Jake took a deep breath as he took his place on the dueling piste. The duelling chamber had become a much more intimidating place once he had participated in a duel himself. Now he KNEW how much it could hurt, and didn't want to see anybody else feel it. But at least as a moderator nobody was going to be striking him with lightning (twice...)

It WAS going to be kind of an exciting duel, he supposed, because he had even a FIFTH year in it. Galton was a duel captain himself, so Jake knew that he knew what he was doing out there. The rest of the kids were in his year, and Callie had been in his last duel - though it hadn't gone so well for her against a pair of intense Slytherins. Hopefully today's would go a bit better for her.

"Okay everyone, it's the final stage of the season!" The words came much easier to Jake now, who at first hadn't been able to stop from stammering. It turned out two years of being a prefect and a duel captain forced you to get a little better at public speaking. He still got nervous sometimes, but it was a lot harder to tell. "You've all dueled before so you know what to do! Everybody do your best and good luck to you all!

"And no cheating," he added, "'Cause I'll know." Hopefully, he really would. nobody had ever tried to cheat before so he wasn't really sure if that was because everybody played fair or because he really WOULDN'T know.

Nicky went up to the stage with all the confidence that she could manage. She was getting a new partner every duel now so whatever bond she might have formed with Galton in the short time they had to prepare for the duel, it wasn't nearly as strong as what she had with Sylvie the year before. But she was stronger now, better at adapting to different situations and Galton seemed like a reliable partner so she was simply going to focus on their strategy and fight for the win. She took out her wand and smiled at Galton, waiting for the duel to start.
"Gryffindor for the win!"

Duelling came as naturally as breathing to Callie but that didn't stop a wide grin creeping onto her face when she took to the stage. As she waited for Jake to finish his long and boring speech about rules and not cheating, the fourth year rocked back and forth on the balls of her feet. "No cheating! I got it already!" Callie huffed impatiently. "Let's go already! This is going to be fun!"

Pericles climbed the stairs alongside his ally. He ignored the crowd, focused intently on their opponents, silently sizing them up while he went. The last time he'd faced Galton was during the International Summer Tournament. It was an intense match between six duellists that boiled down to a fight between the Gryffindor and Ravenclaw lads alone. They had run out of time, and Galton had been a fierce contestant. Pericles knew to be braced for a hell of a fight. The other duellist was in his year, though he only knew as much by passing, probably a glimpse now and then in class. He offered a firm smile to the two all the same.

Jake's directions were listened to intently. Peri's mouth twitched with a grin at Callie's enthusiasm, which compensated for his quietness. He was even less talkative than usual. Undoubtedly this was a product of nerves; it was the last chance of the season to rope in a win for Ravenclaw, after all. He took his spot alongside her, raised his wand for a formal bow, and assumed a ready stance. "We're tied with Hufflepuff for points. Let's take our team to that tourney."
Action: Preparing.

Galton was not sure how to describe the feeling that he had as he walked into the Dueling Club. It wasn't quite nervousness, nor was it nausea. While he knew the former, the latter was of great familiar to the boy who had a tendency of vomit from overeating - this feeling was neither of those. The closes approximation he could pin it to was unease. Not because of who he was facing, or who he was partnered with (all parties were fine duelists), it was the fact that he wasn't sure how he would handle himself.

He was win-less this season. Not that he won every match, but he had a historic pattern of going two for three each season; a record which was now out of grasp. Not only that, but in each match he had managed to have at least one of his own spells backfire on him. In many cases sealing his fate. But the cherry on top, the coup de grâce that set this unknowable feeling in him was that he had failed a to spread a spell two casts in a row in his last match. Other than practice, he had never failed to spread - and twice!? Unheard of.

Nonetheless, Galton would do his best to unburden himself from the feeling as he took his place on the piste. He'd slip a Sherbet lemon into his mouth as he strode onto the wooden floor. A final attempt to ease his uncertainty. He looked over to the two familiar duelists he'd be facing. Callie - one of the first duelists he'd gone against who'd beat him, and Pericles - the formidable summer opponent who'd faced him in a game of true chaos.

Standing next to his teammate, he took his stance and flashed her a smile in reply to her cheer. "Exactly my thoughts." he'd add. Whatever the feeling was, it was time for the real game to start. Galton the Glorious would be joined with Elsa the Enlightened. The duo wouldn't be forgotten anytime soon.

Jake learned quickly that this was going to be a very different type of duel indeed. You knew that you were watching true dueling masters, when wands started waving and you could barely even tell that anybody was doing anything. Because it wasn't bursts of light that charged across the platform at each other, and thankfully no fire, no lightning, or anything flashy like that. Elsa shot a wind jinx across the platform that rocketed off-course towards Pericles and was easily dodged, but it was the only attack that flew.

No, this was a duel of preparation. A duel of strategy. Fog began to creep onto the platform from Galton's wand - over the WHOLE platform. Both sides! An ominous fog began to set the tone as the Ravenclaws didn't even try to hit their opponents. Not with anything painful at least...Luckily, Jake was getting more and more used to knowing the types of spells the other kids used in dueling, and even better, knowing how to hear the incantations when everybody was speaking over each other. It was an arresto momentum from Callie that he heard, but it didn't just go out in one direction - but two! Elsa managed to dodge, but Galton wasn't so lucky. Galton, who Jake had seen popping candy before the duel (Jake thought about pointing out that you weren't supposed to duel for at least an hour after eating, but he didn't think that Galton would listen) would feel everything become sluggish, as his whole body began to slow. And Pericles turned his wand towards himself. Was Jake's eyes deceiving him...? Or did both Ravenclaws seem to stand a little taller after Pericles's bravery charm?

Jake knew many duelists had mastered the art of casting two spells at once - to Jake it was an ability that was almost mythical. He'd tried it himself but had never gotten even close. He always considered himself lucky if one spell worked. Could it be that there were MANY duelists in this duel who could do that? If THAT was the case, this was gonna get VERY interesting.

The duel was off with a bang. Pericles saw Elsa's wand point towards his partner, yet the wind jinx intended for Callie careened off in an arc, hurtling for him instead. The Ravenclaw was quick to dance out of its path with a few swift side-steps. Callie's attack slowed Galton to a comical slow-mo, and he called a short "Good shot" to the side. His forehead furrowed as a dense fog swallowed the stage. Before he lost sight of her entirely, he split a Bravery Charm between them both. Any anticipation for what the formidable fifth-year was up to in the fog dissipated. Peri's head was held a little higher, shoulders squared and chest puffed.
Action: As strategized.

"MAN, I HATE THE FOG THING." Callie exclaimed and let out a brief huff of annoyance. Put simply she was rather tired of being targeted first every duel. She wasn't that scary looking...right? Callie prided herself on her kindess so why did she always get spells thrown at her first? That was a problem that Callie hadn't quite figured out yet. "Good work though guys, that was clean as HELL." She let out a brief cheer even if she was encouraging the opposing team. What use was duelling if she couldn't recognise a good spell when she saw one?

In the blinking of an eye, chaos began, but Nicky was used to it. That was pretty much every duel she had been in and she knew that to survive the chaos and get victory for her team she had to be patient and keep on fighting. She had the best team. One that deserved a win.
