter was magical in nature—that he was indeed a wizard.

Javier doubted if his son would be a wizard. Before the storm, he held on to the possibility that Julien would be a squib, just like him. That even though the boy's heritage is pure-blood, he would not need to enter its world and be caged by whatever chessboard awaiting him. Once they discovered that he was indeed a wizard, Javier felt both proud and uneasy. They had been avoiding the game for so long and he hoped it would continue that way, but there is no denying the probability, however slim, that the family would be found even after so many years. Additionally, because of their avoidance, Julien had no pieces to deploy if the need of a political chess game ever came their way. After a few days of intense debate, Javier finally decided to give Julien his own copy of the Morte family notes.

The Snake

————————————————————
After the storm, they docked at a Greek port to replenish supplies and do a quick check to see if anything was damaged. Ever since his First Instance of Magic, Julien felt a strange power within; As if something had entered his brain without permission, that somehow, some sort of knowledge was squeezed into his skull. Though it was certainly alien, it also felt natural. When they arrived at this port, Julien was sitting on the side of their boat, boredly kicking his feet. Suddenly, a snake appeared in the corner of his eye. It slithered in front of him and talked to him in a language he never learned, yet understood perfectly. Hissing sounds and unearthly syllables flowed out of his throat when he thought of the words to reply with, and thus the boy discovered that he was a Parselmouth. Based on his homeschooled understanding of the wizarding world, Parselmouths are closely associated with Dark Magic and the “evil” side of history. In fear of losing his peaceful life, Julien told no one.

The Separation
Four years later during a stop back at Marseille, the family was greeted by an unfamiliar face that claimed to be their boat mechanic’s apprentice. The man said that their usual mechanic could not come to this check-up because he grew very ill over the week, gaining the family’s trust and entering their boat. Afterwards, the man introduced himself as an agent of the Morte family. Benjamin immediately took out his wand but was held down by Javier. If the Mortes sent anyone other than Rafael, it meant that this would not be the last visit, violence would only aggravate the problem.

The agent then started explaining that the Mortes would have known if he sold the notes. He did not, but still the family was furious and would see him thoroughly punished. This meeting was supposed to take place a few months ago, the last time they stopped at Marseille, but the agent saw Julien. The boy was hanging his legs over the boat, looking down into his own reflection. At some point, the water beneath his feet that he did not touch moved. A small whirlpool formed, and Julien himself was startled, jumping back down on the deck. The agent left the scene and reported back to the Morte family, telling them that Javier’s son was a wizard. The patriarch Mateo Morte, Julien’s grandfather, modified his ruling of the traitor Javier and his new family. He said that they would be forgiven, on one condition: Julien Fol shall exist no longer, and Julien Morte shall be born. Julien Morte will serve the family faithfully in the form of attending a wizarding academy and excelling in both studies and social life to remedy his father’s damage to the Morte family’s reputation by merely existing. Durmstrang would have been their first choice, but Julien had no time to become a resident of the included countries before the Institute’s foundation year starts. Therefore, Mateo decided that his grandson should attend Beauxbatons Academy of Magic. Despite the drawback of not being able to focus his studies in the Dark Arts, the family would now also have a member closer to their home country and form relationships that might easier affect the family’s standing in Spain.

———————————————————

Béatrice and Benjamin were ready to argue, but Javier stopped them once again. He agreed to all of the terms, but then the agent clarified a point: Julien Morte, as the name now suggests, will be living with the Morte family in their mansion in Toledo, Spain. The Fols, now including Javier, will only be able to visit occasionally and secretly. Julien was silent during this whole exchange. He sensed the seawater around their boat retract a little, and felt the salty wind blow stronger around him. He was on the verge of releasing magical power due to his strong emotions, but he tried with all his might to press down the urge. He heard from his father about the Morte family, he also read the notes himself. He knows that they have mysterious ways of cursing anyone who crosses them, even if they were their biological family members. His father was constantly fired upon with magic back in his youth, then immediately healed so that guests would not see any evidence of abuse. Julien knew what the Morte family was capable of, so he knew that the only way to protect those he cared about was to obey.

Later the same day, Julien arrived at the Morte family home. He had a trunk with all his belongings with him, the only things he had to remind himself of his bygone happiness. However, his story will not conclude with a puppet’s monologue—he will play the chess game he missed for years and win it. The stakes? Survival. The prize of victory? Reclaiming what he lost to the villains of his story, and write his own ending without the coercion of the all-powerful author known as Mateo Morte.

Fol—A Circus of Jokes and Joy
This pure-blood family is quite ancient, tracing their roots back to the French Renaissance when a wizard named Renard was employed as the royal jester and granted the nickname “Fol”, meaning “fool” in Old French. Renard would pretend that his magic is just smart tricks, and speak some sense into the monarch when needed, fulfilling his responsibility as jester. In addition to the name, his family was also gifted a crest as thanks for Renard's work. The Fols, as they then became, were granted non-essential noble privileges, but in reality that was just the extension of a joke. After Renard's death, the rest of the family kept their name but didn't produce another royal jester. Despite this, the whole family tree seemed to have jesters’ blood in them, as they constantly came up with bizarre ideas and inventions or dressed unconventionally for their time. The Fols, though mostly maintaining their pure-blood status over centuries, never held anything against muggles. After accumulating wealth over many years, they even became patrons for muggle witches and wizards when official schooling was not accessible for them. For this reason and their overall demeanor, the Fols were regarded as, quite suitably, "fools" by the other pure-blood families. They never entered the elite circle of the wizarding world, they just lived freely in the muggle world as wanderers.

Béatrice Fol
Julien’s biological mother, and the only mother he truly recognizes. Béatrice was raised by parents with equally free spirits as her ancestors, alongside an older brother, two younger brothers, and a younger sister. She received formal education at Beauxbatons Academy of Magic and participated in a student exchange program with Castelobruxo for a year. After graduation, she worked as a bartender and chef in Place Cachée, Paris, opened her own drink stand, then ditched that and began traveling the world. During these trips she wrote travel guides, food reviews, and even a romance novel. In short, Béatrice does whatever she felt like doing at the moment, fully embracing the idea of “living in the present”.

One fateful day in Taormina, Sicily, Béatrice met Javier in the bar of a luxury hotel during a stop in her travels around the Mediterranean. According to Béatrice years later, the disheveled Javier with semi-long dark hair was exactly like her type. She also realized quite quickly that the man had ulterior motives. However, she was not discouraged. Far from it, Béatrice felt like the secrets Javier held when approaching her made him seem like the male lead straight from a “contract-to-lover” romance novel. She initially thought it would merely be a sweet summer fling, but Javier was unexpectedly romantic and warm in the core. After dating him for some time and hearing about his full backstory, Béatrice accepted her boyfriend's proposal.

Béatrice values family above all else and was enraged at first when Javier sent their son to the Mortes. She had a very close relationship with Julien, as they had a similar personality when it comes to “enjoying the moment”. After Julien left for Spain, she entered a period of depression. Béatrice did not hold the same joy she once did when trying out new things, she even started to resent the idea of doing something fun, because she felt like she had no right to enjoy her life when Julien’s was hell. She ate less than she once did and stayed in their sailboat’s cabin all the time. She was only seen smiling when she received her son’s letters, which started weeks after their last meeting and happened at most once a month. Béatrice hated Javier for Julien’s departure at first, but after some time she realized how powerless he was at that moment. When Julien started attending Beauxbatons, the letters were more frequent and she slowly recovered after a few exchanges. Béatrice was still reluctant to try new things, but she ate like her old self and smiled more often.

Javier Morte Fol
Julien’s biological father, and the only father he truly recognizes. As a highly traditional pure-blood family, the Mortes despised Javier after years of waiting and realizing that he indeed has no magic. Javier’s twin brother Rafael, on the other hand, had a relatively powerful First Instance of Magic when he was only three years old, intensifying the comparison. When he was later sent to reside in Saint Petersburg to study Russian and basic wizarding concepts, Javier stayed at the Morte family mansion in Toledo, “wasting away” in others’ eyes. However, he was reading everything he could in the family library, eventually mastering the theoretical side of wizardry. From his childhood to young adult years, the constant insults and occasional beatings never ended. When Javier turned twenty-four, he broke into the restricted area of the library where all their formulas were stored. Javier hurriedly copied them down and fled the mansion, aiming to sell these notes off to a secretive buyer who would not turn him in. This was Javier’s revenge.

Javier went to the Sicilian hotel in search of a wealthy wizard to purchase the Morte family notes. He used specific phrases to identify witches and wizards, but none of them seemed interested—half never heard of the Mortes while the other half feared their retribution. That was until he met Béatrice. Javier did not get a chance to advertise the notes before she started flirting with him. At the time, of course, Javier thought he hid his motives well. In his mind this innocent rich lady would do anything for personal amusement, so he played along and they started dating. However, as the saying goes, “she fell first and he fell harder.” Javier grew madly in love with the kind, witty, and beautiful woman. Less than a month after their one year dating anniversary, Javier decided to finally tell her about the Morte notes and how he is likely being hunted down by the family. Béatrice accepted the danger that comes with being associated with him, and also the marriage proposal that came after.

Julien had always known Javier as more of the quiet sort, but they shared a love for the beauties of magic. Ever since Javier was a child and saw everyone around him use magic while he could not, a deep sense of jealousy brewed within. He envied anyone who could use magic—including his beloved wife and son. However, he still loves them with all his heart. There’s just also a hint of sadness behind his loving eyes when he sees Julien’s effortless casting. The sadness that he cannot experience the fascination himself. After agreeing to send Julien off to the Mortes, another emotion grew. Shame. He was ashamed of the man who could not stand up to his biological family to protect his founded one; ashamed of the father who had to hand over his son to cling on to his life; ashamed of the boy born as a Squib who caused his real family, the Fols, such torment and suffering. He desperately hopes he can make up with Julien and Béatrice, and will do anything in his power to help them as long as it does not cost their lives.

Benjamin Fol
Julien’s mentor, uncle, and the person he admires most among his family. Benjamin, or “uncle Ben” to Julien, has a relatively rugged appearance compared to his sister. However, do not be fooled by his bear-like demeanor. Uncle Ben is warm and kind to everyone he meets, unless they piss him off first. He was both a duelist and broom racer back in Beauxbatons, and was the duel captain at one point. He thought of being an Auror, but his academics did not meet the requirements. Benjamin was thus reminded of his childhood dream—to become a sailor. He joined the crew of a magical research ship that sailed around the world taking records of magical creatures, advancing from deckhand to quartermaster over the years. This experience coupled with his own voyages after leaving the crew gave him substantial material to teach Julien. He spent a lot of time telling the young boy stories of naval generals or pirates, some fictional while others truly existed in history. One of Julien’s most important possessions is a compass. It was gifted to him by his uncle Ben the birthday after his First Instance of Magic. “Remember, kid: to not lose direction of your heart is more important than not losing the North.” That sentence was personally inscribed by Benjamin on the inside lid of the compass.

He never married, but Julien was like a son to him. He was devastated when the kid was taken away by the Mortes and almost got into a fight with Javier. After sitting at the helm of their ship for a couple of hours to cool down, he decided to go back to school. More specifically, he started studying for N.E.W.T.s with the hopes of becoming an Auror at last. Benjamin wanted to find incriminating evidence for the Morte family, arrest them, see them prosecuted, and ultimately recover Julien’s freedom.

Bastien Fol
Another one of Julien's uncles, younger brother to Béatrice and Benjamin. Bastien is the most "serious" member of the current Fol family, working in the French Ministry of Magic as an archivist in its courtrooms after graduation from Beauxbatons. Unlike his older brother, Bastien did not participate in any sports during his time at the magical academy. He used all of his free time to study for exams and aspires to be a Judge someday. Julien wasn't too familiar with this uncle, as he was always very busy and rarely showed up in the Fol household during their visits. Since his integration into the Morte family, however, Julien started to secretly build up useful relationships whenever he could. This included his ambitious uncle who worked with the French magical authorities. Bastien started receiving some letters from his nephew after he enrolled in Beauxbatons, as that was the only time when the boy's letters wouldn't be checked before they're sent. Unless, of course, they were somehow intercepted. Bastien had heard of his nephew's troubles and the resulting depression his sister experienced. However, he didn't feel like he had the power to change anything, so he focused on his career to distract himself from the dread of his beloved family members. When Julien sent him those letters, Bastien was first concerned that they will be discovered by the Ministry and be used against him in some way—as they included information of a foreign country's powerful pure-blood family. He was reluctant to help Julien, but after exchanging a few letters with the boy, he quickly realized how calm he was. This wasn't a hasty attempt at revenge, this was a carefully planned out plot to slowly feed off the Morte family's power and eventually break the cage from inside. Bastien thus joined Julien's crew.

Baudouin Fol
Baudouin is Julien's youngest uncle, still a student in Beauxbatons when he was born. Many say he's the angel of the Fols, not that his siblings are bad people, Baudouin's just too precious compared to anyone. The Fols are generally whimsical and mischievous, but he can only be categorized as the first. Baudouin never plays jokes on people, he's usually the one who smiles when jokes are played on him. So, eventually nobody wanted to mess with him, either due to guilt or boredom, except for his twin sister Bernadette. As an aspiring artist, Baudouin attended the Wizarding Academy of Visual Arts and Design (WAVAD) after graduating from Beauxbatons, so he also didn't meet Julien that often. Unlike Bastien, however, he did whenever he could. After graduating from WAVAD, the young artist became a portrait painter, but he is currently not too well known yet. Baudouin's girlfriend proposed to him a few days before Julien was taken away to Spain. He accepted, but hoped that the wedding could be delayed until his family is a bit less devastated. His now fiancé agreed. Julien didn't include Baudouin in his plots against the Morte family, as he thought the wholesome artist—to put it blatantly—had nothing to offer in regards to playing a political chess game.

Bernadette Fol
Julien's aunt, Béatrice's only sister, and twin of the sweet Baudouin. She and her twin are polar opposites, with her embodying the "mischievous" side of the Fols when her poor brother was everything but. Enrolling in Beauxbatons alongside Baudouin gave her the chance to playfully mess with him without her family's supervision, but she also had other hobbies. Being the more sporty of the twins, Bernadette was very active in the duelling club. Her spells were fierce and efficient, but she would always assure her trainers that it had nothing to do with the pranks and hoaxes she did on Baudouin all her childhood. After graduation, she also travelled the world like her sister, reselling unique items and trinkets she bought as a living. If Béatrice was a traveller of the seas, Bernadette was a traveller of the land. She became an explorer of the mountains and forests, occasionally stumbling upon fugitives in the wild and assisting in their arrest. After a few instances—yes, it happened multiple times—an Auror suggested that she join law enforcement. Bernadette refused, but she did agree to be an external agent of sorts and be on the lookout for other fugitives. Julien heard these stories about his aunt and recognized her as a valuable asset. However, her role would be less political and more of a "weapon" if his plan ever comes to violence, so he didn't contact her much regarding his plots either.

Morte—A House of Decay and Death
The Morte family of Spain is a traditional pure-blood family specializing in combining the Dark Arts with Herbology. They were originally two families—Morte and Alcaraz—respectively the pioneers of Dark Arts and Herbology research during later years of the Crown of Aragon. A union between them birthed the strongest Parselmouth wizard in the kingdom, Sebastián Morte Alcaraz. He was quite active in the muggle world, participating in wars and later serving as military advisor to the king. Sebastián was granted the title of Baron for his diligent work, and his descendants inherited the privileges associated with it. The two families maintained a close relationship over the centuries, combining their knowledge to create spell combinations that produce peculiarly vile outcomes. However, since their research was never found to be used for the purpose of inflicting harm, it was permitted by Spain’s magical authorities. On a side note, there have been suspicions that the family was not fully open with the Spanish Ministry of Magic after it became the main governing body of the country's magical society. People whisper that the family's most heavily guarded formulas are extremely dangerous and might even qualify as restricted spells. Some say that their secrecy is the only reason they have not been purged by the authorities yet.

Mateo Morte
The patriarch of the Morte family, still standing tall despite his age. He is ruthless and calculating, valuing the family name above all else. He has high hopes for Julien, once saying to him that he would be a better heir. Mateo’s late father, the former patriarch, was a Parselmouth who excelled in the Dark Arts and compiled a large fraction of the family notes. The founder of the Morte family was also a Parselmouth, and thus his descendants all had the blood. However, it grew thinner over time and to see a Parselmouth in the Morte family became a rarity. Mateo is unfortunate, as he has an ambition which he cannot control—to see a Parselmouth heir take his place. Julien learned of this ambition in one of their private talks, but he had no intention of revealing his talent just yet.

Carmen Alcaraz
The matriarch of the Morte family, full of wit and wisdom. Carmen is not visibly active in the family's current politics, but in her younger years she was the one who formed many of the connections the Mortes have today; considerably with the Spanish Ministry of Magic through the Escobars, later building the bond between the two families by seeing Rafael and the Escobar's young lady married. She has no problem with Rafael, but sometimes doubts his ability to make judgements without them being clouded by negative emotions or biases; she fails to see a possibility where Fabricio can become a good leader; thinks relatively highly of Julien as a person, but knows that he doesn't want to be the head of the family if there was another way to secure himself; and puts her hopes on Camila, a kindhearted model student. Carmen thinks that the family should learn to adapt to the ever-evolving world instead of holding on to outdated traditional beliefs. She thinks that Camila can make this change, if she had the help of an advisor—in her mind Julien—and strong allies to guide her to the seat and ensure that she stays on it. Carmen has a keen eye for deception and facades, which proves a useful skill in both social and familial contexts, a reason why she thrived as a young lady. Different from Mateo, she values the longevity of their family more than its name, contributing to her favor towards Camila. She was the first and only one to identify Julien’s faked obedience, but she decided to keep this observation a secret, as she has other uses for the poor boy.

Rafael Morte
Julien’s uncle and current legal guardian, Fabricio and Camila’s father. Rafael is the definition of a prodigy child. His First Instance of Magic took place when he was only three years old, and the effects were bizarrely powerful. This performance continued in his formal education and beyond—there was no doubt he would be the successor to his father, the current patriarch Mateo. Rafael had always been hard on his son, but the comparison and strict discipline only grew after Julien’s arrival. He used Julien as a model to encourage Fabricio’s growth, some would even argue that Fabricio’s hatred towards Julien was mainly caused by his father. Despite seemingly favoring the newcomer, Rafael had no intention of letting the son of his disgraceful brother sit on the patriarch’s seat after him. He greets Julien with a welcoming and proud mask, but his true feelings towards the child are the opposite of those things. Unlike his wife and son who use verbal insults and occasionally minor jinxes, Rafael chose to undermine Julien’s position—if there was any to begin with—in the mansion. People repeatedly “forget” to inform him of family meetings, social events, and even dinners. If Julien ever had a proposal (which rarely happened anyway), he would confirm his consideration then never think about it again. “Rafael is a different kind of terror than Mateo,” Julien once said, “Mateo harms your body or takes your life in an instant, while Rafael stabs at your sanity one dagger at a time until your mind reeks of his metallic scent.”

Anita Escobar
Julien’s aunt and Rafael’s wife. Anita came from a pure-blood family that is closely involved in the Spanish Ministry of Magic. Many of her relatives are high-ranking employees of the Ministry, and she is also a powerful witch, once a duel captain at Beauxbatons. She had extremely high hopes for her son Fabricio, but his performance in Durmstrang is less than satisfactory. Her son’s incompetence was even more apparent after Julien’s arrival, making him a nuisance in her eyes. She dedicates her time to making Julien uncomfortable whenever he resides in the Morte mansion, to which he always responds with a smile and a polite nod. This infuriates Anita, but she keeps trying in hopes of driving him away, so that Fabricio’s position as the heir would not be threatened. By the son of a Squib, of all people.

Fabricio Morte
“My delightful idiot of a cousin.” That was Julien’s introduction of him to someone at some point. Fabricio is two years older than Julien and attends Durmstrang like most of the Mortes to focus their studies in the Dark Arts. Fabriocio, however, has no magical talent whatsoever. The patriarch had almost given up on him before realizing his potential in social environments. His mission thus turned into forming relationships with other powerful families in Durmstrang, and his efforts were somewhat valued by his father and Mateo. At this point the family did not have another heir they were willing to invest in, so Fabricio’s position was quite solid solely due to the lack of an alternative. This was until Julien came into his life. His newfound cousin, whom he so passionately calls “El Loco” (The Fool), became his outlet for frustration and quite honestly every other negative emotion he possesses, which is a lot. Fabricio did not feel the need to work too hard before, but now that his position is threatened, he became desperate. He attends more social events and cozies up to any family he sees potential gains in. At home, he verbally insults Julien whenever the boy is in sight. Much like his mother, Fabricio also cannot stand his cousin’s minimal response. This hatred came not only from the competition for the Morte heir, it also came from his deep insecurity of not being able to achieve his family’s expectations, a desire to be recognized, and jealousy towards Julien’s academic performance and even charisma. He secretly vowed that the day he sits on the patriarch’s seat is the day his aunt and uncle should start planning their son’s funeral.

Camila Morte
Julien’s other cousin, Fabricio’s overlooked little sister. The Mortes had a tradition of producing at least two potential heirs, so Anita’s second pregnancy was seen as an alternative to Fabricio if it was ever to be needed. However, the child was a girl. The Mortes value magical talent over everything else, so Camila’s gender did not draw violence or mistreatment towards her. Still, the idea of an “heiress” was unfathomable for the Mortes, and Camila had no chance in winning the highest seat. Therefore, the girl had been ignored by almost everyone in her family since childhood. Fabricio had a good relationship with her when she was just a tiny kid, but after Camila started studying and excelling in academics, he grew more distant and started ignoring her too, mainly out of jealousy and shame. The only relative who saw value in this girl was her grandmother Carmen. The matriarch gave secret permission for Camila to view the restricted area of their library—most importantly the notes—under her name. Camila would study the notes for a short amount of time every day and think of ways to improve them. She made some progress but kept it a secret, as she feared that her family would use her formulas to their own benefit by harming others. Camila could be compared to a scientist who doesn't want to see her creation used for vile purposes.

She was unbothered by Julien’s arrival, and was polite if not indifferent towards him. They did not interact much before Julien stumbled into her study one day, catching a glimpse of her notes that seemed to add on to or modify the Morte family formulas. After that incident, the two maintained a distant relationship in public while forming an unlikely partnership in private. Camila was reluctant when Julien offered to help her become the matriarch, as she wasn't too fond of politics. But if claiming the seat of power can ensure that her family doesn't turn to pure evil, she would be willing to try.

(relationships page)
potential concepts
- sea animals (or specifically just different fish cause there's a lot of 'em already)
- ship parts/equipment (incl. helm/rope/sail/hull etc.)
**different historical ships -> could include pirate ships, military ships, commercial ships?
**different historical pirates/sailors maybe too specific and might be problematic idk
