2022, Stage 2 Gryffindor vs. Slytherin: Match 4

As her name was called, Starlee took her place on the piste opposite the Gryffindors. She was thankful this time she wouldn't be facing another friend, but one of the opponents standing across from her made her uneasy. Flashbacks to her first duel, in which they lost, flooded her mind, and Starlee was the clear easy target for the pair. A first year against two older students seemed hardly fair at the time. This was not the best mindset to be in for this. Why hadn't she prepared herself better? Shoving those thoughts aside, she tried to think of the positives. She was a year older now, a year better, and more spells in her arsenal. Plus, at least this time their opposing team seemed more even, as she vaguely recognized the second year across from her from lessons. This wouldn't be so bad, an even matchup. She could do this.

Taking a deep breath, she would nod to Illowy, hoping that she was showing signs of moderate confidence, and not the unease of loosing to Gryffindor again that she felt inside. She would raise her wand in preparation for her third duel.

Adeline couldn’t help but roll her eyes as she watched the Ravenclaw boy walk up onto the stage.

“Really, this guy again?” she whispered over to Katrina. Their previous duel had not exactly been pleasant, and Addie was less than happy to be reminded of her own shortcomings. She had been weak before—incapable of landing her attacks and barely agile enough to slip past many of her opponents’ spells—but that wouldn’t be the case this time.

She was ready to go, ready to see the progress she’d made—ready to crush the Slytherins they were up against.

“I’d wish you luck,” Addie jeered to the two girls on the other side of the stage, “but I don’t want you to win.”

A look of pure joy and slight smugness crossed Adeline’s face as her heart started beating faster and louder. This time, instead of trying to dispel the nervous energy, she welcomed the adrenaline, and hoped to channel it in her favor.

Round 1

There were a whole lot of swings this round, and a whole lot of misses as well. Katrina failed to act at all, standing still as apparently the match's beginning evaded her. Adeline cast Wingardium Leviosa flawlessly, or perhaps even beyond flawlessly, but her opponent Illowy escaped the Gryffindor's cast with some high tier evasion.

Starlee's spell met a similar fate as her opponent's. As if Adeline had some sort of sixth sense, she was able to avoid the Incendio Duo with some expert dodging of her own. Illowy, the fourth year Slytherin, was the only duelist to find success this round, and she disarmed Katrina, her wand flying a good ways away.

A wry smile broke out on Tom's face, recognizing the strategy that the Slytherins were employing. He wondered if the Gryffindors were experiencing deja vu.

Deep breath in, deep breath out, and... "Incendio!" she yelled, her eyes fixed on the second year Gryffindor. While having terrible aim was something Starlee was certainly used to, this seemed... different. Almost as if the second year saw it coming, or perhaps she was just that good at dodging. Whatever the case, she didn't have time to dwell on it, as she braved herself for a hit that never came.
She glanced at Illowy, who seemed unaffected by the spell that was sent her way, but her spell landed perfectly on Walker, who was now left without their wand. 'Yes!' she thought, internally motioning a fist into the air. She expected no less of Illowy, and now it was time to get down to buisness.

As Addie watched the younger of her opponents send a spell in her direction, she smirked slightly, gracefully spinning in order to dodge the attack. A small amount of pride welled up inside of Adeline, and aiming her wand toward the other girl, the incantation “Wingardium Leviosa” simply rolled off the tongue, the swish and flick perfect and precise.

However, with the same ease and dexterity she had employed to elude her opponent’s attack, her intended target was able to avoid the levitation charm.

Out of the corner of her eye, Addie could see Katrina’s wand shoot out of her hand, just like it had several times in the previous match.

Not again… she thought with a hint of disappointment. If they were going to win this match, they’d need to gain control of the stage, and to do that, both of them would need their wands.

Action: Owled

The start of another duel, Katrina readied herself, spinning her wand in her hand as she approached the pedestal. In a flurry of motion it began, her opponents, both of which she recognized, Illowy and Starlee. Adeline was again at her side and this time Katrina really felt she owed her dueling partner a win. Though this would arguably be a tougher match than their last which hadn't gone well.

Katrina was confidant this time that she could secure a win despite the odds. She prepped herself for her first action, realizing she was somehow a step behind everyone else. Then before she could actually do anything of importance, her wand shot out of her hand. Seriously?!

Round 2

Every single spell cast that round failed to reach their target, much to the moderator's chagrin. Thomas only just managed to suppress an eyeroll at the fact. Starlee's Incendio Duo and Illowy's Ventus were both cast perfectly, but they both met the same fate as Adeline dodged them both. Perhaps the Gryffindor was too focused on her feats of agility, as Adeline failed to connect her Flipendo with the intended tartget, Starlee.

At least Katrina found her wand.

"Mind the time," Thomas reminded the duellists, as not a single spell that could do any great harm to their opponents had managed to hit home thus far.
