After classes
A thick layer of snow had covered the Hogwarts grounds, and little flakes were still drifting down, adding to the collection of tiny frozen crystals making the blanket of white on the school. Rose watched the snowflakes drift down to the ground in a peaceful, calming way. Rose inhaled a deep breath and exhaled slowly. She was sitting at one of the tables of the library. She had a book with her, but she hadn’t read any of it. She hadn’t been able to read much at all since the Holiday Break- the thoughts of her new future step-father as well as her future step-siblings- three of them.

A lot had changed since December. She had been happy and bubbly in December, and this month her mood varied from mad at everyone to anxious and withdrawn. Today was one of her better days, thankfully, and she had chosen today to meet together with one of her best friends at Hogwarts- Aldor Humbleglow They had fallen a little out of touch, but Rose was determined to keep up with him, as she really did care about her Hufflepuff friend, and appreciated his friendship.

So she had invited him to meet her in the library today, and was waiting for him there. He wasn’t late by any means as there wasn’t exactly a certain time she had asked him to meet, her, just a vague time- after classes that day. Rose sat waiting for her friend, lost in thought.

Soon enough, the Hufflepuff boy walked into the library, looking around, as he searched for Rose, he was not feeling very well lately, in fact, if he could, he would've stayed in bed all day, but even for him, Rose was more important than his problems, knowing that, he tried his best to keep a smile on his face, even though it was a bit obvious he was struggling to do so.

Last year he was not able to spend time with his family, of course, family meant it was going to be only his aunt and her neighbors. Aldor had only received nothing else but two letters since the year started. Maybe his aunt was busy, maybe she just forgot, whatever it was, somehow Aldor preffered not to know.

Soon enough, he found his friend and would greet her with a smile, slowly walking up to her. The boy has not changed much, the same messy hair, a tired look in his eyes and somehow, nearly the same height. He already had a book in his hand, but it didn't seem to be like the ones he usually reads, it had a wonderful black cover, with a white dragon drawn on the front, simulating Aldor's favorite species, a set of silver letters spelling ''Aldor Humbleglow'' were written on the spine.

''Hi, Miss Rose- It has been a while.''

Rose still couldn’t help but smile as she spied the blonde boy coming toward her. “Aldor,” she said softly, recognizing him in no time at all. It was clear she was very happy to see him. “Here, you can-” She used one of her feet to spin the chair next to her ninety degrees, and shifted her own chair so the two were roughly facing each other, though still a comfortable distance apart. “-sit if you want,” she offered, tucking both legs under her chair and crossing her ankles.

Rose took to analyzing him, for only a couple of seconds. He looked a lot like he normally did- with his messy hair and his quiet, reserved demeanor. He had only grown a little bit since the last time they had met, which had sadly been too long. He would get his growth spurt soon enough- he might even be taller than Rose. That was how boys and girls worked a lot of the time. He was also holding a book (which wasn’t surprising), but Rose wondered what he was reading. They could talk about that later in their conversation. Anyway, he almost seemed the same, except for- something… something seemed off. Just a little bit different, but Rose couldn’t pin it down. She couldn’t decide what it was, and that wasn’t the best feeling. The feeling that something was wrong, except- except she had no idea what. Did he even need help or was he happier than normal? Was she just being paranoid? Maybe there was nothing to notice anyway?

He also called her “Miss Rose,” which she wasn’t sure what to make of. Maybe he was just making a joke, or maybe he respected her for being older? She didn’t want him to think that- she was only three or four months older than him, not even a year since she had a really late birthday and he had an earlier birthday in the year. She didn’t want him to ever feel inferior to her, even though he probably already did.

“It’s good to see you- thanks for coming,” she said, quieter than usual. Maybe it was just because they were in the library, which is famed for putting pressure on the students to being quiet. Or maybe it was that even though Rose’s voice was always softer than the average person, but on these better days, the days where she wasn’t snapping at everyone, her voice was even lower. “How have you been? It feels like I haven’t seen you in forever.”

He would smile softly as he sat down, facing her, he did his best to keep smilling, as he placed the book he was carrying on his lap. He did not seem nearly as anxious as he usually did, as he managed to make eye contact since she turned to him. He took a deep breath as he locked his fingers together, thinking about how stupid he must have looked calling her ''Miss''.

''Thank you, I hope I am not to late.'' He was about to say something but just before he could, Rose thanked him for showing up. This made Aldor feel a bit better, he was always scared to dissapoint people around him, specially his friends, but Rose's words reassured him.

''It is nothing really, I just really wanted to see how you were doing.''

He finished his sentence as he smiled and kept listening to his friend, as she commented on the fact that they haven't talked in a while. It was true, Aldor had been concentrating on many other things lately, and he was not exactly the best at making a schedule to hang out with friends. Although, he felt like this year he should make a better effort to spend time with the ones he cared about the most.

''''I have been quite alright, trying to do my best while the year is barely starting, also, I wanted to tell you I'm sorry I couldn't be with you and your friends on winter I had to- deal with some things, but anyway, how are you lately? I mean, you look fine like always, but uh- have you done anything interesting these last few days?''

He would begin playing with his hair, like he did most of the time when he was nervous, he would arch his back slightly as he thought about what to say next, it has been a long while, and he definetely does not want to act in an awkward way in front of his best friend.

"No, no, you're not late," Rose reassured Aldor. It was not unusual for him to ask her that, and she didn't want him to ever doubt himself, even if she knew he always, always did. Plus, she had just told him to come after classes. Technically, any time after classes had ended that particular day would be in that category. 5 o'clock, dinnertime, midnight, the next day, ten years from then- as long as he met her in the library after classes, she would be satisfied.

Well, really, that wasn't true. Rose would have felt almost abandoned if he had failed to show up, bringing up doubts in her mind if he even liked her presence or if she was just an annoyance to him, or if he really was okay, because she knew he would try his best to come even if he wasn't okay, and would be extremely concerned if he hadn't even come at all.

But she didn't need to think about that because he was here and he had shown up, just like she knew he would. Because that's how dedicated and good of a friend he was. Rose was at least glad he had told her he was quite all right, but concern sparked in her when he said he was dealing with some things, but rushed past it too quick for Rose to interrupt him kindly enough, and he asked her a couple of questions to check up on her. It would be rude for her to not answer his questions first, so she started by doing that.

"Don't apologize, it's totally fine," she reassured him first before continuing, "I'm- I'm alive," she said, trying not to lie to him while also not making him worried for her. Yes, she was still shaken by what had happened over Christmas Break, but she had found a way to cope with her anxiety about her mother and her sister and her mother's fiance by now. She was alive. Maybe not exactly "fine" or "okay," but she was alive. He complimented her by saying she looked fine, almost to reassure her he wasn't already super concerned by asking her how she was. "Oh- thank you. I haven't been doing anything super interesting, except for a Truth or Dare one of my friends organized with a whole bunch of kids from around school, and it was mostly fun. Very interesting, though." She supplied. Maybe that would further help her case of convincing him she was okay. But she did answer him honestly. Completely honestly, that time. "What about you? Have you been doing anything interesting recently?" she asked, which was only polite of her to reciprocate.

She would wait for him to finish talking, interested in how he was, and would listen to everything he had to say. Whenever Aldor had something to say, Rose always shut her mouth to listen until he was done. Rose knew she was one to ramble, so she didn't want to talk over him. Because he was quiet, Rose knew that if he had or wanted to say something it definitely was important. Otherwise, he would have just thought it in his mind and not said it out loud.

And now, to ask him what she really wanted to know. She cocked her head and asked, "What kind of things were you... dealing with? You mentioned it earlier." She blushed, feeling like she was imposing on his personal business, so she added, "You don't have to answer if you don't want to, I was just curious."

Aldor would sigh quietly as she told him he wasn't late, today, that was probably his biggest fear, he knew that Rose was usually a calm person, at least when she was around him, but he was afraid that she would be dissapointed because he was late or something similar, at the end of the day, Aldor did not have to worry about that anymore.

He listened to her, he was always focused in the conversation, it was very hard to get Aldor out of the flow of any sort of conversation. Probably that was one of the only traits that Aldor appreciated about himself. Once Rosed finished explaining to him what she had been doing, she asked him about how he was doing, this question was always hard for Aldor to answer, he usually never had anything good to say, and other times only bad things had happened and he did not feel like reminding himself about those moments.

Today was different though, he had a decent day, and starting the year wasn't as hard as he expected.

''I have been quite alright- Nothing that special has hapened yet, but I am good, I am actually happier than most of the time, I managed to write some things while I was gone and uh, and I actually got the chance to help with a fragment for my aunt's latest book- It was about dragons, she knew how much I love them, so she gave me the chance to give her some ideas, I guess that's it-''

Suddenly he heard Rose asking about what he was dealing with, instantly he realized he had spoken too much once again. He would take a deep breath as he looked down at the book he was carrying, he was clearly not excited about speaking about this, but he didn't want Rose to worry even more by not telling her anything, so he gathered all his courage and started speaking again.

''Well- My aunt has been quite busy lately, I probably never mentioned the fact she was- going out with the guy who delivers her books- well they are- kind of officially togheter, dating at least, you would probably think I'm not ok with it but actually that's not the case, I am very happy for her, and the guy is- he is good, he always tried to be friends with me- Of course, it never happened.''

He would pause with a chuckle.

''Now I realized he was probably just trying to win my aunt by showing off his skills at making friends with me- I don't really mind that but, now I barely hear about my aunt, because they go out extremely often. My aunt's friends were surprised that somehow she got to like someone before I could, now they are writing to me more often than Iphiane- And that brings us to the present, Valentine's day is close, and they keep asking if I already found someone- And I am honestly considering hiding at my dorm all day long- You think there might be something wrong with me? That I am not able to show that sort of feeling to anybody? I mean maybe you don't know but- You have a boyfriend, maybe you could tell me what to do-''

It seems that Aldor has severe problems, like worrying about the smallest of things.

Rose gasped lightly at his comment on being able to help his aunt with a dragon book. That was so cool! Her eyes looked a little happier than they were before. "Really? I bet it will be all the more amazing," she said. Him mentioning things that Rose knew made him happy made Rose cheer up- it had made her day, in fact. He had always loved dragons, that much had been very evident, from him talking about them to reading about them, to even being one for Halloween when they had gone together. Rose was glad he had been able to do something with dragons, a subject he particularly loved.

She listened to Aldor's story about his aunt and her boyfriend. His mother figure wasn't making time for Aldor because she was going out with her boyfriend a lot- Wow, now where in the world had she heard that story before? Oh, maybe because it was the exact same thing that had happened to Rose and her siblings, especially her little sister stuck at home, over this year. She felt bad for Aldor that they were in the same boat, as she knew this boat sucked. There was a water leak in between the boards and it had splinters all over it, but at least Aldor hadn't fought with his aunt the way Rose had fought with her mother. Rose had straight-up yelled at her mother, showing off her pre-adolescent angst. She wasn't even thirteen yet! Imagine the mood swings when she was smack dab in the middle of puberty. Yikes.

Anyway, Rose nodded sympathetically. She knew what he was going through.

Then he asked her advice about love- romantic love, and pointed out she had a boyfriend, which made Rose go pink just the slightest bit. She didn't think Aldor was doing this, but Rose didn't want to be stereotyped with the popular girls who had a boyfriend that didn't really mean anything to them. Eyre meant so much to Rose, it would be difficult to describe. She pondered her answer first before voicing it.

"I don't think you need to be obligated to have a sweetheart to enjoy Valentines Day," she said. "I mean, like, there might be some people who have girlfriends and boyfriends, but I don't think you have to have one just to have a good day. Not that I do, but a lot of people have significant others just because they want to be popular or look cool. I don't think you really need to worry about it, Aldor. If you end up doing something with someone you like on Valentines Day, then that's really good for you! If you don't, you can treat it like any other day." Then, she added, "And there is certainly nothing wrong with you, Aldor. Quite the opposite, really."

She didn't want to make the conversation awkward, but she asked politely, "Is there really anyone you would want to ask out? Like, you can totally not tell me if you don't want to, I'm just curious." She wasn't trying to push him or anything, and she was really lacking assertion in the words that she said.

Aldor would remain silent for a few seconds, like he froze in time for a moment, analizing every little thing that Rose mentioned, he clearly had no clue about anything of this topic. He was not that far away from Rose's age, but somehow he just never stopped to think about all of this until now, but it wasn't that hard to imagine how Aldor acted around other people, one very specific example was that boy from slytherin, Henry Knight, Aldor had stopped talking to him for reasons that somehow only the boy's mind could understand.

Henry had offered getting some friends with him to read books and other things, at first these ideas seemed great to Aldor, but the more he thought about them, the more thoughts about how everything would end up wrong came to his mind, so he just decided to walk away from the slytherin student, with nothing but fear and regreats. This same fear, somehow, was never present when he was with Rose, he found a way to feel at peace around the girl since the very first moment they met, getting to the point to even allow her to hug him, that was pretty much a really huge miracle.

Before he could say anything, his friend asked if there was anyone that the boy wished to ask out, his face went red as the smile he had seemed to fade for a few seconds, quickly forcing himself to smile once again.

''Well- there isn't a single person I actually feel like asking out, if there was I would tell you, but as you see- I'm not good at this sort of thing, in reality, It's not that I don't find girls pretty, it is just that I can't seem to aproach anyone- Every time I find someone pretty I just fail to be friends with them, and blind picking is not my thing- ''

Aldor would pause for a moment, as he flicked some hair away from his face.

''Meeting new people doesn't sound bad it is just that- I feel like I might not be able to handle the pressure, maybe- if you were there with me but, you know I don't like taking your time like that when I know you might have things to do, and I would have to prepare myself mentally and everything would be just a huge mess-''

Aldor would bite his lower lip, trying not to ramble about his worries like he did most of the time. But it was probably too late for that.

Rose nodded at his reply. "Yeah, that makes sense," she murmured. If Rose was in the same situation as him, which she was not, she would decide that they were too young for any serious love anyway, and so it was probably going to be meaningless asking some boy out. He said something about not wanting to take up any of her time, and Rose shook her head then, saying, "No, no, don't worry about that. I have plenty of time and not enough stuff to do with it, so I could definitely help you or be there for you whenever you need it," she said truthfully. She would always, always make time for Aldor, he was one of her best friends. "If you ever need me, I'll always be there. Don't worry about wasting my time and all that nonsense."

Never ever ever did Rose want anyone to worry about her the way she worried about other people. Never ever. It kept her awake at night, it plagued her thoughts during the day, it infected her life and almost every aspect. And it was horrible, she knew it. Knowing that anybody would worry about her the way she worried about others made her feel guilty for doing that to them. She wanted everyone to think she was supportive and strong, and she would always be there for people because she was strong and she could get through her own problems. She didn't want Aldor to worry about her.

"Like I said, Valentine's Day is not all that it's hyped up to be. Don't stress too much about it."

If Aldor had anything else to add, Rose would stay silent and listen to him.

Rose cocked her head, noticing the book that Aldor brought with him. It was very elegant, all black and silver and white, with his name on the spine. Carrying on the conversation, Rose's curiosity got the better of her. "What's this?" She didn't want to just take it and flip through it, so she just tapped it as she asked the question.

Aldor would simply smile awkwardly as she finished telling him not to worry about taking too much of her time, he knew that Rose would say something like that, but still, he couldn't help but worry sometimes.

Again, the boy listened carefully, as he was filled with surprise as Rose told him not to stress about Valentine's day, in reality, he did not stop to think about that before. She was right, he wasn't forced to have a partner to have a good day, soon enough he realized that he really was making things harder for himself by worrying about that sort of thing.

He sighed in relief, as he looked back at Rose, this time, his smile seemed honest.

''You're right, like always.''

Suddenly, his friend asked about the book he was carrying around, Aldor seemed quite joyful, he usually avoids feeling pride for anything or simply hides it very well, this time he couldn't help but feel absolutely inmerse in the emotion, as he slowly handed the book to Rose.

''Well- this used to be an empty book, this was my birthday gift from one of my aunt's friends, she helped me design the cover, and choose a good type of paper for the pages- My aunt is actually not aware of this but- I'm writing a few short stories and other type of literature in my free time. It's nothing special- they are mostly thrillers and other semi-horror related topics-''

The first pages were an introduction to the author and the topics the book will display, one of the very first stories described a nightmare, a small distorted town, filled with color was slowly being devoured by some sort of dark figure, reminding the reader of a black hole, it had no end, and anything that went inside simply dissapeared, light was non existant inside of said void. The story was mostly describing the decaying mental state of the protagonist, as they accept the fact that there's no escape from that horrible place.

The last story he wrote was about a police officer and his best friend, trying to decipher the clues that a criminal left behind, robbery, murder and fear was present all along the story, but soon, they found a building in construction, the last possible place where the criminal could be hiding, but as soon as they enter, the protagonist realizes it was a trap, the person he was searching for, was standing by him all along, the story ends, as the criminal pushes off the protagonist from the very last floor, they lock eyes one more time, and the story ends.
