Avis tried to be annoyed that Sabrina was skipping. She tried to be annoyed that Sabrina was copying her, she really did. She wanted it to bother her. And yet it didn't. The most frustration she could gather from it was a good-natured eye roll at the sight. Somehow, Sabrina had managed to pull herself past Avis' mask of stoicism, to the point where she could tease Avis.

That was a sobering thought. Avis didn't like that, she didn't like that someone had found their way past her defenses. Besides her family (and Maria, who was basically family), the last person to do that was Ellie. And that was a scary thought. Avis' smile fell from her face for a moment, and she hesitated. Had she gotten soft? Had she lowered her wall? Was there a chink in her armour? This was a problem that needed to be solved immediatly.

Because she didn't want it to happen again.

As Avis probably should have known, and quickly figured out, the reason she hadn't trusted anyone for the past 3 years was simple. She hadn't known anyone for the last 3 years. But that didn't make it any easier. In Avis' opinion, trust was like a Triceps muscle. You had to exercise it, to make it stronger, but if you were to break a bone, well, that sucks. Its going to be awfully hard to exercise. Avis had been living with a cast for the past 3 years, and maybe it was time to use one of those cool cast saws that can tear plaster but not human skin.

This entire internal battle revealed itself in the entirety of a slightly miffed look on Avis' face, as she walked quicker to keep up with Sabrina.

"Why not? I am quite good at it, and it will come in handy soon" "I am perfectly capable of braiding my own hair." Avis kept her voice light and teasing, but with a slight cold undertone. She reached into her satchel yet again, managing to pull out another twelve hair ties. She looked in her satchel for a moment. Did she have her entire hair kit in there? (Her "hair kit" per say, consisted of about twenty hair ties. That's it) She shook it of and dumped nine of them back, before quickly twisting her ponytail into two braids, combining them with her final hair tie at the bottom.

As the two reached the lake, Avis took a quick glance around for any prefect or professor who might be lurking, before shrugging off her satchel and taking in a deep breath of fresh air...and then immediatly coughing as the bitter winter bit at the back of her throat. "Have you ever done a polar bear plunge?"

As per the norm, Sabrina was blisfully oblivious to the inner struggle the other girl was going through, failing to even notice the change in her expression, her attention on the body of water slowly coming into view, unraveling before them. She was progressively, and frankly unconciousy, speeding up, feeling her excitement built withhin her.

The surface of the dark liquid was mostly calm, only small waves created from the wind aroudn them. A thin layer of ice was beggining the form at the edges, not strong enough to hold against the slight movement of the water below, sinking in broken pieces, probably not even making it to the bottom before it thawed. It was utterly beautiful, at least in Sabrina's opinion, and she could wait to dive into it.

She only looked away from it once she heard Avis speak again - or rather respond to her question. Even with her unmatched talent to miss any and all social cues, Sabrina sensed the slight tension in Avis' seamingly light words. Watching as the girl twisted her hair into two braids - which must've been quite difficult given the whistling wind and the disheveled state it must've brought her hair to - she decided not to question it any further. Teasing and proding was all fine and good in her book, but only to a certain point where all parties involved remained fairly comfortable with it. She was emotionally competant enough to know that going deeper on this subject would definitely cross said point. (Although, still being a kid, she took the rejection and - to her - display of distrust a little personally. Sure, they weren't friends, per say, and Sabrina only trusted Avis with light jokes and not throwing her under the bus, but it still stung.)

So she just nodded, swiveling her head to look back at the lake that was now mere feets away from them. Setting down her own bag, she relocated the robe that was previously swung over it to lay ontop of it, if the need for it arised. Looking up at the other girl - who seemed to be choking on fresh air out of all things - her eyes skimmed over the cloak she was wearing, guessing it would be enchanted to keep her warm, too.

"The wamrth enchantments should work even in water" she informed the other girl, already in a process of unzipping her own - not enchanted - cloak, "I brought my robe of warmth, incase your cloak wasn't enchanted. Plus a spare towel" she added, just in case.

"Have you ever done a polar bear plunge?"

Sabrina hummed, brows furrowing in concentration, searching her mind for a definition of a polar bear plunge, not really succesful at that. The word plunge suggested it might be something similiar to cannonball, but that was as much as Sabrina dared to guess.

"No..? I don't think I even know what that is" she answered, almost a questioning tone to it as she waited for the other girl to elaborate. "If it includes jumping into the water, I should warn you that it's not actually that deep at the edges, only going up to my elbows or so" she continued, not bothering to explain how she knew that as she put her cloak down on her bag, working her way through taking off her robes next.

Avis watched Sabrina very closely as she put her bags down. Her mind was whirling with the seeds of an idea. She calculated her chances and pretended like she could figure out the angles. She pulled off her cloaks, giving an involuntary shiver as the bitter wind flew through her light tunic. She moved her stuff next to Sabrina, keeping Sabrina between her and the water at all times. After all, if she had come up with the idea, no reason Sabrina couldn't have as well.

"The polar bear plunge is a tradition for some people on New Years, where they run into a freezing cold lake. I always thought it was sort of stupid." Avis shrugged, and a smile returned to her face. "But here we are, I guess. Idiots of the century."

The lake was still. Very still, the only movements small waves fighting against the ice that was threatening to form. Perfect for making ripples. Perfect for making a splash. Avis smirked, and shot a mischievous grin toward Sabrina, waiting. Once Sabrina finished taking off her robes, Avis walked toward the water and Sabrina followed. Avis kept herself out of arms reach until they reached the edge,
when she suddenly shot in a burst of energy, grinning at Sabrina as she tried to pull the girl into the water. She got a good grip on Sabina's arm, but clearly, Avis needed to work out as the girl didn't even budge. "Well that didn't work." She let go of Sabrina and shrugged, the slightest hint of red appearing on her cheeks, whether from embarrassment or the cold. Definitely from the cold. Oh well.

Sabrina loved water. So much so, that a few year ago she had a full on tantrum - not a usual thing for her to do even back then - when her parents forbit her from going to the beach in the middle of winter, sulking in her room for a good week after that - also not a commen thing for her to do. After a long talk with her parents that mostly consisted of how to express our emotions without accidentally setting a rug on fire and hypothermia is a real thing, apology and a 'love-hug' (a thing her and her parents did after an argument, to show that despite the situation, they still loved each other) Sarbina got a a shorty neoprene suit under the tree that Christmas.

It was a bit bigger on her then, meaning it fit her now just fine. She wore it instead of swimsuit today, which proved to be a big uncomfort in classes, but a huge benefit now. Avis, unfortunately wasn't so prepared, shivering in the cold air. Sabrina thought of offering her the robe of warmth again, but ultimitely decided against it. She informed Avis that it was an option, and if she decided to not choose it, it was her thing. As the other explained the polar bear plunge to her, Sabrina gave a scoff and a good-natured eye-roll.

"Oi! Noone expects anyone to swim in this weather, because it's so stupid. That makes the plan genius. And as we are the ones performing it, I'd argue that we are, at the very least, criminally genius idiots of the century."

With her robes, shoes and chullo placed over her shoulder bag, Sabrina followed the other girl to the water. Shifting from one foot to the other - surprise, surprise, the ground was freezing as well - Sabrina stared at the yet unbroken surface laying infront of her. She was just thinking about how to best get in when she felt a sudden warm touch over her bare forearm, followed by a yank. Yelping, she stumbled to a side, eyes wide from shock. It took her a few seconds to fully comprehend what had happened, seeing the light dusting of red over Avis' cheeks and- she burst out laughting, almost falling over into the Lake herself as she did.

"No, that bloody didn't" she answered, wiping imaginary tears from her eyes as she took a few steps back, giving herself a running start as she went for the other girl, arms wrapped around her waist as she took advantage of the speed, slambing them both into the lake.

"No, that bloody didn't" Avis smiled a quiet smile, entertained but not hysterical as Sabrina was. She felt her cheeks begin to blush, and she turned towards the lake, jokingly sighing. That was probably the worst idea she possibly could have had, and she chided herself for it moments later, and the wind was knocked out of her and the lake came up to meet her. Avis was completely unprepared, and Sabrina's speed send to two girls several feet into the lake.

She breathed out a gasp as the cold water enveloped her, and considering the wind had already been knocked out of her, she didn't have much air left. Scrambling, she found a solid surface to stand on to catch her breath...and immediatly pulled her feet up, treading water. There is a specific texture, of a lake bottom, that is sort of squishy and alive and seaweedy, and altogether disgusting. Combined with it being winter, it was a cold glop of goop that Avis was not standing in.

She had to curl her legs up in the shallow water in order to tread water, but it was better than touching the bottom. She sagged a little bit as she lifted a hand to pull a couple of stray hairs out of her face and had to quickly pull herself back up. Her teeth began to chatter as the cold air hit her wet face, and with a frown, she realized that it would probably actually be better under the water. Which worked out fine for her plan, anyway. She slipped under the water and swam around Sabrina, eventually grabbing the girl's ankle and yanking.

The harsh bite of cold was something Sabrina had anticipated, but definitely not prepared herself enough for. The familiar shiver that came after cold water meeting her bare skin ran through her body, the feeling of thousands small needles poking into her starting up in several places, the tips of her fingers tingling already. Thankfully, she was skilled and prepared enough to not swallow a mouth-full of water, emerging almost immediatlty.

Her cheeks flush from the cold, she laughed, the sound tinged with a bit of coughing and the sound of her teeth that were just starting to clatter. At this point, the water was just deep enough for her to comfortably thread water, without digging her toes into the muddy substance hiding beneath the surface - it had definitely surprised her the first time she stepped into the lake, back in October, but she has gotten fairly used to it over the past few months, and even began to appriciate it, in a strange sense. It was definitely far from the soft sand of a beach or smooth tiles from public-pools she was used to, but she didn't mind. A bit of discomfort could make one feel more alive, in Sabrina's opinion.

When Avis' head broke the surface, Sabrina turned to direct her smile at her. She opened her mouth, about to take a jab at the girl when her co-author dived back into the water. As it was dark and clouded, Sabrina couldn't make out the other girl's movement. And frankly, she should've expected the fingers that curled around her ankle, should've known this was coming, and to some degree she did, resisting the yelp that was clawing it's way up her throat, but not the reflexive kick of her trapped leg.

Logically, Sabrina kicked as Avis grabbed her ankle. It was reflexive, and Avis really should have seen it coming. But it was cold, and somewhere there is probably a study that proves that being in cold temperatures numbs the brain's ability to think. Avis' thinking skills were slightly worse than normal, and her first thought was to block Sabrina's kick with her other hand. Which wasn't a great idea, and in any other scenario it would have hurt quite a bit, but seeing as her hand was already going numb from the cold, she barely even registered the hit, only feeling a slight ram into her hand. Which made her wonder, if neither person feels the hit, is it really a hit? Yes, yes it is. Or maybe it was a fish.

Gah. Avis pulled her grip off Sabrina's ankle in her jerk backward. Avis did not like fish. Or frog. Or cats or dogs or bird or snakes. Or any animal, really. The only animal she was even slightly okay with was humans. Because in Avis' opinion, yes, humans were animals. Some were even more animal-like than animals. (Because really, if you take a teenage boy against a crow in a battle of wits, who would win? The crow.)

It was strange. Avis was in the middle of a freezing cold lake, and she was worried about the fish. Clearly, her brain was not at full capacity. She felt a tug at her arm and before she could yank her arm away she was above the water. She sucked in a cold breath.

"You okay?" Avis drew out her response, questioningly. "Yeeeaaahhh?" Why wouldn't she be? Well, besides the cold that was slowly creeping up her legs. Her teeth chattered, louder than Sabrina's (take that, ha), and her lips were beginning to gain a slight bluish tint.

"Good," Sabrina said, bringing her hand up to cover her mouth with the back of it, coughting. "Glad I didn't kick your teeth in or something," she joked, corners of her lips tugging up into a - a bit uneven, due to her lips trembling - smile again. The water was colder than she had reckoned with. Her neoprene suit was keeping her warm at all the important places - which, according to her mum, were liver, chest and lower back - but Avis didn't have that luxury, her lips turning blue and teeth chattering.

She frowned at the water, worrying her lip as she thought. The rule was against swimming in the lake and - okay, by that they definitely meant entering the water in general, but still. It wouldn't feel done if they were just to stay in a spot for a bit before getting out. Plus, movement would surely warm them up. So, she let her arms spread just under the surface, bringing them back together in front of herself, putting herself into motion, pushing back against the water.

"Come on," she tilted her head to a side, turning into the direction of the motion, her back now towards Avis. "I can feel myself turning into an icicle. First one to touch the bark of that tree - " she brought her arm up from the water with a splash, pointing at a willow about 20 metres away from them "- gets to call the other by a nickname of their choice for a month. Yeah?"

She waited for a bit longer, so Avis had the time to align with her and get ready. Sabrina herself took a few deep breaths, calming herself, letting her body sink a little deeper. Closing her eyes, she let herself just feel the sensetion of water flowing through her spread fingers and forming around her legs. Oh, she loved this. Opening her eyes, she smiled, looking up ahead.

"Three, two, one, go!," she counted down, inhaling through her nose as she fully dove into the water.

"I can feel myself turning into an icicle." She could feel herself turning into an icicle? She could feel herself turning into an icicle? Sabrina, the girl who was basically wearing a wet suit? Seriously? Avis was wearing a tunic and leggings, not a suit that it literally meant to keep one warm. She didn't really have time to argue the point, however, as Sabrina pointed toward a willow tree a ways away. (Avis was never good at distances)

"- gets to call the other by a nickname of their choice for a month. Yeah?" That was slightly unfair, considering Avis could barely feel her legs. But she wasn't a whiner, so she gave a shivering nod and treaded faster, hoping to send some blood down her veins. "Hokay"

As Sabrina counted down, the two girls took off. Sabrina was clearly the faster swimmer, but Avis was motivated. After all, the sooner they finished the sooner they could get out of the water. Avis didn't exactly front stroke, more like a sloppy repetitive dive mermaid thing - an insult to whatever mermaids may have lurked in the waters - but it worked, and Avis touched the tree with a final spraying dive. The concurrent splash, however, brought up a thin layer of water between the girls, temporarily getting water in Avis' eyes. As a result, she had absolutely no idea who won the race. She grabbed the tree for support, her words coming as rapid as her shivering, pausing for breath. "Dijyouseewhowon?...Otherwisewe...mighthave torace...back."

Once in motion, Sabrina felt instantly better. Although she could tell that her style was a bit less graceful and precise than normal, her limbs stiff. At the end, she forgot to keep the technique in mind all together - yes, moving helped, but not as much as she would've hoped it to. It was like a momenteral relief, while the bigger problem - growing cold and numbness through her whole body - kept on getting worse and worse. (If she would've been older, she could've seen a darkly amusing connection between it and substance abuse)

Reaching her goal, she slammed her hand against the trunk, feeling a dull tingle in her palm from too much force. Gasping for air - which shouldn't, and usually didn't happen, after swimming - she looked up, observing that, appearently, they had reached the goal at proximately same time. Avis' words were basically unintelligible, which Sabrina had a sympathy for, nodding back.

"Yeah, eh-" she looked back at where their things laid. Normally, she wouldn't mind not racing back but- well, they needed out of the water asap. Swimming would get them to their stuff quicker. Plus, she knew Avis was competative, and hoped the race would motivate her even more - although, judging from how much she was shivering, the girl hardly needed any further motivation. "'nother round s-s-sounds g-..great" she nodded again, sviwelling to have her back to the willow.

"Three," she braced her feet against the bank, hardly feeling the texture of it, ready to boost herself, "two," one hand still supporting her against the tree, she stretched the one out in front of herself, seeing the slight trember of it "one," Taking a deep breath, a freezing shiver ran down her spine "go!"
