History For Two With Too Little History

It was funny really, her and the boy she had met at the sorting ceremony, Mikey had gotten a long great and talked a lot that day but she hadn't seen Mikey after that. Maybe it was because they were in different houses. She had a couple of classes with him, hence why they were doing this project with each other, but she hadn't talked to him in... exactly a month. Which was why she was so excited for the History of Magic project they had to do, even if it was a History project.

Ellie walked into the library and began searching for his familiar face. There was so many shelf's and tables in the library! She walked around one and there, she saw him. Sitting at a table, reading a book. She walked over to him and pulled out a chair.

"Hi!" She said, smiling and sitting down.

She looked at the book he was holding, as he said 'Hi' back. Oh no! I forgot to bring the book on goblins!

"Umm... I'll be right back..." She told him, softly and slowly. As soon as the words left her mouth, she quickly walked back to the shelf's to find a book on goblins, grabbing three, she walked back to the table and placed the books down.

"So... should we start note taking now?" She asked, unsure of what to do next.

Mikey observed as Ellie scooted off nearly the instant she arrived, dodging behind the towering bookshelves lost in the labyrinthine aisles as if she'd been schooled for library reconnaissance work. He couldn't suppress the half-smile that pulled on his lips. At least she recalled the goblins, at least.

He clicked his notebook shut and attempted to appear more ready than he was. She was back a moment with a load of books that honestly could've weighed as much as the rebellion. He glared at the stack in mock sternness. "If we don't get anything out of all of those, I believe the goblins may be allowed to rebel again."

Then he sat up a little straighter, brushing a bit of lint off his robes like that would suddenly make him feel more academically competent. “Yeah,” he said, nodding to her question. “Note taking sounds like a good place to start. I’ve already jotted down a few things about the Ruckford Riots, mostly questions, really. Like, why would the Ministry insist on goblins complying with laws they weren't even permitted to assist in drafting? It's a little crazy.

He flipped his notebook over so she could read the neat but slightly cramped writing. There were arrows and question marks and one scrawled doodle of a goblin with the annotation "Not My Treaty.".

"I thought, well, we can both choose a bit of the rebellion to cover and then meld them together. Like. you do the political and I do social affairs? Or vice versa. Or just split it up into chapters. Or fling parchment in the air and see what we catch. I am happy to do whatever you think best." He smiled faintly.

And then, like he'd just remembered something, he spoke more softly, "It's nice to see you again. I remembered our discussion of sorting, and I wondered if you'd forgotten it. But I didn’t. Just… so you know." His voice let go a little at the end, and he dropped a sheepish look down at his book, turning the page like it was somehow going to hide his truth. And then he looked up again. "So. Goblins?

Mikey was talking about some of the things he had discovered in the book when Ellie came back to the table, arms heavy with books. Ellie nodded. That sounded good. He mentioned something then about one person doing the political side and one doing social, Ellie nodded again, and smiled, something she really needed to stop doing!

“It's nice to see you again. I remembered our discussion of sorting, and I wondered if you'd forgotten it. But I didn’t. Just… so you know." Mikey said to her, looking down at his book before saying, “So. Goblins?”

Ellie smiled, “You too. I have ‘t forgotten, and if you need to tell the frogs something… I’m willing too, in front of a bunch of people. Yeah, goblins.”

Mikey was her first friend at Hogwarts, or at least, the first person she had met that she haden’t already known. Ellie opened her book to a random page.

"I'm fine with political or social, I really don't care so..." He had also said he didn't care in a way so, they where getting nowhere.

Ellie didn't;t know what it was, the History of Magic classes where so fun as was the homework (and generally easy) but she couldn't seem to get a grasp on the project! There was so many ways to take it too! Just rebellions, the reasons behind the rebellions, the werewolf involvement... and probably more she couldn't grasp her head around! Ellie signed, hoping Mikey had an idea, or they would be stuck, doing nothing.

Mikey sat and listened to Ellie. There was something to it, a tentative sharpness on good intentions. He knew it. He lived within it. He nodded almost imperceptibly when she talked of the frogs once more. "If I have a message for them I will certainly pass it along to you." He said, struggling not to laugh.

For a moment, they did not move. The stack of books between them could have been a wall or a bridge, depending on what was said next. Mikey traced the curve of one page's edge with his thumb and eyed the messy notes from before. They were no longer quite as helpful with someone else interpreting them too. "This is more difficult than I thought it'd be," he said, not raising his head. "Not the history exactly. Just, trying to figure out how to start.”

He flipped a page slowly, reading words that didn't seem to read the way they used to. "Too much," he murmured. "Too much to it. Werewolf mercenaries, betrayals, magical rights, goblin banks, cursed treaties. it's all scrambled up." He glanced up then, his eyes scanning her face. Ellie looked just as bewildered, and somehow that wasn't so bad. At least they were confused together.

After a moment, he pushed one of the books across to her, a thick one called Tensions in Magical Governance: 1600–1700. He thumped the center of it with his finger. "We can choose something. One thing. Read up on it, discuss it. We don't need a plan yet."

He looked at her again. "If we get one right, the others should come easier." Mikey opened the book between them and allowed silence to fill the space. It wasn't unpleasant anymore. Just, contemplative. Like possibly history did not necessarily have to be worked out all at once. Possibly it just needed someone to sit quietly with it long enough to hear.

”If I had a message for them I will certainly pass it along.” Mikey said, looking like he was trying to be serious and not laugh.

“Oh good! ‘Cause it was really a bummer I didn’t get to last time!” Ellie responded jokingly.

Mikey said how difficult this was, finding some place to start and Ellie nodded her head, her slightly faded purple tips of her hair moving up and down.

She looked at the tower of books in front of her and sighed. Mikey mumbled something, something she couldn’t quite catch, something that sounded like ‘Too much’ and a bunch of the things to research about the goblin rebellions. Ellie sighed again. There was a lot of things to research. Between the werewolf involvement, and wands with goblins and treaty’s. It was all so confusing and there was so many ways to take this.

The History classes were one of her favorite things to do. It was rather strange since typically, History was her least favorite class, but not this year. She didn’t know what it was. And checking over all the notes she made, even then she couldn’t find anything! She had payed attention to, so she should have some grasp on what they should do, but she. Had. Nothing!

"We can choose something. One thing. Read up on it, discuss it. We don't need a plan yet.” Mikey said, breaking the soft silence of their confused and stumped mind, “If we get one right, the others should come easier."

“That’s true, but I still don’t know like, should we focus on why they rebelled first and then some other things?” Ellie asked.

He saw her head bobbing up and down with every recitation, and allowed himself a small smile. Not that they were getting anywhere. They weren't. Not really. But because something about the not knowing was beginning to feel. less awful. They weren't stranded by themselves. They were stranded together. When she recited back her confusion, he shifted slightly, as if trying to see the problem from a different perspective. "Right. That would be good. Begin at the beginning." He placed a light finger on the open book between them. "Why they rose up. Not only the big flash points, but the tension that had been building leading up to everything breaking down."

He slowly turned a few pages until he came to a page labeled 'Magical Inequity and the Goblin Question'. He ran his finger over several lines. (Refused wands. Refused equal legal representation. Used in business and finance.) "Sounds like a list of reasons you'd overthrow a person." Mikey glanced up at her then, more introspective. "Perhaps we do it that way. What did the goblins rebel against to start with? And then a few examples.". Choose a couple of moments, a couple of events such as the Ruckford Riots or the Treaty of Galkar, and follow through how the moments progress back into the top reasons. He shrugged a little, as though to say It's not ideal, but it's something.

"Something like… we're not writing the whole history. Just charting it.". Demonstrating how it works. His voice was softer, and he glanced back and forth between the pages of the book and Ellie's face. "I think that's what the Professor wants, though. Not facts. But comprehension." He laid his quill down carefully. "Will you do it in that way? I can do the bullet points and you can go over for the original reasons? Or we trade, if you'd prefer doing the writing half." His own grin came back, lopsided but genuine. "Provided we're not eaten by the pile of books first." He swept his hand over the topmost one for dramatic effect, then winked. "I'm pretty sure that one snarled at me."

"Sounds like a list of reasons you'd overthrow a person." Mikey said turning to face her "Perhaps we do it that way. What did the goblins rebel against to start with? And then a few examples."

"Yeah, that sounds good." Ellie responded since that sounded like a good place to start.

They finally had a base of what to do. The next problem? The goblins rebelled for soo many reasons! Their wands being taken away, differences in beliefs, lack of goblin representation... there was just so much!

Mikey started talking again, breaking her confusing thoughts. Like he had read her mind an decided to help her with the confusing thoughts he said, "Something like… we're not writing the whole history. Just charting it."

Ellie smiled, "Thanks" she said, realizing he wouldn't understand, "That makes sense, there is so many factors in this rebellion, well I guess all rebellions have that since they need to have a reason to rebel. They can't just be like" Ellie makes her voice deeper and pretends to look at a watch, "Hmm... it seems like a good time to have rebellion! Nothing is happening so let's do this!"

She smiled again, hoping that didn't come out wrong. She picked up a book, Wizards and Goblins. She flipped to a random page that mentioned how goblins believed if a crafter makes a object for someone and that someone dies, the item goes back to the crafter. She remember Professor Lennox mentioning something like this. Ellie bookmarked the page.

Mikey chuckled, quiet, quick and short-lived but a chuckle nonetheless at Ellie’s impression of a bored goblin looking at a watch and saying it was rebellion o’clock. He covered his mouth with the back of his hand and shook his head, grinning. “You know,” he murmured, looking towards the librarian’s desk out of habit, “if we get kicked out of the library it’ll be your fault for making me laugh.”

She was funny. Not loud funny but the kind that caught you off guard and made things feel easier. He liked that.

When she opened Wizards and Goblins and flipped to the part about goblin beliefs on ownership and craftsmanship Mikey leaned over the table a little to look at it too. “Right, yeah—I remember that. Professor Lennox got very animated about it. Said something like ‘This is why context matters!’ before waving his quill around like a sword.” Mikey tapped the page. “This is good. This could definitely be one of the points we focus on. Their beliefs on ownership and how that clashed with wizard property laws—it’s a big one.”

He opened his own notebook and started scribbling

The idea wasn’t perfect but he liked how it was shaping up. Better than staring blankly at a mountain of books anyway.

“And I know this isn’t exactly exciting homework,” he added, softer, “but I’m glad we’re doing it together.” He was pretty sure he meant what he said. He just smiled at her and underlined ownership beliefs in his notes before asking, “You want to split these now or read a bit more and see what else pops out?”
