... moderation will follow ...
Dmitri breathed in, taking in the sights and sounds of this year's Dueling Championship. Yet another set of duels he had to moderate, and yet another wave of students causing magical harm against their fellow students—just the way he liked it.
This time, he had to handle a match between Hufflepuff and Ravenclaw. Right at the beginning of the school year, some adjustments were implemented to level out the playing field for everyone involved, and the Slytherin Captain simply cannot wait to see where this batch of duels will take themselves.
"Alright! You all know the drill!" He'd enunciate clearly, making sure every single one of the participants was able to hear. "Keep it clean and simple. Let's hope, in the three years that I've been captain, this doesn't become the one year I get to curse any of you for cheating."
Raising his arm, he'd state, "Wands at the ready...." With a slice of his hand downwards, everyone in the room would be able to hear his "Begin!"

Ravenclaw vs. Hufflepuff: Match 2

Dealla was tired and she looked it, too, pale face and dark circles beneath her eyes. Sleep hadn't been very restful lately, not since she'd woken from her bout of unconsciousness - a coma, she'd been told. To her it had been replaying nightmares, over and over, for weeks. Pictures she still saw when she closed her eyes, flesh writhing in the dark, a grotesque figure walking, dragging.
But taking it easy was not a part of her vocabulary, so here she was, two weeks later, stepping onto the duelling stage. The atmosphere at least was familiar at this point, almost comforting. The rush of excitement in her veins that she expected would always accompany her duels. There was still something off about it, a slight dissonant twang every time she remembered that while she was still duelling, she was not captain of her team anymore. It hadn't been long since she had stepped down, in a bitter, spiteful reaction that she wasn't quite sure if she regretted. Most of the time since she'd spent asleep, dreaming dark dreams. There hadn't been the time to get used to it yet. Frankly, she should probably be grateful to be duelling at all despite missing three weeks of practice leading up to this day.
Which didn't mean she wasn't going to kick some badger butt today, of course. She forced a smile for Callie as she hopped onto the stage, trying to mimic her usual energy. The blonde was a very familiar face, they'd spent three years sharing classes and two on the same team, so she was a comfortable presence. Skilled, too, although her magic seemed erratic from time to time. Something Dee had experience with, although obsessive practice had helped some with that.
She waved across the stage at Logan and Dorion, who had left for summer break as Willow and returned with a different name, something that Dee couldn't really claim to understand but accepted. If they were happier for it, it must be the right thing... although she'd be lying if she claimed that some part of her brain wasn't bursting with curiosity and questions. Some other day, perhaps.
Clasping her hands behind her back and straightening her arms to loosen up her shoulders, she gave her fellow duellists a more genuine grin, cheeky at the edges and brightening up her eyes. "Good luck!" she called over to the Hufflepuffs. Despite it all, she was feeling good about this, about duelling in general, about this duel in particular. So much that was out of her reach, but here, she was in control. "Not that it will help you, but I hope you'll put up a good fight!"
She rolled her wrist, then offered Callie a fist to bump. "Let's get them."

There had been a major dry spell in wins, one that had been broken last year by Lydia and Lea in the last stages. Slytherin and Gryffindor had gone on to participate in the summer games, ones that Dori wasn't even there to witness as they were having a gender crisis at home in Willen. It was almost painful to step onto the piste at this point. Their first duel ever with May Moonstar, they had won against Opeila and Adonis. Then it was them and Martyna Romero up against (ironically enough), Callie Jensen and Thomas Baines. That was the first loss of many. A loss to Galton and Meenauh was next, then to Santario and Sarah, to Cade and Delilah, the last one to Alan and Adeline. Five losses. One win. It was a miracle that Dori had become a captain, let alone still allowed on the team. Every time they watched their partner go down first.
It made them look at Logan with bittersweet eyes. Would being paired with Dori be her downfall? Would she be down within the first six rounds? With the duels being more well balanced than before, they hoped not. But still. Dee was a powerful witch, and they had already lost to Callie once. They twirled their wand nervously in hand. They returned Dee's wave, feeling a little squeamish about the duel. Was it illegal to vomit just because of nerves? Would they be eliminated? They couldn't muster up a comeback to Dee without worrying about projectile vomiting instead. Dori looked over at Logan, nodding their head before saying probably the most inspirational thing they could. "Can't do worse than we have!" Ugh, what a captain. Their eyes briefly scanned over the stands, seeing Flash up there to cheer them on. At least they couldn't disappoint him worse than they had in the past.

Logan could not say she was excited for the duels, to be honest she was the complete opposite. After having been thrown around by Gryffindor in the last duel, the girl was terrified of letting down her house by not actually being able to do anything. Hoping it would calm her nerves, the girl had downed a cup of coffee earlier in the morning...then another before the duel. At this point the teen was bouncing on her heals, nervous still, but felt much more awake than she had before. Standing on the stage beside Dorian, who Logan thought looked a bit nervous, she gave a, hopefully, confident grin to her partner.
The Hufflepuff girl was not completely sure how she felt about this duel, would they win would they not. Hufflepuff was known to not have a good streak when it came to winning with dueling so Logan was not going to be too disappoint if they lost again. Yes, she would feel like she let down her house, she always would, but there was not much she could do about it. Seeing one of the Ravenclaw duelers waving, Logan waved back. Dealla, if Logan remembered correctly was one and she could not quite remember the name of the other. "We will be fine Dorian," Logan muttered to the other Hufflepuff, "I have won against Ravenclaw before...not these two specifically but still." The Hufflepuff with the pink hair did not want her captain to feel too bad about this duel if things went wrong.

Ravenclaw vs. Hufflepuff: Match 2
Callie had gotten herself into a bit of a routine and with duelling season coming back around she was more than happy for a break from the mundane. Yet despite her excitement she couldn’t quite shake her fear of her unintentional habit of failing spectacularly. The poor girl had been hit with her own spell more times than she was willing to count. Surely she was better than this? Right? Maybe? Probably not.
Callie gave her teammate a thumbs up accompanied by her usual toothy grin all whilst rocking back and forth on the balls of her feet. It didn’t take words to convey her excitement. Her face was proof enough.

Everything was peaceful one moment, and the next was just absolute chaos.
So much wind converging in one area does that. Dorion, Dealla, and Callie all let loose multiple bouts of wind from each of their wands, conjuring tempests onto the dueling stage with varying degrees of success. Dmitri was sure there were at least three people blown out of their seats in the audience. As for him, a stray lock of hair blew out of place and he couldn't help but growl in irritation.
Blowing his wayward bangs off of his face, the Slytherin captain was just able to catch Logan being the only one to not hit an opponent this time.
Things were off to a great start, he thought to himself as he rolled his eyes.

Ravenclaw vs. Hufflepuff: Match 2
Logan groaned as she watched her spell miss, meanwhile she was being hit with winds from all directions. "Can someone just let us win for once," the girl muttered to herself in frustration as she stumbled slightly from the force of the winds. Could someone just let Hufflepuff win for once as luck seemed to never be on their side. Maybe they would get lucky, but at the moment it seemed that the Hufflepuff duo were not going to do to well. The girl only hoped that the match would not end in only a couple of rounds.

Ravenclaw vs. Hufflepuff: Match 2

Dealla got barely a wave and not a word at all from the Hufflepuffs, and her lips twisted into a disappointed pout. So it was going to be one of those duels, huh, where everyone morosely cast their spells and didn't utter any words, much less banter. Fine, if that's how they wanted it; it wouldn't do them any good. History showed Dee was less likely to mess up when left to focus on her casting.
The duel started, and a moment later, the stage was engulfed in storm winds, whipping into every direction, more than there had any right to be between four duellists, and Logan hadn't even opted for a wind jinx. There was one blast that came close to hitting her before she twisted to the side, and she thought part of the wind that she was responsible for had made contact, but with the chaotic swirling of air, it was hard to tell. The first exchange of spells had shocked her fully awake, the sharp taste of the competition chasing away her exhaustion. She'd danced her own way between the gusts of wind, untouched; the others seemed to have fared less well, and especially Logan seemed to be buffeted by some rather rough winds.
Even then, her ponytail whipped around her face in the winds, pulling at the fabric of her clothes, and Dee couldn't help but laugh a little. "Nice, Callie!" she exclaimed. "Wasn't aware we were trying to summon a tornado, but this is an interesting little experiment." She turned her grin to Dorion and Logan across the stage. "Makes sense that eagles are better suited to navigate winds than badgers are, don't you think?"

Well if that didn’t wake Callie up, nothing would. The girl couldn’t help but grin at the impromptu tornado even if she was caught in the middle of it. Thankfully she wasn’t too distraught at the now awful state of her hair and instead found herself entirely focused on the matter at hand. With the wind swirling around the place she couldn’t string together a reply to her partner other than a very enthusiastic thumbs up in clear agreement.

Dori's jaw seemed to tighten up as the spells flew across the duelling piste. For once they were able to hit someone, and while their wind jinx didn't split it still felt good to hit Callie (sorry). They heard Logan get hit not once but twice as they got hit with a wind jinx themselves. They bit down a curse. "It's the first round. We'll be ok." Their eyes narrowed at Dee when she commented about badgers and their inability to fly. The other duellists really saw them as a laughing stock didn't they? There was a pang of hurt in their heart at the comment, the desire to retort died in their throat with the thought of losing and having all of their words thrown come crashing down on them when they were lying awake in the hospital wing later.
