2023/24, Stage 1 Hufflepuff vs Gryffindor: Match 5

It had been a bit, hadn't it? A year long break and now Lea returned to the block, this time as a Co-Captain too. An unexpected yet welcome title, one she wore with some pride and one that distracted her from summer or her new barely upperclassman standing. It wasn't nerves, surely, that kept her gaze down as she adjusted the cuffs of her sleeves and examined her wand until they were introduced and called up. Returning to the block brought a wave of memories, instinctively moving into position as she glanced towards her wrist for a bracelet that wasn't there. She frowned slightly before dismissing the distraction from her mind. A simple nod to Lucia's cheer and the duel commenced.

Jake eyed the small Ravenclaw duelling captain with some sympathy. He remembered how nervous HE'D been when he'd first started watching over duels, two years ago now. Her nerves were plain to see - he tried to flash her a small smile. Though somewhere deep down it DID make him feel a bit better. Usually HE was the nervous one...

In fact it was probably the first time he'd ever gotten up on the platform for a duel and DIDN'T feel like he was trembling. That had to mean he was growing right? He'd faced the worst spells the game had to send at him and it'd been miserable but he'd survived, hadn't he? This year there were going to be THREE opponents, so he had to be ready for anything.

"Ready guys...?" he asked his team-mates - his new fellow duelling captain Lea, and Lucia Fox. He took a deep breath and held out his wand.

aries was ecstatic for her first ever duel. she grinned and waved, hurrying to catch up to her fellow team mates. hey nicky! kim! aries greeted them. she glanced at the opponent's side, hufflepuff. she could definitely be a prodigy at heart, but she had to prove her worth. aries knew it would be difficult, but she had caring gryffindors on her side to help her out. are yall ready? she asked, beaming with joy and a bit of pride.

The first round probably wasn't as chaotic as it could've been, but to little old Robin she had to refrain from letting her mouth drop open as spells started flying from both sides. Lucia would decide to cast Obscuro at both Kim and Nicky, but despite an amazing cast, both of the Gryffindors were able to dodge it. Though, unfortunately for Lea, she wouldn't even be able to successfully cast her spell, and Robin felt a tiny bit of sympathy for her. She wasn't sure what had distracted Lea so much, but hopefully she would have her head in the game next round. Jake would then attempt to cast Ventus at Nicky, but apparently the Gryffindors had perfected their dodging skills before this duel, because Nicky had successfully dodged the spell.

Honestly, Robin was quite grateful that there didn't seem to be much chaos this round. At least she would have some time to get comfortable with overseeing a duel, and then the chaos can begin (probably). Luckily for the Gryffindors though, Nicky's Ventus spell at Jake and Lucia would have some luck. Jake would be lucky enough to dodge, but Lucia wouldn't be just as lucky. It would hit her and Robin would wince slightly as the poor Hufflepuff got attacked by a large gust of wind. Well, it could've been worse. At least it wasn't fire or something equally as terrible. Kim would then cast Obscuro at Lea, and it would be a very lucky hit. The spell had nearly missed, but Lea would likely be annoyed to realise that it had been an impaired hit, so the blindfold was only half covering her eyes. A nuisance more than anything, and definitely not the result Kim was looking for.

This round appeared to be the most successful for the Gryffindors. At least, the ones who had done something. For some reason, Aries had decided to simply stand there and not attempt to move or cast a spell. Robin knows that that definitely isn't meant to be part of the duel, and she can't help but stare at Aries in confusion. Was she daydreaming? Or simply taking some time to collect herself? Whatever the reason, she should probably stop doing that soon. With one round done, Robin released a shaky breath. She was getting the hang of this, she could do this. Hopefully. At least she wasn't the one being attacked by spells.

A fourth year compared to a fifth year wasn't too much of a difference yet last times that Lea had been up here, she had always felt like a burden to her duelling partner- especially so in her first year. Yes, there wasn't much of a difference now, but could Lea keep up? Perhaps now was the chance to prove it as the Hufflepuff thought of a more advanced spell she learned on her own. Her wand shot forward even as brown eyes still glanced between the Gryffindor team to choose a target- she found two, opting for both the youngest and oldest as she formed a Z in the air. But keeping track of two targets while reminding herself of a newer spell with the additional awareness of her team and the audience left the spell fizzling out before she could even finish uttering the word, "Confrin-"

Her momentary surprise and annoyance was ample opportunity for the Gryffindors to take their chance. Lea only realized the spell flying towards her once it was halfway across the pitch, hissing slightly as she ducked away- it worked enough to stop the cloth from completely covering her eyes, wrapped oddly as her perception was somewhat lost to a blurry gauze and the rest able to glimpse at her opponents and teammates. More annoying than anything else and enough of a reminder that this was an official duel now. Focus. Her teammates seemed to be struggling in a similar fashion which- she couldn't decide if that was a comfort or just unfortunate.
