New beginnings

Hogwarts express

The train is filling up quickly as eager students get in from all directions, first years waving goodbye through the windows, older students eagerly running to their friends, nervous kids clinging to their luggage...the usual.

Well, the usual for those who aren't new, of course.

Azrael isn't used to this much chaos, especially not in such a tight space, he's trying to shuffle past kids to find an empty cabin...or at least a semi empty one.

He's quiet on his feet as he drags his luggage behind with him, Big, round eyes taking their time to peek inside each individual cabin, some full, others semi empty but equally loud...

Is it really THIS hard to find a quiet cabin to sit in?

Regardless, he'd prefer an empty one as to not spook his future classmates...after all, he isn't exactly the cutest kid out there.

Not with the overly pale skin and the huge, eerie eyes to match- it's something he's used to being stared at for, not that it's okay, that is.

Finally, he found an empty cabin to sit on and quickly slipped inside, blinking for the first time in at least a minute as he huffed and hauled his luggage to one of the overhead compartments of the cabin he's in, quietly sitting down, hands on his lap as he looked out the window...his parents had already left, they aren't the type to enjoy so much noise...(Or sunlight), even just taking Azrael to the train station was a miracle to begin with.

He had expected them to stay home, or at least inside the car...still, they wanted to say goodbye- even if for a short moment- being up and about during the day was not something Azrael was used to seeing his parents doing...or used to seeing in himself for that matter.

Still, he hopes that the train ride will last as long as possible so he can at least mentally prepare for the sorting ceremony...his mother has described it as the most anxious and stressful moment of her life, so he wasn't looking forward to it- then again, when is his mother NOT anxious about something outside their quiet home?

He doesn't have a preference for a house, although his parents had placed bets with their friends on where they'd think he'd end up...most voted for Hufflepuff or ravenclaw.

Either way, they reassured him they'd be proud regardless of where he ended up.

By now, he's blankly staring out the window, his eyes will probs get dry soon...he has a bad habit of not blinking when staring at something (or someone), a habit that has gotten him multiple creepy nicknames from his neighbors, of course.

"The Sun's shadow knows no fear, no dawn. Is the watcher always watched, or simply drawn?"

New beginnings
Meave Fenhollow stood awkwardly in the narrow aisle of the Hogwarts Express, her suitcase bumping against her leg as the chatter of excited students filled the air. She shifted from foot to foot, glancing into each cabin she passed, hoping to find one that wasn’t already bursting with laughter and conversation. Every compartment seemed full—until she spotted one with only a single boy sitting by the window, gazing out at the misty platform.

Her heart fluttered with uncertainty. Should I ask? What if he says no? Gathering a bit of courage, she slid open the door and gave a small, nervous smile. Um—mind if I sit here? The boy nodded, barely looking up, Meave slipped inside the cabin, taking the seat across from him.

As she set her bag beside her, the train gave a low whistle, and the platform outside began to drift away. Meave pressed her hand to the cool window, watching the station blur into the countryside. A quiet thrill stirred in her chest—this was it. The start of something new. Suddenly, she felt nervous, scared even for the journey ahead.

New beginnings
Azrael blinked, slowly turning his head to look at the girl sitting beside him- as he started speaking in his usual calm, monotone voice...

"..hello...I assume you're also a first year." He mumbled, eyes narrowing as he looked down at her uniform- lacking house colors just like his did.

"I'm Azrael, it's nice to meet you." He mumbled...has he blinked at all as of right now? Probably only once the whole time he's been here, still, he seemed curious when looking at her.

"...and your name is...?"

He asked, titling his head slightly- the sunlight peaking out through the window making him to appear a bit more pale than he already is...he seems almost bothered by it, body leaning slightly away as if trying to dodge the sun rays.

He might just be a really weird kid...that, or he's been living under a rock for years- still, he seems to be trying his best- especially since he hasn't ran away into another cabin like a startled mouse...he IS recoiling into the shade of the cabin though, doesn't seem like he enjoys the sunlight all that much, even if it's soft at this time of day.

Hopefully he makes new friends today, maybe then his parents will be put at ease that their son will have people to rely one once they're gone, they don't enjoy the idea of him being completely alone in life later on- which was one of the reasons why they quickly decided that they should in fact send him to Hogwarts instead of finding a way to homeschool them or find him a trusted tutor... they'd hate for their only son to grow up without friends, because despite their own stoicism and calmness- they worry and care deeply for their son.

(Hey! Don't worry about not responding right away, it's not necessary to respond immediately, you can take hours lol or even a day or two, there's really no rush, so if you're busy I rather you finish what you're doing so you can actually enjoy what you're writing- but yeah, that's it

Meave glanced at the boy sitting across from her, unsure if she should say something. The silence between them was starting to feel heavy, and her heart thumped a little too fast. Finally, she lifted her hand in a small, hesitant wave.

Uh—hi, she said quietly, her voice barely louder than the hum of the train. I’m Meave. Yeah, a first year, too. She gave a timid smile before quickly looking down, cheeks warming with embarrassment. That sounded awkward, she thought, wishing she could disappear into her seat.

Her fingers began to fidget with the hem of her robe, twisting the fabric between them—a habit she’d picked up whenever she got nervous. The soft material was grounding, helping her focus on something other than how unsure she felt.

She risked another glance at the boy, trying to read his expression. He probably thinks I’m weird, she thought, tucking a loose strand of hair behind her ear. Still, she added softly,
Nice to meet you, her words sincere but trembling a little, as if afraid of being ignored.

"...you seem pretty nervous." He mumbled, head titling slightly like a curious owl- it's almost unnatural in the way he moves... anyone who knows better can tell he's just like that though, still, it doesn't help in the slightest.

"Is it the train...or just the idea of going to Hogwarts?" Azrael asked, eyes squinting ever so slightly, as if trying to read her- maybe even figure out if she's anxious or just nervous about her first day of school...like most people are, of course- still, he's not doing a really good job at trying to appear friendly and approachable.

"From what I was told, there's not much to be worried about...it could be fun once the nerves go away."

Maybe it could be fun for him too? Well, once he gets used to all the noise and constant crowd gathered inside the school that is...it will probably take a while, but if he manages to make friends- then maybe it will turn out to be faster than he'd ever think he could get used to something, especially in an unknown environment like Hogwarts- he can wonder what it would be like all he wants...but really, the experience will depend on how he takes it- not how others describe it or feel about it, especially not his mother's anxiousness towards her...his father did well by telling her to go easy on the storytelling, otherwise he would have refused to go right away.

I think it’s both the train ride and the idea of going to Hogwarts as a Muggle-born, Meave admitted softly, her gaze fixed on the window rather than the boy in front of her. The countryside blurred past in streaks of green and gold, but her thoughts felt tangled and heavy. But mostly…she paused, her voice dipping lower, I kind of got sent here because of a disagreement with my parents.

For a moment, the rhythm of the train filled the silence that followed. Meave stopped fidgeting with her robe and folded her hands neatly in her lap, trying to keep them still.

She wasn’t sure why she’d said that out loud—she hadn’t planned to. It wasn’t exactly something she wanted people to know right away.
Great job, Meave. Tell a stranger your entire life story, she scolded herself internally.

Her eyes flicked toward him briefly, then away just as fast.
Sorry, that probably sounds weird, she murmured, forcing a faint, nervous smile. I just… talk too much when I’m anxious.

"hm...well, do you have any preference for what house you want to be in?"

Azrael mumbled, turning to look back at the window- it's sunny outside, a bit too much for his liking...still, it's not like he can do anything about it, not when there's still 9 hours left for the whole ride to Hogwarts...it's gonna be a really long day, and he's NOT looking forward to it... he'd rather be back home with his parents, following them around, sitting in a corner like he's part of the decoration (his definition of relaxing), maybe eating something instead of surviving on snacks for the whole ride? Regardless, he can't turn back now.

"...I don't have much of a preference myself, I'm fine anywhere."

And truly, he really is fine everywhere, as long as he gets the darkest corner of the room...then he won't really mind where he ends up in, hopefully somewhere quiet though- although it's probably too much to ask, especially with how many students he can see on the train...it's like wondering if a weeding is gonna be calm and quiet, you'd imagine it is- but really, there's just not a lot of calm all around, so right now... hoping everyone will be too tired from the ride to fuss much is his only hope to settle in well.

Jada wasn’t really sure how to feel. She’d never been away from her parents for so long but she’d finally get a chance to make her mark somewhere. It was a fresh start, a new beginning, she’d make it worth it.

She walked along the corridor scanning the cabins for any available seats. She stopped when she reached one with a girl and boy who seemed about her age. Perhaps they were just starting as well?

“Hey there, mind if I join you?”, she asked, slightly nervous. As an only child, she never had to do anything she didn’t want to so really the question was whether she wanted to sit with them or not.

She looked at the boy and girl already sitting in the cabin, they looked nice enough. But looks could be deceiving. Maybe this would even be an opportunity to make new friends. Who knew it there were the right sort to or not, but it was a risk she was willing to take.

Without waiting for an answer, she lifted her trunk and placed it onto the overhead compartment then plonked herself onto the nearest seat and pulled out one of her new school books and mumbled a rushed “Thanks”.

Now, Azrael didn't mind...of course, he was just glad the people inside the cabin weren't loud and rowdy- he would have probably lost his cool by now and sat in the small walkway between cabins and the side of the train...that didn't seem like the best idea though, especially with the trolley lady walking around asking if anyone wants sweets- he'd probably get accidentally bumped into multiple times, and it's not something he'd enjoy experiencing... regardless, he's here now, so he should probably get to know them better.

"...I'm Azrael, and you are..?"

He asked, big, owl like eyes narrowing as he turned to stare intently at her, as if his eyes were piercing through her, when really- that was just his way of staring- a weird one at that, he should probably work on how to appear mor friendly...it probably won't work (he's tried before, always a fail), but still..50th time's the charm! Like his father always says when he catches him trying to smile in the mirror and he looks more like something out of nightmares rather than a nice person trying to make friends...

But maybe, this time WOULD be different? Like his mother told him, there's gotta be someone out there who enjoys his presence regardless of how he acts, maybe he'll find that person here- or maybe in his new dorms...maybe not at all- even if it fails, he'll probably just get a pet and consider it done.

That's not exactly ideal though, and it will probably be a last resort when he's older...for now, he should concentrate on trying his best.

Jada closed her book with a sigh, placing it in her small backpack. It had been a birthday gift from her parents on her last birthday. They knew, or at least were hoping, she would go to hogwarts but hadn’t told her anything about it. Wouldn’t have wanted to ruin the surprise of receiving the letter, would they.

“Jada,” she replied cautiously, “Jada Blake”. They would find out eventually anyway, being in the same school. Lying wouldn’t do any good.

She had originally intended to spent the trip reading ahead in their course books and perhaps trying out a few spells. It couldn’t hurt to be prepared. Maybe she could get on the teachers’ good sides. She looked around the cabin, noticing the dark red wallpaper, Scarlett was the word for it, the schools signature colour. The seats were plush, comfortable enough for longer journeys, though not her favorite.

Making friends would be in her best interest. Nobody wanted to be a loner in class, last one picked for projects, always working alone, not having anyone to chat to. Somebody had to make the first move, why shouldn’t it be me.

“I assume it your first year as well, what do you think it’s like, Hogwarts?”
