Dinner for one?
Felix's time at Hogwarts was going well so far, aside from the point of having made any friends. She wasn't sure if it was her hair or her eyes, but she had completely been outcasted from the people she's tried to talk to. It didn't help none of the girls in her dorm wanted to talk to her, or even made an effort to. This was what she was worried about, not it was not her family, yet her house.
She had sent an owl to her family, telling them of the result of her house choosing, but she hasn't received anything back yet. Felix had a strong feeling this would happen, but it wasn't too surprising. All she needed now was conformation and her worst fears would be true. Though, this would not discourage her, she would still strive to make her family proud, even if they don't accept that she's a Hufflepuff. It was the whole status of a Pure-blood that Felix disliked, why worry over such a petty thing?
Felix was not one for big meals, but having disregarded any breakfast or lunch that day, she decided dinner would be needed. Wandering into the Great Hall, Felix let out a small sigh, seeing quite a few students already seated, waiting for the rest of the student body to come to dinner. Having made no real friends, at the Hufflepuff table at least, Felix looked down the table, eventually spotting an empty spot about half-way up. Figuring no-one would really want to sit near her, Felix walked up to the spot, taking a seat with a small sigh.
"So far, my first year is going horribly." She grumbled to herself, resting her chin in her palm. While she knew every year would get better, for now, Felix was alone. Just an strange looking Hufflepuff.
"Guess it's going to be dinner for one." She sighed, stretching a little as she decided to play with a fork, wanting to pass time before everyone was allowed to eat.

Dinner for one?
Jane sat tucked away into one of the large, comfortable couches in Hufflepuff's common room. She had a large book open across her lap, one she had already read many times before; "Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them." Jane found that this familiar book made her feel a tad more at home in this strange atmosphere.
Glancing up from her book for a moment, Jane noticed the time on the clock across the room. She had skipped lunch, so she could stay to herself. She still missed her parents and wasn't really looking for friends at the moment.
Sighing, she tucked her book under her arm and waltzed out of the common room and into the Great Hall. She was a tad early, so there weren't too many students present. Turning to her own house's table, Jane looked for a place to sit. Most of the Hufflepuffs were grouped together in groups of two or three. She definitely didn't want to sit with them; she was sure she would be left out. However, Jane did spot a girl sitting alone at the other end of the long, oak table. Her mother had taught her to never let people be lonely unless they just wanted alone time. Admittedly, it was a bit confusing, but a saying she believed held merit.
Taking a breath, Jane stepped into her seat and sat gingerly next to the girl. "Hi," she started, attempting to smile genuinely. "I'm Jane. What's your name?"

Dinner for one?
Felix was picking at her food when she heard a voice beside her. Confused, Felix looked over, spotting a girl. At first, Felix was a little bit cautious, unsure why someone would want to sit next to her. Was it to see her freakish eyes? Or to make fun of them? All these thoughts clouded her mind and it was a little unnerving but Felix had to see this as a possible friendship!
Smiling back, Felix faced Jane a little more, pushing some of her hair off of her face.
"Names Felix Winters." She replied, giving a slight nod of the head before deciding to look Jane over. It wasn't a bad thing, it was just a small, nasty habit of hers that she tended to do. "Thanks for sitting here, no-one else wanted to. I just think they don't want to be near a girl whose, different." Felix commented, glancing back at Jane. The other girl seemed pretty trustworthy so far, so Felix wanted to test her limits and see how much she could say, wishing to see how the other would react. Spotting a familiar book cover, Felix smiled a little more.
"See you're a reader too?" Felix prompted, pointing at the book tucked under Jane's arm before looking to her plate. "I miss my library at home." Felix added, seeming to direct the comment to no-one. It was clear she had a few quirks to her, but there were plenty of hidden reasons for the way she acted. It would just going to be a long discussion to find them all out.

When Jane had sat next to the girl, she hadn't noticed some of her... oddities. However, she wouldn't let that deter her. How would Jane feel if someone avoided her just because she looked a little different? Smiling, Jane nodded. "Yeah, I think reading is kind of fun," she commented.
The girl seemed lonely, Jane thought. She had to believe it was because others were avoiding her. How awful was that, that in Hogwarts' most welcoming house that its members would shun one of their own? If that was what the real Hufflepuff House was, Jane wouldn't have any of that, "House Pride" everyone seemed to gush about. What's to be proud of if you don't live up to your house's standards?
"But I'm more interest in the creatures," Jane admittedly, plopping the book on the table and sliding it near the other girl. She opened it up to one of the pages, and pointed at her favorite creature in the book. "This is a niffler," she started. "They're my favorite."
Jane wasn't sure if the other girl was genuinely interested in what she had to say, or if she was just being polite, but she decided to continue for a few pages anyway before closing the book. "Sorry if I went a little overboard, I just love animals a lot."

Felix felt a little better that Jane actually decided to keep sitting next to her, it made Felix feel a little better. Reading is fun, more time to just relax and zone out the world. Bringing her focus back to Jane, Felix looked down at the page, a small smile on her face. A few thoughts passed, but Felix tried her best not to focus on them, rather thinking of a positive, that she will have a friend to sit with. '
Creatures? It's certainly a unique focus, but Felix figured it was her love, much like spells was to Felix. Humming softly, Felix read over the pages that Jane pointed to, taking mental notes of her favorite creatures and what not. It was interesting to say the least, at least there was a new subject for Felix to read in her spare time.
"Oh no need to apologize for something you love. I find it nice that you have something love deeply." Felix replied, chuckling a little as she played a strand of her hair. "Are you more on the side for caring for the creatures or studying them from afar?" Felix asked, a little curious to what Jane's reply would be. Felix was taking any chance to keep Jane with her and not scare her away. While Felix was not overly interested in magic creatures, she would gladly listen to whoever was, it was always nice to hear other people's interests and stories.

"Oh, definitely caring for them," Jane answered quickly, not needing to think on her answer. "My mother is a veterinarian, so I got to help her take care of animals all the time. But," she paused, gesturing towards her book. "None of them were like this. My mother's a muggle, so I guess you could say I have experience with muggle-creatures," she laughed.
Jane had to admit, she loved talking about creatures, magical or not, and it was really nice that someone was taking the time to listen to her. It was interesting to Jane, this girl was being very kind, listening to what she had to say whether or not she was genuinely interested. Why would people not want to talk to her? If it was for a reason superficial as outward appearance, Jane would be completely appalled and disgusted. She would go straight to one of their prefects and talk to them about it. No one deserved to shunned, especially if it was for something as silly as looks.
"So," Jane started back up, pulling off her reading glasses and securing them in a pocket in her robe. "I've talked your ear off about something I like. What do you like?"
Jane was honestly very curious as to how the girl would respond. Did her odd looks contribute anything to her personality and interests? Jane doubted it, but she was intrigued nonetheless.

Dinner for one?
Felix smiled, seeing how passionate Jane was about animals. Felix just wished she could find a passion like that some day, it was quite nice. Hearing that her Mother was a muggle, explained the passion, but it did not deter Felix at all. Even if she was a Pure-Blood, Felix saw no reason to be rude to anyone other than that 'status' it was a complete waste of time in her opinion. From Felix's experience, she has met very few "mud-bloods" and those rare chances of muggles having magical ancestry. But in the times she has, they were only to 'view' their life, not like her parents really approved of them anyway. Glancing around a little, Felix took in there were more students starting to file in, meaning dinner would officially commence soon, but Felix knew there would be plenty of time to talk to Jane.
Focusing again, Felix gave a bit of a smile. "Oh, I don't mind listening. I'm use to listening to people talk all the time, it's nice you have something that you adore." Felix began to comment, her head tilting a little. "What do I like? Spells mainly, have always adored them. Even from a young age, but..." Felix was internally judging whether or not she should tell Jane or not. But from how nice and trusting Jane seemed so far, Felix decided she would take the chance. Moving a little closer, Felix held her gaze on her hands.
"But I am cautious around any wand that isn't mine. You see, I, when I was younger, I stole my Father's wand. Just to play with it a little. My family is quite known in the Ministry, all Ravenclaw's to be exact. So, I have had an upper hand in life, I even know spells I'm not meant to know." Felix began, her voice a little softer. She just hoped she was making the right choice. "So I began casting spells, but as you know, no wand works unless it is yours. So a spell back fired, causing my left eye to go white and my right to have a pink tint to it. Because of that, my Mother dyed and hexed my hair, so that it will stay this color. She says it looks nice but I think it's a permanent reminder to what I did." By the end of her 'story', Felix looked cautiously to Jane, her true skin showing. She wanted someone to trust and Felix believed Jane was that person.

Dinner for one?
Jane had listened intently to Felix give her account, and she found herself feeling an immense amount of pity for the girl. Jane had known about magic her entire life, her father mentioning it on and off, but it was never something that she truly cared about. She was much more interested in her mother's line of work. Considering this, she couldn't really imagine trying to cast a spell before she got to Hogwarts. And her mother? Would any mother really do that to a child as a punishment? She truly hoped not for Felix's sake.
Unsure of how to respond, she heard herself simply mumble, "Oh."
The sound of others' voices had grown louder around them, and Jane realized that suppertime was fast-approaching. She grabbed her book and set it on the seat next to her before pulling her plate in front of her and waiting for it be filled.
"I'm really sorry," she continued after a moment, turning to face Felix again. "I wish that hadn't happened to you."
Jane hated to see people feeling so down, so she tried fervently to think of a way to change the subject, her brow furrowing in thought.
"Oh," she whispered in victory, having finally thought of something to say.
"You said your family are Ravenclaws? My dad is a Ravenclaw too! Isn't it funny that we both ended up in Hufflepuff?" she asked excitedly.

Dinner for one?
When Felix heard her response, she just nodded slightly, sitting a little straighter to look ahead at the other tables. It wasn't the best story in the world, but it was what happened to her, at least someone knew, which made Felix feel a little better. Sometimes she wished she lived a different life, but she wouldn't be who she is without the events she lived through. Hearing the voices, Felix smiled a little, grabbing a plate as well as she spared a glance around. There were alot of students, all from First to Seventh year. It was a little daunting but Felix knew she would be able to handle it well enough.
Looking over to Jane, Felix gave a warm smile, shrugging a little. "No need to be sorry. Isn't there a muggle saying, um, curiosity killed the cat?" Felix questioned, not trying to be rude by using the - in her opinion - disgusting term but she couldn't think of anything else in the moment. At the silence, Felix fiddled with her fork, twirling it into the table to pass the time. Facing Jane again, Felix felt a little happier from the excitement coming off of the other. "Isn't it truly ironic?" Felix replied, feeling happier now. "Possibly our Father's knew each other? Though, in his time, my Father was probably seen as a snobby Ravenclaw, so I wish to be the bubbly Hufflepuff." Felix commented, chuckling softly before she heard everyone begin to go silent. Guess it was time to the pre-dinner announcements.

Dinner for one?
Jane laughed with Felix, also finding the irony in their situation. As the Great Hall quieted, the two of them also turned to listen to whatever was said by the Headmaster. Personally, she wasn't very interested in what he had to say, being much more focused on the fact that missing lunch was a mistake and her stomach wasn't letting her forget it.
She hoped no one would hear her growling stomach in the relative quietness of the Great Hall. As the man standing at the front wrapped up his announcements, meals suddenly appeared on the golden plates sitting in front of every student. That was something Jane didn't think she would ever get used to. Her family never used magic, and the convenience of it baffled her sometimes. Perhaps she could convince her father to cook dinner like this sometimes? She knew her mother would appreciate that. She'd have to write about that in her next letter.
Jane gazed down hungrily at the food that had filled her plate, her eyes going first to the large turkey leg. She quickly grabbed it up with two hands and began taking huge bites. After a few minutes, she realized she wasn't necessarily being ladylike and gingerly placed the thing back on her plate. She sheepishly looked over at Felix, a bit embarrassed. "Sorry," she mumbled, picking up a napkin and wiping her face. "I skipped lunch today."
