Will edit this first post but Imma rather in a hurry! This is just a space for me to test my codes and quotes before it all goes to my store, newly open.

Took me an AGE to do all this coding, so NO ONE STEAL please!

If you worry, don't do it. If you do it, don't worry.

Beauty of the Mind
Here is one of my fanfiction stories! It is about Harry Potter, only with Lily Evans the main character, and seen from her point of view.
Important note before you read: This version is NOT accurate. If you notice things, for example she is sorted NOT into Gryffindor, that's fine, it's just an alternate version! Please do not report this post/owl me about it, because here is the official warning. BEWARE!

If I am not allowed to post untrue stuff, then of course feel free to owl me so I can remove this post, but I checked in FAQ, apparently I can ^^
I will be posting each chapter in a separate post.

You think you know the truth about Harry Potter. His parents; James and Lily, died when Voldemort tried to kill them. He failed to kill Harry because of Lily’s love. THE END.

Or was it like that?

It was a bright, sunny morning, the birds whistling happily outside, flying from trees to rooftops. The sun shone on the shallow river next to Tulip Evans’ house she shared with her two daughters.

It was a nice place, Wakeflow Gardens, and Lily loved it there. The only thing she disliked was Petunia, her sister. Petunia ruined her life, pretending that she was the best and the nicest and she kept annoying Lily.

Even if the sun was shining brightly, this was nothing to what the house was on the inside, however. Constantly Lily and Petunia Evans were arguing, which now ended in Petunia flouncing off, outraged.
“Mother!” began Petunia, in her annoying voice, “Lily is making fun of me again…” but her mother didn’t even bother to turn around from the kitchen.
“Both of you,” she started strictly, “I try to care for you two and love you like every mother should,” she continued, her voice growing soft and hurt. “But you make that so hard for me. Can’t you even try to be normal like every other sister? Just for my sake, please! I cook for you, I care for you, I look after both of you, and all you give me are your arguments. Don’t you see that my life is difficult?” she spoke, and both girls turned red.

Lily muttered a word of sorry and then immediately departed to the nearby park, where at least she could be at peace. Petunia irritably followed, and kept harassing her. “Are you going to meet up with that boyfriend of yours?” she asked.
“What boyfriend? I don’t care for boys. They are annoying.” she finished, but then added, “Though less than you.” and ran away from her sister to sit on the swings. She was thinking about nothing in particular, and she seemed to have lost Petunia finally. In about half an hour, Petunia came rushing back, and said, “Mother is calling for you. Or do you want me to eat all your food? It’s spaghetti.” she paused, then said, “umm, where is your boyfriend?” Then, not daring to face Lily, Petunia ran away back to the house at full pace.
“ I DO NOT like boys!” Lily called after her, but, once her sister was out of sight, Lily sighed and followed at a slow pace. The second she was out of the park, someone else came in.
“You. Girl. What’s your name. Lily. Come.” a bored voice said. Lily came back into the park, feeling curious, but also a little scared.
“Who are you? Where are you?”
“I’m here, you idiot.” the voice behind her said, and Lily turned. A boy was standing there, with short black hair and black eyes. He looked gloomy and annoyed.
“How long do I have to watch you argue with your sister before I can talk to you?” He asked, and Lily felt offended at his tone.
“What do you want here?” Lily inquired.
“What are you waiting for?” Both of them asked the questions at the same time, then Lily laughed. The boy frowned. “Look, tomorrow, same time, same place. And as for now, come with me. Old Dumby told me to get you to Diagon Alley. Otherwise I wouldn't have bothered.” he started walking away, then, noticed she wasn’t following, turned around and spoke again. “Aren’t you coming?”
“Coming where? Who are you?” Lily persisted.
“Diagon Alley.”
“Well, Diagon, I am not following a random boy to a random place.” Lily confessed, but he said it wasn’t his name. The Boy began walking away. Then he turned.
“ I don’t know why you had to say boy in that tone. Well, nice to meet you. But since you ‘don’t care for boys’ , ‘DO NOT like boys’ , and you are not following a random boy to Diagon Alley, then I guess good-bye. Or, actually, bad-bye.” the boy turned back and began walking briskly away.
“Oh.. so you were spying on me? Wait!” Lily called after him, “Who are you?”
The Boy did not turn around.

“Severus Snape.” The Boy said slowly, “My name.”
Lily had called after him, and he had finally turned back and came to her, though it took a lot of apologies and persuading.
“What is Diagon Alley?”
“Where to buy your school stuff. Are you coming?” he said impatiently.
“Well, Severus, for your information, I have already bought my school stuff.” Lily told him.
“Well, for your information, Lily… you have got the stuff for the wrong school.”
“But I'm going to Oakwood Academy,” Lily said, confused.
“No, you are not. Where is your money?” Severus asked, as they began to go to town.
“I’m broke.” Lily said simply, and Severus stopped suddenly. He laughed.
“You? Broke?” he began, as though this was very funny. “The descendant of Rose Evans broke? Is that supposed to be a joke?”
Lily replied in a whisper, “You knew my grand-mother?”
Severus continued walking and said “Who doesn’t?”
Lily thought about this for a moment, by which time Severus had halted.
“This,” he began, “Is where we witches and wizards buy our robes, books, wands, pets, etc.”
But Lily got stuck on only two words.
“Witches and wizards?” she coughed. Severus stared at her with utter surprise.
“Why, yes… wait. Are you a muggle born? Surely not. Dumby would have said.”
“I’m a real witch? That’s great.” Apparently for Lily his word was enough. “Who is Dumby, though? You’ve spoken of him twice.”
Severus cleared his throat and said, “Pretend I never said that. I mean, Professor Albus Percivial Wulfric Brian Dumbledore. Head of Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry.”

Severus gestured to a grim and dirty pub, and Lily raised her eyebrows in confusion.
“This... is the... Digon Alley? Or whatever?”
Severus shook his head impatiently. “That’s the entrance. Come on.” He entered the pub, where a few people were whispering together at a table in the corner. He bypassed them, and walked outside on the other side, where there was a brick wall.

Lily stared curiously. “Nice entrance,” she sarcastically said, but Severus didn’t look defeated. He tapped a brick on the wall, and it opened up into an archway. Lily gaped.

It was colorful and busy. Lily tried to take it all in, but found that was impossible. Severus steered her away from all the shops, so that they could visit Gringotts, the wizarding bank.
“But…” began Lily, “I don’t have any magic money at all.”
“That can easily be solved.” Severus turned to look in her direction, and continued, “the goblins have a bank for poor children. Limit’s 20 galleons a month.”
“But any rich person could just take 20 pounds- ”
“Galleons.”
“-Yes. Whatever. So, any rich person could take 20 Galleons and pretend they were poor? For extra money?”
Severus paused and stared at her curiously.
“No.” He said shortly, “They do some kind of security check.”
“What check?”
“I don't know! I’m not poor!”
Lily looked at him. It seemed to her as if he thought that being poor was bad.
“Well, where is the poor children section?” she asked, and the question hung in the air, unanswered.
Only then did Severus seem to realise Lily was there.
“Wha- oh. On the right.”
They turned right, and Lily saw a shock! An enormous line of miserable children stood in old hand-me-down school uniforms and they looked like they hadn’t washed for ages. One girl in particular stared at Lily and scowled. A few metres ahead, where the start of the line was, stood a tall archway. One by one the children walked through the archway, and nothing happened.
“What happens if you are rich?” Lily questioned.
Severus answered quickly, “Why are you asking all this? You are poor, aren’t you? So it doesn’t matter.”
“Yes, but what-” Lily started, before Severus interrupted her, “Watch.”
A tall girl went through the archway, but it beeped very loud, so everyone heard. The girl was thrown back across the room, and a robot voice said from inside the arch, “Your vault is V 429. Try to steal again and you will PAY.”
The girl hurried away, thankful that nothing worse had happened. The rest of the poor children looked at her in disgust as the line kept on moving.
Eventually, it was Lily’s turn, and she stepped confidently through the archway, only to be thrown back like the other girl had. The beeping was so loud she shut her ears. Once again, the arch boomed out, “Your vault is S 512. Try to steal again and you will PAY.”
Lily gasped in horror, and Severus kept a stony silence until they walked up to row S, vault 512.
“Well, Miss Lily liar, where is your key?” asked Severus, obviously annoyed at Lily.
“I… Severus! I didn’t know I had money! How would I know?!”
“Your grandmother on your mother’s side gave you tons of money, and now you pretend that you don’t have any, just for 20 extra Galleons! You didn’t ask me what would happen if someone rich stole money for nothing, you know! I’m not as dumb as you think!”
"No, Severus. Remember, I'm new to this world aren't I? How could I possibly know that my grandma was magic and left me a lot of gold in a secret underground vault?"
Severus seemed to calm down after this, and asked for the key to the vault once again. Lily replied, "I don’t have a key. I’m a muggle-born, didn’t you say so yourself?”

Severus sighed deeply. “Turn out your pockets,” he commanded, and Lily did as she was told. To her utter surprise, a silver shiny key fell out. She picked it off the floor and handed it to Severus. He grabbed it off her, and shoved it into the keyhole.
The moment the vault door creaked open, a shower of money and jewels of all shapes and sizes fell out.
Lily quickly shut the vault again, locking it with her key. Once the key was safely in her pocket, she smiled at Severus and said, gesturing to the pile of gold on the floor, “Well, I think this will be enough for one term, won’t it?”
However, Severus frowned and began stuffing the gold into a bag. After it was all in, he handed her the bag and spoke. “No. You’ll spend it all on your books and the sweets on the train.”
“I bet you I don’t.”
“I bet you 5 galleons that you spend at least half of it on the train.”He quipped, but Lily shrugged and said, “Deal, but you are losing 5 Galleons.”

They both chatted and walked around the shops. Severus insisted that she buy her wand last.

“ I need to buy my wand too.” He said. He had bought all his equipment aside from his wand.
In Flourish and Blotts, the bookshop, Lily bought all her books on her list while Severus hung around awkwardly. Finally, both of them left for the final shop.

A dirty sign above it said ‘Ollivander’s’ in faded letters. Cautiously, Lily pushed the door open, and stepped inside, followed by Severus.
“Well, Sev, me or you first?” Lily asked.
“You have no right to call me nicknames,” began Severus, but he was smiling. “I go first.” He demanded and walked up to the shopkeeper, Ollivander.

After 3 or four tries, Ollivander finally found the wand that suited Severus.
“Give it a wave.” Ollivander told him. Then he smiled and continued, “Perfect. Your wand is Dragon Heartstring, 11 inches, oak wood. Let’s say… 12 Galleons, 4 sickles and a knut.”
Ollivander held out his hand for the payment.

“But.. I only have 11 Galleons and 7 knuts!” Severus exclaimed, and Mr Ollivander withdrew the box with the wand.
“No money, no wand.” He said simply before turning his attention to Lily.
“Now, let’s see which wand is for you, my dear-” he started, those silver eyes of him unblinking until Lily interrupted him.
“Wait! I’ll pay the rest for Severus’ wand. In fact, I'll pay for the whole thing!” She said, and Mr Ollivander raised an eyebrow.
“Are you sure-”
“Yes.” Lily said firmly. She handed over the gold and the old shopkeeper gave Severus his wand.
After that, Lily bought her wand (she got the correct one on first try - Dragon heartstring, 10 ½ inches, pine wood) and she and Severus walked back to the playground where they met, two silhouettes of people who met on the same day, now firm friends.

Lily returned home to an anxious and worried mother, and she hated to think that tomorrow she would have to leave her again, only this time for a whole term. She had her trunk secretly packed, hidden under her bed, and she bought an owl, a beautiful snowy white owl, who was currently hunting in the woods for mice. She felt guilty leaving her mother, of course, but she couldn’t help feeling excited. I’m a witch. A real witch. I have money and Rubies and Emeralds, something I could never have afforded at home ; my family is too poor. I am going to a school with my best friend, Severus. (My only friend) Lily thought, and she smiled with happiness. I have a friend at last! In primary, I never could have a friend because everyone was scared and always agreed with Petunia, and she made out to everyone that I'm a freak. Lily let those thoughts wash over her as she fell into a wonderful dream full of magic and friends.

The next morning she woke up suddenly, and for a moment could not think why on earth she was so happy. Then it all flew back to her: The Boy, Diagon Alley, the wand, Gringotts, her ton of money… Then Lily realised that it was 7:00 in the morning already, and she must hurry if she was to meet Severus at 7:30! She ate a hurried breakfast, chucked her toothbrush on the top of her trunk, and zipped it shut. She looked at her watch. 7:12. Then she scribbled a note to her mother and left it on the table.

Lily hoped that the letter didn’t sound too selfish. She read it through a few times after writing it, and by that time it was already 7:23. Quickly, Lily threw on her overcoat and dragged out her trunk onto the warm-ish street outside.

Severus was already waiting, impatiently, for Lily, at the park and when she got there, he said, “It's already 7:36! If we don’t hurry, then we might miss the train!”

“Well, do you have a broomstick?” began Severus, “to make it quicker?” Lily looked at him strangely.
“I’m a muggle-born, and on my second day of me knowing that I’m a witch, you expect me to have a broomstick?”
Severus sighed. “Then we… walk?”
“Walking is not that bad, if you are used to our muggle - ways.” Lily retaliated, “I walked every day to primary school, and it’s 15 minutes by car, 20 walking.”
“Well then, let’s walk, shall we?”
“Sure!”
Lily and Severus walk (or brisk walk, and for some minutes even run) to the King’s Cross Station, between platform 9 and 10.
“There is no platform 9 ¾ !” Lily shouted, so loud that a few people turned around to look.
Severus quickly led her to a ticket barrier between the two platforms.
“It’s out of order,” Lily pointed out, and Severus grinned quickly, before saying, “After you.” And stepping aside.
Lily was bewildered; what should she do? Evidently, this showed on her face, for Severus stepped forward and told her, “After me, then, I guess.”
And he stepped through the barrier, and disappeared! Lily followed, feeling worried. Closing her eyes, she stepped into the barrier and felt her glide right through!

When Lily dared to open her eyes again, a wonderful sight streamed in them.
A red steam train stood on rails, puffing out smoke now and then, bearing the letters 9 ¾. People, children, were running in and out of it, wearing Prefect badges, Head boy/girl badges, and some without any, however, mostly everyone had a tie, red and gold, or green and silver, or bronze and dark blue, or black and yellow.
Lily suspected that this was them sorted into different houses that Severus had briefly spoken to her about,
‘Gryffindor - Bravery
Ravenclaw - Wit
Slytherin - The Best
Hufflepuff - The rest’ was according to Severus. He had told her that she should hope that she was going to be Slytherin, for he was certainly going to be in it, and their friendship would be easier to maintain if they were in the same house.

Seeing that the train was about to run away, Lily looked wildly around for Severus, but she was the only one left on the platform. She hurriedly jumped on the train and pulled her luggage on, just a fraction of a second before the train doors closed, and it started moving, slowly at first, then picking up speed, until landscapes of all sorts were flying past.

Lily tried in vain to find Severus, but he was nowhere to be seen, so she tried to find an empty carriage. Sadly they were all full, apart from one, which had only one girl in it. The girl looked up, then looked down at her book again.
“Um, may I sit here?” Lily asked politely, and the girl just nodded.
“Are you in your first year at school, too, Lily?” Asked the girl, and Lily was about to answer when something struck her. There was something very odd about this girl, and Lily only realised what it was once she thought about it a bit. Then she gasped. The girl called me by my name, and we never even met!
The girl seemed to notice her mistake, for she turned red.
Lily tried to attempt a polite conversation, “Hi! Um, my name is Lily Evans, what is yours?”
The girl lifted up her head and stared for at least half a minute at Lily without blinking, before speaking , “Reena. Reena Woodlock.”
“R - I - N - A?” asked Lily.
“No.”
“R - I - N - A - H ?” She guessed.
“No. R - E - E - N - A .” she said, “And don’t bother trying to be nice to me. An ugly name for an ugly person, fits. Doesn’t it?” She gave a nervous laugh, then frowned and turned back to her book.
“You’re not ugly-” began Lily, but the girl interrupted, “I told you, it’s no use trying to comfort me. I’ll still end up exactly the same.”
“What do you mean?” Lily questioned, and Reena said simply , “Well, I’ll be expelled, won’t I?”
“why on earth do you want to be expelled?”
“I didn’t say I wanted to…”
“Then don’t get expelled!”
The girl said one last thing , “You don’t understand,” and then ran away, clutching her book.
Lily sighed and sat staring in the window.

Hours flew by just like the world outside, and Lily had fallen asleep, only to be woken up by a sudden jolt of the train. She heard a voice out in the corridor.
“Anything off the trolley, dear?” an old lady called out. Lily stepped out of her carriage and looked at the trolley full of sweets. She bought a pack full of chocolate frogs, and a pack of every - flavoured beans. She was tempted with the pumpkin pasties, but then remembered her bet with Severus. Severus! Where on earth could he be? Maybe he’s searching the whole train for me… Or maybe he’s still on the platform! Thought Lily, and she desperately got out of her carriage, only to bump into an untidy looking boy. He grinned at her.
“There you are!” He said, as though they knew each other for ages, “There was a rumour going through the train that the descendant of Rose Evans is in this carriage!” he looked at her hopefully, and Lily said nothing.
“Well, is that you?” He persisted, and she had to give in. “Yes, I’m Lily Evans. Now, would you mind leaving me alone? I’m trying to find my friend.”
“Actually, Evans, I do mind.”
“You see, you look so pretty, and I do too, and I think we’d be perfect together!”
Lily gave the boy a rough stare. “Well, I don’t, so leave me alone!”
“No, wait, Eva-” but Lily was already running down the train. She could hear the boy running after her, but she had a head start. Not caring whether or not she found Severus anymore, Lily ran full speed until she was sure that she’d lost the boy. Then she turned into the next carriage and quickly bolted the door, panting. She turned around, only to see that the carriage had only one person in it; Reena.
The girl didn’t seem to be shocked at Lily’s entrance, and, not even looking up, she said, “It's you again.”
“Yes…”Lily started, “I…”
“Oh sit down.” she commanded, and Lily sat on the seat opposite Reena.
They chatted for a few minutes, and began steadily liking each other. Reena said nothing more strange as she did when Lily first met her, and she seemed like a nice person, only Lily noticed that she wasn’t confident of herself, and kept saying she will be expelled, and calling herself ugly. The trolley went past this carriage, and Reena asked her if she wanted anything.
“Oh, no thank you. I’ve had my fill!” laughed Lily, and Reena seemed disappointed and didn’t buy anything for herself.
“Do you have a lot of money?” She asked Lily.
“As a matter of fact, I never did, and now suddenly I have a lot.” Lily explained the Gringotts' visit to Reena. Apparently, Reena had plenty of money, and she told Lily that she could take as much as she liked of it.

“But that boy you went with doesn’t sound very nice. Why didn’t he believe that you didn’t know that you had the money?”
“I don’t know,” answered Lily, “But he’s still my friend.”
Reena stared at Lily. “Or is he…” she said mysteriously.
Bang! The door opened, cutting her off the rest of her sentence.
There stood Severus. He did not look happy.

“What is this supposed to mean?” he asked her, once they were out of earshot of Reena, “I look for you on the platform, you’re not there. Then I get in on the back of the train, (because it’s less crowded there), and you’re not there. So I go to the front of the train, wonder whether you’re there, and you’re not. Then I hear rumours that you are at the back of the train, and you aren’t there. So I go back to the front, and find you in a carriage, with a random girl we’ve never met before, with the door bolted so that I can’t come in, and you said yesterday that I was your friend!”
With finally finding Severus, and both of them looking for each other, Lily imagined how stupid they looked. At the other ends of the train all the time! She laughed, but immediately found that this was the wrong thing to do.
“So you find this funny! What a friend you are!”
And he stalked away to the back of the train, leaving Lily alone and not at all laughing anymore.
“Severus! You don’t understand! I didn’t bolt the carriage door for you not to come in! It was - “Lily tried, but The Boy didn’t turn around - again.

Lily understood what Severus felt but she couldn’t stop pondering on what Reena said.
Why did he not believe you? ... Or is he your friend?
It was the second time Severus didn’t believe her since their friendship. Friends should trust each other; and he didn’t trust her. But then, friends should also look for each other. Hadn’t she forgotten about him?
Swoosh! Something fluffy landed on her shoulder. Lily turned around in surprise, then calmed down as she turned and saw her snowy white owl perched on her shoulder. It had a letter attached to it. Lily frowned, then said softly, “Athe, who is that letter for? Surely not me, everyone barely knows me.” Athene Noctua, (Lily had decided to call her owl this) hooted sincerely and dropped the letter at her feet.
Curiously, Lily opened it to untidy looking handwriting.

Lily quickly re-formed the miss-spelt words, and was not pleased with what she read. She sighed, and folded the letter in half. If only this was from Severus, she thought dreamily...
“Excuse me,” a polite voice cut through her thoughts. “I am the head girl, Ebony, Ebony Jones, and it is my duty to remind everyone to change quickly from your muggle clothes to your robes, if they have not already. The train’s about to arrive. I’d hurry up if I were you!” Then Lily heard her murmur; “Penelope, have we done carriage 7? I don’t think so. Let’s check” Another girl appeared in view, smiled and waved at Lily, then ran away with Ebony. But Lily didn’t feel like smiling at all.
Then an idea struck her. She was inspired by the annoying letter scrunched in her right pocket. Quickly, Lily grabbed a spare piece of parchment from her bag, and a quill. She dipped it in ink and began writing in her curly handwriting.

Lily gave the letter to Athene, and said, smiling, “it’s for Severus.”
Then she felt a jolt of the train. They had arrived! Lily quickly threw on her robes, grabbed her trunk and shoved the remaining chocolate frog into her right pocket. She rushed out, looking for Severus, then thought that before he received her letter, he would probably not want to talk to her.
The ride to Hogwarts was fun, and Lily saw Severus when they arrived in the dining hall. She was unsure what to expect; did he read the letter? Was he still her friend? She looked at him inquiringly, but he deliberately avoided her eye. Then, quite suddenly, her juice spilt on the table. She looked up and saw her own owl, now splattered by orange juice, holding a tattered letter in its beak. She took the letter thankfully. It cocked its head at her.
“You want payment, Athe?” It tilted its head the other way. “Very well.” Lily handed him the chocolate frog she had kept in her pocket. Athene began nibbling it. Lily was about to go back to her food, when she remembered the note.

Lily sighed with relief. She smiled as she saw Severus wink at her from a different table.
“Ladies and gentlemen, boys and girls, welcome to Hogwarts, or, to most of you, welcome back!” a loud voice began, and Lily turned to face the headmaster at the front of the hall. Most students were looking at him admirably in awe, but Lily thought that he couldn’t be so good if Severus had called him ‘dumps’.
“Before you begin your delicious feast, we shall sort the first years into the houses. The sorting hat will describe them to you.”

On a chair at the front of the hall stood a very old, tattered - looking hat. Lily wondered why they didn’t replace it once in a while.
Suddenly, the brim of the hat opened and it began to sing;
Oh you may think that I’m dirty,
But don’t judge on what you see;
I’ll eat myself if you can find,
A hat cleverer than me.
So you can keep your robes on tight,
Your top hats nice and tall,
Because I am the Hogwarts sorting hat,
And I can cap you all!
You may belong in Hufflepuff,
If you are nice and kind,
You may belong in Ravenclaw,
If you’ve a steady mind.
You might belong in Gryffindor,
If you’ll do brave deeds to your end,
Or yet in clever Slytherin,
You’ll make a lot of friends.
And remember:
That there’s nothing in your head,
That the Sorting Hat can’t see,
Yes I see what house you want,
And, yes, I see what house you’ll be.

The whole hall broke into a round of applause, and Lily smiled. She would wish for Slytherin, and she and Severus would be in the same house. But wait... What about Reena? She definitely won’t make any friends, with her strange manners, and she wasn’t fit for Slytherin at all. But do I fit in Slytherin... Lily thought, and she realised that if Slytherins were cunning and mean, then she wouldn't be one of them. No. Hadn't the sorting hat warned them; There’s nothing in your head that the sorting hat can’t see ... It would see through a stupid wish, unless she really meant it.

I want to be Slythein. Lily told herself. I am a perfect Slytherin. I have all the traits for Slytherin... Yet did she.. Yes, I am going to be a Slytherin, She tried to convince herself, but a voice broke her out of her trance.
“Potter, James!” A strict voice called, and Lily turned to see the boy who had chased her on the train. She sighed deeply. He sat on the chair, and dumped the sorting hat on his head. It stayed there for at least half a minute, before shouting out,
“GRYFFINDOR!” very loudly. The 1st table clapped as James joined them.
“Next is Kendall, Agatha!” A very smug girl walked up to the stool, with a lot of lipstick and wavy, black hair. It only touched her head before shouting, “GRYFFINDOR!”
The other tables looked envious that Gryffindor got two people in a row. Agatha smiled and stole a quick glance at James for some reason.
“Whitney, Holly!” The tall teacher, that Lily had heard was called Professor McGongall, said. The hat waited a few seconds on Holly’s head before deciding to sort her Hufflepuff. The second table all roared and applauded her. She blushed red, and shook her golden curls away from her face as she ran to the Hufflepuff table. Lily was still desperately trying to convince herself.
Just wish to be Slytherin, wish to be Slytherin and your only friendship won’t be ruined.
But do I want to be Slytherin? A snide voice in her head snipped.
Yes I do. I want to be Slytherin, if only to contain my friendship with Severus.
But is he a true friend, if he needs you to be in the same house as him to be friends? What if he IS a Slytherin, mean and cunning and trying to trick you?
Stop doubting your friend, Lily told herself.
Your friend?
Yes, he’s my friend!
Or is he...
Or is he...
Reena’s voice filled her head. Could the girl be right? Lily pondered. Was Severus trying to trick her in some sort of twisted way?
Lily was so lost in her thoughts that she didn’t notice as Emmeline Tenley was sorted into Ravenclaw, nor as Theodore and Lucas Weston (twins) were sorted into Hufflepuff and Gryffindor. Suddenly Lily heard a name that sounded familiar... “Snape, Severus!” the emerald-robed teacher called. Lily jerked her head upwards. The hat barely touched Severus’ head when it screamed, “SLYTHERIN!”

Lily sighed. She saw Severus smile and wave in her direction, and she failed to return his smile.
“Nervous” Lily mouthed, and Severus gave her a thumbs up.
“Woodlock, Reena!” Lily held her breath.
“RAVENCLAW!” the hat demanded. Lily muttered to herself, Slytherin, Slytherin, Slytherin... until...
“Evans, Lily!” Lily stood up, aware of the gasp of the crowd. There were murmurs,
“The descendant of Rose Evans?” a person said.
“Could this be true?”
“She might be a better witch than her grandmother!”
“She’s muggle - born, I heard.”
“Preposterous!” another answered.
Lily wondered what her grandmother could have done to make her this popular. Shaking with nerves, she sat on the chair and inhaled sharply. Everyone watched her with baited breath. They all wanted Rose Evans' grandchild to be in their house, no matter how good a witch she was. The last thing Lily saw before the hat covered the world from her, was a tiny other table next to the four house ones, with only one girl at it that Lily did not recognise. She had dark curls, and... And the hall went dark behind the Sorting Hat. A small voice, presumably the hat, whispered in her ear. Ah, you have a lot of good qualities in you... it began, and Lily thought only one thing. Slytherin, please Slytherin. However, the hat answered; Such a loyal person... only wanting a house to please their best friend... yes, maybe Hufflepuff would be best for you... No, Lily thought back viciously. Very brave too, and determined to be Slytherin, brave, determined, the qualities of a Gryffindor... you seem to have wit too, a Ravenclaw... but a lot of ambition of a Slytherin... So where shall I place you? I can only think of one option... the house of all qualities...
And, after what seemed like an eternity, the hat screamed, “DECORUM!”

If you worry, don't do it. If you do it, don't worry.

The Great Hall was abuzz with chatter and excitement. Only Severus, who was ghost-white, said nothing. After a while, and after a few of Dumbledore’s whistles, the hall calmed down.
“Nothing extraordinary has happened.” The students seemed to think otherwise. There was a roar of protest, for every one thought that Lily was going to get into their house. “I forgot to mention; there is a fifth house in Hogwarts. It is so rare for a student to get into it, that the people who do get chosen for Decorum, have to choose a house that they will side with for every lesson. In fact, it is so rare for anyone to get in it, that the Hat spoke of it only once to let us know it existed. So far, we had only one student in that house,” Dumbledore gestured to the girl Lily had spotted alone, and Lily, still sitting on the stool, whispered, “Mystery solved.”

Then she realised that every eye in the Great Hall was on her, and Lily was not an attention seeker. She hated too much attention. She quickly jumped off the stool and placed the hat off her head onto the chair. She sat next to the girl and eyed Severus hopefully. He didn’t look at her. Lily sighed and, after the feast and the rest of the sorting ceremony (Molly Prewett was a Gryffindor, Arthur Weasley too, Lucius Malfoy a Slytherin and Lucinda Abbot a hufflepuff), ran quickly, hoping to catch up with him. She bumped into a 3rd year student, and the boy scowled at her. “Sorry.” she muttered, and when she admitted that the hall was empty of Severus, she walked up the corridors to her common room she shared with the other girl. But she didn’t notice what she had dropped when she bumped into that boy.

Meanwhile, Severus had stayed behind after the feast, lurking a corridor, determined to corner Lily and find an explanation. Maybe her common room is the other way. So Severus turned around, and began walking in the opposite direction. His eye caught a piece of parchment on the floor. Slowly, he kneeled down. It was smudged in chocolate. Probably some stupid love note and a bunch of chocolates that had already been eaten by the receiver. He picked it up, struggling to make out what the smudged writing said. It was almost all in melted chocolate, but Severus put together the rest of the words.

Severus frowned as he read it. True, parts were smudged with the milk chocolate, so maybe it was not exactly as he read it above, but the meaning was definite. You did seem to like me. Severus re-read, his heart in his throat. Your bff. They were best friends? We meeted. They met before? Pleese anser quickly. They have communicated by post? James Potter. James Potter. James Potter. The one who’d stolen Lily from him even before they’d got sorted into houses. Severus Snape hated James Potter right now, and they never even met before.
