Fearghal…was lost. But you wouldn’t know that from looking at him. He strolled down the second floor corridor with the utmost confidence, his head held high and a curious expression on his face as he examined the architecture and the portraits lining the walls. Not terrible artistry…and admittedly, the majority of paintings at his family home back in Waterville didn’t move. If he was going to be lost, he may as well explore a little bit.

He sighed gently, folding his arms across his chest as he went. It had been a few days since the sorting ceremony and he still didn’t feel fully settled in at Hogwarts. Classes, while Fearghal didn’t find the content all that difficult, were different than he was used to. He was accustomed to a private tutor guiding him through lessons: personalized attention and shorter class sessions since they ended once he had finished with them. But here, lectures droned on and on, and the other students in the class were horribly distracting with their coughing and note passing and general irritating behavior.

And the dormitory was more of the same. Yes, the bed was plenty comfortable, but the sounds of other 11-year-old boys trying to sleep made it difficult for Fearghal himself to rest. He briefly rubbed his eyes as he continued down the corridor, wondering how hard it would be to request a private room. After all, this would be his home for the next seven years, and he didn’t plan on spending the entirety of it sleep-deprived and annoyed.

"i'm changing, i'm changing. kick down that door." river rushing, the crane wives.

Meanwhile, Marco loved to explore.

The boy had dedicated most of his time in his early days of Hogwarts to getting used to the books at his disposal. Now, he had gotten used to the schedule of his classes. He could finally allow his brain some time to relax, and get used to the surroundings of his campus. Of course, he was primarily used to the immediate surroundings of the Ravenclaw area. In addition, all of the areas around his classes. But not yet had Marco truly wandered around the campus he had. The possibilities were endless, from what he was told. Particularly in a castle where everything was magically changing. So, since he had some free time, Marco was walking around! He was planning on heading to the Astrology Tower first. He was curious on the view! Heights didn't freak him out much, at least not as much as the dark did. But alas, that was for another monologue.

Anyways, he continued down the corridors. He twisted some of his hair between his fingers, a bit of a habit. He didn't mind indulging in his habits to keep his hands busy when he was alone, he didn't want people to think he was a nervous person. He wasn't, really. Just a bit restless. But habits like this usually exuded some sort of nervous behavior. Social anxiety, perhaps. Marco had none of that! As far as he was aware. Who knows, he was eleven. Approaching the boy, Marco glanced up to see someone he didn't recognize. From the robes, he guessed Gryffindor. Would he say hi? He didn't really feel a need to. They were both going their own ways to the corridors. Though he remembered that he didn't particularly remember the way to the Astrology Tower.

Deciding to approach the boy, Marco clearly hadn't read any emotional indication that Fearghal did not want to be bothered, so he walked up. "Hello." As usual, his posture was perfect and he made some sort of attempt at eye contact, though he really just looked between his eyes. "Sorry to bother you, do you know the direction to the Astrology Tower? Still getting used to this place." He managed a short, shy smile.

Fearghal turned his head at the sound of the voice, raising a hand to push up his glasses before they slipped off his nose. "The Astronomy Tower? Of course I know where it is. This way" He didn't actually know where it was, of course, but how hard could it be to find? If the other boy had come here, this must be the general vicinity of it, and if it was a tower, it had to be up. That was more than enough to go on.

He strode confidently down the corridor, assuming the other boy was following him. "Are you a first year as well?" he asked. "Ravenclaw by the looks of it, yes?" This was the first person he'd had a real conversation with since arriving at Hogwarts. Fearghal wasn't often in the position of having to make friends, but that could just be added to the entire list of new experiences the start of his educational journey had brought him.

The young Gryffindor did his best not to show the nervousness bubbling just under the surface as they walked. It helped that he had charged ahead so this newcomer couldn't see the look on his face. Not until he'd had time to get his facial expressions under control enough to look entirely unbothered, that is.

Of course, Marco had no reason to not believe Fearghal. He seemed like such a kind and honest fellow first year! He was a bit comforted by this boy's confidence in knowing where he was going. Marco still felt like he was learning the ways of the castle. But at least someone knew where they were going. He didn't really want to ask a teacher, because he didn't want them to think he wasn't self-sufficient. It was important to Marco that his teachers thought well of him. With good grades, a good attitude, the works. Well, it was important to Marco, and it was more important to his family. And his family being happy was important to Marco. It was a full cycle! So fun.

Anyways, he followed the stranger. Marco put his hands back into his cloak pockets, looking at the walls and statues before Fearghal spoke up again. "Oh. Yes, I'm in Ravenclaw. And you're in Gyriffindor?" This would now be the second one he had met from Gryffindor, the first being Delaney. Who he described as... Abrasive. Much different than he was. Though he assumed all of the different houses had their little personality bubbles. Of course, Ravenclaw had the braniacs. He knew that even before he had come to Hogwarts. Marco had hoped to be placed there, he knew he needed to be pushed academically, and Ravenclaw was likely the place to do it. Turning to the back of Fearghal's head, he spoke up once more. "What's your name? Are you also a first year?" He had many questions, apparently.

"Yes, I'm in Gryffindor," he nodded. "Can't say I agree with the Sorting Hat's decision, but it is what it is, I suppose." His Irish accent was very strong, and he spoke with a slight lisp, but most of what he said was easy to understand. With the family he had come from, precise speech was an important skill to possess.

"I'm Fearghal. Fearghal Akehurst. You may have heard of my family. We're purebloods," the first year spoke with his chin held high. "It's good to really meet someone in the same year as me. I haven't really spoken to any of the other Gryffindors yet. Too busy with classwork and making sure I'm in the right place at the right time. This place can be a maze if you're not careful." Finding an archway that led to a staircase, Fearghal began ascending, still assuming Marco was behind him.

He paused for a moment and turned to really look at the boy, almost scanning him with his eyes. If Fearghal was going to make friends here, he needed to be sure that they were the right ones. Or...were they even on a path to becoming friends? Perhaps he was jumping the gun a bit. After all, they didn't even know anything about each other yet. "But I've just realized that you haven't told me your name yet. How rude of me."

At Fearghal’s comment, Marco rose an eyebrow since he wasn’t looking at him. Could it be possible for the Sorting Hat to be wrong? Marco had never heard of such a thing. It read you as a person, with magic. Logically, it could not be wrong. It wasn’t possible. Surely this would have been brought up in the many years of its existence. Another thing seemed to be that Gryffindors were rumored to be headstrong people. In the brief interaction they had, Marco could guess that Fearghal fit that description quite well. Of course, he would not say this to him. That would be rude. Marco fit his own house very well, at least.

Akehurst…” He trailed off, trying to remember the name. There were so many families that his parents spoke to. So. Many. Rarely were he or his brother filled in on the grownup chat. He focused on making friends with the muggle children before he went to Hogwarts. “Uh, no, I haven’t. But I’m not particularly involved in the families my parents speak with, they’re not as interested in that.” He explained with a shrug. “It’s easy to keep busy here, particularly when you’re first starting out. There’s just so much to do.”

Marco Rinaldi. My family are also pure bloods.” He clarified, though didn’t know how super important that’d be. He assumed some people cared, Marco didn’t really. He knew it was good to know the other pureblood families.

"Really? My family's always going out to dinner parties and traveling to visit family friends that we haven't seen in a while. That's odd that your family doesn't do that much, especially if you're pureblood as well." Fearghal couldn't imagine a life without all the traveling and socializing. While at home, the young Akehurst tended to assume that something or other was always going on. It was more of a rare occurrence to stay in for the night.

"Hmm, Rinaldi? Honestly, we might have met before and just don't remember it. Wouldn't that be funny?" It was nearly impossible to remember every name and face from every trip or party. He was very familiar with those who frequented events as much as his family, but people who popped in and out didn't tend to stick in his mind.

Fearghal looked uncomfortable for a moment, like he was trying to figure something out. Then, he reached into his pocket and pulled out a handkerchief. The first year extended an arm toward Marco, the handkerchief covering his hand as he went in for a handshake. Even though Marco seemed like a decent enough guy, Fearghal wasn't going to risk getting those germs all over him."It's good to really meet you, though, whether or not we've come across each other in the past."

"My parents are less interested in that sort of thing, they're busy with their work." He offered, shrugging. "But they still do. Just not more then they need to." He wasn't very involved in whatever his parents did. Again, he and his brother were young, and there were obvious reasons why they didn't do business with their parents. They were their children, not business partners. And it's not like Marco asked, and even if he did, his parents would likely not talk to him about it. Regardless, the point was, he was very behind on the pureblood families. He did not recognize Fearghal's last name, though perhaps he could ask his family in a letter. It'd maybe be good to know.

At his question, Marco shrugged. "Could be possible, I've met many people at parties with my parents. Though usually I remember all of the people I meet..." He rubbed his face. Marco was pretty good about remembering the faces of people he had met, particularly family friends. He felt that it was awkward to be reminded of someone's existence, and then not know who they were. Lucky for Marco, he had a pretty good memory. He definitely had not met Fearghal before.

Glancing down at the hankerchief, he paused... Was he offering it to him? No, he was holding it. To prevent their hands from touching. Did Fearghal think Marco was dirty? This was not good. He hoped he didn't look dirty... He had been busy in Herbology class, where it was all about planting. Checking his hands for a moment, he just got over it and shook his hand over it. "It's nice to meet you too." He offered a short smile. "Do you like it here?"

"What do your parents do for work?" Fearghal asked with a tilt of his head. "Mine work for the Ministry. Very important business. My mother works for the Accidental Magic Reversal Squad and my father's part of the Foreign Affairs and Sports Department." Fearghal's father had been talking about his hopes for Fearghal to make his house's quidditch team since long before Fearghal had even received his Hogwarts letter. The 11-year-old wasn't so sure he stood much of a chance of making the team, particularly given how his flying lessons had been going so far. But it was likely that he'd at least try out in order to make his father happy if nothing else.

"Oh, don't mind the handkerchief," Fearghal said, noticing the expression on Marco's face. "I don't care much from germs, particularly germs from people I don't know." After the pair had shaken hands, Fearghal carefully folded the handkerchief so the part that had met germs was folded in, then tucked the entire thing back into his pocket.

The young Gyffindor contemplated this final question as they turned and continued moving up the staircase. Eventually, the stairs ended and released onto another floor. Not the Astronomy Tower. But that was alright, they were probably getting closer, right? He glanced left and right, trying to decide which direction to go. "To be honest, I like it here a lot more than I expected to. I've never done anything like this before, though I guess no one has. But I never went to a public school and didn't spend too much time with kids my own age, so I do like that very much. I would like it better if I had my own room though. I can't stand how loud the other boys in my dormitory are. How are you settling in?"

Admittedly, Marco didn't know all the stuff his parents did. He just knew it was a lot of diplomatic, pureblood, wizard shenanigans that involved a lot of adult stuff. Like money, and politics, probably. Marco's eleven year old mind maybe understood 10% of it. "They travel a lot." Marco offered as they wandered, hands still comfortably in his cloak pockets as they did so. "They do lots of business within the wizarding world, marketing, stuff like that. Talk to people outside of Scotland." That was all Marco could confidently say they did. Even if he knew more, it likely wouldn't have been wise to talk so much about something he wasn't involved in.

At the explanation, Marco seemed to nod. That was very understandable, and much rational than the explanation Marco had come up with in his mind. Some people were not cool with touching someone they had just met, and he felt like that was fair. He had just been raised to know that hand shakes were polite, though he hadn't considered that perhaps not everyone was cool with that. This was good to know. He nodded and took his hand back after. "It's no problem, I'm not offended or anything." He clarified, not wanting Fearghal to think he was being judgmental! He was not trying to be, he was very polite, of course.

Marco was starting to realize that maybe Fearghal also wasn't super confident in where they were going. But he was already here, and he had met a friend, so he was fine with this! "You're not missing much." He said, in regards to public school. "Well, unless you like a busy life like that. That's totally fine if you do." He clarified, walking besides Fearghal."But I already prefer it more here, this place teaches me relevant information, more so than my school back in Scotland." He paused. "The dorms are... Yeah, not ideal." he admitted. "But I already shared a room with my brother, so it just feels a like a bigger version of that."
