Renée and her parents arrived at Platform 9¾ with 20 minutes to spare before last call. Elanor Danvers, Renée's mother, led the way down the platform, heels clicking on the stone as they hurried along. Theodore Danvers, her father, was beside the young girl as she pushed her cart of belongings along behind her mother. He kept a hand on Renée's shoulder as they walked, making sure she wouldn't lag behind as she trotted to keep up with her parents long strides.
They had gone through the barrier as a group and emerged onto a heaving platform and Renée's eyes roamed this way and that as she took it all in.

Renée hadn't known what to wear for the occasion, but her mother had picked her something out. Now Renée wore a light grey shirt beneath a black dress, she had thin black tights on beneath, with knee high white socks over those and her freshly polished black mary janes on her feet. Her hair was pulled up into a messy pony, held in place with a white scrunchie. In all, she looked like a miniature of her mother, minus the older womans dark hair, which fell in waves to her hips. Renée got her blonde tresses from her father, whose own blonde hair was slicked back neatly. Her parents looked dressed to kill, with her father in a dark grey suit with a crisp shirt and stunning silver and jade cufflinks while her mother wore a long black dress with a green blazer to cover her arms. She wished she knew why they insisted on looking so formal, but she couldn't deny they held power dressed this way, people couldn't help but look...

Her parents stopped before an open door and closed ranks around Renée, who straightened her posture as she regarded them silently. Her father gave a small nod, never one to give away too much emotion, glancing at the silver watch on his wrist for possibly the hundredth time that morning.
"Try to write home to your mother regularly" He muttered, turning to glance off down the platform with a look of mild distaste. Elanor supressed a huff at her husbands behaviour before taking Renée's hands and smiling at her daughter fondly.
"Please do write, but have fun too. These will be some of the best years of your life love. I do hope you make some nice friends, and don't worry too much about the sorting, I'll be proud of you no matter where they put you" Her mother then pulled her into a hug and smoothed out Renée's golden hair before pressing a kiss to the top of her head and releasing her.
Withdrawing from her mother's embrace, Renée nodded to both her parents and grabbed her trunk of belongings. "Don't worry, I'll make you both proud!" She smiled at them both, though her father barely looked back at her as she made her way towards the steps of the train.

A whistle blew somewhere further down the platform and Renée rushed to tug her trunk up the steps and into the carriage. Hoisting the trunk up onto a luggage rack as the doors closed, she spun round to lean out the window and wave at her parents. The train then gave a hearty whistle as she began to pull out of the station, hundreds of other first years rushing to wave at their families as Renée drew back to find a seat.
She was lucky enough to find an empty compartment, which she gratefully slipped into. Sighing as she dropped into one of the bench seats, she pulled the small handbag from round herself which held her Wand, her coin purse and a book she was currently reading. She pulled the book out and leant back in the seat, propping her feet up at the other end of the bench as she flicked the book open and started to read.

The Journey Begins Closed
Valarie was led by her parents and elder sister through the crowed train station. Her sister, Adeline, dragged her through a gap in the crowd- just a few feet away from platform 9 and 3/4. Valarie’s mother stopped her before she could grab a cart for her single bag.
“Please be careful,” she said, wiping a tear from her eye.
“Good luck, Valarie!” Shouted her sister as both girls grabbed a cart to set their luggage on.
“Bye everyone!” She called. The train was busy and crowed. Valarie looked around everywhere to find an open seat. All of her friends were in a different part of the train. Valarie looked everywhere, trying to find an open spot. Adeline had found a spot a while back with other sixth years. Finally, she found an open seat. She quickly sat down. Valarie reached down to grab a book from her bag. She clutched the book tightly. She gazed out the window as the train began to roll out of the station. She fussed with her braid that her sister had helped her do for her first day. Her curly light brown hair seemed oddly much longer. The rolling green hillsides were so beautiful and reminded her of her grandparents home in Scotland. Valarie leaned her head against the window and couldn’t help but think back to how happy her sister was when she came home for the summer and she wonder if she would make as many happy memories as Adeline, or if she could make more.

Renée glanced up from her bood, peering over the edge at the newcomer to the compartment, drawing her knees closer as she watched the girl. She watched as the other girl withdrew a book of her own and a smile crept over her face as she sat herself up slightly more.

"Hi... Whatcha reading?" The blonde asked, sticking a finger between the pages of her book and closing it, so she wouldn't lose her place, but could talk to the newcomer. "I'm Renée by the way" She added with a gentle smile, drumming her fingers absently on the cover of her book.

She knew she'd wanted peace to read, and that her new companion would probably like the same, considering she'd withdrawn her own book, but the socialite in Ren was eager to make friends and a fellow bookworm could be a wonderful first friend.

"I'm really fond of muggle fiction books... This ones really interesting-" Ren had never realised she would be so talkative, but after so long of being without friends, she couldn't seem to stop herself from talking... She only hoped it wouldn't put the other girl off. "-It's about this girl who falls in love with death, who's like a real person... it's kinda hard to explain... sorry, I'm rambling... "

Valarie look led up to see a blonde girl with a book of her own, watching her.
“Oh um Wonder,” she said pointing to the book the girl asked her about.
“And I’m Valarie. Nice to meet you Renée.”
She noticed the girl had a book of her own. She pointed to the book Renée was holding. Renée moved on to explain her own book, a muggle fiction like her own. Valarie’s mother had also tried to get her to read more books on wizardry or witchcraft but muggle fiction had also been more appealing to Valarie. Especially works of fiction. The thrills of fantasy, the twists and turns of science fiction, the sad backstories of realistic fiction. It was nice to have someone to talk to. Especially a fellow reader. Back home, most of her friends hadn’t enjoyed reading as much as Valarie. Both of her parents weren’t big on reading either. The only other person she had grown up with that enjoyed reading was her sister. Maybe Renée could be her first Hogwarts friend, she thought. A small smile appeared on her face. In a way, Renée reminded her of her sister. Adeline always was the first to say something to someone she didn’t know and Renée had been the first to say hello to her on her journey to Hogwarts. Maybe Renée was the friend she needed.

Renée grinned as the girl spoke up, pointing to her book and telling her the title. Wonder... Renée had seen the book's cover before, but hadn't read it herself. She didn't know much about the plot either, but she hoped the girl might explain for her, as she as trying to explain her own story.
"Sounds interesting, you'll have to tell me about it... Might be good for me to read" She said with a soft smile "Nice to meet you too Valarie!" She added, shifting on the bench till she was sat in a more normal position.

Renée was a fan of fantasy, with it's portrayals of magic and mythical creatures... It was interesting how many muggles came close to truth in their tales, some even had all the lore for certain creatures down to the tiniest details.
The blonde replaced the thin bookmark she had, into the book in her hands before setting it on the bench as she leaned forwards slightly.
"So... where'd you come from? I live out in the fens personally... I've never really known any other witches or wizards my age, cause we lived in a muggle village " Ren glanced out the window at the passing hills as she spoke.

“Oh I’m from Glasgow, Scotland. I’m a Pureblood so I’ve know about witches and wizards my whole life,” Valarie explained with a smile. She lifted up the sky blue book with the silhouette of a boy’s head.
“And Wonder is really good. It’s realistic fiction which isn’t really as good as fantasy or science fiction but it’s still good.” Wonder had to be a favorite of Valarie’s. Despite the fact she didn’t enjoy realistic fiction as much as she loved muggle fantasy or science fiction, the story of being different had always reminded Valarie of herself. After all, she is a witch. She was also used to her sister being perfect, getting the best grades, making the most friends, everything she was able to do exceeded her parents expectations by so much. When it came to Valarie…yes she did get good grades but she didn’t easily make friends…but now that she had met Renée maybe it would be easier to make friends. Her friends from back home in Glasgow were similar to Renée but in a way, Renée seemed…Valarie couldn’t name what it was about Renée that made her seem nicer or have more in common with her. After all, they both liked books, they were both witches. Valarie had no doubt they could be friends.

Renée listened intently as Valarie spoke, nodding when she said she was from Scotland, and that she was pure blood. Her father would approve at least… not that blood status mattered to Ren.
The book sounded interesting, as Renée didn’t have much experience of realistic fiction. She made a note to add it to her list of books to have a look at.

Realistic fiction… so it’s just about regular muggles? No magic or princesses or whatever… sounds interesting. ” Of course, Renée knew there were other genres beyond her beloved fantasy, but she’d never really considered them. Though only because she’d seen no need to.

So…what house do you think they might put you in?” Renée was fairly sure she knew where she’d end up, like her parents before her, she was destined to be a Slytherin. Of course the hat might surprise her, but she doubted she’d fit in anywhere else… that and her parents would be mortified if she didn’t get into Slytherin.
Renée wasn’t sure if other families put the same amount of pressure on their children to be sorted into the houses they were in as children, but she’d overheard some of the other kids on the platform discussing the sorting ceremony and assumed it was a fairly big deal for some people…

After Renée asked her what house she thought that she might be in, she froze. Her mother was Hufflepuff, her father a Gryffindor, her sister a Slytherin, so Valarie had no clue what house she could possibly be. She had a fair shot at all. Personality wise, she’d most likely get Hufflepuff but when it came to intelligence, she’d almost one hundred percent get Ravenclaw. She mastered other languages, read several books that had at least nine hundred pages, she understood complex math, she was probably a Ravenclaw.
“Oh I don’t really know…I have a fair shot at all….” She moved onto explaining her parents’ houses along with her sister’s and how she could get any.
“But the one I’m really hoping for is Ravenclaw. It’s the only one none of my immediate family was is so I think it would be cool to be the only person in my family kn Ravenclaw. Plus, I have a lot of the traits so maybe I’ll get lucky and get Ravenclaw!” She exclaimed joyfully.
“Which one do you want? And which one do you think is most similar to you?” Valarie asked, excited to learn more about her new friend- her first Hogwarts friend.

Renée smiled as Valarie explained that she figured she had a shot at being placed in any house, and that her family had all been in different houses. The blonde couldn't quite understand that, since her parents often made it feel like she only had one real choice, and that any other option wouldn't be tolerated. She was reminiscing on this when Valarie mentioned that she was hoping for Ravenclaw, her attention returning to the present so she could smile along with the other girls excitement.

"Oh nice, yeah I bet you'd fit in nicely there... And to be the only Ravenclaw in the family would be fun?" Renée glanced out the window as she pondered the return question, because in truth she'd never considered which house she would want to be in if the choice was hers...
Turning back from the window she gave Valarie a smile and shrugged.

"It'll probable be Slytherin for me, it's my parents house and I've never thought of being part of any other house... I think I'd be happy there, I've heard Slytherin prides itself on ambition, which I think I have in abundance" She admitted "Do you think we're far from the school now?" She asked, glancing out the window again as they sped through a tunnel, and the compartment was flooded with darkness, before they emerged on the other side and the light returned.

Renée explained how she is most likely a Slytherin. Valarie couldn’t believe she hadn’t thought of being in an another house other than her family’s. Valarie’s parents had always told her what house she gets, they would always love and accept her. Valarie gazed through the window, pondering what to think of Renée’s Slytherin traits. Despite the fact her sister was a Slytherin, her parents hadn’t always spoke highly of the house. Valarie choose to ignore her parent’s warning of not trusting Slytherin.
“Who knows, you could be Hufflepuff for all you know!” Giggled Valarie. The train ducked under a tunnel and when they emerged Renée asked her if she thought they were close. A huge structure in the distance glinted into view.
“Yes, I think we are,” murmured Valarie. She couldn’t believe that after years of hearing about how much her mother, father, and sister loved it, it was now her turn to experience the wonder of magic outside of her cozy home back in Glasgow. Even though Valarie had grown up surrounded by wizards and witches, she still couldn’t really wrap the thought around her head that she would be going to a school, filled to the brim with young wizards and witches. But her journey was just at its start.
