Date : Unknownth, 2026 Word Count: : 205 It was that time again. Avery had been asked to moderate yet another duel. She didn't know why people constantly came up and asked her to do it. She wasn't even that good at it yet. But, of course, she would never pass down the chance to hone her skills and get better. If she ever wanted to learn anything in life, she had to work hard and practice at it.
This duel felt different. Avery did not know the story behind it, but it did not feel the same as the others had. Maybe she was just being delusional? Or maybe not. She brushed off the thoughts and shook herself into game mode. She had to focus. That was required of her. She did not want to be the reason someone was hurt for reasons that could have been avoided.
"Alright guys. Welcome to your duel. I am your moderator, Avery Gray. Now, I would like a fair game here. Good luck and begin when you're ready." Avery explained. Hoping what she had said had just made at least a little sense. Her words had sounded better in her head. But that didn't matter. She could not let such a little thing bother her.

𝕵ulia smiled. It was finally time for her first duel! For years, she had yearned to do one, and now she finally could. The day before, after bumping into Edward in the corridor and deciding on the duel, she had sought out her Gryffindor friend, @Avery Gray, to mod their duel. Much to her surprise, the second year had agreed. Honestly, Julia didn't know why she had chosen her of all people, but she had heard Avery's name quite a lot when it came to unofficial duelling moderators, and Av was her friend. Julia knew the young gryffindor got a lot of moderation request, for whatever reasons, so she appreciated her accepting one more. As she walked to the duelling club, Julia found her thoughts wandering back 5 years, the reason she chose to have her first duel now. She was 6 then, 'duelling' with her 5 year old cousin, Emmeline, using sticks and rocks. Just the thought of her cousin made Julia shudder. What she wouldn't give to see her, and her family again. Over the winter, the events that took place had left Julia scarred and reserved. Who had once been a girl of smiles and joy, was now a girl of memories and grief. Not one of her friends knew. They all didn't see the true Julia. No. She had built strong walls around her. And those were the exact walls that came back up as she walked into the duelling room, smiling softly.
● ● ● ● ● The room was quiet as Julia and Edward stood facing each other on opposite ends of the piste. Julia quickly surveyed her surroundings. Heavy oak doors marked the entrance, on the rightmost side, bolted into the stone wall, was an iron placard reciting the rules and etiquette of the sport, upon entering she saw an enormous open room, its high ceiling illuminated by floating candles. Stone tiles made up the flooring, complete with a few cracks, no doubt from the years and years of duelling that had taken place. Julia turned to Avery, who was just briefing them on a few things. “Alright guys. Welcome to your duel. I am your moderator, Avery Gray. Now, I would like a fair game here. Good luck and begin when you're ready” . Julia smiled, feeling a rush of adrenaline as she got ready to cast her spell. "You're going down", she muttered, just loud enough for Edward to hear. They might not have been rivals, but nevertheless, she had a duel to win. |

Edward walked into the dueling club room nervously, he found Julia smiling, and attempted to return the smile. They may be opponents, but there wasn't any reason they had to be nasty to one another. Especially as this was just practice; however, though he wasn't a particularly proud boy, he couldn't help but feel that his pride was at least somewhat on the line here even still. He didn't mind losing, as long as he put up a good fight, but if he lost too easily or didn't make a strong showing of his own he would feel humiliated, he knew, even if no one else but himself present actually cared...
~~~~ And so with those thoughts, he took his stand on the opposite end of the piste from Julia. She was looking around carefully he could tell, likely strategizing already he thought. Edward turned to Avery as Julia did, paying close attention during the briefing: “Alright guys. Welcome to your duel. I am your moderator, Avery Gray. Now, I would like a fair game here. Good luck and begin when you're ready”. Edward also felt a rush of adrenaline as the duel began. "You're going down", Julia had said, just loud enough for him to hear. He didn't want to hurt her, but she was clearly the competitive type, he would have to give it his best as well! |

Date : Unknownth, 2026 Word Count: : 203 Sparks flew as soon as the words left her mouth. Avery was shocked at first how quickly everything went, but she kept a close eye on what had happened. Julia, who had successfully cast Flipendo, had lost. Edward had evaded the spell just in the nick of time. Lucky for him. That spell didn't sound fun. "Nice try, Evans! Better luck next round!" Avery called out the encouragement. Hoping the girl wouldn't get discouraged.
Then it was Edward's turn. Like lightning, he cast a successful Incendio in Julia's direction. Avery winced as Julia was burned by the spells effects, but she wasn't burning. "Nice one, Bishop!" Avery called out to the boy. She was impressed by the accuracy the first year had.
"Alright! Good work you two! Keep it up! Round two will begin whenever you're ready." Avery smiled. This was going to be an interesting duel. Just from the words she had heard Julia speak at the beginning said everything. Something had happened between the pair. What that was, Avery didn't know, nor did she worry as she was just the moderator, but she had the feeling that this duel would be quite. . . entertaining. Much more than her other duels she'd moderated.

Edward was ready to dodge just in time as she tried to hit him with a nasty Flippendo, that would have hurt! she clearly wasn't wasting any time! He would need to make sure to not waste any either: his own spell returned fire - quite literally - as the Incendio sprayed forth from his wand and scorched her, though her robes didn't alite - he didn't know if he was disappointed or happy about that as setting her on fire seemed a bit harsh for a practice duel, but he could tell she was tougher than she let on and so their duel continued, perhaps with heightened intensity as the initial volleys resulted in a shift of understanding for both of them.
~~~~ And so with that he regained his positioning and considered his next move thoughtfully, she was likely prepared now for his next move as well, so he would have to take that into consideration for this time as well, he narrowed his eyes with intensity of focus, as a new spell sprang to his mind, he decided to see how it went: after all, what's the worst that could happen? |

𝕵ulia grimaced. Edward had hit her with incendio, while dodging her flipendo. While she was not aflame, thank god, it still hurt a bit where the spell had hit, but it wasn't anything major. She was in good shape to cast another spell, and hopefully get this duel back into her favour. She heard Avery call out encouragement along with some compliments. "Alright! Good work you two! Keep it up! Round two will begin whenever you're ready." Julia took a deep breath before regaining her duelling stance, while pondering over her next spell choice. She had to make it count. Julia wondered if she should have prioritized mastering the second year spells she had been learning in her free time, but chose not to linger on such thoughts. To ponder over such things of what “could have” or what “might have” was time consuming, and, quite frankly, distracting. And she could afford none. Julia smiled as she thought of the spell she was going to do. She decided to wait until Edward casted, just in case she needed to change her spell. Julia watched as the young hufflepuff narrowed his eyes, looking intense yet focused. He casted and a split second later so did Julia. She casted the same spell she had thought of, there was no point in changing. Worst case scenario was that she would end up in the hospital wing, slightly wounded. After all, what was the worst 2 first years could do? A smile creeped up on her face, as she thought of the consequences. It was time to win this duel.

Date : Unknownth, 2026 Word Count: : 200 Things were not going well for Julia. What was going on? She knew the younger girl could be distracted. Yes. Maybe that was the problem, though what possibly distracted the girl, Avery didn't know. "You got this Evans! Keep it up!" Avery cheered as the girl's spell was evaded by Edward.
"Nice work Bishop! Nice Irish jig, Evans!" Avery laughed lightly as she watched the girl dance the Irish jig. Avery nearly joined in for a moment, but she had no idea what the steps were. Either way this was becoming quite the duel and very entertaining. She couldn't wait to see what would come next.
"Alright! Round three is coming up! Ready your wands and get ready to go!" Avery called out. She pulled out her own wand as a precautionary. She never knew if and when it could come in handy if something went south quickly.
Now there was the period of time between spells where the two duelists chose their respective spells. Curiosity got the better of Avery as she watched the two. She wondered what they would choose for their spells, but she didn't dare voice her thoughts. No. That would not be professional. Very unprofessional.

𝕵ulia groaned. Unfortunately for her Edward was fast as lightning when it came to evading spells (Unlike her), so while he hit her with the Dancing Feet Charm, shouting “Tarantallegra”, Julia's incendio missed. Completely. And Edward escaped without a scratch. Why?! Why her?! This was so unfair! She could've kept going about how unjust everything was, and how it was all aimed at her, but her late grandfather's words echoed in her head “No matter where you go, and what you do, things will be unfair. But to flip the tables, one must be fair, and tolerant, despite whatever's going on. Remember that, and you'll always find a way” He had spoken them to Julia in the winter holidays. The day after christmas. 1 day before disaster had struck. Most would have been discouraged and sad by those words. But that wouldn't have been her grandfather's wish. No. Instead Julia was even more empowered and strengthened. No matter what happened, she wouldn't be foul or play dirty. No. Instead she would be the fairest possible. With a new rush of adrenaline, she turned towards the hufflepuff and smiled. “Good Job!”, she said. Judging by Avery's and Edward's faces looked, they were totally caught off-guard. “Good. Maybe confusion will slow him down. Force will no longer work. It's all mind games for me now,” She thought. Calming herself down, she started thinking about her next spell. Her mind raced in a thousand directions, but only one question needed to be answered. Heal or Attack? She readied herself. Julia had to cast before Edward. Making her decision in a split second, she casted, feeling proud. Her grandfaher would be watching.

Date : Unknownth, 2026 Word Count: : 222 The possible easy win for Edward changed drastically when Julia's Tarantallegra hit him. It was a beautiful casting and close to perfect. There would be no dodging this one for Edward. He began to dance an elaborate tango. One Avery had not expected out of the young student. "Nice tango, Bishop!" Avery called out. She nearly laughed, but that didn't seem appropriate as she was the moderator.
Then came Edward's spell. The Incendio hit Julia hard. Sending her robes up in flames. "Ouch! That looked like it hurt! You alright there, Evans?" Avery questioned the younger girl who seemed to be on fire now.
This was turning into a more interesting duel than she had first suspected. With all the attack the two were throwing at each other, Avery had the feeling that there really was something going on between them. A dispute? A failed attempt at friendship? Two people wanting to prove who was better than the other? Whatever had come between them, they were not backing down. That was something Avery admired about them. They truly possessed the spirit of a lion even if they weren't one.
"Alright, nice work! Round 4 will begin whenever you're ready!" Avery called out again. She gripped her wand firmly as a safety measure. Who knew what was to come in the coming rounds.
