Defense Against Lucas Chapman

Mentioning @Lucas ChapmanDora picks out the book and steps down from the ladder, careful to avoid the tomes flying about. With a small pile of texts in her arms, she walks out from among the shelves and looks for a quiet place to sit. The area near the fireplace looks very comfortable, like the Hufflepuff common room, but it's where most students have already chosen to sit. Instead, to leave them their space and give herself some, Dora sits down at a small table off to the side of the room. As she gets situated, she spares a glance to the nearby cordoned off area, the Restricted Section. She's simultaneously intrigued and frightened looking into it, wondering what dark secrets might lie in there.
'Well, it's no place for a first year like me.' Dora thinks as she gets to work. Today she wants to focus on Defense Against the Dark Arts. It's not a subject she particularly enjoys, as it's so, well, dark. Just talking about the Unforgivable Curses sends a shiver down her spine. But, she also knows she needs to perform her very best in order to please her grandmother. That's why she's looking at 'A Compendium of Common Curses and their Counter-Actions'. This shouldn't be too scary since there are counter curses, right?
Dora's fairly pale by nature, so maybe it isn't noticeable when the rest of the color drain from her face while reading this. There are so many awful spells here.. The Conjunctivitis Curse, the Furnunculus Curse.. Even something that sounds amusing like a Laughing Curse can have horrible consequences. Least comforting of all is how the book explains that sometimes a curse is too powerful for a counter-curse to reverse, and the victim has to live or die with the consequences. After about twenty minutes, Dora has to close the book and push it aside for her own sake.
'Maybe I should just read up on Doxies instead...'

Defense Against Lucas Chapman
Had Isadora spent much more than a glance towards the Restricted section, she may of noticed Lucas standing right infant of it, staring at it enviously. Her thoughts could not of been further from Lucas', who wanted nothing more than to find out what kind of dark secrets lay inside, very much thinking that it was a place for a first year like himself. If it wasn't for the librarian, he may well of actually made an attempt at breaking in, but decided he was best not to.
Instead, he simply strolled down the isles of the library, occasionally grabbing a book and skim reading the first few pages, eventually grabbing a book about vampires. Despite his more studious approach as of late, he was still a fish out of water in the library for the most part, and wasn't exactly aware of normal library etiquette, which became clear when his eyes fell onto Isadora. During their last exchange, Lucas had somewhat of a self realisation, and decided he would approach her as a new, better man.
"Isadora, my greatest friend!" He said loudly, making his way over towards her table, with that usual, almost teasing grin on his face. He'd approached just as she'd closed her book, so he quickly peered over her shoulder at the cover.
"What are you reading that stuff for? That stuff is all easy." He dropped his own book onto the table, going to slide into the seat across from her.

Dora winces at the loud voice, coming from someone who clearly doesn't know how to act in a library. And that voice... Dora steels herself as Lucas Chapman walks up to her table. He has that smug look on his face, as always, and he wastes no time in invading Dora's personal space by leaning over her shoulder to see what she's reading.
"What are you reading that stuff for? That stuff is all easy."
He asks, dropping his own book loudly on the table and making himself comfortable. It seems he'll be hanging around for a while... Dora had hoped he'd lose interest in her, but it seems that even without Bradley around, she's still his favorite subject of amusement. His question is phrased mockingly, and hits Dora's insecurities square on the nose.
"It's not.. I mean.." She replies, flustered. She holds herself back from saying that it isn't as easy for him as it is for her. "I'm just... studying. For class." Dora makes a point to keep her voice down, already embarrassed that he might be drawing attention their way.
Dora's never seen him in the library before, and she's here pretty often. What is he even doing here? She glances at his book, her eyes widening when she sees it's about vampires. She tries to avert her eyes so he doesn't notice her peeping. It's best to just avoid interaction. It's just so hard when Lucas can so easily get under her skin.

"It's not easy?" He raised an eyebrow, evidently having caught onto what she stopped herself from saying. There was a flash of confusion on his face for a moment, and he seemed to hesitate, before speaking again. "Defence Against the Dark Arts is an easy subject." He finally said with a small shrug. "But I guess it's interesting, so it's fun to study." He tapped at the cover of his own book.
Despite his loud arrival, and creating a fair amount of noise while he shifted around his chair, and tried to find a comfortable position, he eventually settled down, and was no longer offensively loud, unlikely to draw much attention to either of them.
"You know, I met a Dhampir recently." He flicked open his own book, his eye quickly scanning the page, as if he was looking for something specific in the book. "Seemed like a weird kid, he was crying blood alone in a bathroom. Crying blood seems like a pain, probably takes a lot to clean it up." He closed his book with a sigh, evidently already having lost interest in finding whatever it was he was looking for.
"What curse were you studying? You should try practice them more.. Practically. My dad taught me a couple of spells before I came Hogwarts, but it's a bigger gap than you'd think between the theory and actually applying it. I about took my eye out when I first tried to disarm something."

Interacting with @Lucas ChapmanLucas talks about how easy Defense Against the Dark Arts is for him, and Dora can't help feeling envious. He doesn't even like studying, he said so last time they met. He probably doesn't even work that hard to do well in the class, and he isn't bothered by how scary the subject matter is.
Dora is. Ever since a discussion she had with Ruby Cazares, she's been more wary in this class. All the dangers on the page seem much more real after knowing some of Hogwarts' history.
"You know, I met a Dhampir recently." Lucas continues, his voice a bit loud as he talks nonchalantly. "Seemed like a weird kid, he was crying blood alone in a bathroom. Crying blood seems like a pain, probably takes a lot to clean it up." He closes his book as Dora shudders. 'Crying blood?' She thinks fearfully. 'Is that what happens with the blood they drink?' Dora has no interest in meeting a dhampir face to face. Who knows what could happen? She just hopes Lucas doesn't see how frightened they make her feel.
"What curse were you studying? You should try practice them more.. Practically. My dad taught me a couple of spells before I came Hogwarts, but it's a bigger gap than you'd think between the theory and actually applying it. I about took my eye out when I first tried to disarm something."
Dora winces. A backfiring spell can do a lot of damage, and she wouldn't wish that on anyone, even Lucas. His casual attitude on curses is off-putting though. "I... don't really want to curse anyone." Dora mutters. She's already learned the Curse of the Bogies, as if that isn't enough.
"...What are you doing here?" Dora asks quietly, not quite making eye contact. He's not even reading his book anymore, he's just talking to her. Or talking at her. Does he want something? Does he just want to pester her?

"What kind of person do you think I am?" He raised a brow, obviously slightly taken aback by her comment about not wanting to curse someone, interpreting it as her suggesting he might. "I don't want to curse anyone either, but it's important to know the skills and stuff." He shrugged, reaching across the table to shift her book around, so he could better see the cover.
"Got to be able to con- Oh." He grinned suddenly, a rather amusing memory coming back to him. "You do have some issue with control, don't you? Made quite the scene at, uh.. What'd of been my eighth birthday party? He leant back against the back of the chair, a surprisingly genuine smile on his face as he reminisced. "You should probably work on that, you know.. Loosing control of your magic like that wouldn't be too good for you in a duel."
When she asked about what he was doing there, he idly tapped the cover of his book. "I wanted to try find some more stuff about Dhampirs.. Did your parents ever mention them? My dad mentioned them off handedly a few times, and about how miserable most of their lives must be.. I guess that kid kind of proved it, you should of saw him. All blood pouring from his eyes.." He asks accusingly, and Dora feels a pang of regret for her comment. "I'm sorry, I didn't mean to imply..." It's awful of her to assume like that for anyone. Lucas isn't evil, why would she say it like that? She finds herself questioning everything again, wondering if she's the real problem. Like Bradley says, it's just a joke, she's too sensitive. She's always making it out like other people are out to get her. She's just being dramatic.

Lucas smiles as he brings up one of Dora's more unpleasant memories. She'd forgotten it was Lucas's birthday party when she'd had her first instance of magic. She just wanted to Bradley to stop calling her a Squib, and the next thing she knew, his drink sprayed up in his face. She'd been so relieved at first. She was a witch! But Grandmother was so cross at her for causing a scene in front of her friends..
"You should probably work on that, you know.. Losing control of your magic like that wouldn't be too good for you in a duel."
Dora can't remember if Lucas was one of the ones teasing her that night. If he was, can she blame him? He's right, she can't control her magic! Every time she messes up a spell, she knows it's just her fault for being half a witch.
Lucas continues on, talking more about dhampirs. As he does, she begins to feel a bit queasy. He finishes, and she shakes her head uncomfortably. "Please stop, I hate... blood." It's not a great lie, what with her family's profession, and she doesn't like telling it. It's the talk of dhampirs that bothers her. They're terrifying! Eager to change the subject, she says, "If you like dueling, maybe you should join the dueling club."

"Not a fan of blood?" He pulled his chair closer to the table, sat fully at attention now. "You know.. Hmm." He frowned, idly moving to scratch at his chin. It had almost came naturally to want to tease her about something that, at least him, seemed to be such an illogical fear. Why should you be scared of blood? It's a very natural thing, that everyone had, and everyone would see within their lifes, so Lucas couldn't really comprehend why someone would particularly dislike it.
After a few more moments of hesitating, he eventually asked. "How come you don't like blood?" It was probably just a natural instinct, like how he had naturally seemed to be fearful of spiders. "Although, I guess most people might of been a bit put off by all the blood coming out from his eyes.. That was a new sight." The oddity of that sight had sort of been lost on Lucas when he'd first happened upon the scene, only later had he actually really realised how off putting the sight of someone crying blood was.
"I was thinking of joining the dueling club, yeah." He nodded. "My dad would probably like it if I did, and I think dueling could probably be a lot of fun. You thinking about joining any kind of clubs? Maybe, uh.. I'm not sure what'd suit you really, to be honest." He shrugged.

He's frowning, and she can't tell if it's because he caught her small lie or if he thinks it's a silly fear. Sure, it's not like Dora likes blood. She just doesn't go faint at it. No, it's more the pain associated with blood that she's afraid of, and more than that, the fear of being attacked by some kind of half breed.
"How come you don't like blood?" Lucas asks, and Dora's surprised he didn't take the opportunity to tease her about it. But, his next words aren't as pleasant. "Although, I guess most people might of been a bit put off by all the blood coming out from his eyes.. That was a new sight."
'Please stop talking about the dhampir...' She thinks squeamishly.
"I was thinking of joining the dueling club, yeah. My dad would probably like it if I did, and I think dueling could probably be a lot of fun."
Well, that makes sense. Lucas likes Defense Against the Dark Arts, and he doesn't even get scared talking about curses like Dora does. Admittedly, she's a bit jealous of that. She'd never be able to hold a wand up to an opponent, much less win anything. And hearing him talk about it like it's so easy... Has she fallen behind?
Dora realizes Lucas is waiting, having asked her about clubs while she was thinking. "Huh? Oh. No, I'm too busy for extracurriculars." She admits, her studies taking up most of her time. "How is Mr. Chapman?" She asks when Lucas mentions his father, knowing it to be the polite thing to inquire about. In the back of her mind, though, she's still wondering about dueling.

"So Dhampirs are the issue, not blood?" He reached back for his book, flicking through the pages. It was a shame really, as the book was missing any substaintial detail about Dhampirs, beyond just mentioning them off handedly. As a fear, it was one that he could understand a lot more than blood, but her reaction at just the mention seemed excessive.
"Huh? Oh. No, I'm too busy for extracurriculars." How was a first year too busy for extracurricilars? Would first year not be one of the better years for joining extracurriculars, given there weren't any major exams, nor optional subjects?
"Do you really study that much? You could find the time easy enough, I'm sure. Your grades are probably fine, I doubt you need to study this much."
