Soon to be Study Time with @Haley Rose
The house system in Hogwarts was never officially meant to segregate students but in essence that is exactly what it did. Simon was able to see his fellow Hufflepuff badgers in class, the dormitory, and the Common Room, where he could only see those in other houses at certain times. That is why he and Haley Rose often met up in the Library. It gave them the opportunity to work on their assignments for class as well as spend some time together and spending time with Haley was the highlight of his days.
That afternoon classes had ended and he came to the library to find a spot. He knew he had a little bit of research to do on an Herbology paper so they needed one of the tables that particular day. Usually they had a small alcove of comfy chairs but he knew Haley wouldn’t mind sacrificing having to sit in one of the wooden chairs.
One table near the entrance to the Library was relatively empty, with the exception of a couple abandoned papers left behind by the person who occupied the space before him. Simon placed down his school bag so that Haley would know where to sit if she came in while he was gone and he left to go search the Herbology section for some books on his topic.

Revelations
Waiting for @Simon Kincaid's returnHaley packed her bag full of all the papers she would need for today and there were many. She still had to do the History of Magic and Potions homework and write an essay for Defense against the dark arts. Potions and Defense against the dark arts would not be a problem for her, but History of Magic she had been putting off for far too long. She loved to learn more about this world but the Goblin Rebellions just didn't interest her as much as the other subjects. But she had to get through that today and so she made her way to the library.
Even though she would spend the next few hours doing a lot of homework, she smiled broadly on the way down. And it wasn't because of the homework, of course, but because of the fact that she would be spending this time with Simon and she always looked forward to that. Because the two of them unfortunately didn't share the same common room, they often met in the library and studied together or did their homework. And even though these were not special meetings, Haley always looked forward to them because she had Simon near her during these times.
Arriving in front of the library, she went through the door and could quickly see the seat occupied by Simon. She put her bag down next to Simon's and was glad that they were sitting at one of those tables today. Haley had a lot to do today and even though these seats were less fancy and comfortable, they were better to work more concentrated. She now set off to pull a book on the Goblin Rebellions from the shelves and scattered unmotivated through the aisles of the library until she found what she was looking for.
Back at the table, there was still no sign of Simon and she suspected he also had a lot things to do today. She took her papers out of her bag and dropped the bag on the floor beside her. She sorted the papers that lay on the table and put them in a pile. She didn't know if they were Simon's, so she left them near his bag. As she did so, she noticed a newspaper lying at the top of the pile of papers and became curious. This one was older, as the date told her, and she wondered what Simon wanted with it. But it could also be from a student who had been here before them and so she paid no further attention to it.
She opened her book and was quickly engrossed in her History of Magic homework and blanked out the world around her.

Library finds with @Haley Rose
When he made his return, he was carrying a stack of books that would most likely be a little too heavy for the average first year student but it also wasn't far out of the realm of normal so it wouldn't seem that distracting to the wandering eye. He saw Haley at the table and smiled, slowing his pace and making sure to be quiet with his footsteps. Arriving at the table, he leaned in to give her a quick soft kiss before coming to sit on the chair beside her. "Hey, you. Hope you don't mind if I sit here," he said, playing as if she was some casual acquaintance instead of his girlfriend.
Simon smiled as he opened up the back of the first book to the index where he looked where to find information on Puffapods - page 119. He was to describe what they were, where to find them, where to grow them, how to replant them, how to make them flourish, and what they were used for. It wasn't exactly the most exciting assignment he had received in Herbology that year but he still wanted to do his best.
He was well more than halfway through his assignment when his mind started to wander. The current book was talking about protective gloves and how dragon hide was always the best when he closed that book and moved it aside, pushing about some of the scattered papers on the table around with it.
The workspace was messy and that was no way to properly conduct a study session. Simon stood up to stack the books that he would return to the shelves of the Herbology section and then began to stack up the papers that were there before him into one neat pile.
It was then that he saw an older edition of the school's newspaper, The Hogwarts Headliner, among the papers. It was the November 2020 edition, open to page 9 which displayed a bit of overflow from an article about the Hogwarts house quidditch teams and featured an article titled "Dhampir: docile or dangerous."
Simon had a list of things he wanted to discover about the magical world since he first attended Hogwarts. How were the moving portraits created? What information could he learn about the founders of Hogwarts? What other wizarding schools were out there? Did wizards have any impact with the daily life of muggles when war was concerned or health threats like cancer and pandemics? The list went on. On that list he had also researched elves and pixies, hinkypunks and giants, unicorns and werewolves. Still to be researched on that list were vampires, dhampirs, and an assortment of other things that he thought might be too dark to venture into just yet. Baby steps.
But here it was before him. An article about dhampirs. From his understanding, this was someone who was half vampire, who still sought out the need for human blood. ...Blood. Just the thought of it made his stomach seem to turn. Simon began to read the article. It began by saying that it was clear that Hogwarts wasn't as safe as everyone was lead to believe because inhuman creatures of the nights walked among the student body. The article was quite swayed, he could tell that already. He had learned that werewolves had a way to control themselves and therefore be safe amongst the population at Hogwarts and surely dhampirs were the same.
The article then tried to back up how dangerous these creatures were by claiming that everyone must know how to spot a dhampir among them and that got Simon curious. What could be different about them than anyone else if they were half human? He read on.
Pale skin.
That wasn't quite fair to place pale skin on the list because a lot of people had pale skin by nature. Genetics. Sometimes it was other reasons all together like himself. He remained almost always indoors and therefore was pale.
Canines - retractable teeth.
Simon brushed his tongue along the right side of his mouth where those particular teeth would be. Wait, what did it mean by retractable? He kept his at a usual length because it looked normal from everyone he had ever seen in person or in pictures but couldn't everyone control that?
Eyes, any color and look black in the darkness.
That wasn't fair. One's pupils grew larger in the darkness to catch any available light to them. It was normal.
Easily sunburned and may find direct sunlight painful.
Okay, but there he was with Xeroderma Pigmentosum, a rare genetic disorder that didn't let him go outside without being easily sunburned and feeling direct sunlight painful.
May lose control at sight or smell of blood.
Blood. The mere mention of it made him have that sensation every time. Every. Single. Time.
He didn't say a word as he grabbed his stack of Herbology books and went back to reshelve them and when he returned to the table he had books about dhampirs with him.
The Complete Guide to the World of the Undead.
Vampires and Dhampirs: The Truth
The Secret History of Vampires: Their Multiple Forms and Hidden Purposes
The Vampire: His Kith and Kin
He began to open them to read more about the dhampir. Faster movements, increased strength, stronger fingernails.
"This...is ridiculous," he said and laughed, but it wasn't a fun easy going laugh that normally came from Simon Kincaid. He was trying to convince himself that he was putting more into the situation than what really was there, but it was an uneasy laugh. He couldn't even quite convince himself...because all the signs were there.

What's going on in your mind? @Simon KincaidHaley was so engrossed in her homework that she didn't notice Simon approaching until he was right next to her and gave her a kiss before sitting down next to her. A smile immediately formed on her lips "Oh no. Please, sit down." Played Haley, pretending the boy who had just kissed her was a stranger and started laughing. She loved these little games and jokes between them. As much as she would have preferred to do something with Simon, there was no time for that at the moment and they both quickly became engrossed in their books.
Gobblin rebellions and Werewolves. Ludo Bagman. Godric Gryffindor's sword and so on and so on. Haley flipped through the book, went back a few pages, then forward two chapters and back to a previous part. This went on for quite a while until, after what felt like an eternity, she had finally answered all the questions for her homework. She stowed the finished homework in her bag and let out a long sigh. Finally, she thought to herself and was glad to have finished the most annoying task for today.
Next she set to work on the Potions homework and it took her much less time and was much more fun. She didn't have to look up much at all and so she sat at the table, concentrated on her thoughts and wrote and wrote and wrote. In a brief pause for thought, she noticed that Simon was no longer sitting next to her and looked around the library in surprise. She hadn't even noticed that he had got up and smiled at how absorbed she had been in her homework. It wasn't long before Simon came back to the table, again with a pile of books, and Haley looked at him in confusion.
She turned her attention now to Simon and the new books, running her eyes quickly over the book titles. Dhampirs and Vampires. Haley thought about it for a moment. She knew a little about vampires but hardly anything about dhampirs and she wondered what subject it was for, but since Simon was so engrossed in the books, she didn't want to interrupt him now and so she too continued to concentrate on her homework.
A while passed and Haley had almost finished her Potions homework when Simon caught her attention again. She lifted her head and looked at him questioningly, "Mh? What is ridiculos?" she asked him, putting her quill aside. She noticed immediately that something was wrong. Something about Simon was different, his laugh was different and she could see that something was going on inside him. Was something troubling him? Was there something he couldn't understand? Or was it something completely different? Haley couldn't figure it out and hoped Simon would enlighten her in a moment.

Avoidance with @Haley Rose
Simon regretted saying anything at all. It was a heat of the moment sort of mutter, not one he really wanted Haley to hear but it had been said and now she acknowledged it, curious to know why he had said it. "I'm just...letting this get to my head," he said, trying to find some logic and reasoning here to it all.
It was coincidence, that was all. Strange, odd, coincidence.
"I was reading that article in the Hogwarts Headliner about dhampirs and ..." and what? And he went into a quick research spiral to where every book described him perfectly?
"And uh, well, it was interesting," he said, keeping it at that. He really didn't know what else could be said; what else should be said.
It was evident something was wrong and that he was nervous. He didn't want Haley to see him this way. He wanted her to always see the calm and confident Simon Kincaid. "And I found it interesting," he said, able to get out a small smile toward her. "You know, a lot more interesting than puffapods."
Maybe she could chalk it up just thinking that his interest in Herbology was outweighed by Magical Creatures. He wasn't really ready to admit his thoughts because they were absurd and not just a little. There was no way that he was a... a half breed, half a vampire, a dhampir.
He was Simon Kincaid, a boy born and raised in London, England. The only thing that pulled him from a normal human existence was getting his Hogwarts letter and learning he was a wizard. That was where it stopped.

Revelations
I have a strange feeling @Simon KincaidHaley didn't know what it was, but she had a strange feeling. Something about Simon was different, it almost seemed like he was trying to avoid the subject. But why would he do that? They were always honest with each other and could talk about anything. It just didn't make sense to Haley and she suspected she was just misinterpreting it. She picked up the article when Simon mentioned it and quickly skimmed it while continuing to listen to his words.
As she skimmed the article, she didn't notice anything obvious until her gaze lingered on one sentence. Easily sunburned and may find direct sunlight painful. She didn't let on, but she now looked back at Simon and thought about it for a moment. She quickly shook off the thought, which had only been in her head for a moment, and smiled to herself. How could she think of something so insane?
But she couldn't ignore his nervousness and she still had the feeling that there was more to it. Maybe it had nothing to do with this subject and he was trying to cover it up, or maybe she was imagining it. She didn't know. She put the article back to Simon, "Yes, that is indeed interesting." She smiled ever so slightly and a good observer could tell that Haley found something strange about this situation.
But she didn't want to speculate further. Simon knew he could talk to Haley about anything and she didn't want to tell him that again. She knew it, he knew it and she didn't want to put too much into any possible scenarios just because she might be misinterpreting the situation. "Sounds like all dhampirs have Xad, Xer-, well you know, that disease you have. The problem with the sun." She joked now, trying to get her mind back on her homework but finding it harder than before.
She finished Potions, put those papers in her bag too and noticed that Simon still had a strained look on his face. But she decided not to ask for the time being. If something was wrong, he would talk to her. Wouldn't he?
She took his hand and placed a quick kiss on the back of his hand, "Be right back." She spoke quietly so as not to break his concentration and disappeared into the shelves of the library. She gathered a few books for Defence Against the Dark Arts and came back to the table packed with books.

Contemplating with @Haley Rose
When she returned, he was captivated by another book on the subject and his attention was almost fully dedicated to his reading but he was aware that Haley had returned. He could feel this heart race, something that it didn't normally do with his normally slow heart rate. How did he describe the thoughts going through his head?
"You know, I've always perplexed doctors with my lower temperature and slower heart rate," he began. "It was assumed I had that genetic condition because I burn easily in the sun and find sunlight painful, but I was never officially tested for it. I've always been quick, always been strong, and find myself sleeping only about every third or fourth night. None of those things are normal."
He knew the sunlight thing wasn't and he knew the sleeping wasn't. He excelled in the sports he tried back in London because he was quicker and faster so that wasn't the normal.
He knew it wasn't the normal, but that's just how his life seemed to be and he accepted it. Maybe some things were different but he didn't dwell on them - until this moment when it seemed they were all crashing together to draw him to one conclusion.
A dhampir.
A dhampir was the offspring of a human and a vampire. Most likely it was the male that was the vampire and so he thought of the only thing he knew of his father - that his mother felt something just didn't seem right with the relationship and left before even knowing he was conceived. Was it that unsettling aura?
If dhampirs were half human and half vampire, did that make him less than human? What else was he? Was he a monster and it just hadn't fully surfaced yet? So many thoughts were going through his mind.
"There's all these characteristics listed in these books but how do you think someone would know someone was a dhampir for sure?" he asked, truly wanting an answer here. Was there some kind of test? He looked up to Haley finally and it was probably pretty apparent in his eyes that he was scared and sense that she could see that, he looked back down.

Revelations
I have an answer for @Simon KincaidSimon was completely engrossed in his book and Haley wasn't even sure if he had noticed her return. For a brief moment, she looked at him worriedly, but then focused again on the books in front of her. But she could hardly concentrate on her homework. Her thoughts were on Simon and his behaviour, his incredible interest in the subject, which somehow seemed to worry him.
But Simon had definitely noticed that Hale was back at the table. As he began to speak, she looked to him and pondered his words. Could that really be the case? The way he described it - yes. All his symptoms fitted the description of a dhampir and he had never been officially tested. But was it possible to spend 11 years of one's life unaware that one was a dhampir? Certainly, if you didn't know a part of your parents and grew up in the Muggle world. Haley hadn't said anything, but you could clearly tell she was thinking about the possibility.
He hadn't said it yet, but by now Haley understood why he was so interested and what was on his mind. But could it really be that Simon was a dhampir? She didn't know much about it but she was sure she had read that they had fangs and she had never noticed any on Simon. Her eyes wandered to his mouth and she wondered if there were fangs behind those lips that she had just never noticed before.
Haley still couldn't think of anything to say and then Simon asked her a question and for the first time since they had been so engrossed, he looked at her again. And when she looked into his eyes, she didn't see the Simon she usually saw. She couldn't really place it, was it confusion? Was it excitement? Or was it maybe even fear? What she could see, however, was that this was all a bit difficult for him right now, but she was there for him. And she wanted to help him with it, whatever it was. She now reached again to the books and papers that lay in front of Simon and this time not only skimmed the text but read it properly.
And Simon was right, almost everything she could also relate to Simon and now she could understand his state of mind even more. But how could they have found out that he was a dhampir or that it was really just his illness? She was at a loss until she read another sentence, better a specific word.
Haley now lifted her head and looked at Simon, she had an answer to his question, she was sure of it. She just wasn't sure if he would be happy with that answer. "Blood." She now said. That was her answer. That was the easiest and quickest way to find out if this possibility could really be true. "If you want to find out, I guess that's the easiest and quickest way."

Analyzing things with @Haley Rose
Blood.
Even when someone said the name of it or he saw it on tv he got a little odd feeling. It was something he found fascinating and yet that feeling alone drove him away from it. His life he had been lucky enough to not have sustained many big injuries nor had he bared witness to anyone hurt enough for blood to be shed. He had been sheltered from it. Otherwise maybe he would have found out about this many years ago.
Still, how did one know for certain if they were a dhampir with the aspect of blood? Dhampirs drank it to get strength - for nourishment. Simon thought about the way he had always felt hungry. Always. Ever since he could remember. He would try his best to stomach a meal that was very insatiable just to feel hungry still. Constant hunger was a companion of his.
Was it because he craved blood? Needed blood? The thought alone made him feel more like a monster than the claws, the fangs, and all the other characteristics he had read about.
Simon set the book down that was in his hands and sat on the chair at the table, leaning forward though so his head could be in his hands. He didn't like being weak like this in front of others, especially Haley, but he just didn't have the strength right now due to the thoughts that were in his head.
Less than human.
If he was a dhampir, he wasn't fully human. He was less than human. He was part monster that would only strengthen in the years to come.
"Somehow I doubt there's blood hanging around in the Potions storeroom to just take a sip of and see how it goes down," he whispered. Even the notion of it was ridiculous! ...Wasn't it?
Maybe this was the way to find out.

offering help@Simon KincaidHaley didn't know what was going on in Simon's head, but she could tell it was a lot. She didn't really know what to do or what she could have said. She wanted to be there for him, but she didn't even know what was going on inside him. Normally she was the one who needed Simon's emotional support and it was an unusual situation. She had never seen Simon like this before, but she wanted him to know that no matter what, Haley was there for him. Dhampir or not.
As he put his head in his hands, she put her hand on his back, trying to give him some comfort. To show him without words that she is by his side and there for him. Just as he had always been for her. She searched for the right words, but she couldn't find them, so she kept silent and gave Simon her silent support.
At Simon's remark, which was barely audible, Haley had to laugh slightly. He was really confused with his thoughts. "Well, I don't know how well you paid attention in biology class," Haley started to speak and lightly tapped Simon's temple with her index finger, "But here," she pointed her hands down her body and then down Simon's body, "is a running blood bank. So how we get blood, that's really not going to be a problem." She joked, trying to cheer Simon's mood a little.
"Anyway, I think as a dhampir you won't be affected by your own blood but I'm happy to offer myself for science." At that, she shrugged her shoulders briefly. It wasn't a big deal to her, a little cut on the finger and then they could see how Simon reacted to it. Maybe that way he could really find out for sure and wouldn't have to continue living in unknown. Haley would do that for him any time and so it was only natural for her to help Simon.
