Closed A “Charming” Class PV Pendulum Feather & Orion Quinn

Pendulum decides to head to Charms Class early as it is their first class, which turns out to be a good idea because they get lost. Five times. These moving staircases... They increased the average amount of times I got lost hugely! However, they knew which floor the Charms class was supposed to be on, and eventually managed to follow a first year Slytherin to Charms class. Good thing I left one hour to get to the class on time...

Pendulum checks the time. 3 minutes left until class would start... made it! Phew. That was close.

They then look around the class, wondering where to sit. Usually, Pendulum sits right at the front, where they can focus better, and close to the door (or, if that's not possible, the window.) However, for this first class, they're considering sitting next to someone they know instead.

Almost having given up hope, Pendulum spots Sylvia. There! They sit next to her, more towards the middle of the table.

"Hey, Sylvia. Excited for Charms?" They say, glad to sit down after spending so long searching for their class.

Pendulum really doesn't have much mental capacity left after searching for the class for so long. Honestly, they kind of hate the moving staircases. What did the Founders have against forgetful people and those with bad visualization? Still, they had been interested in Charms, and they still were.

After taking longer than was necessary for breakfast, talking to other Slytherin first years and getting some advice from a few older students, Orion noticed the time. I had better get to class, it wouldn't do to be late on the first day! He asked an older student where he might find the Charms class room and followed the directions, walking briskly. He had to waste three of the precious few minutes he had left waiting for a staircase to decide it wanted to align with the floor he intended to traverse. When it finally did, Orion bolted up the stairs and onto the landing just as the staircase apparently changed it's mind and moved once again. How do students not fall off the staircases all the time?

Orion looked wildly around for the proper classroom and after another few fretful minutes, located a sea of young students who all looked to be in their first year crowding around a doorway trying to get in. He assumed this must be the correct classroom. He was right. As he got closer, he could see inside. It was quickly filling up. He pushed and squeezed his way in, much to the chagrin and annoyance of a few of the students who received a sharp elbow or stomped foot.

Once he finally made his way inside the classroom, Orion took a moment to look around and soak it in. Unlike other classrooms he had seen in the past, this one had tables on either side of the classroom, tiered in such a way that each row was raised above the one in front of it so that all students could see the middle of the classroom where there was a long pathway from the front to the back of the classroom.

Orion looked around trying to spot an open seat somewhere when he spotted Pendulum dropping into a seat next to Sylvia. There was even a free seat next to Pendulum! Orion made a beeline for it. He sat right next to Pendulum as they asked Sylvia if she was excited for Charms class. Orion took that moment to give a quick greeting and a smile to both of them and tried to catch his breath.

After a unbelievably long period of boredom, Sylvia finally decided that if she sacrificed her sleeping time earlier this day, she might as well compensate for it right now, since there isn’t anything else that could be done in the last few minutes before class anyway.

Just as she was about to drift into sleep, the sound of chairs shifting beside her startled her, waking her up from dreariness completely. Lifting her head up to have a look, she saw that it was Pendulum, a girl (or maybe not?) who she has spent some time getting to know during the past several days at Hogwarts. So far, they seemed to share quite a few common interests, but unlike Sylvia who only values Charms for its practicality, she was especially intrigued by the subject itself.

“Hey, Sylvia. Excited for Charms?” Pendulum asked as she took a seat beside Sylvia. “I’m definitely looking forward to starting the class, or else I’m seriously going to fall asleep!” She replied. Although it might sound like a joke to others, she’s actually telling the truth of her current situation, though she doubts that Pendulum would understand why she could be sleepy before the first Charms class. How long am I still going to have to wait?

A short while later, another person who she’s relatively familiar entering the class — Orion, isn’t it? He spotted the two of them in a second, and also came to join them, with an equally enthusiastic expression.

Pendulum notices more and more people filing into class... It seems they weren't the only person to get lost (or maybe the others just didn't see any reason to come early.)

Orion slips into the seat next to them and muttered a greeting to them and Sylvia, seeming to have an aura of frenetic energy. Maybe he almost got late... Well, they haven't seen anything else to support this yet, so it could be something else as well.

Pendulum decides to take out a quill-pen and paper. Sylvia jokes to them: “I’m definitely looking forward to starting the class, or else I’m seriously going to fall asleep!" Or is it a joke? She does sound a lot like some of the friends Pendulum had with wacky schedules...

"I can see that," they chuckle to Sylvia. "Hello, Orion," they tack on.

It seems like most of the class is filled with people now. Pendulum doesn't know how many students are supposed to be in the class, but it seems likely that most or all of them are here by now. Huh, the teacher will probably be here soon.

"Did you two have trouble reaching class too?" Pendulum asks Orion and Sylvia curiously. Well, Sylvia probably didn't since she arrived even before me. They're still curious though.

They look around the class, making note of all the other first-years they see.

Orion took a moment to catch his breath and tried to ignore the looks of annoyance and glowering from his fellow first years that he had bullied to get into the classroom on time. Well, if they weren't willing to play a litte dirty, maybe they didn't deserve to be in class on time, Orion thought to himself.

Orion heard Pendulum ask he and Sylvia if they too had almost been late. Orion smiled at this, "Almost, but luckily some of our fellow students were nice enough to clear a path just for me. I got caught up on the stairs. Did you know they change? Like, they actually move to different landings whenever they feel like it! It's absurd, someone could fall and die!"

Orion scoffed at this and reached into his bag for his Charms book. He opened it to the correct page to match the spell that was written on the chalkboard. He then turned to Sylvia, "Hey, remember when you said you would join a club for mischief? Well I might have found an opportunity for some." He smiled mischievously at Sylvia.

Orion hoped he had piqued both of their curiosity and hoped he would have enough time before class started to explain his idea.

After Orion catched his breath and officially settled down, Pendulum brought up a question that she seemed to have wanted to ask for quite a long time. “Did you two have trouble reaching class too?” Sylvia stifled a laugh after she heard Pendulum’s words. Only if I had, perhaps I wouldn’t have been so bored just now. She thought with amusement.

“Not really, at least for this time. But the staircases can get a bit tricky sometimes.” Nodding in agreement to Orion’s frustrated words, she added, “I never understood why the founders of Hogwarts did that either. Perhaps I’ll go find a book about it later today if I have the time.”

As she reached down into her bag to take out her ink and quill, she heard Orion say something to her, which interested her almost instantly. “Hey, remember when you said you would join a club for mischief? Well I might have found an opportunity for some.” A chance for mischief? I couldn’t possibly miss out on that, could I? Curious, she immediately asked: “Really? What is it?” Looking down at her watch, she decided to tell Orion a bad news before he begins explaining, “You still have exactly 90 seconds to explain it, starting from… now. Guess you’d better hurry up!”

Sylvia almost seemed like she had laughed at Pendulum's question... Well, someone didn't have trouble getting here, they guessed dryly. Moments later, their guess was proven right.

However... Yes! Vindication! The staircases are more trouble than they're worth! Pendulum felt strongly on this topic. Some might say, too strongly, but those people probably didn't have as much trouble with navigation as they did. At least in their opinion, it was a serious design flaw!

"It's supposed to keep out intruders," Pendulum said to Sylvia, remembering the explanation in Hogwarts: A History. "But... it seems like it could definitely have a negative impact on students too. Well, it already has, but..." Pendulum trails off and chuckles.

Pendulum looked at Orion curiously when he mentioned he might have an idea on making a club for mischief. In all honesty, Pendulum wasn't exactly someone most would consider mischievous. In fact, they loved reading, writing and drawing most of all, and they'd go outside for nature, but not necessarily for people. Still.... It could be interesting...

Then Pendulum's brain caught up to the second thing Sylvia had said. "90 seconds?! You'll really have to tl; dr it!" Pendulum freezes in cringe. Spirits, I've spent too long on the internet. Wait, will that even make sense to a pureblood or halfblood?

"I mean, summarize it," they amend.

"I am curious, though!" They add, genuinely. Was he secretly joking...? Was there a second meaning? I couldn't tell.

Orion smirked. This was exactly what he wanted, he knew he had both of his new friends' full attention now. He wondered how much he could reveal in the very short amount of time he had left. Also, how much should he reveal? He didn't want to scare them off but he also didn't want them to think he was hiding something outrageous. It really was just a minor bit of mischief, however, it could potentially lead to quite a bit of mischief if Orion's suspicions were correct.

Orion leaned in so only the other two students could hear him. "Alright, I'll be as quick as I can be. I heard from an older student that there's a way to get into the kitchens and take extra food and sweets if we want to! The only catch is, students aren't technically allowed in the kitchens so we would have to sneak out after curfew. It'll be risky but if we can get a bunch of food, it's possible we can make a few galleons by selling it to our fellow students. Pen, you can buy some new sketch books and things for drawing, and you both would be able to buy any books you could desire!"

Orion hoped he didn't come on too strongly and that he was persuasive enough to convince them because he had not gotten the notion that they were all that mischievous but he knew they were sorted into Slytherin house for a reason. He waited anxiously for their reactions.

Just as Sylvia was about to ask what Pendulum was previously talking about, maybe because they noticed the perplexed expression on her face, Pendulum went on to explain that she originally meant for Orion to summarize whatever he’s about to say. Still curious about what “tl” and “dr” means, Sylvia asked: “What does those abbreviations that you just used mean? I’ve never heard of them before.”

Listening to Orion’s description of his idea of mischief, Sylvia somehow didn’t feel as excited as she thought she would. Checking out the Kitchens after curfew sounds like a great idea (not as thrilling as sneaking into the Forbidden Forest or Hogsmeade though), but stealing the food inside to make money? She’s not really sure whether she would want to do that.

After all, although her parents haven’t given her huge amounts of galleons to spend, at least there’s ample money to get through this term. With all these books both in the school library and at home, she isn’t that longing for any specific book at the moment either. The thought of stealing from someone, especially a school that feels like a second home to her just doesn’t seem that appealing. However, before Pendulum states her opinion, she isn’t planning on bringing out her own completely.

Remembering that the Kitchens are also down in the basements, she said: “The Kitchens could be a good place to start with, since it’s quite near our common room. But still, I would suggest observing the surroundings first if we’re actually going to try it out, just to see if there’s anyone on guard at night. Getting into trouble in our first week here definitely won’t be a good idea if we don’t want teachers all paying extra attention to us in the following days.”
