Date | Feb 5th, 2023Taking a deep breath as Monica made her way into the duelling hall. This was her favourite moment. That calm before the storm, the lull before the boom, the anticipation of a good duel to come. The Slytherin had very quickly fallen in love with duelling, sure broom racing was thrilling, and quidditch was crazy fun, but there was an elegance to a good duel. Squaring off against your opponent, utilizing well crafted spells to out match them. That's what she loved most.
She could feel her heart racing, though the beats were different than if she were about to duel. This rapid thumping was due to her nerves of moderating the match to come. It was an honour when Bea approached Monica, seeing if she would care to moderate this unofficial duel, but as the time grew near, the second year wondered if she was really up for the challenge? Well there was no turning back at this point.
Soon enough the duelist entered the space as well. It was a simple 1v1 match between Beatrice, Monica's best friend, and sir Avery, someone Monica had seen often enough around the common room, but had yet to really get to know the boy.
Taking centre ring, Monica called the two together, "Alright, looking for a good clean duel..." Monica began her speech, going over the rules, and making sure the two parties were ready to start. "Alright!" Her voice was strong, and booming, though the room was quite empty. "Take your places!" Once the pair took to their corners, Monica stepped back herself, turning her head from each person, the last look before she called, "START!" And the duel was off.Information

When Bea had agreed to do this duel, she hadn't expected Monica to agree to moderate. In a way though, it made sense. She was Bea's best friend but also Avery's housemate. Things balanced out. Smiling as she came into the Duelling Club she waved at Monica, putting her bag down in the stands. She'd come prepared today. Red curls tamed into a braid, and solid, if a little loose clothing. A simple pants and shirt combo. She'd forgone a woollen jumper, not wanting it to hinder her movements, no matter how cold the stone castle was at this time of the year.
Stretching a little, she smirked as she looked around the room to find no first year Slytherin waiting in the shadows. It seemed just like him. But then again, it would be just like him to announce his presence with a rolled out red carpet and fanfare. She rolled her eyes at the image. Yes, definitely the fanfare. Their interaction the previous week had given her the impression that Avery was proud and cocky. She hoped to wipe the smug smirk off his face.
Setting herself up on one side of the piste she eagerly awaited her opponent. No mercy today. No hesitation. Just clean simple spells. She knew what she was doing. This mantra rang inside of her head as Monica went over the rules. Just before it was to begin, she interjected Monica, the same twinkle in her eye as last week. Smiling at Avery, she taunted him as she raised her wand, "I hope ye've got some fighting spells in ye arsenal Leveret. You're going to need them!" With that, she began her assault.

┏ -----A very had anticipated a friendly match, but something about the look on Beatrices’ face spoke of something otherwise, as their eyes met in what was the dawning moments of their skirmish.
The groomed boy had agreed to this on the basic understanding that any practice was necessary practice. Win, lose or draw, this would serve his ends perfectly. In the event of a loss, he’d have had active experience with an upperclasswoman, and he couldn’t be called a coward for taking up the offer; that was almost with it alone. If he won however, now that would do wonders for his confidence, skill and reputation but that was something he couldn’t and didn’t rely on. That wasn’t to say that he was not going to prepare, or take it seriously. It was entirely Avery to be diligent in everything he did, and practice and preparation for their duel was not exempt from this trait.
Whilst he hadn’t entered into fanfare, regrettably, he wasn’t late for the allotted time; especially given that both were giving up some of their time on a Sunday for this, and he seemed to respect Beatrice and Monica too much to insult them so; though anyone else could have been a different story.
Avery wore more of the same clothing he usually did, seemingly not learning his lesson from the last duel about wearing wool, or seemingly not having to worry or care for new clothes; as he practically stank of old money. His black hair was slick back, and free of his face; which seemed to be strangely content.
“Monica, Beatrice.” He greeted, after having set aside his leather duffel on one of the closer benches or bleachers. To the first he had beamed a smile, it was good to be polite to your own house members, let alone your own house members that were prefects. To the latter, a simple nod as he began his approach up the steps to take his place at the piste.
“I hope ye've got some fighting spells in ye arsenal Leveret. You're going to need them!" His opponent gave, in her endearing Scottish twang. It was an easily recognisable taunt, but a cheap one; so he made a mental note to retort with added venom, to show her how it was done, whenever the opportunity presented itself. For now, Avery remained quiet, he wanted his spell-work to speak for itself; with the sole aim of overwhelming her with sheer efficiency and speed.
With measured steps he took to the piste, with his chestnut wand in hand, taking the last steps to his position before he readied himself and bowed across to his opponent; pureblood etiquette never strayed far from the Leveret boy. At the signal, his wand was up, and the duel was to begin at last…

Date | Feb 5th, 2023The duel started with well enough pleasantries, of course Monica had to bite her tongue when Bea started some taunting. Monica had to remain impartial, she was here to monitor the duel, and not cheer for her friend. It would seem that Avery was being a gentle-man about the whole thing, not choosing to speak back.
Once the duelist took to their marks, and Monica called go their wand were up in a flash! Bea was quick to cast her first spell, with little to no issue, it was as if she was in perfect harmony with her wand, Monica was rather impressed, though she knew Beatrice would make a fantastic duelist. Though it would seem that Avery knew his way around the duelling ground, and with barely a sweat, he was able to dodge out of the way of the spell.
Barely a moment to breath and the Slytherin boy fired back, hitting his mark! Monica watched as her friend's legs began to move to some rhythm only they seemed to hear. Though the spell didn't seem that strong, it would make things a little harder for Bea's next move. What an incredible first round! Both these competitors came ready to fight, and Monica loved all of it!Information

┏ -----A nd with that, they were off.
He was immediately receptive to Beatrice’s first spell that shot out from her wand with a quickness and virulency that spelled a violent end for him. The wrapping binds hurled through the air and tried to clutch at him, but with a fashionable lean it careered past him and landed limply somewhere behind. That would have thrown an elf from the shelf, or whatever expressions those muggles used.
He wasn’t one to dwell on things that weren’t to be, and so he quickly flicked his wand in the direction of his opponent and gave an equally quick: “Tarantallegra!”
He had only a few seconds to truly appreciate that he had landed the first blow, that he had made an upperclasswoman to look to so funny; but this was only the beginning. He was banking on his luck to continue, and he would need it; given her experience and wider repertoire of arcane spells.
She had as much to lose as he had to gain, he thought. Perhaps she wasn’t coming at this from a point of bad intent, offering it just for his sake; for practice; but he would surely milk every advantage from it he could even if that also meant someone he could learn from. In that hope, he didn’t retort to her earlier taunt; still keeping a reply ‘locked in the chamber’ for when he felt it would be most appropriate or classy to. Avery did opt to quip at her though, playfully:
“Nice moves~” He said, performing a little boogie with his arms and torso as some kind of playful mimicry before he focused up...┗ ┛

The start was supposed to spell a grand victory for Beatrice. Instead it spelled misery. Bea cursed as she watched the blindfold miss its target and fly away to land on the floor like some limp rag doll. Good god! Couldn't her wand do anything right! She had a few seconds to scowl and ponder this before Avery cast his own spell in return. Bea's eyes widened at the movement and she turned to dodge, but it was too little, too late as the spell was cast. It flew from Avery's wand, landing its mark on her, making her feet dance some sort of stupid jig.
God she hated this spell. Twice in one weekend! First the broom race and now this duel. She wanted to ban it outright for causing such misery in her life. The scowl returned to her face in full force. There was no going easy from now on. Although she'd hoped for an easy win and perhaps easy bragging rights against the cocky younger Slytherin, the feeling withered away as the seconds of dance ticked by. Avery's mocking little dance and quip nailed the lid on the coffin. She wouldn't go easy in the next round. He would go down and she would win. Now she just needed to get the timing right with her jig steps.

Date | Feb 5th, 2023Coming into the next round, both the duellist were clearly here to win. It was so thrilling! Monica wasn't sure what she expected when she took on moderating this duel, but for some reason she was shocked with how intense the two players got so quickly! Clearly they were taking this sport very seriously.
Avery was a little faster as he raised his wand for his next spell, Monica watched as he aimed with such poise and so quickly, the spell flying from it's caster with such perfection, hardly giving Bea the chance to jump out of the way. The collision was intense, she would have felt the power behind that Flipendo, no doubt about that. Monica stood up, assessing the situation and making sure Bea was able to still take part in the duel... the girl was hurt, but not too bad to have to be pulled, "Duel still on!" Monica called out, insuring things could continue.
Maybe it was cockiness, or maybe he started to doubt the Ravenclaw, but Bea, nearly as quickly as she stood up, threw a spell of her own... Monica watched and expected Avery to at least TRY to dodge out of the way.... but the boy just stood there.... what on earth was he doing? Certainly not paying attention.... to no surprise, the boys wand few from his grasp, Bea able to disarm her opponent, and from the looks of it.... it went far, even Monica lost sight of the wand. Avery would have to really take time to search for his wand, least he let Bea get in some free hits.
Monica was at the edge of her seat, looking over she could see Bea's feet begin to slow, seems the spell was wearing off, might be some good luck for the Ravenclaw to come?Information

This duel wasn't exactly going the way she'd hoped. First her blindfold had missed and she'd been hit with the stupid dancing spell. And now she felt the air leave her body for a moment as Avery, the cocky snake, pummelled her with a Flipendo. Oof! The spell knocked her back across the piste, her body rolling away from Avery.
Willing the air back into her body, she heard Monica called out something about the duel. She wasn't sure what it was, a faint buzzing temporarily overtaking her brain. Something about her Da and concussions rang through her head, but was quickly dismissed. She was in this to win. Why couldn't she just have a small win in this? She'd been so sure of herself coming into this.
Picking herself up, she stood swaying slightly, heaving in great gasps of air as she quickly fired off her own spell in retaliation. She must have got the timing right with the jig steps because she smirked as the spell landed on its target, watching as Avery's wand flew far out of his hand. Served him right for the previous spells. "Thanks Leveret! Think that one," she nodded her head in the direction of where his wand had flown, "has been my best one yet!" She laughed gleefully.
Things were finally going her way. Her opponent was unarmed, unable to cast spells any time soon, and she could feel the Tarantallegra wearing off. Things were on the up!

┏ -----W ith the flick of his wand and a silvered incantation spoken, he landed a hit on her as she danced about like a fool.
It was too easy, hitting a target what posed little threat to him. Every ounce of him believed that he was going to strike her, and for a moment it looked as though he was about to send her into a backflip which certainly would have added to the drama of the duel. Naturally, he had sucked a breath in over his teeth; that must have hurt indeed. Dark pools watched as she staunched herself, admirable really. What he hadn’t expected was Beatrice to compose herself so well, so quickly; to the point that she would be able to weave some skillful wandiwork between the bounces of her merry jig and sling a spell straight back at him.
He and his chestnut wand rarely agreed, a growing theme of his first year at school. With every successful cast, he seemed cursed with two failures; at least in lessons. It leaving him so freely was lost on him in the moment, but he would surely consider this easy betrayal in a much more critical manner, but for now all he could do was watch as his wand whistled out of his hand and began an arcing trajectory across the duelling room. He couldn’t make out where it landed, as it landed behind some benches and rolled out of view; having only the clattering sound to go off of.
Excellent, now he had no wand and the effects of his spell were beginning to wane as the vigour of her dance kept to a slowing, inaudible, beat. She quipped at him again, which roused an instant squint; that was cold. Firstly, she had used a spell that swung things entirely in favour and secondly she had displayed significant skill to pull that off; both of which irritated him greatly and he made sure she could see it on his face.
“And yet you’ve only found it in you to hit my wand, and not me…” He smirked at her, with his typical, punchable, face.

Bea seemed to have gotten well on her feet after that last hit, even was able to add in some snarky comment, that Monica couldn't help but chuckle at.
Moving into the next round, Avery took the time to search for his lost wand, perhaps it was a smart move, not much her could do (to Monica's assumption) without his wand. The boy began searching, Bea taking advantage of this moment to get another spell in. Monica's eyes watched as she cast out her fire-making spell, seemed like things might be going her way. Avery seemed like he was keeping an eye on what Bea was doing, but seemed like he head might have been so focused on locating his wand, that he didn't quite get out of the way of the spell. The boy was set ablaze, though it didn't seem like it was crazy powerful, it still looked like it hurt quite a bit, "oh..." Monica couldn't help but let the word slip out of her mouth. Leaning out of her spot slightly, the Slytherin tried to get a better look at Avery, it seemed that he was still well enough to stay in the duel, "Seems like the Ravenclaw has some bite back, " Monica commented with a smirk to her friend, "What a duel we have here!" Monica's voice began to mimic a wrestling announcer, she was have way to much fun with this.Information
