Interacting with @Hugh Lowe
19th of August 2021
There were a few days left till the broom racing event that she was incredibly excited about. The past few weeks had several ups and downs. There were good moments of hanging out with friends, having fun and just enjoying herself. However, there were also some worse moments - like the recent incident that affected several of her campmates - or some personal things. Broom racing, however, was something she was looking forward to.

It had been a year since she stopped playing Quidditch. In a way, she missed it. Quite a lot. She loved flying through the sky, she loved spinning around in the air or playing with her teammates. Not only was it fun but she was good at it. Like actually good at something. It was rare for her to be so good at something but she was. She had helped her team win every single game she had played. Of course, she heavily relied on them too and it was not just an individual win. It was very much because of their incredible teamwork. But she had contributed every single time, she had felt useful. She felt special when she played, as though she was leaving a legacy. Broom racing was not something she was particularly skilled in but she missed being up in the air and it seemed like a sport worth trying.

Sitting against a tree, Serena was surrounded by some pieces of clothing. Some gloves, a pair of boots, some bits of metal and so on. Her father had helped her to make some of it, others were unfinished work that she had been working on before she arrived at summer camp. With her knees up, she was scribbling into a large A4 pad that was on her lap. She had some muggle pencils that she was using for this purpose, sketching away as she sat there overlooking the lake.

There were some loose bits of parchment too, that were held down by a paperweight. The paperweight was a small box that contained a golden snitch within it. Pizza Rat was resting on top of a metal knee pad, snuggled on the inside of it. A Silver Arrow lay there too.

An apple flew through the air. Tracing a vertically linear path before it landed back in the oversized palm of the wandering part-giant. Hugh's teeth dug into the fruit as his gaze slowly scanned the perimeter of the campgrounds. There weren't many people out as far as he could see. Things seemed to have calmed down for now, not too hard to figure with a break going on. There weren't any major events happening as far as he could recall. And if he had forgotten any of them, he surely wouldn't have been present anyway.

Hugh was a boy that preferred to stay away from the crowds. Sticking out like a sore thumb would do that for a kid that did not want to gather unwanted attention or long stares with confused glances of foreigners trying to figure out how Hogwarts students dealt with seeing people like him every day. It made him wonder just how many of his kind even got a chance to learn at the other schools. Then again, maybe there really were just this little of his kind. A handful? Less? He couldn't tell, which was an alarming thing to him.

Walking past one tree, he caught the silhouette of a figure in the corner of his eye. She wasn't hard to recognize at all, in fact, it seemed like she hadn't grown at all since last they spoke. Another person doomed to be small forever, it seemed. It was, however, the intensity of their last conversation that had Hugh stop in his track. Stopping midway his next bite into the apple, he slowly turned his head to see if she had noticed his presence. Luckily for him, she had not. With large and slow steps, the part-giant would scurry backwards to try and get away from a confrontation.

BAM! His foot had caught a root of the tree, tripping the massive figure in return. Hugh felt his balance shift and couldn't interfere in time. With a loud thud, he'd fall onto his back, smacking his head against the ground. "Ow!" He growled as his hand reached upwards. The lines in his face folded into a grimace. "Of course you fall, you bumbling blithering bastard..."

A frown appeared on her face as she fell into thought. There had to be a way to improve this design, right? Of course, there was. However, she just could not think of it. Pressing the pencil down on the paper, she scribbled another couple of lines before crossing something out. This was not exactly working... Perhaps if she tried changing it... Holding the page, she turned it. Turning it did not really help but she was attempting to 'look at it from another angle' as though that would help. With fresh eyes or whatever. That sort of thing.

Lost in thought, she was very distracted by the designs on the page and the thought of creating cool new armour. Her father would be so proud of her if she managed to make something in the term and brought it home to show him! How cool would that be? Though, she had no idea what she would even make or how she would make it. But that was literally what she was working on right now, after all.

At least, it was until she got caught by a loud sound. A gasp escaped her, as she almost screamed. Her body literally jumped, her chest pounding suddenly from the loud noise that caught her attention. Did something fall- no, someone. Blinking, she noticed a rather large student had fallen not too far from her. He seemed to be grumbling about something, not moving. Wait- was he unable to get up? In a panic, she quickly put her page down, dropping it and throwing something on it as she stood up, rushing up to him.

"Hey - are you alright?! Are you hurt? Do you need a hand?" Serena started spewing out questions. She had no idea how she would help him - especially if he wanted a hand up, could she really even help him to get up? Nonetheless, she offered her hand and would pull with all of her might if he accepted.

Memories of when she last met the boy had not come to mind. In fact, she was paying very little attention to who he was. He looked so different that she kind of did not really think about it. He was just some rather tall guy - who was not Quinn. That was kind of all she really thought about.

If he did not move, she would start leaning down as though to check for blood or anything near his head, in case he hit it. Frowning, she stared at him, hoping he was alright. A look of pure concern and genuine worry was plastered on her face the entire time as she tried to assist him.

"Obviously I'm not." Hugh sighed with his eyes closed, his face still grimacing from the collision. "Do you realize how far down my head has to fall to meet the ground?" One eye opened up and locked itself onto the little girl. He knew very well who she was, by now he could have been halfway across the campgrounds had he not fallen to his demise. With a slow growling noise, the part-giant rolled to his side and crawled back up on his feet.

He dusted off the bits he could, but there was no doubt some of these marks were sticking on. His hair was a mess, though his general appearance gave the impression that this might have changed little from the ordinary. "Not that I don't appreciate the concern, of course." He added swiftly after finally giving Serena a clear look. She did not seem to directly recognize him, which was ironic to this situation, he felt. "It's Hugh, by the way... We met years ago." Reintroducing himself seemed silly to him, but it was the most obvious route to take. "Though I guess that meeting wasn't one of the finest. You were mad about the Paracel- Para- You know, the Gryffindor dude you were mad at. Stupid long wizardly name." Hugh didn't even recall what the whole damn thing was she got upset with.

"Anyway... Sorry to interrupt..." He looked over at her stuff and shot her an inquisitive look. "Whatever all that is."

"I- N-no, I don't... Sorry..." She mumbled, feeling bad for asking stupid questions. She really had no idea how it felt to faceplant into the ground at that height - and she now knew that she never would. Her dreams of even getting to six foot were squashed over a year ago. He seemed to be able to get up fine though and did not appear to be bleeding or anything, which was always a positive.

Serena blinked as he said his name. Hugh. Should she know it? They met years ago? She was pretty sure she would recall meeting someone that tall! When did- oh. Right. Paracelsus Adgar Myth. Literally years ago. She had managed to successfully avoid getting into a confrontation with him and the rumours that he had spread seemed to have faded by now.

Frowning in confusion for a few moments, it was clear that she was trying to remember him. It did her a few moments later. She recalled the meeting after Hugh reminded her. It was just after she found that the masked student was her own friend and he had been responsible for pushing the Gryffindor into her, and the whole start of all of the rumours, she presumed. Though she had no idea why that Paracelsus (also known as that Parasite) was told. But she assumed it was them gossiping in the dorms or something since it only seemed to be Gryffindor boys that were scared she was going to give them all cooties.

She scratched the back of her head awkwardly, "Paracelsus Adgar Myth. He spread... rumours about me. I remember," She responded in a grumble, "Sorry... I... had a lot going on then... I- ah, you don't really care for the whole story, do you?" She continued, recalling that she got mad at him when he seemed to believe the rumours. She had started to repeat the incident but it dawned on her that he probably did not care what her excuse was. Serena had been upset about the whole situation with Ben and Siege and it didn't help. "They still aren't true, mind you! The rumours, I mean..." She added as an afterthought, feeling the need to clarify.

Glancing over her shoulder towards the stuff he had pointed at, "Oh, it's fine. I was just drawing some designs. I want to start broom racing and figured, I probably could use a helmet or something, you know?" Before she smiled, "In case I fall to the ground, you know?" She was clearly teasing a little as a joke but she had no idea if he would take it as such.

In her defense, she played quidditch in the past so maybe she did know how it felt to fall to the ground!

“You're right. I don't.” Hugh declared without looking at the older girl. Only when she claimed the old rumours to not be true, he'd give her a look that said “uh-huh”. The giant shrugged and let the topic slide. It wasn't for him to judge her on that, and it very well might be true. Though the way she kept defending herself, something definitely had to have happened. But people were allowed their own little secrets, and could believe whatever they wanted themselves to be.

Designs, however? Broom racing? Hugh's brow arched upwards in surprise. Not about the broom racing bit, Serena was pretty famous by now as having a good track record in Quidditch. As Hufflepuff's former seeker, she ought to be pretty fast and agile on a broom. Even her size would likely prove her to be more aerodynamic as well as unnoticeable. But the designs, that's what caught him by surprise.

“What do you mean by designs? Are you into fashion or something?” He asked to clarify. Was Serena the kind that wanted to draw attention to herself by wearing a sparkly dress on top of a broom? Some sort of glittery presence that could blind her opponents in the sun. He hated the idea already. His mouth would narrow into a mere slit of annoyance as he expected it all to be true. Hugh hated arrogance and egocentrism.

Then again, she did mention the helmet. Which left him with confusion. “A helmet, you say? Like, a leather one? Why don't you just use the Quidditch ones?” So she worked in leather now? Where was she finding all those materials? The giant's face turned into a brooding one as he gathered a million questions and kept them in reserve until he got a reply on his first ones. No point in barraging the little girl with curiosity. Though she did manage to get his attention, surprisingly.

Serena twiddled her fingers awkwardly, as it looked like she was crazy and Hugh was not buying it. She was being honest though but she had no idea how to convince him. Sighing softly, she decided that there was just no point in explaining it. Besides, who cares what he thought! She knew the truth! Grumble, grumble. Despite the thoughts, she looked a bit awkward and just stared at the ground.

"Fashion?" She repeated as she looked down at her own outfit. She was dressed so casually, in a pair of shorts and a red t-shirt. Was that fashionable? She did not really know, "I wouldn't say I know anything about fashion," Serena admitted as she tugged on the bottom of her t-shirt that was slightly too big for her. Perhaps one or two sizes too big. Her mother said she would grow into it... years ago... She never really did but it was pretty comfortable so she wore it.

Hugh seemed vaguely interested in the conversation though, so Serena continued - mostly because she was really excited to share this with someone and he was the only one here asking questions, "No no! I was thinking like a proper one. The leather ones aren't super protective, you know? I really like Headmaster Lear's armour so was thinking something like that," Serena continued as she practically ran back to her pile of stuff, as she moved to the sketches and rooted through them quickly - clearly looking for something.

"Something like this!" She showed him, holding up a sketch of some medieval helmets that fully covered a person's face, leaving only some eye slits. "I was thinking of trying to make it in metal but like... I'm not really sure how to make it yet but I'll get there, one day! Just uh trying to do some designs first," Serena rambled on, waving the page around. She was clearly way too excited.

Pausing for a moment, she tilted her head as she looked up to the sky. She wiggled her nose in thought as she pondered on something for a few moments. It was clear she was thinking by the fact that she went quiet. "Though, you know what? Maybe armour should be fashionable..." She mumbled as though that made perfect sense and everyone should consider armour fashion.

Hugh gave Serena a long, quiet stare as she rattled off her on her own. “Right…” He said, hiding a grin he felt burning under his pouting lips. He nodded along as she showed him some of her designs. “Oh, right. That looks nice.” He wasn't sure how she expected him to react, at the very least he'd agree she was doing a pretty good job on the designs.

“Armour like Lear, huh?” Hugh imagined the shiny golden bucket of bolts the headmaster normally wore. “You can always just give him a bucket dripped in gold paint. Should do the trick well enough. He looks loose enough in the head to pull one off.” The giant looked into the distance as he imagined the complete image in his head. It wasn't half bad.

“Could you make full suits then? With what materials exactly? It's not like Hogwarts has a blacksmith ready to give you supplies or show you the ropes?” He crossed his arms and leaned against the tree, which bent a little under his weight. “Or do you have some kind of background then? From your goblin friends?” Hugh tried to figure out in his head if he'd seen a blacksmith in his mother's tribe. He figured they weren't so big on professions back there. Even though a smithy would involve just as much hammering as getting your hands on decent food required within the encampment. “My family isn't too big on fashion, I'm sure our people have very different tastes…”

"I- Wh- I'm not giving him a frickin' bucket in gold!" Serena responded, as she imagined the image of it. She burst into laughter thinking about it. It seemed so funny, "He would need bucket eye holes, oh gosh, that- that's so funny," She continued, laughing way too much on the topic as though she was hit by the tickling charm. The goblin clutched her stomach a little after a few moments, after succeeding to get the words out of her mouth during her laughter. Alright, the Headmaster could probably pull it off but that seemed so much less cool than his current armour, which was pretty glorious - worthy of a true knight!

It took a solid minute or two of her just giggling her head off in front of the guy, bending over in hysterical laughter as she tried to calm down. "Oh, gosh," She continued, panting as she managed to try and stop laughing, catching her breath once more. There was a bit of water at the corners of her eyes as she was clearly about to burst into laughter once more.

Sitting down, since she had almost fallen over from laughing too hard anyway, Serena looked up at him as he continued to ask questions. The grin remained fixed on her face as she heard the words that he said - showing an interest in what she was doing. It faded only when she heard the word goblin.

Like an arrow to the heart, her smile dropped off her face and the happy carefree attitude that she had for the past couple of minutes - after they had moved on from the awkward rumour stuff - quickly dissipated like it never even existed. It faded quickly, her eyes looking around awkwardly as she tried to find a way to respond. "My... goblin friends?" She asked him, after a few moments of silence, trying to see what he actually meant by those words. Perhaps she was overthinking this. Perhaps there was a very obvious reference he was implying by that and she just... was not aware of it. He was not talking about her heritage, right? He had not noticed... right? She swallowed, hesitantly looking up to see his reaction to it, "What do you mean?"

Hugh gave her a look that would only scream 'unimpressed' by the fact, his one eyebrow arched upwards in doubt of her not understanding his question. “You just seemed like the type.” His eyes never moved off her face. He practically dared her to tell him he was wrong. Not that he had anything to be mad for, her reaction was… amusing him? He hadn't really thought about it himself. It just slipped off his tongue. Now, he was thinking a lot more about it. She was practically a midget, and that for being older than himself. Not that he should stand for any measurement.

“Don't tell me you don't have any friends?” Was a thing he asked out loud, though. Mentally tapping himself on the nose as he realized the crudeness of his inquiry. It wouldn't be him if he didn't let it just fly past the room, though. He'd make no effort to try to save his reputation, its absence being the most important reason. He knew himself as a loner, aside from one walking nuisance that followed him everywhere. And he didn't mean his cat with that.

“You're not giggling all of a sudden, so what's wrong? Feeling sick all of a sudden? The heat can be a mean thing to deal with.” He nodded to himself, as if he naturally projected the confidence of an entire briefing room filled with researchers taking notes in agreements. The kind that like to cough before they talk, makes it easier to take ten-second pauses between each sentence to make sure the other "slower" colleagues could follow.
