Ellie walked into the astronomy tower as she had finally finished her day at Hogwarts and desperately needed a break from the noise. She wanted to be in charge of her own actions for once. She wanted to do well in her classes, but the pressure of her anxiety weighed heavily on her chest.
As she made her way up the stairs, her thoughts ran wild with what she could do to make friends while she was here. She had been too shy to talk to anyone today, unsure if they would be nice or not. She had to brainstorm ways to have her first conversation with someone without appearing foolish.
As she finally made it to the top of the tower, she walked over towards the edge and sat, her feet dangling in the sky. She scanned the horizon and tried to find any constellations. None stood out to her. She had never been good at identifying the constellations, and the pit in her stomach only grew with the realization that she had so much to learn and so much work to do.
Ellie wrung her hands and picked at the skin of her thumb. She mentally scolded herself for her bad habit and set her hands down on the floor beneath her, feeling the unswept dirt and dust from students' footprints.

Isabella pushed open the door to the astronomy tower, the faint creak echoing against the stone walls. She carried a sketchbook tucked under her arm. She had planned to draw the night sky while the castle finally quieted down. The air was cool and calm. A welcome change from the endless noise of the day.
At the top, she noticed another girl sitting near the edge. It was girl with clear white skin and curly brown hair. She looked pretty and Isabella wanted to make her an acquaintance. But Isabella slowed, debating whether to interrupt. That's when she noticed the girl’s hunched shoulders and restless hands. Something about the way she picked at her thumb made Isabella pause. She knew that look. It was the weight of a long day.
“Hi,” Isabella said gently as she walked over, settling down a short space away. She placed her sketchbook on her lap and glanced at the horizon. “It’s peaceful up here, isn’t it? Almost feels like the stars give you room to breathe.”
She studied the girl’s expression for a moment, her voice lowering. “You seem nervous. What’s wrong?” Her tone was more curios than prying. “I’m Isabella Bernard. I usually come here to sketch when things feel heavy. What’s your name?”

Madeline Tomlinson had been wandering the castle halls long after curfew — because really, what kind of witch went to bed early on their first week? She’d been hoping to find a secret passageway or at least an interesting portrait to mess with, but instead her feet carried her up the Astronomy Tower. Maybe she was actually just wanted the peace the astronomy toer had to give........hopefully.
She shoved open the door, her messy curls bouncing as she stepped inside. Tonight she wore her crop-top hoodie, sleeves tugged half-over her hands, and her shoes squeaked against the stone floor. Mischief was written all over her face — that grin she always got right before trouble started.
But then she froze.
Two girls were already there: one sketching, calm as the night, and another sitting at the edge with her shoulders tight and her eyes far too lost for a first day at Hogwarts. Maddy’s grin fell just a little. She wasn’t great with feelings — she’d rather pull a prank than talk about them — but she knew what sad looked like, and she didn’t like it one bit.
Her eyes took in the Hufflepuff girl. Yeah, she remembered now — they’d sat a few seats apart in Charms earlier, and Maddy had definitely spotted her in their common room once or twice. That was reason enough to step in. She never left someone she knew alone in times of needs.........even if she was not good at comforting people.
“Oi,” she said, as she walked closer. “Don’t tell me you’re already homesick. We just got here.”
She plopped down beside the girl without waiting for an invitation, legs dangling over the edge. After some time when she didn't got a reply, she nudged her shoulder gently against the girl’s. “Know what I do when I feel like the whole world’s too much? I imagine my brothers’ faces when I dump a dungbomb in their shoes. Works every time.” She grinned trying to lighten the mood.
Her eyes flicked up to the stars, a little smile tugging at her lips. “But… if you’d rather just sit here, that’s fine too. Sometimes staring at the sky makes everything feel smaller. Kinda like the universe telling you it’s gonna be alright.”
She glanced sideways and added, “Though for the record, if you start crying, I’ll have to make a joke about it. It’s in my contract as a Tomlinson.”
Finally, she leaned back on her hands, glancing between the two and said, “I’m Madeline — Maddy. Hufflepuff, like you,” she added with a smile toward the nervous girl. “I’ve seen you around class and in the common room.” Then with a playful nod towards the Gryffindor girl, she grinned. “And I guess tonight I get to meet a Gryffindor too. Not a bad trade for coming to the astronomy towers at night.”

Isabella looked up as the girl burst into the tower. At first, she wasn’t sure what to make of her, but the way she sat down and softened her voice made Isabella relax a little. She gave her a small and polite smile. “I’m Isabella,” she said, just loud enough for Maddy to hear. “Isabella Bernard. First-year Gryffindor.”
Then she leaned in a bit, lowering her voice even more as she added, “I’m actually doing fine. I mean, I do miss my family. I think we all do, a little. But I think…she’s been having a really bad day.” She nodded gently toward the Hufflepuff girl at the edge, her expression growing more serious. Isabella carefully closed her sketchbook and set it aside on the stone ledge. She scooted closer to Ellie and, without saying anything at first, reached out to place her hand gently over the girl’s.
She gave her a warm, steady look. Kind and full of quiet patience. “Will you tell us what’s wrong,” she asked softly, “so we can help you?” She didn’t let go, just lightly patted Ellie’s hand in a steady, comforting rhythm. Not rushing her but just letting her know she wasn’t alone.

Madeline nodded towards her with a kind smile.I’m Isabella, Isabella Bernard. First-year Gryffindor.
Madeline rocked back on her hands, glancing between Isabella and Ellie. Isabella’s words hung in the air, gentle, a quiet request to help, and Maddy gave a small nod of agreement. Will you tell us what’s wrong, so we can help you?
“She’s right, y’know,” Maddy said, her tone softer than before. “You don’t have to spill everything if you don’t want to, but if you do… well, you’ve got a Gryffindor who are very brave with nerves of steel and a Hufflepuff who’s basically allergic to sadness sitting right here. Kind of a safe combo, don’t you think?”
She nudged Ellie’s shoulder lightly, trying to coax a smile. “And if talking feels too heavy, that’s fine too. We can just sit here and bully the stars into keeping us company. Or—hear me out—I can distract you with stories about my brothers. Like the time they thought it would be hilarious to stick a dungbomb under my pillow. I didn’t even notice until it went off in the middle of the night. My mum nearly had a heart attack, and I smelled like rotten eggs for three days straight.”
Madeline grinned at the memory, if her brothers were here, she imagined, they wouldnt be able to stand this and would probably start planning another stupid trick to cheer her up. Maddy turned back to Ellie saying, “So yeah… if you wanna talk, we’ll listen. And if not, I’ll just keep embarrassing myself with family stories until you laugh. Either way, you’re not sitting here alone.”

Ellie blinked, stunned at the sudden warmth surrounding her. Her heart thudded so hard she thought they might hear it over the faint breeze. The two girls seemed so genuine and so considerate; perhaps she had been silly to be so scared of her peers. The nervous knot in her stomach loosened slightly as she looked between the two girls. Her hands, once wringing and picking at her thumb, rested limply on her lap as she tried to find her voice.
“My name is Ellie. I… I guess I’ve just had a really overwhelming day,” she admitted softly, her voice barely above a whisper.
“Everything feels… loud. And everyone seems so confident and sure of themselves, and I just… I don’t.”
She exhaled shakily, staring down at her dangling feet. She wondered if perhaps these two had ever felt the same way, unexplainably lonely in a school of hundreds of people.
“I’ve never really been good at talking to people… and today, it just… got to me.”
Ellie let out a small, nervous laugh, a little wobbly but genuine.
“Dungbomb stories… might help,” she admitted, her voice growing steadier with each word. She smiled bigger than she had since school started.

Isabella gave Ellie a warm smile, her eyes kind and understanding. She shifted a little closer on the ledge, careful not to make Ellie feel crowded.
“I totally get that,” Isabella said gently. “The first few hours here were really hard for me too. I remember thinking how everyone already had it all figured out, and I was just… floating around, hoping no one noticed how nervous I was.”
She let out a small chuckle, brushing a strand of hair behind her ear. “But the truth is, I think a lot more people feel that way than they let on. It just doesn’t always show on the outside.”
Isabella glanced at Ellie’s hands, now calm in her lap. “You’re really brave for saying all that, you know. Most people just fake being okay. But you were honest. That’s way more impressive than pretending to be confident.”
Then she grinned. “And as for Dungbomb stories... oh, we’ve got plenty of those. Right, Maddy?” She nudged the other girl playfully. “Like the one where someone supposedly set one off in Potions last year and blamed it on the Slytherins. The whole room supposedly smelled like rotten eggs for days and the professor was livid.”

Madeline snorted and gave Isabella a look.
“‘Supposedly’? Nah, that was legendary. I wasn’t even here yet and I still heard about it. Pretty sure dungbomb chaos runs in my family. Tomlinson trademark.”
She leaned in closer to Ellie, lowering her voice like it was top-secret. “My brother once set one off in our shed right before Mum sent us in to clean. Even the gnomes bailed. Whole garden smelled like death for a week.”
Maddy shrugged, grinning as she remembered everything she had done with her siblings to annoy their mother so mad that she just sighs now. She said to Ellie, “Stick with me and you’ll never be short on disaster stories. Between Isabella’s sketches and my nonsense, you’ve got yourself a solid welcome squad.”
She tipped her chin up at the stars, arms sprawled out like she owned the tower. That's just how she was, careless, and can fit in anywhere, just not in History class. She smiled and turned to the girls saying, “honestly? Forget constellations. Pretty sure we’re already the brightest mess up here tonight.”

Ellie laughed before she could stop herself, the sound bubbling out of her chest and surprising her. It wasn’t loud, more like a hiccup of joy, but it was real. She ducked her head quickly, her cheeks warming.
“Brightest mess,” she repeated, her voice softer, but with a hint of amusement threading through it.
“I like that.”
The weight in her chest felt a little lighter now, as if the stars overhead really had stretched some of their quiet into her. She glanced between Isabella and Maddy, eyes shining.
“I was so scared tonight, about… everything. But now I think maybe it’s not so impossible after all. Maybe I don’t have to get everything right. Maybe I just need… people like you.”
Ellie grinned, a real one that reached her eyes. She tilted her face upward, letting the cool night air brush her cheeks. The castle below felt distant now, the noise and chaos softened. For the first time since arriving, she didn’t feel like she was drowning. She felt… grounded. Maybe even a little hopeful. And as the three of them sat together under the sprawl of endless stars, Ellie thought that maybe, just maybe, this was the start of something good.
She turned to Isabella. “You sketch? So do I. What kind of art do you like?”

Isabella smiled, a little surprised but happy, and leaned back on her hands. “Yeah,” she said, brushing a loose strand of hair from her face. “I’ve been sketching since I was, like, eight. Mostly just stuff I see. Trees, buildings, people who don’t know I’m drawing them.” She laughed softly. “Sometimes I make up scenes, like places I wish were real.”
She glanced over at Ellie, eyes thoughtful. “I like using pencils the most. I don’t know, there’s something calming about it. No pressure to make it perfect. You can always erase and try again.” She paused, then added, “Kinda like life, I guess.”
Isabella looked up at the stars, her expression growing softer. “I never really show people my sketchbook. It always felt… too personal, like opening a piece of my brain. But tonight feels different. You guys don’t make me want to hide.”
She glanced at Ellie and smiled. “I’d love to see your art sometime. Maybe we could sketch together?” The breeze tugged at her hoodie, and she tucked her knees closer to her chest. “I think you’re right,” she said quietly. “It doesn’t have to be perfect. Maybe what matters most is having people who get it.” She gave Ellie a nod. “People like us.”
Isabella turned to Madeline, "Do you sketch Maddy?”
