Culinary Kerfuffle Finished

Esme was tired. When you’re born from two magical people, you kinda just lose enthusiasm. That isn’t to say Esme doesn’t love magic, but these first year potions were for the most part known by her already. She kept herself awake enough to not fail the mixture, having the concoction explode in her face would be less than ideal in her opinion. She hums a tune in her head and then looks to the teacher, waiting for new directions.

She nods at the given directions and continues her brew. “If only this was like cooking, the final result doesn’t even taste as good.” She looks to her side now, she notice a girl around her age, based on the uniform they were probably Ravenclaw. She looks around before turning again to speak. “I need a minor second opinion, which is better cooking, or potion making?” She was multitasking for now, but soon she’d loose interest in potions. She quickly pretended to be staring forward again, hoping not to invoke the wrath of the teacher and by extension her parents due to a bad grade. She slowly looked at the other girl. “Sorry if you’re trying to focus, I just wanna know.”

Jam stared at her potion blankly. It was a bleak, mundane, boring, and whatever kind of synonyms, task. In her head, all she could think of was the sugar cookies she had baked two nights before, stored safely under her bed in the dorm.

Suddenly, Jam heard a voice. It took her a second to realise the girl beside her, who seemed to be from Hufflepuff, was speaking to her. Jam waited for the teacher to turn their back before she answered in a low voice, “Cooking, definitely!” Jam stole a glance at her teacher, just to make sure she doesn’t get caught. “And, no, I’m so not trying to focus. I’m bored out of my mind!” Jam said thankfully, before turning away when she realised their teacher was about to catch her.

When the teacher turned back again, Jam quickly quipped, “You know, I thought these lessons were supposed to help us. I feel kind of betrayed.” Jam whispered before dramatically quoting Murdock from the A-Team, a muggle movie her father watched with her, “They burned us again, Hannibal. We trusted the system, and it turned on us!” Jam looked at the girl, giggling, hoping she didn’t scare her off or something.

Esme nods, this only confirmed and cemented her thoughts. She nods, the life in her heart reaching her eyes again as she wakes herself up. “I knew I was right.” She grins and continues brewing before eyeing her surroundings.

“Hah…I’m not quite sure what that’s supposed to mean….” She smiled with a friendly expression, and the smile had reached her eyes, but if the sentence was to be believed, she had no idea what that quote was from. So she was mostly giggling at the girl’s delivery than the quote itself.

“Esme Xiao, Hufflepuff, if you couldn’t already tell.” She dips her head to the girl out of respect. Then she looks at her potion to ensure it was still safe and well made. “What’s your favorite thing to cook then? I bet it’s good if you really like to cook, no?”she looked at the girl with a sweet and cheeky smile, not only did her kindness rub off, but Esme felt mischievous, talking during class wasn’t something she usually did, so doing it now was surprisingly fun.

She passed the girl an ingredient to make it look less suspicious for Esme to be talking to her, hopefully it didn’t look too suspicious.

Jam took the ingredient from Esme, immediately understanding her intention. “Hmm…” Jam pondered, “It definitely has to be honeyglow risotto… No, cauldron curry! Or, um, tranquil tea lo mein? Ooh, maybe…” Being her usual, indecisive self, Jam couldn’t choose just one meal to mention - the variety was wayyy too diverse!

Jam cut herself off when the teacher started speaking to the class about some caution when brewing the potion. It was probably unimportant, because most of the other students didn’t seem to be really concerned anyway. In the meantime, Jam shot an apologetic look at Esme. She knew she was rambling, she just could never be stopped until circumstance allows it.

When the teacher went to the opposite side of the class, Jam shifted her seat a little closer to Esme before reviving their somewhat rebellious conversation. “But mostly I do baking. You’ve ever heard of gingerbread cookies that actually get up and run away? Classic dessert for this time of year!”

Jam realised she was talking way too much about herself without even introducing herself. She quickly corrected her mistake, “Oh right, I’m Jam and I’m from Ravenclaw. You look great in yellow by the way, it suits you!”

“That’s big selection.” Esme admitted, her head nodding slowly as she really thought about the foods on that list. “But may I ask? Why do you like to cook, why does it bring you joy?”

she noticed Jam’s expression. She replied using a reassuring smile, letting Jam know it’s okay. After all Esme would talk a little bit more if they weren’t confined by class rules.

“Baking? That’s always nice. I sometimes make little snacks for my siblings, though I could be better at baking.” She thinks about what she could improve with baking while paying attention to Jam. “I have heard of running gingerbread cookies, they’re fun to play with too, don’t you think?”

“Nice to meet you Jam, I’m glad we’ve reached a first name basis.” She smiles bashfully at the compliment. She didn’t know if she could truly accept it, but she knew it was genuine. “Thank you, I had never really thought of that.” She adjusts the Hufflepuff themed tie to straighten it out. She realized it was a little crooked and felt embarrassed to know this after everyone else around her. “I love your name, and your glasses too. They really match well.” She looked for the teacher for a moment and then messed around with her brew for a bit.

“Oh, thank you!” Jam replied happily. It had been ages since she received a compliment, and it was nice to finally hear one for a change. There wasn’t really much to talk about anymore, and class was going to end soon anyways.

A thought suddenly sprang into Jam’s head. If Esme was really so passionate about cooking, she has to be really good at it right? I’m sure she’s just being modest, but to really know what her food tastes like, I need to taste it!

The girl admitted to herself that she did feel a little threatened by the emergence of another first-year “chef”. It’s not like Jam was really well-known for her treats, but she felt a little pang of jealousy that she wasn’t the only one around who had a great passion for culinary arts. What if Esme was better than her?

Jam turned to Esme to propose an idea, that would be both fun and competitive. Jam did really love a good competition. “Class is ending soon, but I’d love to try your cooking someday,” Jam started, “If you’re up for a little cooking competition, just let me know, okay? We can work out the date and time from there.”

Esme too began to realized the change in time, and she was excited to finally have an opportunity to flee this class, Esme hadn't gotten any proper sleep the day before. She nodded when Jam thanked her for the compliment, Esme smiled serenely.

Esme was getting ready to turn in her brew, mixing it a few times and then writing down the ingredients she used to ensure memorization of the potion, after all, it might be needed later on, and Esme knew that with the train of thought she currently held, memorization wasn't the dominant factor at the moment.

Afterwards, she began packing her bag, checking to see if she lost anything and ducking when some mischievous classmate threw a paper ball at her and she quickly ducked before continuing her packing, she looked at Jam to see if she was done with her packing, since she planned on walking alongside her.

When she noticed Jam began to talk, she payed full attention. "Competition, eh? I see." She nods again. "Alright, you'll get my owl soon, I'm excited to do this, but I must warn you, there are professors to avoid, from what I hear, avoiding classes are hard, we've gotta be sneaky."

Jam quickly packed up as well, seeing that Esme was already doing so. The girl slipped her materials into the designated locations in her bag. She was quite the organisation freak and had a whole system for where she put the numerous things she had in her bag. She always complained there wasn’t enough space, but she refused to believe her problems would be solved if she took out the 3 books she had stored inside for “emergencies”.

Jam started having a few regrets about proposing the competition. It seemed like Esme didn’t hate the idea of it, but still, she felt a little guilty for her competitive nature. She was a Ravenclaw, so it’s understandable. It was just a little immature though, especially since Esme seemed very relaxed about it.

Hearing about Esme’s comment about the house elves, Jam hummed thoughtfully, “Oh don’t worry, we can always cook somewhere else? If you’re up to visit my muggle home.” She hoisted her bag up to her left shoulder and slipped her right arm into the other strap.

Jam got out of her seat and started walking towards the door but stopped moments after. She had forgotten all about her friend in the heat of the moment. Okay, maybe not really “heat”, but everyone else was already leaving the classroom and it was impossible not to be swept away by the crowd.

After realising her mistake, Jam turned to her Hufflepuff friend, “Hey, you coming?”

Esme watched the girl pack up, chuckling quietly about her hyper-organization of her school supplies, Esme did like organization, but bags weren't included in this, in fact if you looked in her bag right now, it would resemble a rats nest in there, this was a major reason why she was hoping nobody saw inside of her bags, she'd feel incredibly ashamed of herself if anyone called her out. She shook out of that thought and smiled at Jam's reply relating to the food in her kitchen.

"Wow, you're amazing, that must mean you had a hand in cooking the food?" She thought about it, if Jam was secretly cooking food at her own house, that would be incredibly impressive, who knows which food she made, she was on par, if not better than them at cooking, Esme was unsure if she could even compete.

She got stuck in the classroom anyway, she naturally let others out before her, but sometimes all that happens when she does that, is she has a crowd of classmates making a constantly moving wall past her, she didn't regret showing manners and allowing others to go before her, but it sometimes seriously impeded her when she was trying to be quick.

She heard Jam's voice and decided it was about time she melted with the crowd and tried to fight Jam. "Don't worry, right here." She said randomly, hoping that Jam understood where "right here" was.

Jam fought off the wave of students and pushed through them a little roughly. She heard Esme’s voice call out from somewhere in the crowd and headed towards that direction. Jam craned her neck with furrowed brows, hoping that she didn’t miss Esme.

After most of the chattering students exited the class, Jam finally spotted Esme and skipped happily towards her. She chuckled after thinking of the whole situation that just happened. It was completely normal for Jam to lose her friends in the sea of students after class, but it was a little unusual to take this long to find them.

Jam was curious what Esme had going on after class. Jam herself had nothing else to do, except maybe whip up a new batch of her Butterbeer Cupcakes. She was planning to pass some to her professors, since many of them had seem to have a liking towards butterbeer.

The Ravenclaw girl caught herself getting lost in her own thoughts and forgetting she had company, so she turned to her new friend. She fiddled with the hem of her shirt as she asked Esme, “Do you have anything on right now? I’d love to walk you to wherever you want to go.” Jam paused for a moment before continuing, “Or if you don’t have anything on, I can walk you to your dorm?”
