It was a windy autumn day. It was drizzling too, more often than would be nice, so Paul wore his yellow raincoat with a hood. As far as shoes were concerned, he wore his beige trainers, not really minding the wet ground. We'll be up there anyway, so why bother, thought the boy, looking at the sky. He sighed. Couldn't the rain have waited for later on? And the wind? Never had he ever flown in such conditions.
Well, this will be fun...
He trotted towards the shed with the school broomsticks, which were safe but - let's face the unshakable truth - not so fast, borrowing two. One of them, he picked for himself. The other was for his friend, Corrine.
Corrine... despite the ugly weather, his heart melted with happiness and excitement when thinking about his Ravenclaw classmate. A strange warmth embraced him, and he couldn't help it but huffed a short laugh.
Finally, he could do something better than her. There was this one thing in this entire world that she didn't manage to beat him at yet. And that was flying. She needed his help to tutor her. And he was more than willing to do that.
He wasn't best in their class, but he was certainly in the best quarter. They only flew twice so far, and rather low and slowly, but even that, Paul managed to do quite well. So he felt like he earned the authority to tutor others.
"Up." Did he say calmly to his broomstick, which jumped into his hand immediately. So he mounted it and launched up, climbing the height of approximately four meters above the ground. Nor more though.

Honestly speaking, the girl didn’t know what she had been thinking when she had asked Paul for help. I need help with flying, she remembered herself saying. The statement was anything but a lie, of course, though it was a bit of an underestimation of how much help she truly needed. No matter what she did, she would always fail to make her broom float more than a meter off the ground, and even then, she’d either flip completely over (much to her horror) or even skid against the ground! Paul was more than capable of riding his own broom, and in an act of desperation to save her grade in Flying class, she had asked him.
However, in light of some recent “development”, a part of her greatly regretted asking in the first place. Not only does this mean spending more time with Paul one-on-one—her traitorous heart fluttering at the thought—but it also meant that Paul had a high chance of seeing the absolute worst clumsy moments of her short flying career. In her mind, she’s already mourning the loss of whatever positive image Paul had associated her with.
And yet, on the day they had scheduled to meet again outside of class, Corrine had gotten up bright and early. No, it’s totally not because she was restless and couldn’t sleep. Class went by quickly, and immediately after Defense Against the Dark Arts, she had zoomed away to her dorm.
Corrine stood in front of her luggage, hesitant. Truly, there’s no reason to fuss; it was just Paul, and he was still her friend. However, now that she’s hyperaware of her crush, she’s equally hyperaware of everything else about herself. It wasn’t a date by any means, but Corrine wanted to look good. Cute, even, if fate allowed for it. The girl wasn’t just going to show up all sweaty after class, that would be unacceptable in her eyes.
First, she decided to pick out her clothes. Seeing as this was unfortunately a sporty activity, there wasn’t much she could do. Her outfit had to be practical and comfortable, and not even cuteness takes precedence over that. With that criteria in mind, one of her favorite pairs of brown baggy pants as well as an oversized black shirt was chosen.
Simple but good, or at least that’s what she hoped. A navy jacket was also added to the mix, seeing as Corrine could remember the wind causing a chill in her skin earlier when she had rushed back to the dorm.
Following her clothes, Corrine then went and began fussing about her hair. Her want to look cute remained the same, but when she had put her hair in pigtails, it was simply too childish. Braids also weren’t an option, as Corrine couldn’t do those very well, so it would only lead to disaster. If she did her usual ponytail as her updo, however, it’d also be too simple! Frustrated by her lack of options, her magic sparked, causing the ties in her hair to snap on accident. Her hair fell back down, slightly covering her sight and making her grumble.
Thankfully, when she looked in the mirror, it didn’t look half bad. Undoubtedly messy by her definition, as her wavy hair had never been the easiest to tame.. but honestly? It had its charm. Not to mention, Paul had never seen her with her hair down fully before. Perhaps he’d find it nice? With that thought in mind, Corrine just opted to leave her hair out as is, since it had been given a good wash beforehand and was now fully dry.
When Corrine then looked at the mirror, she found that everything looked better, but that something still felt off. Missing, somehow. It was only when Corrine looked at her face that she realized all the imperfections there. Much like anybody else, her face had its own collection of scars from acne and miscellaneous scars from injuries. Her freckles hid some, but it couldn’t hide the texture that came along with puberty. It was only right then and there that she wished that she got some makeup before arriving at Hogwarts, because now she felt entirely unprepared. It’s not like she could do anything about it now.
Instead, she put a mental note in her head to buy some form of makeup over the break. Maybe get used to wearing them more often.
With a deep breath, the girl looked over her appearance one last time. Brown baggy pants, a black oversized shirt, and for the first time in front of Paul, her hair being down. Deciding it’d be best to rush out before she could spend any more time nitpicking what little she had, she left her dorm and began heading down to the grounds in a rush.
Too much of a rush, as it were, since by the time she got to the courtyard where they had agreed to meet, Corrine was slightly sweaty and full of regrets for all the decisions she’s chosen up until now. Her only saving grace is the wind that had been blowing through her hair, which she hoped was enough to mitigate whatever messiness made her look worse than she already did. It’s not long before she spots Paul out ahead, unable to stop the soft smile spreading on her face as she waved.
It’s only when she got closer that she called out his name, relieved that she hadn’t been too late. Not that she’d tell him why. It’d be too embarrassing.

Paul, sadly, was not at all aware of anything romantic. That was just the way the kid was. His whole life was about doing and developing his magic, earthworms, bugs, marbles, hopscotch, flying on a school broomstick for fun, playing football, running around and eating. A significant part of that was accompanied by his friends and family. No romantic targets. Thus, even though he loved with all his heart, it had nothing to do with anything romantic.
For he just couldn't imagine it. He could not imagine a circumstance under which he would wish to kiss a girl. Hug her, perhaps. But certainly not kiss. And he certainly didn't understand what some elder boys in the common room were saying about getting girls to bed. Why on earth. He loved his bed and he surely wasn't about to share it with anyone. Perhaps, with a pet, if he had some, with the sole purpose of the pet guarding him from shadow monsters.
Speaking of shadow monsters, there are surely gonna be some tonight, thought Paul, looking up at the sky. They love rainy weather and thunderstorms.
The boy sighed at the vision of a dreamless night. Fortunately, the boys weren't disturbing at the time he went to sleep. Paul himself went to sleep around 11, reading a comics about his favourite superheroes, or about Merlin. All the wizarding kids were using Merlin's name instead of heavens or oh my gosh , which motivated him to find out more about the famous wizard. He wrote to his parents who sent him a comics about Merlin, which he was currently in the middle of.
That was actually how he spent an hour before the tutoring session; reading the comics. No preparation, just washing his hands after he came from the last lesson and splashing some water on his face. Paul apparently wasn't keen on fashion or anything remotely close to that.
The only thing, regarding his lifestyle, that he did care about, was healthy food, because he needed to be fit, as a half-professional footballer, back at home. That was why he sticked to vegetables and fruits rather than anything fried. That rule also applied to drinks, among which he preferred water or juice at most, to anything else, really. It was a matter of habit rather than a thing he'd force himself to do.
But back to their tutoring...
Paul was just hanging in the air, above the lawns. He flew several meters, than stopped, making a large circle to turn around. He didn't really wish to go to the lake without his companion. So he was just up there, revising the tricks they learned in the lessons.
At some point, Cor appeared, waving at him and soon calling his name. So he waved back at her, grinning and descending to the ground, where he got off his broomstick, laying it onto the ground, a meter away from hers.
"Hi there!" Did he greet her, waving at her. "Was wondering if you'd show after all." Teased the boy, poking her with his elbow. "With this weather and wind, I mean. But ya know what they say, train hard, fight easy."
He gave her a longer look, focusing on her face. There was something different about her. Something he had trouble recognizing. Perhaps, if he asked... "Is... is there a chance there's something... I dunno, different about your face? Like..." Paul, stop it. You're awkward again. "Uh, that's awkward. Ya know what? Forget about it."

Corrine knew that Paul at least liked being friends with her. He was the type to wear his heart on his sleeve, and there’s no doubt in her mind that he had met people in his life who perceived it as a lack of care or even bluntness. To her, however, it was nothing but honesty. It was pure, unadulterated honesty, one so powerful that not even the whispers of doubt in her mind were able to contest.
It’s an aspect of his that she knew well, even considering the small timeframe they’ve known each other. So, really, it shouldn’t have surprised her at all when Paul’s response to her presence was a bright grin of excitement. It really shouldn’t have.
But it did. Like a flower blooming in the sun, the response was immediate, and soon, he was flying down and teasing her as always.
Corrine couldn’t fathom ever being anyone’s sun, so to see that that from him made her flush. For once, the whispers—the ones typically responsible for bringing her down over and over again—murmured of possibility. Maybe, just maybe, there was a chance Paul felt the same way.
Pointedly ignoring the hope that ignited, she flashed him a shy smile, shaking her head in amusement. “The weather isn’t the best,” she said honestly. “But we already made plans.” She doesn’t mention how she’d go through with it even with the worst of rain and storm, simply because Paul was important.
“The cold is pleasant.” is what she settled with, motioning to her navy jacket. “And I think I’m dressed well enough to not get too cold.”
Her friend’s gaze lingered on her face, contemplating. It held for so long that Corrine felt herself sweat and fidget in place, her cheeks flushing. Just what is it that Paul could see? Did he notice the changes in her appearance? Was it too much? She knew he wasn’t the type to care about his appearance, given his typical casual wear outside of class, but a part of her hoped that he cared enough to notice.
“Is.. Is there a chance there’s something.. I dunno, different about your face?”
Paul did notice, she thought to herself, her heart skipping a beat. It didn’t surprise her that her friend couldn’t put his finger on it, since he’s not the type to care about appearances all too often, but it made her happy regardless.
She stayed quiet for a beat too long, as Paul quickly backtracked in embarrassment. “I did,” she quickly mumbled, not wanting to let the moment pass without acknowledging it. Her fingers reached out to fiddle with a strand of her hair, twirling it slowly. Not flirtatiously, mind you—Corrine wouldn’t know how to do that. Nervously, more like. “I just put my hair down.”
Please don’t make it obvious, please, she thought with a swallow. A part of her wanted to ask if her friend liked it, but even Corrine knew that’d be too obvious. Too bold, even.
Instead, Corrine went with the next best thing. “Does it look okay?”

Paul was very much like a dog, with people he liked, not realizing it, of course. But he'd always wait for them with a smile on his face and joy in the heart. Happily, excited for any new adventures they might experience together.
Corrine was a great example of such a friend. She was the first one he talked to in the castle, after all. They'd known each other since the first week of school, and she already managed to earn herself a fix position in her heart, very close, if not interchangeable with the position of his family.
"Although we both are confectioner's best masterpieces, we won't melt with a little water on our heads." Paul kind of joked, smirking.
Seeing how she shone with happiness after he asked her about the new things about her face, he was taken aback. Why is she so happy? I just... asked her about the news, which means I didn't recognize them on first sight. It sucks. It shows that I should be more observant if anything. Ran through his mind. Cor's reaction made him confused and awkward. So that crimson started climbing up the sides of his neck.
"Alright." Hummed the boy, sticking his hands into his pockets. He kept looking at her a little longer but then he just forced himself to look away, blushing. Dammit, shouldn't I tell her she looks good with her hair loose? She does, I wouldn't be lying. But, do I really wanna do it? What if it becomes awkward between us then? What if she won't want to do anything together then? -No, Paul. I command you to stop making it any more awkward between you two. But, what if... NO! Why on earth do I even feel this way? It's crazy! Thought the boy reproachfully.
He cleared his throat quickly, pointing at the two broomsticks. "What do you say we start? The sun will start to set soon and, if we want to go to the lake, it's for the best if we do that as fast as possible." Explained the boy, pointing to the broomstick. "Do you know how to get the broom up from the ground?"

Paul looked back at her. It looks good. It's the hairstyle that suits you most. No braids, no ponytail, just... this. And though I imagine it's very uncomfortable and useless for flying, it suits you exceptionally well. "Uhm... it's cool." Said the boy in the end, likely to keep it brief, again, escaping with his eyes.“Does it look okay?”

As the boy lightheartedly joked about melting, a healthy flush climbed up Paul’s neck, reaching all the way to the edges of his ears. The sight of it made her curious; it’s not often that Paul would blush like that, so there must be a reason. Embarrassment, likely, seeing as he got caught staring.
Honestly, Corrine didn’t really mind whatsoever. His gaze made her shy, but it wasn’t the type of attention that was negative. The fluttery feeling it gave her made her giddy.
If only that giddiness was courage, she thought longingly. Maybe then I’d be able to say something.
With the silence continuing for a beat, Corrine was left to her thoughts. Should she keep her hairstyle as is? It at least caught Paul’s attention, so maybe that’d be a worthwhile idea. Less effort for her to get ready on the days they share classes, too.
No, maybe not. Too boring. Corrine quickly shook her head. Should she switch it up every now and then instead? She doesn’t mind waking up a bit earlier to work on her appearance, and that might even let it stay new everyday. Make her not look so boring.
Just as she finished thinking that, a wave of her own embarrassment came. Never did she think that she’d ever be fussing over her appearance for any other reason aside from herself; it sounded and felt silly.
Her attention finally snapped back to Paul, who had awkwardly said that the change looked cool. Not exactly a beaming praise, but who was Corrine to complain? “Cool” was still a positive adjective, was it not? Ignoring the slight disappointment at the small praise, she instead paid attention to Paul's following words. By now, he’d moved on to stand next to the two brooms lying on the ground. One of them was the broom he was riding previously, and the other was undoubtedly for her.
At Paul’s mention of possibly going to the Great Lake, Corrine could only rub her arm nervously. Don’t get her wrong, the act of going to the Great Lake with Paul actually sounded fun; any time spent with her friend usually was, even if it’s not an activity she’s best at. The only problem was that this time, there’s no telling how horrible she’d do since it was on brooms.
“I don’t know if we’ll have enough time,” Corrine honestly said. Although it felt embarrassing to admit, she thought it was better than lying to her friend. This was a tutoring session after all, and she truly did need it; this was a fact she preferred to show him rather than tell him, so she went ahead and stepped up beside the broom that Paul hadn’t used.
Please don’t embarrass me too much, she pleaded in her mind as she took a deep breath. I just want to get better. Please, no more embarrassment in front of Paul. The girl’s hand finally hovered over the broom as she finally spoke the magic words. “Up, please..?” At the end of her sentence, her voice reached a higher pitch, basically turning it into a question rather than a statement.
Unsurprisingly, the broom below didn’t stir once. Not even a single shiver or twitch. Corrine’s shoulders fell in shame, and she helplessly looked over to Paul. Not yet at the verge of tears, but if things continued as it usually would in flying classes, then no doubt she’d cry today.
“This is my problem,” Corrine sighed. “In my first flying class, it took me almost the entire time to even get my broom up into my hand. By the time I did, I barely even had time to get on it and fly, and I still failed. The next few classes were the same. I’ve barely been able to get on the broom even now, and I’m the worst of my class.” She looked down sadly. “I even switched brooms several times.”

Cool was positive, indeed. The most positive Paul could come up with, at that mildly awkward moment. He simply couldn't... wouldn't do any better, for the sake of their great friendship. That was what they had and that was what he would fight to protect.
Paul noticed her insecurity as soon as the topic came to the Great Lake. She was nervous, that was natural. So perhaps, he should reconsider. Well, Paul was willing to determine the program of this session according to her abilities and wishes, so it was perfectly fine with him to stay above the shore.
"Listen, we don't need to get all the way to the lake. It's up to you." He shrugs, assuring her. "We're here to practise flying, which we can as well do above the ground."
Paul watches her trying to summon the broom, with a slight crooked smile on his face. Up, please. That's what he tried to do in lesson one, failing as well as she did now. "Funny, you're like me on lesson one. Too polite." Grinned the boy, placing his hand in the air, above his own broom. He breathed in to pronounce clearly and confidently: "Up!"
The broom lifted up instantly, which was exactly the effect he was expecting.
Then, he turned to Corrine, shaking his head and gesturing to her to try again. "Forget about lesson one and try again. It's hard, but you have to believe in yourself. The broom can feel it somehow, just like our wands. I know, it's weird, they're not even alive. But it's what it is."

As soon as Paul tried to say that they didn’t necessarily need to reach the Great Lake today, Corrine shook her head in disagreement. Don’t get her wrong, there was still very little faith in her mind that they’d actually manage that feat, but she still wanted to try. A foolish endeavor, maybe, as she’s explicitly said how disastrous she was on a broom..
However, the thought of going to the Great Lake with Paul sounded too nice to pass by. That and she genuinely couldn’t afford to fall behind more than she already had in Flying class, lest she actually fails.
In short, there really wasn’t much of a choice.
“I want to try,” the girl settled on those words, evidently not confident. Her attention remained on Paul as he smiled in amusement, talking about excessive politeness. I hope he doesn’t notice that I’m struggling to pay attention, she thought sheepishly, feeling her cheeks flush.
To find out that Paul actually struggled with summoning the broom into his hold was surprising to Corrine. The girl thought that, surely for him, it’d go way smoother with no problems. However, based on the boy’s story, it wasn’t like that at the start.
Being overly polite can affect your ability with a broom? Corrine thought to herself, feeling confused and a little miffed. Forgive a girl for trying to maintain politeness with a possibly sentient and magical item! Apparently that’s not liked by any of the brooms she’s tried to summon. Paying attention once more, she observed his demonstration while taking mental notes. Less politeness, more blunt.. Be confident, at least somewhat. No hesitance.
Admittedly, though, it’s not long before her thoughts wander again as her admiration takes control. Perfection was something Corrine never quite processed, seeing as she wasn’t the type of person to strive for it like that. Imperfection was better in her book, as making progress and putting in the work felt better than just being talented at something.
But Paul?
Paul could be that. Certainly not perfect, but in her eyes, he’s the closest person to perfection. A bit too much? Possibly, but those were her truthful feelings. He was not only a good friend but he was also kind, capable of stepping up when the going gets tough. That might even be why the boy got placed in Gryffindor.
Realizing that Paul had finished his explanation and was now waiting patiently for her to process his words, she sheepishly stepped up next to the unmoving broom nearby. Though her voice still shook with anxiety, it’s clear that she took her friend’s advice to heart, as her words were said much more firmly this time around.
The broom shook once, then twice.
With bated breath, Corrine watched as the broom finally lifted into her hand, although at a slower rate than Paul’s had been. In excitement, the girl looked over to Paul, seeking his praise and encouragement.

..... (¯`v´¯)As Cor shook her head, Paul's expression quickly changed and the corners of his lips twitched. He'd base their flight route on their abilities and the time that would be left. For now, they hadn't even left the ground yet, so he supposed that large plans were quite far-fetched. But, a boy can hope, right?
"As you wish, m'lady." Did he answer, bowing down theatrically, like a Medieval knight or soldier.“I want to try,”
He said no more, for he knew she would manage when she wanted to make it happen. Where there's a will, there's a way, says my grandpa. Ran through the boy's mind.
He figured that they were similar in this. That, once a problem appeared and she failed to solve it, she'd try again and again, working harder and harder. It never made much sense to Paul to give up to challenges, especially the ones related to learning it seemed, in Cor's case. That's why she's in Ravenclaw, ran through the boy's mind.
Admirable, really, how she managed to remember most of the infinite theoretical things they were learning in Charms, Transfig, and other subjects. Unlike Paul who was, in learning, very lazy and relied on his practical abilities, Cor was the one who was mostly successful in both theory and practice of spell casting, which would, admittedly, never stop impressing him. The two of them were actually nicely completing each other in the matters of school.
Except for Flying, apparently. People have different talents. One weakness, which will, moreover, not be a weekness anymore, after this session the two of us are having, doesn't make her any less amazing! Reflected the boy.
Paul was sure she'd manage. It wasn't a question of the result or its quality, but merely just a question of time. He had seen students like her, some of them were part of his flying class, after all. They didn't trust themselves enough to persuade the broom they knew what they were doing. He was like that himself in the beginning.
"Come on, you can do this, Cor. You've mastered everything we've learnt so far. Just calm down and focus on your strengths." Spoke the boy softly, quietly, watching her with a spark in his eye which showed a bit of what he was feeling. His heart was thomping in his chest, as if it wasn't her who was trying to lift the broom, but himself. His stomach strangely swirled and then a tickling-like feeling flooded it.
Stage fright? But why? You're not the one who's supposed to be nervous, Paulito, remember? Your broom is already in your hand. Wondered the boy. He crossed his fingers behind his back for her and he was even sending all his positive energy to her.
And then, it happened. The broom was in her hand, and Paul could, therefore, start celebrating.
"You did it! Hurray!" The boy clapped joyfully, as he destroyed the distance between them and hugged her tightly in joy. He even leaned back, lifting her a couple of centimetres up. This position, he didn't keep long, despite his best effort.
"Feels like a victory in a huge battle, to get the broom up after so many attempts, doesn't it?" Asked the boy after releasing her from his grip and chuckling. There was no doubt he spoke from his own experience.
"Alright. Now comes the easier part." Mounting his own broom, then bending in his knees and launching upwards, Paul flew up. "Let's go'n chase the setting sun!"

As soon as Paul had grinned and called her “m’lady”, Corrine felt herself flush. Unprompted, his words are followed by an image in her head. It was of the two of them, with her as a princess in a pretty gown and a fancy tiara, as well as that of Paul, who was her knight. It was an embarrassingly childish vision her imagination had conjured, but it’d be a lie to say that a part of her didn’t feel happy by it.
Not wanting to linger on it, Corrine turned to her friend victoriously after the broom had finally levitated to her grasp. To her surprise, Paul had run right into her with a laugh, his grasp tight. Her feet left the ground just slightly as she felt herself being lifted into the air by him, and she quickly had to hold onto his shoulders with a soft squeak, startled.
Corrine trusted her friend not to drop her, of course, but for her own reassurance, she wanted to hold on. It totally wasn’t because she was happy to have him close, and let’s also ignore the fact that her heart was running a million miles in a minute. Just how strong is this boy? The girl thought to herself in amusement, considering he had lifted her with such ease.
However, all good things eventually had to come to an end, and Corrine felt herself carefully being lowered by Paul. Relief flooded her as her feet made contact with the ground once again, but it was a bit of a shame as she was enjoying the hug. Not that she had the heart to complain or tell him of this fact, though. Instead, she nodded along to Paul’s words, agreeing that it did feel like a victory.
Things are looking up, Corrine thought to herself with shining, optimistic eyes. I might be able to catch up after all.
Her belief wavered slightly as Paul went ahead and climbed onto his broom, flying up not long after. To call it easier felt like a bit of an overestimation, but who was she to doubt Paul’s faith? It was him who was helping her in the first place.
With no other choice, the girl looked back down at the broom in her grasp, breathing slowly to calm herself. She could only ignore her sweaty hands as she mounted the item, making sure to grip the handle tight. To her amazement, the broom slowly began to lift up even without her instructions. Usually she’d have to spend a few moments “jumping” to trigger it, so this was a massive improvement already.
Now she was a few meters off the ground, but Paul was naturally still above her. It wasn’t all perfect, as her broom was still shaking, and she constantly had to reorient herself in hopes of not falling. Unsure if she was doing it right—though she definitely knew she could be doing it better—Corrine finally looked up at Paul meekly for guidance. Although she didn’t speak, her expression surely had showed the request for help.
