Day of Tolerance
November 16th 2024- Day of ToleranceThe International Day of Tolerance: a day Sage had only celebrated a few times before back home, but held dear to her heart. Now, as the new prefect, she was bringing her celebration to Hogwarts to share with her peers. Everywhere could always use a bit more tolerance in her opinion.
She waited in the study room for those participating to join her. A bulletin board had been propped up against the back wall for students to pin their reflection on. A jar of quills and parchment had been set on a table to be used- and returned- to write reflections. A small section of the room had been cleared except for a circle of chairs for students to sit, chat, and get to know one another a bit more should they choose, though you were welcome to come in write a short note and leave. Those who wanted to stay and celebrate longer were welcome to do so as well.
Sage would remain at the front of the room greeting those who arrived and writing her own notes on the Day of Tolerance. She was in earshot of anyone with the nerve to say anything horrible, and they could guarantee she'd show them the door- and most likely a detention too.
So, come one come all, to the Hogwarts celebration of the International Day of Tolerance!

Day of Tolerance
Tolerance Day
To be accepted, and to be wanted,
the difference so far, so far from the same.
For one day is being allowed, your presence alright,
the other to be greeted, happily embraced when you’re there.
People accept others because they know it’s the right thing to do,
yet not because they really want to.
They do not want to because they believe something is wrong,
and that something is called a difference.
Thinking badly of someone because their every aspect doesn’t align with your own,
never stopping to think of them as a person.
To us, separating ourselves from someone different seems just fine,
to them they feel like there is something wrong, like they don’t belong.
We must learn to not just accept others, but to want them,
to invite them, and to need them.
We must learn to see people for themselves,
and not the surface area we do not like.
In our world, our world of eight billion people, the diversity is rich,
similarities are common yet scarce.
Our differences and our diversity are what make us us,
they should bring us together, not tear us apart.
A day of tolerance is not one day to allow those who are different in,
but a day to remind us that everyday we should cherish those differences.
It is a great privilege to have the diversity we have,
and it should be celebrated forever.
We don’t just have one day of tolerance for those people who are not “right”,
we have three hundred and sixty five days a year for it.
On the date the sixteenth of November,
we remember.
We remember how every single one of us has our purpose,
how we all matter just the same, whether anyone can see it or not.
People should not need to try and fit in to our society,
but should be let in for who they are.
Who a person is is not just who they were born as,
but who they have and will grow up to be.
In our wonderful world filled with wonderful people,
we need our diversity to make everything work.
Differences are what make our lives better, more unique.
We rely on others and others rely on us, everything comes back to everyone.
Everybody, take a break from the blindness,
not being able to see how badly it affects everything and everyone when we are intolerant.
How it changes our worldview and makes us look even worse than we think,
even worse than we want.
Use this day as a reminder of how important our diversity is,
how much we all need to love each other, how easy it is to live and be loved.

A Day of Tolerance Essay by Maisie Gemmell
The truth was The International Day of Tolerance was a misnomer. It wasn't that the day or message wasn't important—it absolutely was. It was just that we could do better. Tolerance is exactly that—tolerating something or someone. That doesn't mean that you like or appreciate them, quite the reverse, in fact.
What we really need is a Day of Celebration. That is, a time to celebrate—not just tolerate—the differences between cultures, societies, and peoples. It is through diversity that we get new ideas and learn new skills. It is in diversity that we are stronger as humankind. There is plenty of muggle research to back this claim up, including studies by psychologists and sociologists. Diversity increases productivity and financial gains. But perhaps most importantly, it increases happiness.
The Day of Celebration would go one step forward, however. Because beyond just ensuring that everyone has a seat at the table, it important to actually celebrate. We must share our ideas and our vision and celebrate what we have accomplished. There is a distinct intentionality and deliberate gratitude involved here. For more information on these behaviors and tactics, I strongly recommend following the research of muggle scientists in Positive Organizational Psychology.
It is worth noting that the celebration must be authentic. If everyone is not bringing their authentic selves and thoughts to the event, there is not much point. In order to do this, we must create systems and norms that all everyone to be feel truly comfortable bringing their whole, messy selves and being open to hearing the voices of others. Norms are truly key so that we can establish a safe space based on respect and inclusion. Without this establishment of trust, everything else falls apart.
So, the International Day of Tolerance is an important once, but it's also just the tip of the iceberg of how we should work together and respect one another across the globe, in both muggle and wizarding communities. Because to have tolerance, you must first have trust and compassion. And from that tolerance and grow acceptance and understanding. And from those seeds, if we're lucky, can grow joy. And that is really what we all need: a world that is more tolerant, more compassionate, more understanding, more accepting, more vulnerable, more inclusive, and, last but never least, more joyful. In short, we need to celebrate one another: our differences, our similarities and everything in between.

Day of Tolerance
Driving forth with a heart of gold,
Fighting off the bitter cold,
Of eyes that stare with confusion or hate,
Daggers bared, but with love we abate,
The cruelty of those shadowy fiends,
Hidden plots, hidden schemes.
A body trained to bear it all,
Physically strong, not likely to fall,
Fighting away the shards of glass,
Happily holding the hands of a lass,
Lesbian pride, starting so young,
My own age when I first knew I was wrong.
Or so I was taught by society to feel,
My love, my heart, told it wasn't real,
At age of ten I knew who I was,
And yet at 12, my first heartbreak, ripped apart by hateful jaws.
Of grandparents, spurned, blinded by creed,
Thinking my sexuality some kind of greed,
A sin, I was told, or tall tale of lust,
A child's imagination, not true, not just!
Told constantly I just wasn't right!
Every day, every night, unless hidden at gym, always another fight.
And so I grew stronger, physically at least,
Some in my school teased, called me a beast,
But one thing I am glad for, my parents stood tall,
Protected me, shielding me, taking care for the small,
But poor little child who was told such a wrong,
Just because she fell for a girl, who sung for her in song.
Together tears we did shed,
But now with that same girl, together I am wed,
And those who hated that child, well they are thoroughly dead.
After a few months of this, never did they speak again,
All because she did not like men,
Because she knew how her heart did sway,
This little girl who knew she was gay,
Still even now she wishes that their love had stayed.
That they had a chance to resolve before meeting the grave.
Alas I need to turn from my own life to the page,
Stop these tears on my face, for it's Accalia's story now set to stage,
Turned from a life where I was done such wrong.
And hoping her life will not meet the same prong.
As equally fit, but far more joyous a tale,
She meets new friends, with strength to prevail,
Hoping she finds a heart to call her own,
A fantastic adventure as her own life is grown.
A world of magic, a world of laughter,
For my dear digital self, this is what I am after,
Smiles abound, my own little self,
Pages to write, of this impish little elf.
A family still whole, challenges to meet,
Beating her own tune with her two feet,

Day of Tolerance
Emiline heard of a new errand about the day of tolerance. She hurried towards the study room in which this errands was taking place. As she entered she nodded towards Sage Willows and grabbed a piece of parchment. She sat there for a moment thinking before she suddenly started scribbling down the words spilling from her mind.
Emiline finished off her poem hoping it fitted the brief. It kinda did, showing how she had to be tolerant of others when she got angry and calm herself down so she wouldn't hurt other students' feelings. She walked up to the bulletin board and pinned her anger poem up on it. She waved towards Sage and then left the study room.Words soaring,
Thoughts tumbling.
Lessons boring,
students bumbling.
Anger rising,
counting down

Words said,
but not meant.
Caught up in a moment trying to vent.
Headache roaring,
tears falling.
Emotions high
now time to sigh.

Tolerance
Tolerate; yet we debate the best way to say
how to do it.
Hate.
Love to spread it.
‘till it hits us,
what we’ve done.
Others never even know, understand or comprehend
their actions
or peoples reactions.
So how do we do it?
Tolerate.
Stop the spread, the disease, that eats our society away.
Our homes, lives, families, enemies, friends; ourselves.
Taken away.
Its not hopeless.
Stop.
Stop hating and fighting and debating
20 different ways to say – be decent.
Behave.
If I can save, one person, one moment, one day
from being ruined through my actions
Then I will be the one who understands,
who knows and comprehends,
What I’ve done and peoples reactions,
Knowing I’m doing what’s right will give me satisfaction.
If I understand to tolerate maybe I can stop the hate that swallows us up
That eats our society,
That melts my soul,
Or someone’s family.
And if I can’t then I can inside me.
You and I Can be tolerant.
I can’t love everyone or everything,
And that’s okay,
but not loving, compared to hating or saying,
You’re wrong and I’m right,
Your life is my fight.

From the truth,
if it hurts,

Hate, love, tolerance,
Which do we choose?
Hate is horrible,
I'd rather die
Than hate anyone.
Love is beautiful,
I'd sooner love
With all my heart
Than anything else.
There's a middle,
Not just love and hate.
We can tolerate.
It's hard, but possible too.
If you're in an argument,
Just don't take sides,
It'd be best to stay neutral.
Others might make you choose,
But if you do,
you might have enemies.
No one wants hate,
Some can't love,
The best we have,
Is good old tolerance.

Day of Tolerance
Poppy was disappointed when she entered the room to see lots of nice poems, and even an essay, but no one who stayed beyond the note they put on the board.
"What? Is a bunch of scribblings on parchment which could've been written out of a want for rewards without any soul going to change anything? Does anyone even remember the argument that happened because of my head of house revealing he was a werewolf? Do we really think this maybe half hearted bandage is going to do anything?" Was all that went through her head. Poppy couldn't care less if she got a detention from what she was about to do, it was the truth, cutesy notes did nothing. It was a nice gesture, but that's it.
The first year Ravenclaw scribbled on parchment, in handwriting vastly different to her own: How about instead of filling up the board we have a real conversation? Stop putting bandages on the generational problem and start fixing it through conversations of each other's struggles? Otherwise how do you expect anything to get done, ever.
Poppy held the note in her hand, she could do it. She could pin the note to the board, and challenge others to start the conversation. She could be the change which she wanted to see happen before her. Then she thought about the consequences, sure she didn't care about the detention, but her parents would. It would be a dishonor to get a detention for calling a tolerence celebration not progressive enough. She was a pureblood, and there were duties that came with that.
She crumbled her note and instead wrote yet another poem to add to the collection. This was the safest way. She could say it was just for the rewards if she needed justification, and she could gain respect among those who assumed it was out of the goodness of her heart.

Poppy pinned the much neater, much more kind to her reputation note on the board. She realized how halfbreeds were left out, but she didn't care too much. Those turned against their will deserved sympathy, and in her mind weren't half breeds but those with unfortunate conditions. Other halfbreeds were a grey area for Poppy. She was raised to see problems with them, but she's never actually meet one herself so could she hold an opinion?It's easy, you know.
You don't need to like them.
You can hold whatever belief in your heart.
But everyone is human.
Everyone deserves to be treated as a human.
Keep your hate in your back pocket, and remember
you never know someone until you've lived a day of their life.

Mylo had tolerance for quite a few things, loud noises, crowded spaces, bad grades, it didn't mean they liked them but they could live with them happening for periods of time. Some people unfortunately didn't have tolerance for certain things, and they had to make it everybody's problem.
Mylo had been on the receiving end of this a few times when they were younger, children who didn't like the way they'd flap their arms when very exited about things, or would be very quite at other points and wouldn't talk if they didn't want to. It had led to a few unpleasant experiences, which had led to them overthinking everything they thought, said and did.
They were very lucky though to have never had intolerance about their gender, his parents always having supported them, their sister not really having any other thoughts besides 'they're my sibling, and that's different how?' But they knew about people who weren't so lucky. And that was something Mylo couldn't tolerate. The way people would make their hate and dislike a problem for the person they felt it towards.
That's why when he saw the board in the study room, filled with poems and songs about tolerance Mylo thought about maybe adding their own letter to it.
Sitting down he put all their study things on the table in front of them, and took out a quill and some parchment and started writing their own letter, the things Mylo would say could not be contained within rhymes or carefully crafted sentences. They were meant to be put down without to much thought, the meaning behind them being put their with all their feelings put behind them. It was therapeutic actually, to put some of the things they though and would not dare say out loud for fear of... what.
What have you experienced but acceptance and love here. You haven't had anything but good experiences here a little voice whispered in their head. And they were right, so far Mylo had not had anything that you could see as a bad experience, but they had read about it at home. The problems that people who were the same and different to them faced, the hate and prejudice. Because of who they loved, or what they looked like, or how they felt. And it wasn't fair. Just because Mylo hadn't experienced it first hand didn't mean it didn't exist.
So just because he hadn't had bad experiences here at school, didn't mean that others hadn't and that they never would. So they ignored the voice, and continued writing because it was better than keeping it all inside.
It was a mess, thoughts put directly to paper without much extra thought behind them. Words and sentences crossed out and rewritten, words misspelled and changed. But it was true, and it was not something they were going to put up. This had just been for them, for their own peace of mind. Others would come around and put up their own letters, and rhymes and words of tolerance and acceptance. But the words Mylo had written would not be a part of those.
Tucking the words behind layers of other words, less personal, less messy and neater, they put it in one of their notebooks. Wondering what they'd do with it now, knowing that they didn't really have to do anything with it.
It could just exist. Just like everyone else.

Day of Tolerance
Day of Tolerance?
It was the first time Novalie had heard of such a thing.
A whole day just to tolerate people? Shouldn’t that be, like, an everyday thing? Then again, she'd also heard of odd holidays like Tortilla Chip Day and Mail Order Catalog Day, so maybe Tolerance Day was just another excuse to celebrate.
After learning about it firsthand from a fellow Ravenclaw, Novalie decided to check out the Study Room, where, apparently, something Tolerance-related was happening.
On her way, however, she spotted her two best friends - Eric and Oliver!
The redhead noticed that they seemed to be chatting about DADA homework and she simply couldn’t let that stand. To their luck, Novalie was now here to free them. After all, who would waste time with homework on such a momentous holiday?
With a grin, Novalie snuck up behind them, suddenly wrapping her left arm around Eric’s and her right arm around Oliver’s, wedging herself happily between them.
“No time to waste!”, she announced, without any greetings as per usual and started dragging them down the corridor, “We’re going to Tolerance Day!”
Truthfully, the girl had no idea what to expect, but her curiosity pulled her forward until they arrived at the Study Room. Inside, she saw a bulletin board set up with scattered notes pinned to it. Releasing the boys from her grasp, Novalie sighed. This did not look like a celebration.
“Well, since we’re here, we might as well show everyone how tolerant we are, right?”, she said with a bright grin.
Grabbing a piece of parchment and a quill, she plopped down at a nearby table, tapping the quill thoughtfully against her cheek.
Now...what exactly was she tolerating?
“Hmmm…”
It was a tough question, really. In her world, growing up in a poor but diverse, multicultural community, she’d never herself faced the idea of judging or 'tolerating' people. She hadn’t even been directly aware of the hardships faced by Muggle-borns and Half-breeds in the magical world.
So, what did she tolerate?
Then, a spark of inspiration struck her!
She began to write, blissfully unaware that her idea of 'tolerance' might not exactly match the day’s intended theme...Dear Mister Soloman Lear,
I am tolerating your school and the many subjects you make students learn.
Honestly, I think this school is much more fun than the one back home! Now I get to use magic and people here don’t seem bothered by my changes in appearance, which I’m really grateful for. Someday, I'll try to look just like you with my ability!
I also try my best to tolerate homework and school rules - though, sometimes, I just can’t bring myself to do that. It’s not that I don’t respect them, it’s just that they’re... well, a bit dull, wouldn’t you agree?
I believe a lot of students feel the same way. My best friends, Eric Kim (a Gryffindor who’s so rich my friends back home would think he stole everything he owns) and Oliver Armani (possibly the strongest Slytherin here - have you seen him demolish things with a hammer?) would both agree that a little less homework and fewer rules would be a big improvement.
I truly think that if you lightened up on the homework load and, like, relaxed some rules, it’d be a lot easier for us to tolerate them.
