Paul was genuinely interested in DADA. He couldn't wait to get over to the class every day they had it. He likely considered it even more exciting than Herbology (and that was quite a something to consider). Magic made him nearly as happy as football did. And when he was happy, he was determined to succeed.
He came to the classroom pretty early. He chose his place to sit at, which was pretty uncommon with this young man. Well, he picked a seat by the door but then he changed his mind and went more forward, towards the blackboard.
said the professor, and so Paul looked up. The moment they were told they'd learn the Knockback Jinx, Paul's eyes widened and a huge grin appeared on his face."Good morning class, eyes on me,"
"Yes!" Hissed the boy in a muffled tone, bending his arm in the elbow and fisting his hand only to pull it down slightly in a motion. Everything suggested that he was glad, if not excited even, that they would be learning some real, duelling magic.
Finally! Ran through his mind rapidly. It will be great! Will it just... knock the victim back? Come on Paul, don't be dumb. That's why it's called Knockback Jinx! It can be dangerous though. Wouldn't want to be in the spot of the attacked person.
He got lost in his thoughts for a bit.

Defence Against the Dark Arts. It is one of the classes that Allen took interest in. Well, he is actually interested in all the classes amd he just can't pick one subject to be his favorite. Though never once in life that he will be invested enough in something like this. But sure enough, the "Defence" in the name of the subject got him even more curious about the nature of magic.
Allen joined the other first years as he walked to the classroom with his wand and textbook in his hands. And when he arrived there, he chooses a place to sit. As he did within other classes, he chooses that has the best spot for his eyes. And by that, he meant a perfect spot where he can see the blackboard and the instructions of bis teacher more clearly.
The professor come in and greeted every student present in the classroom. After the greeting, the professor then proceeds with teaching today's lesson: Knockback Jinx.
"Can't believe i will have a lot of things to learn this week." Allen thought. "I'm pretty sure this week is going to be great."
But just then, when he turned his head to the other side, he see a student getting lost in his own thought. Aware that the professor might notice that he ignores his lecture, Allen shaked one of his arms.
"Hey. Are you alright?"

Paul was distracted by the boy. He looked a little startled first, surprised about the fact that someone actually chose to "wake" him.
"Uh... yeah." Whispered the boy, so that the professor wouldn't hear him, nodding his head. "Just... got distracted by thoughts, is all." Replied the boy, the corners of his lips twitching up slightly, he even showed Allen a thumbs-up, in order to assure him of that all was right.
With the professor's first sentence, Paul's face shone with joy. With the second however, it turned into a grimace, and the boy produced a loud, disappointed groan.
"My, how are we supposed to learn to use it if we can't practice the spells on each other? That's so unfair!" Said the boy, frowning. I mean, of course that I won't like... walk around, casting spells on people. But, with friends, if they agree with it... thought the boy.
For once, Paul took his quill and the parchment and started writing. He even had the book, which he took out and opened on page 81, as instructed. He made several mistakes in his writing, of course, but he didn't really mind. Leaving the wand movement for the end, to have enough time to deal with drawing.
When the professor told them to look at his demonstration, he did.
"Whoa, that's cool!" When the professor managed to flip the pillow back with a blue lightning, he clapped twice, apparently very excited about it.

"Today, we're delving into offensive spells. However, keep in mind that this doesn't permit you to cast it on your classmates, either inside or outside this classroom."

"Now, the spell in question is the Knockback Jinx, known by its incantation, Flipendo."

A few months into his Hogwarts journey and Robin still held on to the excitement akin to a toddler receiving new toys. Dark Arts was, as quite evident to those familiar with him, something that could fill his brain and complete his overall being. It was his favorite branch of magic—mysterious, scrutinized, fascinating. Some might correct him and say "terrifying", but Robin would argue that understanding the discipline with no malicious intent is better than leaving it restricted to the privileged few.
Today they would be learning Flipendo, a basic offensive spell often used in duels and other forms of interpersonal conflict. Robin had already read their textbook even before enrolling in Hogwarts, so he was quite familiar with the theory of this spell. He knew the incantation, the outcome, the wand movement . . . Robin just never casted it because he legally couldn't.
Nonetheless, the young Ravenclaw was paying his upmost attention to the professor's instructions. He found the man's way of teaching very interesting, even though it wasn't exactly new information for him. There was a certain magic to formal education, like your self-study efforts can be validated by how much you understand the lecture. Robin couldn't tell if he liked the professor's methods because he already understood everything, or if he genuinely thought it helpful. Either way, he listened closely, trying to block out the murmurs of a boy sitting in front of him.
It was all fine, Robin was used to more "expressive" classmates after all, until a low groan intruded his ears like the screech of long nails on a chalkboard. Robin wasn't the type to shush people, he simply lacked the courage to be mean to a random peer. However, he did feel the need to indicate to some extent that he was uncomfortable with the noises.
That was until the boy muttered something underneath his breath: "How are we supposed to learn to use it if we can't practice the spells on each other?"
Robin agreed. Of course, he knows why, for their safety. Still, the process of finding a moderator for making a friendly practice duel legitimate was quite the nuisance. It took time and social energy to approach someone, you need to put together your drastically different schedules to find a time, and one party might not show up on the day you agreed on. Robin values safety, yes, but sometimes he wishes that the process was easier and simpler, at least.
Upon silently agreeing with the boy's views, Robin took a closer look at him. A Gryffindor, by the looks of his robes. Honestly not a surprise, though that comment may sound stereotypical. Despite the displeased remarks, this boy was quite concentrated on the lesson, seeing as he wrote notes in between the lines of his text book. They were not entirely correct—no, they probably were, it's just the grammar and some spelling—but Robin could clearly see the effort put into it. He saw himself as quite the prodigy, not out of pride, just indifferent observation and according the people around him. However, those who strived to devour knowledge earned more of his respect than those who had the plate set in front of them already.
Robin didn't like talking in class, and passing notes wasn't too different from that in the sense that both could be deemed unserious by professors. That didn't stop him this time, when the boy tore out a blank piece of notebook paper and wrote some words on it, waited till an opening when nobody's watching, and tapped the strip of paper on the Gryffindor's shoulder twice. The boy would see that it wrote:
The boy might already know about these less serious duels, but just in case he didn't, they're really a great way to gain practical experience—if you're fine with some form of competitiveness wrapped in it. It would also be great to attract more people to dueling, as that just means more potential opponents and moderators, and therefore more matching time slots.Unofficial (but moderated) duels are commonly used as a substitute for practicing spells unsupervised.
More duels, more excitement.

Paul's level of excitement was also much higher than low or even medium. He was somehow, in probably the most peculiar, natural way, keeping it up, so that he'd not indulge in lethargy and frustration out of all the things that were new to him and also made remarkably difficult challenges to overcome. But he was not losing his heart, no. He still considered magic to be the most challenging and one of the best things that had happened to him.
On his scale of prioritised activities, it acquired the first place, shared with football. There was one way to use and train yourself in using magic that he was aware of, and that was the Duelling Club. So, he applied to become a member. It wasn't a surprise that it was popular with students, so he was placed on the waiting list.
How long I'll have to wait, I've no clue! Ran through the boy's mind and he sighed.
When his shoulder was tapped on twice, Paul turned around, to look at those who caused it. There was a Ravie boy, who didn't seem mischievous. No, isn't a prank, or at least, it doesn't look like it.
"Huh... 's up, bro?" Turner chose to ask, but before he got an answer, the boy was passing him a sheet of paper. So, Paul's eyes lowered to it and he then narrowed them conspiciously. His curiosity, fortunately, was stronger than his aversion to written communication, so he took the sheet and read it.
Unofficial (but moderated) duels are commonly used as a substitute for practicing spells unsupervised.
His eyes widened and they immediately flicked to Robin's face. "Whoa! That's amazing!" Uttered the boy in a slightly louder whisper, which, with his flicking voice, was a rather funny matter. Paul looked at the note briefly again, blinking twice. "Where did you come across that info?" Asked the boy, wondering what was the resource of the positive news.
For a moment, he paused, his face expression seeming thoughtful. Hm, if it is not a hoax, I could ask someone to do it with me. It won't be that hard to find someone who'd want to do it, I guess. But, who will moderate it for us? I don't know many older students. Perhaps, a prefect... Paul took an inhale. His thoughts were fully preoccupied with the unofficial duelling, though he was still taking active part in the DADA lesson. Perhaps, this guy could do the duel with me. He's a Ravie, he knows plenty of things I've no clue about. Ran through his mind, and he, therefore, swung back on his chair, not only to make it clear that they were going to have a talk.
"Listen, would you like to do this unofficial duel with me later this year? I mean, we don't know much yet, but... it's a good way to practice all we've learnt so far, as your note said, so..." The Gryffindor tried to rationalise, showing him thumbs-up, instead of any possible continuation of the sentence. "Oh, and I'm Paul, by the way. Nice to meetcha. Aren't you a friend of Corrine's? She's a Ravie too."

Robin blinked a couple of times before fully registering the information that he accidentally interacted with an “extended acquaintance”. An acquaintance of his acquaintance, to put it literally. It was foolish of him to expect the boy, whom he now knows as Paul, to just immediately put a thumbs up after receiving the note and turn back to focus on the lesson. He still seemed to be listening to the lecture, but for a moment it looked like he and Robin became the main characters of this lesson.
Their conversation wasn't over, and Robin felt obliged to reply.
"I uh . . . went to the dueling club on the fourth floor and kinda just observed that." Robin responded in an intentionally lowered whisper. He really preferred not to talk in class, but it would be too slow for him to write a slip of paper every time the Gryffindor asked him something—he talked a lot. Not in an annoying way, Robin hastes to point out, just very energetic. If they were potion bottles, Paul was full and he was only a bit higher than half.
Robin paused to make sure the professor wasn't looking this way before continuing to answer the boy's questions, "I'd be thrilled to um, duel with you. Anyone really, we can talk about it more after class." There was a slight moment of silence before Robin nervously bit his lips and affirmed Paul's assumption. "And yeah, I know Corrine. Corrine Aelina? We met on the train." There was a hesitant tone mixed in with his friend's name, just to make sure they were talking about the same person. It wasn't that common of a name, at least Robin didn't think so, and to both be in Ravenclaw was even more unlikely if they were indeed not the same girl.
After getting all of his responses out of the way, Robin leaned back into his seat and stretched his back a little, being extra careful not to bump into his neighbors. He then froze in his tracks as he realized how he forgot to say his name back. Robin leaned forward again, placing his right hand next to his mouth and resting the other arm on his table as a support. They boy's eyes never left the professor's movements, but he whispered into the Gryffindor's ear, seemingly genuinely apologetic: "Forgot to tell you my name, I'm Robin Lockett. Robin the bird and Lockett the necklace thing with two 't's at the end."

Paul had never been a man of few words, but the exact opposite. No one close to him expected him to come up with only a single sentence in response, unless he really didn't know what to say, or was exhausted from extreme physical activity, or was around someone who, like El, had the power to calm him down with her own calmness.
Well, this Robin guy seems to be an Ellaine-kind of person, ran through his mind. But it's also possible that it's because of the timing. He might really mind talking to me during the lesson and not paying attention to what the professor is saying. Ya know, what if Ravies just are that way. They really care about the lessons and stuff...
As soon as Rob told him about the Duelling club, Paul murmured: "Duelling Club? Is that where the unofficial duels take place?" Asked the boy quietly. "I applied for the Gryffindor Duelling Team, but I'm apparently on the waiting list still. How about ya?"
As the professor's gaze approached them, Paul swang forward on his chair, pretending to be writing. When they were out of the radar, he swang back again, leaning his elbow against Robin's desk. The Gryf grimaced when the boy mentioned he'd love to have a duel with anyone. "Anyone... alright. I'll ignore the fact that that puts me to the level of Imps, and focus on the first part only. I'd very much like that too. It would be a great training for the real thing." Nodded the boy, the first half of his elaborate speech apparently an attempt to joke, judging from his smirk.
"Oh. That's..." Great. Less great and more okay. Yeah, it's definitely okay. Thought the boy.
Rob informed him that they met on the train, which Paul thought about for a flick second. His lips waved, as if he wished to come up with a grimace but then reconsidered? Damn, they met before I met her. How's that even possible? I thought me and Cor would have the longest lasting friendship. -Haha! Had this been a race, you'd have lost, Turner! Argued the competitive part of his mind. "Well, Cor'n'I first met in the Owlery during the first few weeks, too." The boy didn't speak angrily, but there was an annoyed hint in his tone, as if Rob had defeated him.
Paul nodded. "Uh... later, lad!" Did he hiss when the danger of being seen reoccured. So he swang down, this time for a longer while.
Professor Lécuyer started speaking about Pixies, and said they were of fairie origin. Paul narrowed his eyes. "Fairies? But... aren't fairies supposed to be... I dunno, pretty? Like Tinker Bell from Peter Pan. This is not pretty at all!" The boy took a look at the pictures shown by the professor , then started doodling a Pixy on his DADA, lesson 3 headlined parchment.
He wrote a few bullet points with information too, but the number, nor the amount of text wasn't sufficient to compile a material to study from for his final exams.
As Rob started talking to him again, Paul got startled, out of how close to him Rob's voice sounded. "Huh!" Breathed out the boy, leaning to a side, to get further from him. "You scared me, lad! Nearly caused me a heart attack." Spoke the boy, perhaps a little over-dramatically, swinging back on his chair and turning to at least partly face the boy and listen to him. "Uhm... cool? Robin, like Robin Hood! How is your robbing-rich-for-the-poor going?"

"I'm also on the waitlist." Robin answered, "But I did see some first years on the official team, so, we might not have to wait too long." Paul's talkativeness might've infected him somewhat. The Ravenclaw still carefully picks the timing of his response to evade professor attention, but he's not as nervous.
The corner of Robin's mouth twitched with embarrassment as Paul voiced his disappointment towards being "put on the same level as imps" when it comes to dueling partners. Of course, Robin didn't exactly mean that, he's just glad that there were more students interested in dueling than he thought. Not saying he's discouraged by Paul's complaint; judging by his overall demeanor and their interactions up until that point, it was most likely a harmless joke. Robin didn't respond verbally, as he still harbored a reflexive doubt towards his own way of speaking. As he answered Paul's question regarding Corrine, mental notes were taken to ensure that future embarrassments be minimized.
However, Robin sensed more genuine negativity from something else that followed. After telling his new acquaintance that he and Corrine met on the Hogwarts Express, the Gryffindor boy was not too happy. Paul seemed annoyed, or rather competitive in some way. He responded with his first encounter with the girl, emphasizing that they also met pretty early on in the semester.
Robin didn't immediately come up with an explanation, but he also wasn't bold enough to ask straight to the boy's face. It would be a mystery for some time, before other events and revelations point him towards the truth that he would later deem stupidly obvious.
The two focused on the lesson for a bit, until Robin remembered that he forgot to introduce himself and leaned forward to do just that. The poor Gryffindor was somewhat startled by Robin's sudden engagement in another conversation, for that he felt embarrassed again, this time pushing up his glasses as a form of comfort.
"How is your robbing-rich-for-the-poor going?"
Robin Hood . . . something—no, someone his dad had jokingly referenced before. Robin isn't too familiar with the story itself, but he is familiar with the similarity in their names. Well, are they still similar if they're the exact same?
Paul's joke almost made Robin chuckle. He has a similar sense of humor with my dad, he thought. Despite the urge, Robin repressed his faint smile into the same flat line it had been for the most part. He was in a relatively good mood, so he decided to attempt a joke back: "Not too well, I'm on a robbing hiatus for school, after all."
Afterwards, Robin nodded and sat back into his chair. The lesson was entering more practical realms, so he wanted to make sure that he paid attention to all of the instructions on their activity today.

"Well...it looks like we'll eventually get there, we just have to hang in there." Paul sighed, after Robin said that he saw some other first-years on the waiting list for the Duelling Club. "The problem is that I hate waiting. It's always so boring! Unless you find a good spare activity, which, in case of Duelling, is easier than I'd thought till this lesson! With the possibility of unofficiall duelling." Paul kept rambling, but then, he paused, swinging back down on his chair, to sit still for a moment, at his own desk.
Hm, he looks like a nice chap. I could introduce him to Sky and Ellaine, and we could become... hm, five Musketeers! Or, five dalmatines! Hehe, that's a cute name. Let's go again! Five brave men, like Seven Brave Men, just fewer. Or, five stars instead of All Stars. Or Five in a Boat and an owl... wait a sec. I don't actually know what pets the other guys have, if they have any! Corrine has an owl, but the others? Thought the boy.
"Uhm... do you have any pets?" The boy swang back on his chair, placing his elbow on Rob's desk. It might have, admittedly, come out as quite a random question, so Paul chose to explain further. "I mean, if I introduce you to my other friends, we'll need a group name. So, I figured it would be cool to just... include the pets in it, if you, guys, have any. I don't yet, eh..."
Paul, again, swang back down, not to drag too much attention to himself. He remained like that for several minutes, but just as Rob spoke about stealing hiatus, he let out a muffled chuckle, turning around, smirking.
"Sadness..." Hummed the boy. "But you can still practice archery and swordfighting, right? Or are those on hiatus too?" Paul kept ribbing him for the similarity of his name to Robin Hood, apparently enjoying it. "If you're seeking for a sparring partner, seek no more. You've just found one." Added the Gryff.

Robin silently nodded to Paul's comments on waiting. That is the hardest part, arguably the only hard part of being on a waitlist, but nonetheless agonizing. Robin was fine with waiting himself, but seeing other first years on the team when he isn't does feel a bit . . . unpleasant. He's glad that Paul now at least knows of unofficial dueling, it'll sate his hunger for some time.
The Gryffindor boy went silent for a moment, Robin thought he too started focusing back on the lesson. He was slightly surprised when the energetic boy swung back his chair and asked about pets. It did makes sense, at least. Even though they've only met for . . . less than an hour? Robin felt like he had grasped the essence of this lion's character.
"No, I don't." Robin stretched the corners of his mouth down a little, they didn't move much but it was enough to show that he hopes otherwise. "Actually my mom really wanted me to get one when I bought school supplies, but I felt like I should familiarize myself with Hogwarts before having to take care of something else." His eyebrows raised at the idea of forming a "friend group" named after their pets. He's not absolutely against it, he just felt like he drained all his social battery by talking to one Paul already. Are his friends all energetic like him? That would be chaotic. Robin relaxed his eyebrows shortly and shrugged, "Sorry, seems like that isn't possible anymore."
Now that the "group of pet owners" idea is off, the Gryffindor boy went silent once more, until he brought up the Robin Hood joke again. "Aye, I'd love to spar some time." Of course, not referring to sword fights, but to magical dueling.
Reducioas you might see in robin's profile, he does have a pet cat. but that canonically happened in july and he is, at the time of this thread, petless.
