Sitting in the chair at a table - alone, thankfully - the black-haired eleven year old stares down at the empty parchment, quill, and black ink well. He closes his eyes. He had promised her, he had. But it's hard to write when you know your father will read the letter.
His father's a perfectionist, and he - although he doesn't harm his children, his youngest son still fears him.
Steve closes his blue-grey eyes as he sighs. Dipping the quill into the well, he draws a small symbol in the corner of the parchment. Labeling the date, he begins to write - in Russian, of course, for it's all his mother knows how to read.
Здесь в школе хорошо - я встречал некоторых людей - okay, Steve admits to himself, that part's a lie - и относятся ко мне хорошо.
He smiles to himself as he signs his name on the parchment. He glances up and stares at the person who sat down at the other side of the table - how did Steve not realize that this intruder sat down near him?

The library was an amazing place in the eyes of John. Towering bookcases as far as the eye can see covering topics so specific that anyone could fins what they were looking for here. It was safe to say it was one of John’s favorite places.
It was a quiet place where the only sounds gracing the air were the sounds of quills and the occasional turning of a page. John wasn’t one to complain though, he liked the quiet. He had spent hours in here just enjoying it.
Today the Library was pretty populated. That wasn’t uncommon midday but it still wasn’t entirely welcome. This meant that finding a private seating location would prove to be difficult for John. Looking around would tell him that finding someplace away form human interaction would be near impossible. That left plan B, find somewhere with people who probably wouldn’t notice his presence. Another quick sweep of the room left him with a couple of options.
A group of 3rd years talking about quidditch. (not a topic John was interested in hearing at the moment.)
Some 5th years practicing transfiguration. (the notion of being any where near that put the fear of god into John’s soul.)
And finally, a black haired first year who seemed to be writing a letter. (that would have to do.)
The boy looked kind of menacing with his red eyes and menacing facial structure. But, it was either him or who knows how long enduring quidditch talk. John made his way over the table that the red eyed boy was at careful not to make to much noise. He sat down as quietly as he could and pulled out the book he had decided upon reading.
John barely had time to finish a page when he looked up and met red eyes.

The red eyes just stare. And stare. They don't stop until the boy blinks. This intruder is also a Gryffindor. The black hared boy watches the other person before he dips his head to stare at the letter.
"Hallo." Steve Falenwolfe says, and stands. He holds his hand out curtly. "I'm Steve Falenwolfe." He says under his breath.
Yes, he'd rather be alone, but he'd rather not pass up the opportunity to talk to someone about the Gryffindors and the rest of the school. As a first year student, he is awfully curious about this entire place. His father went here and told him that he 'loved' this place and stayed until his graduation. But it's not like Steve has a choice - if he wants to do anything with his life, he's got to go through this.
Glancing at the intruder, Steve waits for his response.
"Ну ответишь? Ты вообще ЖИВ? Ты здесь? Боже." Steve glares down at the person. He then sighs. "Я не могу поверить, что я разговариваю с другим человеком, как это."
Removing a sheet of parchment, be begins to write again.
"Идеал. Просто чертовски идеально! Как только я подумал, что я один, я заметил — как ни странно — что передо мной кто-то есть. Как я не понял его раньше? Я предполагаю, что либо я слепну, либо он молчит, либо он может телепортироваться, что, я считаю, невозможно." As he writes, he mutters what he writes.

John’s brain had faltered when Steve had stood up. The guy was more menacing when actually giving you attention. It didn’t last long though as he said something in another language then sat back down and continued to mutter in said language.
John knew he had heard that dialect before now only if he could put his finger on it. It was a gruff language that seemed to have a decent amount of r rolling. Oh, it was Russian! It was hard to mistake the language when it was used a lot in pop culture.
“Was that Russian?” John asked trying to get the attention Steve. “I’m John by the way, John Penton.”
John had managed not to stutter over his words. Not to say that it wasn’t difficult though. Steve’s aura made anything other than looking away a challenge but John was a Gryffindor. If he couldn’t endure this than he would have shamed his house.
“I don’t think red eyes are genetic. Are you wearing contacts?” John asked. “Wait never mind not important. Back to the topic at hand, are you Russian by any chance?”
John’s curiosity had overtaken his fear of Steve. Later he would probably berate himself for being so stupid in front of such a terrifying person but right know all he could think about was Russian culture.

"Да, It is. And you know this how?" He inquires as he looks the other Gryffindor up and down. He seems... frightened. "Какой трус." He mutters under his breath as he begins to write on the parchment. Such a beautiful sound.
He glares down at the paper again. Steve closes his red eyes at John's other question. "Нет, I don't wear contacts. Of course I do, what a stupid question." He huffs as he stops his writing and glances up to glare darkly at John Penton. Contempt fills him.
"Не может человек когда-либо написать своей семье, не беспокоясь." He says as he places his quill down beside his ink well. He sits up straight and looks across -a long with down - at John Penton with contempt.
'I'm going to have a problem with this guy if he says something not-so-good about us Russians.' He thinks to himself as he crosses his arms over his chest arrogantly.
"Please tell me that you do not have a problem with Russians. Because we're going to have a problem if you do." He says dismissively.

“Oh no! I don’t have any problem!” John worryingly exclaimed. “I just haven’t met anyone that is Russian before.”
‘not that I talk to people enough to know their heritage.’ He thinks to himself.
“I’ve just heard your language used in pop culture and the such.” John said. “It isn’t hard to recognize it.”
Steve was obviously a little terrifying but John couldn’t just walk away. He had already started the conversation and walking away would be even more cowardly than he already is. John wasn’t going to back down no matter how much he really wanted to. Sure, Steve was a little cold but then again everyone is, kind of.
“So, uh what’s the magical community like in Russia.” John asked pulling out a small leather-bound book and a quill. “I’m a muggleborn so I don’t know much about the magical community outside of England.”
John dipped his quill into some ink and looked at Steve expectantly. It wasn’t often that he had someone to answer his questions about the magical world and he would be insane to let this kind of thing go now. So, what he was a terrifying person that looked like his glare could kill. Knowledge was knowledge.

"Не слишком здорово. Stalin didn't like wizards too well." The Russian says and glances at the parchment. Great. A journalist. He thinks to himself as he closes his eyes and takes a breath. Okay, this is going to get real annoying real fast if Steve doesn't find a way to leave. But he is curious of about this person's heritage.
"And you? I am interested in other countries as well." He says, but his voice is void of emotions. He has never found another person like him who is curious about other places until now, and he is ready to learn. Pulling out another sheet of parchment and his quill, Steve Falenwolfe stares John down with the German glare that he inherited with his father.
"I grew up in Volgograd - once called Stalingrad, as you can tell, named after Stalin himself. It's a nice city on the Volga River - one of the largest rivers in the world. When I was there it wasn't too bad because Stalin's dead, but the current... President also doesn't like wizards and witches too much. My father's family lived in England to get away from it all, and my dad was accepted into Hogwarts. He met my mother when he returned to Russia." Steve doesn't point out that his father is a перфекционист - perfectionist - and he had his family move to Wales after Steve's 'Incident of Accidental Magic' so he'd also be sent to Hogwarts.
"I grew up in Wales from eight to eleven. And I hated it. My brothers were so angry they picked on me all the time." No friends or anything from Wales, he was often seen as too hostile for friends. And he was fine with that - at least the cretins wouldn't bother him. But he still misses his Russian pals - Aleksandr, Fyodor, Oleg, and Sasha. Although he's unused to attention, he doesn't mind it too much - especially when people wanted to talk about his homeland.
"There's this saying 'For Mother Russia' because Russia is known as the Motherland, and Germany is the Fatherland - but you knew that, right?" Steve raises an eyebrow. Most scholars should know that if they read enough texts and such. But with a short scoffing laugh, Steve shakes his head. "Most people don't even know who the last Tsar was. Nor do they know that Russians(Soviets) fought the Germans in World War Two along with America, and many other countries. Do you realize how annoying it is when people think that we Russians are the criminals, the bad guys all the time?"
It makes him so angry that people always think that because Russia did this, or Russia did that - that they're the bad guys, when in reality, they're just following orders from someone higher up. With an unshakable loyalty to Russia, Steve would do almost anything to return to his home in Volgograd - where he could continue to speak in his native tongue and not be looked at strangely.

“While I can’t say anything about always being seen as a bad guy, I can at least empathize.” John said momentarily putting down his book and quill. “I was originally from America and everyone from there is pretty much viewed as uncultured.”
John picked backed up his book to write a few extra things down. “I’m still getting used to England. I’ve been here for at least 3 years and I can honestly say it’s a big difference from America.” John had finished up his final bit of writing and started to tuck his book and quill into his cloak.
“I think it’s crazy how short-sighted people can be when judging based on heritage.” John sighed. “And here I thought the wizarding world would be without such prejudice.”
The sudden shock of being thrust upon this world had completely thrown the topic from John’s mind. Of course, it was the same in the wizarding community. We were all human beings and we know no different than to fight over the most insignificant things. It was this kind of thing that made books so much better. They served as an escape from this flawed society, they allowed anyone to live out their deepest fantasies without any fear of what will be there when they comeback.
But that also meant that books were lies. They sold fake freedom for those willing to get lost within the pages.

Steve cannot reply - he had a feeling that this person was from America. He's grateful that he's never been, because people'd likely do their best to kill him. Maybe. He's currently unsure, though.
I guess all people go through different things. he thinks to himself with a look down a his parchment as he waits for Penton to say something else about his country. Until he realizes that he may be uncomfortable.
Since when do you care who's uncomfortable? He cannot help but think to himself and he leans back to glare at the highest shelf that he can see. Now he's angry, but he decides to hold it in.
"We wizards aren't welcome in Russia too much, but I still love it there. I'd rather be there than here because I grew up there and had some friends." He says as he begins to write something on the parchment.
"Would you by any chance know how to speak Russian or German?" He inquires with a raised brow.
"Ich habe noch nie mit einem Amerika gesprochen." He says, then tilts his head. "Ich kann diese Sprache verstehen, aber ich kann sie nicht gut sprechen... Obwohl ich anderthalb Jahre in Deutschland gelebt habe."

John was thoroughly shocked as of now. Steve had just spoken a third fluent language.
“No, I can only understand English.” John said still a little shocked. “But I’ve been debating learning a new language.”
John was now fully intrigued by the Russian boy. He was fluent in three languages so far, he seemed as if he had many stories to tell and he might be able to teach John about the wizarding world from a unbiased point of view.
“I haven’t been to any country other than America and England so I haven’t found what language would be best suited for me.” John continued. “Now that I’m hearing it Russian or German sounds like real contenders.”
John didn’t know what it was about the languages but hearing them spoken aloud had sparked his interest. Both German and Russian had a kind of power behind them. Almost as if the language itself was made to be intimidating. John couldn’t help but thinking that this was something that he needed. It could help his self esteem at the very least. Speaking either language could also help his future.
“I might look into learning one of them.” John said coming to a decision. “I’m a bit of a bookworm myself do it might do me some good finding something to research."
