First week of Hogwarts - Afternoon after breakfast

Nick was loving his time in Hogwarts, really he was! But there were quite a few things he was still getting used to, that's for sure.

For starters, the classes were a tad too early for his liking, being someone who often woke up late, if it wasn't the occasional item dropped or student scrambling out of the dormitory in the morning, for sure he would oversleep every single first class and breakfast. If his stomach didn't wake him up at five in the morning to prepare itself for the morning feast.

Secondly, as he imagined, not all the classes really caught his interest. Potions was amazing, he already enjoyed that one quite a bit, and charms was also very entertaining for him. But the books in front of him had absolutely nothing to do with those two.

Transfiguration was a bore, and with it came books upon books of assignments he already dreaded to read through. But his father had always told him that life wasn't fun and that we need to make sacrifices and go through boring things in order to really experience life. It was a inspiring though, Nick thought.

Didn't make the words on the books seem any more interesting though.

At first he was focused, he brought a couple of pastries from breakfast and devoured it all in less than a couple of pages of his reading. Then slowly melted against the table until he was barely skimming through the words in front of him. By Merlin he was bored.

So, almost without thinking, he started folding his blank parchments, turning them into all sorts of things, little origami swans, flowers, dragons, a couple of frogs and even a little horse. By two hours in he had already made a entire army of creatures on his table.

And his book? Still on page 5.

Lilith walked in the library, more out of boredom than anything else. It was her first week at Hogwarts and she did have fun, but sometimes the days seemed too... calm. She wanted agitation, some action. That's why she pushed the library's doors this afternoon. The library, weird choice when you're looking for noise ? Certainely, but Lilith didn't give a damn about being coherent.

Okay, fine. She wanted to see the books from the restricted area. Unfortunately, the restricted area is, in fact, restricted, so she couldn't access the books. Disappointed, she started walking between the shelves, vaguely searching for a book that could distract her from her boredom. Studying ? Nah. She definitely didn't feel like it.

As she was walking through the room, she started shivering. One of the large windows was open, letting a cold breeze dance in the silent room. Suddenly, something caught her eye. Something small, pushed by the wind. Lilith bent down to pick it up.

It was a small parchment swan. Lilith looked at it, taking in the details of the paper bird. The precision and the care with which it had been made intrigued her. She took a few steps, looking for the swan maker.

Her gaze landed on a boy with dark hair at a table near her. She spotted several parchment creatures on the table, and he seemed absorbed in creating a new one.

Lilith felt a grin grow on her face. She had found her bird maker. The swan in her hand, she walked over to the boy's table, stopping right in front of him.

"Hey." She said confidently. Still smiling, she showed him the little swan. "I think you lost that."

"I am studying!" Nick exclaimed to absolutely no one as if he had been threatened at wand point. He heard a shush come from another table somewhere and his cheeks grew pink for a moment.

Then he actually looked at the person who had spoken to him, a girl his age holding one of his creations. Truth be told, he was so focused on his other project that he hadn't even noticed that one had slipped away. And some others were soon following since a few were already slowly drifting towards the edge of the table.

Nick was a rather interesting sight, if you could call him that, his hair was black like the night itself, but his most prominent feature was his eyes. Nick has big round and bright green eyes with a very bad staring problem. He would look into someone's soul for at least a few seconds before reminding himself he is supposed to answer with words.

"Hi- Hello- Hi!" He stammered before cleaning his throat and offering a hand to pick up the swan. "Right- Thanks! I didn't even see they flew off like that! Sorry, do you wanna sit down here? I can move out if you need the table!" Is not like he was studying anyways.

Lilith's eyebrows raised at his response. He looked like he was doing something forbidden, while he was just folding harmless little paper dragons. Funny. She noticed the few seconds it took him to answer, how he cleared his throat, the way he stammered. Okay, he's socially awkward, she could work with that.

"I can move out if you need the table", he said, already ready to leave.

"No, that's fine, you can stay," she said like it was her table and not his. "I was bored anyway." She sat down on the chair next to him, glancing briefly at the book laying open on the table. She wasn't the only one who didn't feel like studying, apparently.

Reaching out, she took back the little swan, and, delicately playing with it, she looked at the boy by underneath her lashes.

"I'm Lilith Darcy. Nice to meet you."

Nonchalantly leaning back, she looked him up and down, not bothering to hide the fact that she was assessing him anymore. He looked her age, he was certainly a first year. His hair was dark, laybe even darker than Lilith's, thing you didn't see very often. Like many people with blue or green eyes, he seemed to be staring right into your soul. Well, when he wasn't stuttering.
She smiled.

"Are you nervous ?"

Socially awkward was no exaggeration when it came to the boy. He didn't really speak with anyone his age before coming to Hogwarts, so the idea of socializing with other kids was, quite literally, thrusted upon him as soon as he got into the school. But it was a temporary problem, he was sure of it, just give him a couple of hours of conversation and he should be a lot more comfortable with it.

Although a girl he didn't know coming to sit with him so nonchalantly did make it a bit more difficult for him to prepare himself for conversation.

"Nervous? Yes, no.. maybe? " He gave a little awkward laugh before playing with his half finished piece. He kept folding each portion delicately, like each one was a masterpiece that deserved delicate care.

"I'm Nicholas - Nick! Just... Just Nick. Nick Lazarus" He finally introduced himself with his best polite smile. "It's nice to meet you too..."

Then he stared down at the book he hadn't even gotten to the halfway point of, there was no way he could study this right now. "I was studying Transfiguration... But yeah it's really boring... So I started making these little guys, my Godmother taught me how to make them years ago and it's a fun distraction I suppose..."

Lilith's eyes followed his fingers on the paper. Such focus, such precision was something she'd never seen before.

"That's cool", she said, still fidgeting with the paper bird she picked up earlier. Silence. Well, the conversation was going crazy, she thought. His attention was back on the piece he was working on. Her eyes fell on the Ravenclaw emblem embroided on his clothes. It made sense. And his last name rang a bell in the girl's mind. She was sure she heard it somewhere before, but she couldn't quite remember where. Was he pure blooded ? He had to be, otherwise she wouldn't have such a feeling she knew his last name.

Looking for a topic of conversation, she searched her mind for memories of him, but she was sure she hadn't talked to him in the past week. They were both new after all, and the first days at Hogwarts had been quite intense for everyone, so nobody had time to get to know the others yet. She had no idea if they had even been in the same room before, except for the Great Hall during the Repartition.

And didn't have any classes with him, that was for sure. Or did she ?

"Do we have any classes together ?"

It was quite a name to have, it sounded a lot fancier than it truly was, Richard Lazarus was a renown writer the Ravenclaw that he was, many of his books were in the library they sat at right now, most of them about potions and ingredients of potions. Not that Nick was very eager to go hunt for his father's legacy around the many, many shelves around them.

Meanwhile, his mother Magdalene was a singer, a dancer, a quite talented one at that, both pure blood and both that managed to pass on the most confusing set of traits to the boy sitting there. He wasn't exactly the studious type, such a Ravenclaw he was, for sure. But just as creative as his mother, the sprinkles of a Hufflepuff at heart. A Ravenpuff if you will.

"I did see you during the sorting, you got sorted before me, but you were already at your table when I got called, I'm pretty sure! And I guess we have some classes together... I think I saw you during my first Charms class, I was a bit distracted to really pay attention to that. We did learn a lot of fun stuff there though..." Nick tried his best to remember every detail of his past few days, it had been very rushed and very stressful for everyone. "Did I see you on our first flying class? Maybe, I think..."

Flying class, flying class... Did she see him during flying class ? She had no idea. She was too busy trying not to die, clinging to her broom like a terrified cat to a tree.

"Hum... yeah, maybe ?"

Lilith didn't know what to say now. She looked for something else, a topic of conversation, anything so it wouldn't become akward. She was still bored, and she had no idea what they could talk about. She didn't see herself spending her afternoon in the library. Maybe they could do something else ?

"Hey, you wanna go somewhere ? We could go explore, see what's going on in the school."

She had a feeling he was as bored as her. If he followed her, they could go explore the maze that was the school. Lilith didn't really have the time to during this first week and she was dying of curiosity. She had dreamt to have the freedom to explore a place like Hogwarts for her whole life, and now she finally had the chance, just nobody to do this with. But she was sure she could convince him. Like, everyone would absolutly love to explore Hogwarts. A magic school must have secrets hidden in every corridor, right ?

"Come on", she insisted. "It's gonna be amazing ! Imagine that we discover something cool ? We could even see a ghost !"

She let her enthousiasm show, hoping it would convince him.

It was very possible they had flying classes together, Nick was a bit too concentrated on not losing his breakfast while clinging to a broom for dear life to truly notice though.

The truth was, yeah Nick was beyond bored, studying was awful and anyone who said otherwise was probably... A normal, good Ravenclaw student perhaps? Definitely not Nick, if there was a thing Nick definitely wasn't was a studious Ravenclaw.

He closed the book so quickly when she asked him if he wanted to explore, because yeah he wanted to explore! "Oh I thought you just wanted to say hi! I'm in." He quickly started gathering all his belongings, which was, surprisingly, only the book and one of the best looking origamis he had made that evening.

"Where do you wanna go? Oh! There' so many things we can see, I heard there's a giant squid in the lake, we can probably try seeing it! I don't know if you can though, maybe the squid will be closer to the surface and we can see it pass by! Won't that be fun!" It was like a switch was flipped, and he was beaming like the brightest star. One that never stopped talking.

Oh god. Oh god.
What did she do ? The boy just lit up and started talking. Fast. Like he would never stop, which was, she had to admit, kinda of funny. Kind of cool.
Okay, he's gonna be funnier than planned. This afternoon may be less boring than expected. Lilith returned the smile he was giving her.
"I love that idea ! I heard so many things about Hogwarts and I can't wait to see everything !"
She stood up, ready to go. He had gathered his things and seemed ready too. Lilith smiled at the sight of the Tranfiguration book. He didn't even bother to read past the introduction. To be honest, it was hands down the worst thing she had ever read, so she wasn't blaming him. Lilith realized she was still holding one of the paper swans, the one she had picked up between the shelves.
"Hum, do you mind if I keep this ?" She said showing him once again the paper creature. "I kind of like it."
That was true. Lilith, even if she would never admit it, liked delicate things. That swan, with his wings carefully folded, was perfect. The amount of details for something so small was amazing.
