Basic Ballroom Dance Lessons Year 1. Closed

It was a day as any other and Simon had finished up any pending assignments and decided he would treat himself with a trip to one of his favorite places within the walls of Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry. The Rehearsal Room.

A room filled with a large arched windows, the silver bird encompassed chandelier in the middle of the room. The portraits, always pleasing to the performer or the musician inside, offering up an encouraging smile or joyful applause. The one thing that made the Rehearsal Room the best though, was the piano over in the corner. Always perfectly in tune, it awaited him when he needed it the most. Simon Kincaid at times was a poet, but not in the literary sense or through word, but through music and melody. There were times he needed to express himself in ways that words failed him and the piano offered him the ability for such translation.

He entered through the heavy wooden doors and paused, not expecting to see the room all laid out for what seemed to be some sort of event. That was okay, he could come back another time. He gave a kind smile to the only other person in the room. "Forgive my intrusion," he said, speaking up so that he did not startle her. He came over to where she was, just curious as to what she was conducting here because it was all thought out quite well. He wouldn't stay long but badgers were inquisitive. "What'cha got going on here?"

"What'cha got going on here?"

Harmonia turned slightly to the voice that was near her now. " Oh hello, I'm sorry, I didn't hear you come in!" she replied, looming him over he was taller then her, like everyone else around here, he was clearly a hufflepuff. Then she actually thpught about what he said. " I assume you missed my sign, next to the door. Well since the Blossom ball is just around the corner, I figured not everyone has parents that can afford to teach them basic ballroom dance, so I'll be offering it free of charge, I think everyone should attend the ball." she explained, gesturing to the rest of the room.

Usually Harmonia was quite shy around new people, but music and dance, mostly music, is who she is, here she actually had confidence in.

" And I'm not just teaching, I can act as a practice partner, or if you already have a date you two could practice while I play." she continued, looking back to the older boy before a shocked expression popped onto her face. " I'm terribly sorry for my rudeness, I haven't introduce myself, I am Harmonia Melodius, it a pleasure to meet you, Mr...." she trailed off to allow him to introduce himself.

"I think everyone should attend the ball too," he smiled brightly, liking her thoughts. Simon would assume that she came from either a pureblood aristocratic background or maybe perhaps a muggle background but from a family that was rather well off. He knew girls back home in London that took ballet and so forth but not ones that were skilled in the art of ballroom dancing. It was super nice of this girl to be sharing her knowledge and hoping to help her fellow students. Harmonia seemed to be a very selfless and giving person and Simon liked that.

He stepped back, still facing her as she spoke but distancing himself until he got to the large wooden doors and then peeked out to read her sign. He then made sure to read the other signs around and saw that she was saving up for a ferret. He'd have to give her a donation on that when he was done there, even if he didn't partake in the lessons himself.

"That's super nice of you and a great idea. I would think many would be rather shy to make the jump to actual ballroom dancing. I know some waltzes and a few other of the dances, that is, if it's similar in the muggle world. My Aunt Maggie taught me."

She introduced herself as Harmonia Melodius and he couldn't think of a cooler name. For someone like Simon, who music was the essence of who they were and drove him, it was absolutely fantastic. "Nice to meet you, Harmonia. I'm Simon. Simon Kincaid." He hoped she wouldn't continue with the Mr. part, as he really was only a little older than she was. He wanted her to feel comfortable with him and that he was an equal. They were just both students at this crazy wonderful magical school.

"Can I do anything to help? I can play the piano." He had since he was four and honestly, it was practically an extension of himself by now. "Not too bad at dancing either."

Her smile grew a bit at him agreeing with her reason for hosting this. As a first year she has 2-3 class periods other then study hall, so why not use it to help people." Though, I've just started it so I dont have any students yet."

" I'm a pureblood, I don't actually know that much about muggles as well, except that they don't know magic exists and I learn in Tranfiguration that muggles discovered everything is made out of thinks called atoms."

Harmonia at how joyful he was, he is a huffelpuff." Its a pleasure to meet you, as well." she replied, when he said he would help in anyway he can." Well as it happens I'm in a bit of a problem, I seriously doubt a fifth year or higher would want to dance with a preteen girl, or if someone is too tall to dance with a below average height." She said with chuckle." Considering your stature, are you a third or fourth year?" she remarked walking to the record player and getting it ready." Then if you would like to dance.... I would like to know how well you know the steps and it will pass the time."

"Second Year, but I've always been rather tall for my age." Simon now was pretty sure that was the dhampir nature in him. Back in London, before all this magic business, he didn't know that. He thought he had some genetic condition that made him have aversion to sunlight and that was that. Now he knew better.

Although sometimes he wished he didn't.

"But yeah, yeah, I don't mind taking on some if needed and you know what? Even if you don't get any takers for some reason, you can strengthen your skills with me." He said as he joined her at the gramophone. It was old, but he knew it worked well because he had been in this room so many days and nights of his time at Hogwarts. It was one of his absolute favorites. "My mum was a Gryffindor but she passed away long ago. I unfortunately don't remember her. Not telling you for sympathy points, but to rather state that I grew up without any knowledge of magic at all. So, I'm halfb..." he paused, making sure he didn't say the wrong taboo sort of word of halfbreed, "I'm halfblood, but I grew up as a muggle."

He gave her a smile though, liking the idea of starting a dance to see how well they did. Maybe he could use a bit of refreshing. She was the instructor here today and therefore the master. "Shall you lead and I follow or shall I lead and you follow?" he asked as he extended his hand out for her to take in a gentleman-like sort of way.

Harmonia was impressed by his height for a second year." I'm sorry to hear that, I still have both my mother and father... though..." she still can't speak about it to anyone, how lonely she felt, how she felt like she was trapped... and she was.

Well if he thought she would reject his help if she was a bloodpurist, well she wasn't. "A halfblood, but raised as muggle. Well I'm actually interested in muggles. I don't particularly care if I'm a pureblood or not, I like to follow my own tune." she smiled at her own joke, she thought it was bad, but she didn't care.

Harmonia set the record to play, the plain grooves in the beginning giving time to prepare. She took his hand and place her hand on his should her taking her place to begin." Mine leading would work if I was teaching, so you will lead." She was excited this was the first time she would dance with someone that wasnt a complete narcissist.



She had decided to use Waltz of the Flower, found it fitting for the upcoming Blossom Ball. It also well recognized in both muggles and wizards.

"The Nutcracker," Simon said, smiling as he recognized the song right away. "Every Christmas my aunt and I get tickets." Did she know it was from The Nutcracker? He wasn't sure what purebloods knew about the muggle word and what transcended throughout both cultures. Still, she knew the song and that was something.

He brought his hands where they needed to be and gave Harmonia a kind smile. This was going to be fun and he was glad he stopped by the Rehearsal Room that particular evening.

"Alright, here we go. And...now," he said, leading her a little into the waltz. He stepped forward on his right foot so that she could step backward on her left. He then took a quarter turn to the left and continued from there. It was rather nice to know that she said that the waltz was pretty much universal so he didn't feel he was doing it wrong.

"How am I doing, Professor?" he asked. She was the instructor here for the evening and even if he had offered to help her, he was still just the assistant. It was she, Harmonia Melodius, that was the master. Still, as they began to move about the floor underneath the large chandelier, neither one of them was falling down or stepping on each other's feet. That was a good sign.

She nodded her head as he lead her into the steps, allowing him and the music to take her. He was doing great, no toes stepped on and no stumbling. He was quite humble he was better then he thinks.

" Tchaikovsky, its along with a few others from the play are greatly known, both by muggles and wizards, though I could only get my hands on information about the Play in general. Sadly, like many artist, musicians, etc, he died before his work became well known."

Harmonia felt elated as she glide across the rehearsal room with new found partner, the room spun around them. Small moments like this make a difference in peoples worlds. They my not know each other, but they are connecting with dance. The world outside this room no longer mattered, just two partners.

" How am I doing, Professor?" he asked earning a soft pink dusting of a blush on her cheeks." You're doing quite well, considering you have yet to step on my steel toed boots, Mr. Kincaid. she replied raising an eyebrew with a grin, she had been wearing steel toed boots and was still dancing.

He looked down to her shoes, thinking steel toed ones were a rather good idea. He had worn them - once, when the threat of a cow trampling his feet was at risk. "I'd say you've got quite the attention to detail, Professor Melodius. I can't think of a thing you didn't think of." And that was a compliment but also the absolute truth. He couldn't remember if she had said or not but he was thinking perhaps she was a Ravenclaw - creative mind and well thought out.

The music continued and so did their dance. Simon could tell that she had danced quite often as this was something that seemed to come second nature to her, as it did him. Maybe there were places where it could be perfected (as he himself never had any official dance lessons) but it still would have passed for quite a good show even in pureblood standards.

As the song ended, he stepped back and presented her with a bow to thank her non-verbally for the dance and then walked to the gramophone to lift the needle. He wondered, if by dancing, she had caught on to any of the signs of his dhampir self - the overly pale skin, the cold to the touch body temperature. She didn't seem apprehensive though and that was good. He worried about it because of all the bad publicity that halfbreeds were getting in both the school newspaper, The Hogwarts Headliner, and also in The Daily Prophet. Coming out and having people know you were a dhampir these days was quite off-putting to many. Maybe Harmonia was too smart for that and understood past prejudice.

"So you seem quite musically inclined," he said as he turned around to her. "What other talents do you hold besides dancing?" He was curious as to what other music related things she enjoyed. Music was a driving force of his as well.
