What to Say?

"i'll come back, when you call me. no need to say goodbye." the call, regina spektor
Marco had been sitting up at the Owlery for about an hour.
He just couldn't think of what to write back to his family. All he had written was a 'Dear Mom and Dad', and that's where it ended. He knew, to some extent, he needed to write back something. There had to be some sort of update so they didn't think he had died or something. But truly, he had nothing to say. Plus, they could've assumed what he was doing, couldn't they? He was a student. He went to classes. He studied. He met people. Though he figured he could mention that he had been placed into Ravenclaw. He wondered if his parents would be interested in what house he ended up in. He didn't think it would matter. If his performance was bad, he figured it didn't matter if he ended up in any other house.
Though so far, he was doing great! So perhaps he could write that. And yet, he didn't write anything. Marco was still staring at a blank sheet of paper. He sighed and ran a hand through his hair. Why was he not able to write anything? Was he just thinking too hard about it? Was it possible to think too hard? Thinking was good, Marco figured. But it did not seem to be helping him in this case. He sighed and set his pencil down, staring up at the ceiling. Maybe he needed to do the opposite. Maybe he had to not think. That was hard for him! When he wasn't actively thinking about something, it was a little terrifying. Marco was someone who was constantly within his own head. He didn't say much, but his thoughts were quite loud.
Unfortunately, he just seemed a little lost to anyone watching him. He was sank back in a chair, staring at the ceiling. For a brief moment, it was silent in the Owlery, and he was starting to space out. Aaand.... Marco had suddenly fallen asleep in his chair. He didn't realize how tired he was, as he suddenly dozed off.

Despite being exactly that, she walked up the many steps to the owlery and into the stone room with the confidence of someone who knew exactly what she was doing. She would figure it out at some point. Luckily enough, there weren't many souls occupying the owlery when she arrived. Well... not many human souls. Plenty of owls were going about their business, in their little rooms, in their bath, or flying in and out of the open windows. It was oddly dirty, remains of food and bits of owl waste made for quite the unpleasant sight, though she shouldn't have expected animals to be tidy.
Letter delicately clutched in her hand, she looked about for some sort of instructions or even a person who looked as though they knew what to do. She had made it this far, gathering from all the owls that dropped off mail in the great hall that the owlery had to be Hogwarts' post office. It was silly, Delaney felt like some old-timey princess sending messages by pigeon. Where she came from, there were much faster ways to send a message. The fact that technology didn't work in Hogwarts was odd to her. She would've expected magical people to be far more advanced than 'normal people', though she guessed it was just part of the charm.
Part of her was amused at the thought that her mom or dad would have to figure out this bird messaging to speak back to her. The thought of her family only brought about an odd lonely and guilty feeling in the pit of her stomach. Of course, they'd been expecting her to write a letter in great detail about how she was and what Hogwarts was like. Especially her younger sister. Her handwritten letter was quite full, sharing bits of the beginning of her time at Hogwarts. Like how there were real ghosts and somewhat scary-looking 'house' elves, professors taught real spells, anything new and magical she could remember. Even how they separated students into houses with animal mascots, each one having some odd set of traits required- of course adding that ironically, Ravenclaws were not ravens even though they were the only house with an animal in the actual name. As any good Gryffindor would, she seemed particularly prideful when telling them she had been sorted into the house of bravery. Though they would have probably hoped to see her in the one for intelligence instead if they knew about it.
To her luck, Delaney noticed a dark-haired boy in the owlery in the middle of writing a letter of his own. Quickly concluding that he would have to know how to send a letter, she approached him where he sat. "Excuse-" she had cut her sentence short, noticing he was not just spaced out, but slumped back in his chair... asleep. For a moment, she contemplated waking him. She could've just as easily waited for someone else to come, but maybe she would've been doing him a favor by waking him since he seemed to be in the middle of something. Plus, she reckoned it would've been cruel to let him be an unconscious target for owl poop. Either way, she was going to get this letter sent. With a finger, she tapped the boy on the shoulder to wake him. "Hello?"( wordcount. → 566 )────────────────────────────────

What to Say?

Marco wasn't one to dream, but it's not like he was asleep long enough to be doing so. Usually, he had nightmares. It was a reoccurring one, where he was in a dark forest next to a large lake. He knew what this place was, and whenever he thought too much about it, the panic that came from it threatened to show on his face. But before he could even face that nightmare, he felt something poke his shoulder. At first, he tried very hard to ignore it. He was just getting to sleep! But then he realized the chance of the tap being from something that wasn't another person was very low. His eyes fluttered opened and he glanced around, confused at first.
Then, he rubbed his eyes and turned slightly to suddenly see a girl near him. Marco couldn't help it, he jumped a bit when he realized someone was there. Had he actually fallen asleep? And had someone walked in on him falling asleep in the Owlery? This was a nightmare. He probably looked ridiculous. Marco sat up suddenly and knocked his knee into the table. "OW-" He sucked his teeth, clearing his throat in an attempt to be cool and compose himself. After a moment, he slowly turned to Delaney with slightly pinker cheeks and furrowed eyebrows. Though his face relaxed after a moment, almost like second nature. Super casual, nothing was wrong. For sure.
Finally, he addressed her, sitting up in his chair and fixing his posture. "Sorry, I must have dozed off." He mused lightly, a bit embarrassed frankly. Marco paused, glancing to the table. "Did you want a paper or pencil..?" He wasn't sure why he was woken up, really. Was she concerned about him? Or just confused? Likely confused. This was a stranger, she had no obligation to care about him. It was likely for the best that he was woken up, it saved him the embarrassment of perhaps more people finding him asleep in the room.

Though she doubted anyone could have anything close to a peaceful rest while being slumped back in that chair. He seemed a bit jumpy. Delaney didn't mention it, knowing she herself would've appreciated it if someone gave her a moment to actually wake up after they'd caught her off guard. Though, when he bumped his knee trying to sit up and attempt to be casual about it, the silliness of it earned a barely audible chuckle that she quickly covered up with a clearing of her throat. Her only outward expression was a small half-smile and furrowing of her eyebrows, a mix of amusement and perplexion.
"You're pretty brave for falling asleep in here. Lucky the owls haven't..." she started, momentarily distracted from her letter-sending duties, though she quickly changed the topic, trailing off. Perfect, just go ahead and gross him out in a record-breaking two seconds. Owl poop wasn't really something she'd like to discuss with someone she'd just met and needed help from. She hadn't woken him up just to tell him he shouldn't be sleeping in here if he didn't want to get pooped on. "Um, never mind," she added quickly.
At his question of paper or pencil, Delaney shook her head. "Neither, actually. I don't suppose you're busy, are you?" she inquires, her gaze shifting to his paper and lack of words written on it, then back to his eyes. Though his falling asleep at his desk mid-letter didn't really indicate he was truly busy, there was never harm in asking. She would've probably felt bad if she trapped him into helping her without at least first making sure. He seemed the slightest bit strange, but likely nice enough to assist Delaney with sending her letter without judging her for not already knowing how. Or so she hoped.( wordcount. → 332 )────────────────────────────────

At her laughter, Marco's face seemed to remain pink. He didn't like to be obvious when he was flustered, but unfortunately he was quite pale! He simply fixed his posture and just let out a short sigh. He was fine. His knee did hurt a little bit, though... This was also unfortunate. Alas, now someone was here and he had to get himself together. Nobody was allowed to see him slacking. Except for right now, because it was happening! Delaney was quite lucky to be one of the only students so far to catch him off guard. Aside from Novalie, who had fallen on him from a tree, that was hardly his fault. How were you meant to react to something like that in a calm way? Regardless, she did end up being very nice, so he didn't hold it against her. He wasn't one to hold grudges anyways.
"It wasn't on purpose." He admitted. "It's just very quiet in here, easy to doze off if you get too comfortable." Marco explained, pulling up the sleeves of his cloak a little. He just wasn't paying attention too hard to his drowsiness, that's all. That wasn't always a crime! Thought admittedly, it was embarrassing to have someone walk in on him failing to stay awake. It was the middle of the day, and Marco wasn't one for napping. Perhaps he hadn't been getting enough sleep. Did it show on his face? He suddenly became aware of his potential eye bags, though the boy didn't have obvious ones. He was likely just tired from his first few days at school. It was an entirely new life, after all. Going from a wizard family and a muggle school, to no family and an entirely wizard school. It was bizarre, in some aspects.
He tilted her head at her question, though ultimately shook her head. "No, I'm not, I suppose. Can't think of what to write on my letter. Why? Do you need help with yours?" Maybe it'd be easier to have a different perspective. They could help each other, in a way.

Delaney murmured to herself, her gaze flickering to the chair the dark-haired boy was settled in as if not fully convinced. She doubted anyone would find that chair anything but comfortable enough to sleep in. Perhaps he simply hadn't been sleeping well. Either way, it wasn't really her business. She supposed it could be pretty peaceful here in the owlery, taking a brief second to observe the soft ambiance in the room, momentarily distracted. Still, she wouldn't have risked it if she could help it.
At the mention of his letter, she took a peek at the rather empty sheet of paper, nodding slightly as she met his gaze. "I haven't really gotten into the habit of writing letters either," Delaney adds, understanding how it feels to stare at the blank page, not really sure of what to write. Gesturing to the letter nestled between her fingers, neatly sealed within its envelope, Delaney shakes her head again. "No, I've already written mine. It's the sending part I might need a bit of help with. I've never actually had to send one before," she admits, setting the letter down on the edge of his desk near her.
The mental whiplash she had gotten from being tossed into the magical world and school still hadn't worn off. She had managed so far on her own, picking up bits of information she could gather by just observing. But unfortunately for her, there was no "Guide to Hogwarts and Magical Stuff," for her to reference in times of need. As much as she had a certain distaste for asking for help, she supposed she was going to have to get used to it at some point. "Would you mind showing me how? I'd really appreciate it," Delaney inquired, tilting her head slightly as she met the boy's eyes. Perhaps she could try her best to help him with his letter after he lent her a hand in sending hers.( wordcount. → 327 )────────────────────────────────

What to Say?

Marco seemed aware that Delaney did not fully believe him, and he seemed a little embarrassed even still. At the very least, his most obvious body language seemed to be how tense he was. But he was starting to relax as again, it proved that Delaney was not here to make fun of him. Nor did she seem to be judging him for sleeping. Sometimes it was important to! Maybe not in the Owlery... But that was besides the point. He pulled up his sleeves a bit, watching her explore the area as he blinked the remaining sleepiness out of his eyes. He almost wished she had let him keep sleeping.
He was a bit relieved that she also seemed to struggle with writing letters. Maybe it wasn't a personal thing? Maybe everyone struggled to write back to their parents for different reasons. Marco should've started thinking with that, he usually assumed when he couldn't do things, it was just a him thing. But many people struggled with a lot of things. Marco flipped a pencil around his fingers, a habit he had picked up from school. He was quite good at it now, the pencil seemed to spin uninterrupted around his hand as if it was second nature.
"Oh." Marco blinked. Well, he could probably do that. Honestly, sending the letter might've been easier than writing it. Besides, maybe this would give his brain a break from thinking so hard about the letter. He got up from his chair, glancing around the area. "I think the owls do most of the work." He guessed, pushing in the chair he had been sitting in as he had gotten up."You just finish off the letter with a stamp, make sure the address is on it and all, then hand it off to the owl." He nodded to the open windows.
After a moment of silence, he spoke up again. "It's your first time sending a letter, are you a first year too?"

Stamp and address... got it. Similar to sending a normal 'muggle' letter, only the postman is much smaller and feathery. "And the owl just... knows how to get there?" Delaney inquired, turning her gaze to the open windows he'd gestured to. Internally, she appreciated the way he explained without sounding superior or making her feel stupid. She was beginning to take a liking to him.
During the momentary silence, she got to work on stamping the envelope. Was everything magical always this kind of old-fashioned? Admittedly, it was fun stamping a letter like some old-timey princess sending a very important message, however unnecessary it felt. But normal envelopes could do the trick just fine, couldn't they? Much less messy as well. She supposed everything in the magical world had to be just a little bit dramatic. At least it had seemed that way so far. Delaney hesitates for a second before borrowing his pencil to begin writing her address, ultimately thinking he wouldn't mind if she used it for a moment while he was away from the desk.
At his question of if she was a first year, her interest was piqued by his added 'too'. So that meant this boy was a first-year as well. Perhaps he would be a familiar face this year. That wouldn't be so bad at all. She nods, her gaze flickering to his eyes before returning back to the letter. "First year, yeah," Delaney tells him, finishing writing her address on the envelope. In answering his question, she realized she had never actually introduced herself to the boy. Hopefully, he didn't think her rude. "My name's Delaney, by the way," she finally gave him a proper greeting, a small polite smile curving the corners of her lips, pointing to herself briefly with the borrowed pencil in her hand.( wordcount. → 316 )────────────────────────────────

"I suppose so, it seems like there's specific owls for that purpose." He shrugged. Marco knew that questioning every single magic thing that existed in their world would drive him nuts. He did not make an exception with how owls were possibly knowing where to go. Maybe they just had a really good sense of direction, who knows. Regardless, Marco found it to be very impressive. It gave a unique spin on sending mail back home. It was nice that he wasn't the only other one lost in the Owlery, though. For a different reason, but still a little confused.
Marco sat back in his chair a bit, watching the view from the window. Hogwarts was truly a beautiful place. His home back in Scotland was quite massive, but nothing compared to the views that he saw here. The castle in Hogwarts was endless, from what he could tell. Even now, he hadn't seen everything within it's walls. Or outside of it, for that manner. He wondered how many years it would take for him to see it all. Hopefully not too long. He was a bit anxious for knowledge, though that was no secret to anyone that had ever met him.
Nodding at her confirmation that she was a first year, Marco felt a little more comforted. It was nice meeting new people in his year, particularly ones who weren't in his house. It was good to know the Ravenclaws, but he would of course know all of them eventually. If he didn't make an extra effort, he wouldn't know many from the other houses. Returning her smile with his, Marco extended a hand to her. "Marco Rinaldi, from Ravenclaw. It's nice to meet you."

At his mention of owls having specific jobs, Delaney nodded. "That makes sense, I guess," she says, absentmindedly checking her letter once more to be sure it's ready to be sent off with some random magical mail-delivering bird. She didn't know what made owls the preferred choice, but she had learned not to question or think too hard about the way things worked here.
The dark-haired boy introduces himself, earning a polite smile from her. "Marco, got it," Delaney takes his offered hand, giving it a firm shake as she repeats his name back as if logging it into her memory. He had been kind to her so far and would definitely be a face she wouldn't mind seeing around. His last name sounded Italian... was he Italian? The thought was fleeting as she turned her gaze from where he sat to the owls in their little cubbies.
Delaney approached cautiously, holding steady eye contact with the owl she had randomly chosen for delivery. As she handed off the letter to the owl, it took the paper a bit more aggressively than she expected, pulling her hand back quickly as the owl took off and flew through the window. Holding her hand to her chest, she glanced toward Marco with a playful half-smile. "I think it could tell I don't like birds," she tells him, equally amused and awkward.
Hopefully, the owl would make it there without any problems. She reckoned an old system like this wouldn't fail now. At least now she knew how to send letters. Delaney shifts her gaze back to Marco, moving herself back to standing beside his desk. "I'm not quite used to magic and stuff yet," she admits to him. "So... thanks for helping me a bit," Delaney adds, a more genuine smile gracing her face as she thanks him.( wordcount. → 326 )────────────────────────────────
