Prompt: Graduation Artform: Writing

Explanation: I have written an event when Sage is home for the Easter holiday and is celebrating the fact she’ll be graduating in a few years.
Thrilled, I grab Kora’s hand and guide her to our backyard. Cassie insisted for me to wear the traditional muggle cap and gown. The backyard was sprinkled with spring flowers.
“Smile, Sage!” Kora squealed, grabbing my hand as a picture was snapped. My little sister will be there soon, too, I thought. She was only a handful of years younger than me.
“Hard to believe the day is here already,” Cassie reminisced. “Seems like just yesterday you were dropping tea on me.”
I rolled my eyes. “It isn’t my fault it spilled!”
Kora looked at me. “Funny how both of our first instances were related to spilling liquids.”
I smiled and pulled her close.
“I know you don’t graduate for a few months, but I wanted to celebrate with you beforehand,” Cassie explained.
I smiled. “I know. I’m glad we’re doing this; it’s better than any other boring spring.”
“Are you excited to graduate?” Kora asked, looking over at the roses growing in the garden.
“I guess. I mean, I don’t really know what I want to do with my life, but it’ll be fun to have a new adventure outside of school.” In truth, I didn’t really know what I wanted after school. Graduation wasn’t long away, but what I wanted after school was still unknown to me. The future usually was.

Explanation: I have written an event where Sage has a dream of the day of the car crash. It shows how she faces the darkness because it is quite a difficult time for her to remember.
A dream I had at nine was what proved how strong I was.
It was the day Mum and I had gone out looking for books and it ended up being the day she died. The day my life changed forever.
I never dreamed about the accident. I couldn’t. Dreaming about it only reminded me of what could have been.
The dream was different than I thought it would have been. I wasn’t two, I was nine, like I was then. But Mum was the same age. Maybe because she didn’t get to live any longer.
Dream me was running around when Mum walked into the room with a wide smile. “Sage!” she called.
Dream me stopped immediately and looked at her, worried I was in trouble. “Yes, Mum?” I replied.
“Do you want to go get some books? The shop has a sale today.”
I grinned. I loved reading. “Yeah!”
Mum smiled and took me out to the car. “I’ll just get my bag. Then we can go.”
We went off to the bookstore, but a truck barreling down the road stopped us before we could get there.
The dream flashed forward from the initial crash to after when I woke up in the hospital. “Dad?” I asked, looking to my father sitting in a plastic chair.
“You’re awake,” he announced. “Are you in any pain?”
I was. My leg . . . it burned. Twisted. Shattered. “My leg,” I managed.
He nodded and stood slowly. “The accident . . . was quite large.”
“Where’s Mum?” I asked.
His face clouded. “Sage . . . she didn’t make it. Hit her head and . . .”
I couldn’t keep myself from crying.
“But you survived.”
I looked away. I still hadn’t looked back at him.

Sage had just turned ten, and didn’t quite yet understand why most girls her age were giggling over boys. And why boys in particular were the targets of their conversations. Why boys? What’s so special about them? And why is everyone so . . .? Sage didn’t have a word for it. All she knew was that often she wondered why most girls her age were so giggly with boys, there was nothing special about them.
“Cassie?” Sage asked her step-mother one day before going off to Hogwarts. “Are all the girls at Hogwarts going to be as giggly over boys as the muggle girls here?”
Cassie smiled at her step-daughter. “Some might. Why? Does that bother you?”
Sage shrugged. “I don’t know. Maybe? I just wonder why they’re all so interested in boys, of all people.”
“Some girls aren’t. Some girls like everyone, some like no one. Some only like other girls. It’s the same with boys.”
Sage thought this over. “So . . . a girl . . . could like everyone? Or just girls?”
Cassie looked her step-daughter over. “Do you think that applies to you?”
“I don’t know.”
Cassie offered her a warm smile. “You don’t have to make up your mind now. It’s a difficult thing to process.”
Sage knew well that her step-mother liked both girls and boys. “Was it hard for you to figure out?”
Cassie smiled at the ground. “Somewhat. But once I found the label- and not everyone has those- I felt so much better to know who I truly was.”
Sage nodded to herself.
“You don’t have to fall in love right now, Sage. It’s okay if you don’t feel that way, and it’s okay if you do. There’s no time frame.”
