Meeting a Friend
Loren entered the library cautiously, nervously, knowing they were a little late to the meeting that they had arranged with their new potential friend. Can she really blame me though?, they thought, Its such a nice day out, and its so easy to get lost here, and... . The thoughts trailed off as they tried to think of other reasons why it was fine that they were late.
Looking around though, it seemed the coast was clear and they thanked their lucky stars that they didn't see their classmate yet. With a little more luck they would hopefully be able to pull off the notion that they hadn't been late at all, just doing a little bit of light reading of.. whatever book could possibly be nearest. An Assemblage of the Strangest Jigs known to Wizards across Time ??? What does that even mean? Nevermind. Throwing that idea entirely to the wind, they found a quiet corner of the library to just sit and observe in, deciding that any of their own thoughts would be easily more interesting than whatever strange jigs that book could hold.
But perhaps those strange jigs would have been a good idea, because as they sat there the only thing they could think about was who they were about to meet, and how they were going to go about doing that. Best prepare.

Hi : ) Feel free to jump in and chat. I wrote this to rp with a particular friend but they're no longer writing on the site. I figured I'd put it out there anyway and roll with the solo rp or improv story with any of y'all.

Meeting a Friend
Becca resisted the urge to run down the corridors as she made her way to the library. She was running late to meet the Hufflepuff first year she made plans with today. Admittedly, Becca got lost once again in a book. She had pulled out her beloved paperback telling the story of King Arthur by accident when rummaging around in her trunk for … something; she couldn’t remember anymore. Once the book was in her hand, she knew she shouldn’t have opened it, but she couldn’t resist.
Suddenly, it had been two hours later, and Becca was late.
She walked into the library, desperately trying to hide the fact she was slightly out of breath, and scanned the room for the Hufflepuff. After a moment, Becca saw them sitting in a corner and winced.
She hoped they weren’t waiting for her for too long.
Adjusting the strap of her book bag more out of a nervous habit than anything else, Becca walked over to the first year. What was their name again? Becca thought to herself. She was pretty sure it started with a L.
Becca forced herself to smile as she walked over to them, raising her hand in a slight wave. What would she even say to explain why she was late? ‘Hi, sorry, I lost track of time, which is something I do a lot. I was reading a book I have read a hundred other times. Please still give me a chance to be your friend.’
“Hi, it's me Becca! I hope you weren’t waiting for me too long,” Becca said quietly while she tried to force down the nerves and guilt.

Meeting a Friend
The library was quiet as Loren waited for Becca to arrive- the shuffle of pages turning and distant rumble of students was highlighted only occasionally by a cough or a student giggling at whatever their friend next to them had said. More than once, Loren's eyes wandered to the groups of students and they found themself suppressing a smile as they wondered what the other kids might have found so funny.
To an unobservant bystander, Loren looked like a usual student spending their time studying for an upcoming test or reading some new interesting magical literature. To an observant bystander, Loren looked like (and indeed was) a usual student sitting in the library and staring directly at the table ahead of them as though reading a book- except with no book on the table whatsoever. Rather than reading, they thought about the day as it had passed so far.
'i woke up happy today, my blankets were so soft and warm- which is good cause the room got cold cold last night. and the sun was so pretty and yellow and you could see the little dust floaties in the sun dancing around... maybe the sun looked so extra yellow because it was coming into Hufflepuff dorms? Is it possible to charm the sun? probably? oh and then after that i had class, and I FINALLY got to talk to Becca a little bit more. BOY she is intimidating though... i mean look at how many books she reads! i swear she has read more books than are in this library and probably every other library combined. i wonder if she likes Inkheart? its a muggle book so maybe she doesn't know it.. but it is really good- Fane and i-'
A pang of homesickness hit Loren as they thought about the time they'd spend with their parents back in Brighton reading before bed and with their little brother Fane acting out their favorite scenes and favorite characters. And, for a moment, Loren considered leaving the library to go write an owl home instead. 'surely Becca would understand... i could find a good excuse...'
However, all feelings of homesickness and thoughts of truancy left their mind as they looked up and realized that Becca was approaching the table and, more nerve-rackingly, Loren themself. The seeping mire of sadness was quickly replaced by a combination blow: the jolt of excitement accompanied by it's usual partner- the pang of anxiety. Loren sat up taller in their chair, and offered a return wave to incoming Becca.
"Hi, it's me Becca! I hope you weren’t waiting for me too long"
"Oh gosh no, I know! uh.. no I mean, I know that you're Becca but no I haven't been waiting here very long at all." Loren stumbled over their words a little, but was satisfied that they had gotten their point across. Loren noted the bag slung over Becca's shoulder, "I like your bag, do you have homework that you want to do? I left my school stuff in my room but I can run and grab it if you have something you want to get done, I didn't realize we were bringing our stuff from class." There was a brief pause as Loren's face suddenly became quite serious, "Galloping Gorgons we don't have homework do we?"

Becca smiled encouragingly as the Hufflepuff student sitting at the table stumbled over their words, relieved they didn’t seem upset at her. Then, Becca felt her mouth drop open as she stared at them.
She felt her brain short-circuit. Everyday in this world she learned something that expanded the realm of possibilities in her world, and that could be overwhelming. But this, this was even more shocking to her than the sorting hat.
Gorgons were real? Not only were gorgons real, but they galloped. How fast could they move? Did they chase people in hopes of turning their victims to stone? Were Medusa and her sisters real? Are all the Greek myths real? Which ones were real and which ones were fabricated?
No, stop, Becca thought to herself. Don’t get sidetracked and blurt out a dozen of questions. Pick up the thread of conversation.
“Um,” she said, trying to find her train of thought. She forced herself to smile as she took off her bag and sat down across from … crap, what was their name? Lynn? No. Larson? No.
Start from the beginning, she thought to herself.
“Thanks,” she said placing her hand on the bag she laid on the table, “my da gave it to me as a present for my birthday this year. I wasn’t really planning on doing homework. I thought about writing a letter to home later.”
She needed to write home. She hadn’t written to her father since the first night here at Hogwarts. Every time she sat down with parchment and quill to write, her mind emptied. She wanted to tell her father everything but couldn’t find the words to tell him anything.
But that wasn’t something she could focus on right now. She needed to figure out what Loren - aha, she remembered their name – knew about gorgons.
“And I don’t think we have homework,” Becca said to assure them. “At least for now.”
Becca chuckled nervously, then she leaned forward to whisper to Loren. She took a second to push down the fear she was about to ask them a stupid question.
“Gorgons are real? And they gallop?”

“Gorgons are real? And they gallop?” Becca seemed both completely awestruck and completely terrified at the concept. She had leaned in to whisper the question, almost as if she was afraid to ask it.
"Gorgons? Yeah they're real! I don't know how often people come across them- its not like they're common I guess- but yeah definitely gorgons are a real thing. Did your parents not tell you about them?" Loren said quizzically. Their eyes were narrowed and, though they had been looking off somewhere to the side as they explained, as they asked their question their gaze rose to meet Becca's.
For a moment it seemed as though Loren had forgotten that they were in a conversation. They didn't quite say anything, but their eyes watched Becca- and it wasn't quite clear whether they were looking for a reaction, or an answer to their question, or if they were just taking in whatever details they could. Their face moved as they watched, mirroring and so revealing parts of the thought process that was silently occurring.
And then, as quickly as it started, the moment passed and Loren shrugged "As for the galloping, I have no idea. But NO CHANCE that I ever want to meet one. Can you imagine? That would be so scary! If they're anything like what I've been told, maybe it would be better if they ended up not being real."

“Gorgons? Yeah they're real! I don't know how often people come across them- its not like they're common I guess- but yeah definitely gorgons are a real thing. Did your parents not tell you about them?”
Becca nodded as Loren’s eyes met hers. For a moment they watched her with an unreadable expression. It seemed as though they were lost in thought, and Becca was about to ask if they were staring at her or just lost in their own head. Becca got lost in her head a lot, so she understood how easy it was. Quickly, though, the moment passed, and Loren shrugged then began speaking again.
“As for the galloping, I have no idea. But NO CHANCE that I ever want to meet one. Can you imagine? That would be so scary! If they're anything like what I've been told, maybe it would be better if they ended up not being real."
Becca nodded slowly as she processed this new information. ’Galloping Gorgons’ seemed to be just an expression, but Gorgons were real. However, it seemed they did not hang around humans enough to be a real issue. Becca wondered if there was a counter to them turning people into stones. Surely, that was a priority for at least one spell maker throughout the centuries.
“I have no idea what I would do if a gorgon came galloping at me, but it probably would be embarrassing,” Becca said with a laugh picturing herself running from Medusa. “My dad raised me, and he’s a muggle. He told me about the myths of the gorgons along with a lot of different Greek mythology, but he wouldn’t have known they were real.”
Becca had heard some parts of the magical world looked down on witches and wizards with muggle parents, but so far she hadn’t met anybody at Hogwarts like that. She assumed the students just had a more open mind now, and those who took issue were already graduated.
“Do magical parents talk about dangerous creatures like gorgons a lot with their children? Or is it like how muggles talk about stray dogs? Like my da would tell me all the time to not pet a strange dog when I went out with my friend Danica, but he rarely talked about how dangerous a hippo was. Unless we were at the zoo.”
Becca looked at Loren with curious eyes. She had been told before that her questions were too weird, but she couldn’t help herself. She like to figure things out.

“I have no idea what I would do if a gorgon came galloping at me, but it probably would be embarrassing,”
Becca was laughing as she said this, and her comment caught Loren off guard. Enough, even, to evoke a snort and a bout of giggling. Loren's face broke out into a wide smile and they nodded spiritedly as Becca continued.
"My dad raised me, and he's a muggle."
That caught Loren's attention. It wasn't uncommon for a student to have one magic parent and one muggle parent nor was it unheard of for a student to be from a completely non-magical family, but meeting someone who was immersed in the muggle world was still very interesting for a kid like Loren who had very little contact with it.
Becca explained about her life at home; and Loren listened, entirely enraptured by what Becca was saying. If Becca was hesitant to share about her past, Loren didn't hear it. Their attention was caught up in the strange way that Becca spoke about some things.
myths about gorgons? Loren thought, but they aren't myths they're real.. and why'd she call them magical parents, aren't they just parents? i never thought of them like that before.
"zoo." Becca said. Her tone indicated that it was Loren's turn to talk.
fiddlesticks. i missed it. what did she say? something about a zoo.. and magical parents!
"I don't know much about muggle zoos," Loren ventured, "but I'd wager there are probably some pretty good books in here that would talk all about gorgons and other magical beings. Do you want to have a look with me? And maybe you could tell me a little bit about what its like to live with muggles" Loren reddened, "If you're okay with that." Loren cringed as they looked to Becca to see what she said, hoping beyond hope that they hadn't missed something important.

Becca watched Loren’s face reddened and wondered why. Were they embarrassed or did they suddenly get warm. But the room didn’t feel any warmer to Becca. As she wondered, Loren started speaking again.
“If you’re okay with that.”
Then they cringed and looked to Becca. Becca waited for a moment to see if Loren had anything more to say. Becca wasn’t surprised Loren didn’t answer her questions; she knew she talked too much. But Loren did make a very intriguing offer. Becca would wager there were some pretty good books about magical creatures here.
However, there was still the confusing aspect of Loren seeming to be embarrassed – Becca now assumed that was why their face reddened since they cringed after asking about living with muggles.
“I had not thought about looking here for books, what a great idea! There’s got to be loads of books about magical beings. Maybe we could find a book that talks about creatures that would be here in Scotland. If we’re lucky, we could find information that could help us catch something!”
Becca considered ignoring Loren’s request about telling them about her life with the muggles, but she decided against it. Loren was probably just curious, and Becca definitely knew what it was like being curious.
“And yes, I’ll tell you anything you want to know about what it’s like to live with muggles.”

Where? Where on EARTH could she be?? I thought to myself, frustrated and quite worried. I remembered the last time I had talked to @Kayla Realma, which had only been a week or two ago, but still! I had looked all over the castle for her several times and STILL had not found her yet! We had only sent each other one or two letters since we met and hadn't even seen each other too often. I felt extremely stressed, and my brain ran a hundred miles an hour. I started pacing around my dorm room aimlessly, my heart started to pound, and I began to breathe heavily. Is she sick? Did I upset her? Did she move schools? No, she couldn't have moved. Hogwarts students are required to stay here for seven years, right? All these thoughts and many more zipped in and out of my mind. I couldn't think straight. I had the urge to look for Kayla again. I had to get out of here to look for her. I swung my dorm room door open, sprinted out of the room, and started scouring every inch of the school for Kayla, every room and facility, all except for the library. As I ran, I could feel my eyes slowly welling up with tears. With teary eyes, I burst into the library in a last-ditch effort. There, I saw two people talking to each other. I recognized one of them as
@Loren Beck Loren Beck, who I'd seen talking to
@Eliza Cunningham Eliza the other day. I was too worried for Kayla and frustrated with myself to pay any attention to

Loren's face lit up, their eyes suddenly wider and their mouth pulled into a smile. Their hands fidgeted as though they had very quickly drank 5 Extra Caffeinated Pumpkin Juices one after the other. "Let's go look then! I think over here are the books on magical creatures, come on!" They stood up, pointing with one hand to a shelf against the wall and gesturing with the other for their friend to follow.
They then made their way across the room and sat down on the floor in front of the shelf they had pointed out. After looking at the spines of the books for a moment they pulled a few off of the shelves, handing some to Becca and keeping some for themself. Then they cracked one open, reading to Becca what they saw, "Fairies are small, humanoid magical beasts with large insect-like wings. They are known to be vain creatures and are almost constantly grooming themselves." They made a face, "Ok maybe I don't want to run into one of them." They then turned the page, "What about this? The Glumbumble is a magical grey, furry, flying insect. It produces a treacle that induces melancholy in those who consume it, though this treacle is also known to act as an antidote to the hysteria caused by eating Alihotsy leaves.. That could be neat?"
They looked up at their friend, wondering what she thought about Glumbumbles and Fairies before their energy fell and their face grew serious. They spoke again, their voice much softer than before, "Also Becca? I just remembered that sometimes it is rude to ask people questions about their life, especially when its about something like who your family is or where you're from. Sorry if what I said was rude, I want you to know that I love that your family are muggles and I'm just so curious about it all. If you'd like, I'm also happy to tell you all about wizard families."
In all the excitement and social faux pas, they didn't even notice the acquaintance of theirs enter the library- clearly with something on her mind.
