I grin when I see the sign. Ice cream. I'm starving. My parents end up deciding to go get my school books and they reluctantly let me go to get some ice cream myslef. Their still uncertain about the wizarding world. I push open the door to the shop and walk in smiling at the delicious smell of sweet ice cream. I smile at first looking at the list of flavors then I start to feel self concise as I realize I really don't need it I'm already too ocerweight but I push thoughs thoughts aside and walk up to the counter and ask for a few scoops of cotton candu ice cream my favorite flavor. I grab the bowl and look around for a seat I notice several other kids around the same age as me and I guess their going to Hogwarts too I consider going up to some of them and trying to start a conversation but as usall shyness keeps my lips shut tight. I walk over to the only empty seat in the back corner of the shop. But just as I'm walkibg iver over I trip my ungainly feet hurt me once again and I fall spilling the ice crwam all over my shirt.

Miranda had finally, after no small amount of searching, given up on finding her brother. If he decided he'd rather not be found, there was no finding him. If she were lucky, maybe he had gone to place they'd been supposed to go to before his impromptu ditching.

She was not lucky.

Although, just because he was being an annoyance, did that really mean she had to miss out on some ice cream? It was hot out, and having one would be such a relief, if only for a while. That made up her mind.

In no time at all, Miranda had entered the parlour, and after looking through the options, ordered a cone and then headed away from the crowd near the counter, making her way towards the back of the store. She wasn't about to risk melting it in the heat outside, at least not until she'd eaten most of it.

After a few seconds of quietly enjoying the cold treat, Miranda glanced up in time to see a girl trip and spill some of her ice cream on her shirt. She winced sympathetically, then took a hesitant step in the girl's direction, wondering if help would be appreciated. In the end, she decided she could at least see whether the girl wanted help, and leave if she didn't. At the very least, she'd have something to do while waiting for her brother to show.

My face goes red as I basically fall right into the bowl of cold ice cream. I definitely did not want to do that I think to myself. I'm almost sure lots of people are looking at me now and I really don't like the attention I try to hide behind my long brown hair as I scramble to get up. I notice as I start to stand up an older girl is watching me, she's looking at me with a concered expression on her face. I shrink away from her not wanting to have bothered anyone. The girl looks a bit older then me at least twelve or so. She's pretty with a heart shapped face, tanned skin, light sky blue eyes and wavy light blonde hair that falls a bit past her shoulder. I can tell by the way shes dressed that she knows much more about the wizarding world then I do. Shes dressed in a cloak and in the hand not holding her ice cream is a pretty wand. Then again basically anyone is more knowledgeable about magic stuff then I am seeing as I just learned I was a witch a couple days ago.
As she continues to look at me worriedly I offer her a smile trying to convey that I'm fine. I grab a napkin near me on one of the tables and start dabbing at my ice cream covered shirt.
"I'm, I'm ok." I stutter out to the girl not wanting her to feel obligated at all to help me clean up my mess.

As Miranda watched, still debating silently, the girl grabs a napkin and started to clean up the spill on her shirt. To her surprise, the girl offered an assurance that she was fine, which meant she'd noticed that Miranda had been watching.

She felt her face go hot at the realization. "Are you sure? That was a pretty nasty spill...but I can fix it if you'd like..." For once, Miranda found herself feeling glad she'd memorized the ways to cast all of the spells they'd learnt in her classes during her first year. Even the ones that she'd never thought she'd use since her parents tended to help clean things up around their house. Well, her parents or Edymal. But the result was the same either way.

Miranda waited patiently for the girl to answer, her mind wandering through the list of spells her professors had taught her while she was at Hogwarts. The list wasn't the longest, and some of the spells only seemed useful in strange cases, but one never knew when they might end up in an odd situation. It was better to be prepared anyways, Miranda realized, a faint smile appearing on her face as she thought.

Her face went red when I talked to her she must have not realized I had already noticed her standing there looking at me.

"Are you sure? That was a pretty nasty spill...but I can fix it if you'd like..." She cautiously asks me.

I feel embarrassed as she talks about how awful my stupid fall was. Then I realize what else she just said I glance at her she can fix this? What did she mean? Then I realize my face flushing, I must look like an idiot the taller blonde girl, and probably most of the other people in this room now how to, with just a tiny flick of their wrist make this whole mess go away. She probably knew a spell or something like that that could clean me up just like that. I didn´t really want to bug her but if she could just make the mess of ice cream on the floor and on my shirt go away... I weighed my options. while taking her offer might inconvenience her she had offered to help herself. And accepting the help would probably be better than walking around with a stained shirt all day long and trying to clean up the floor for the next ten minutes the muggle way.

¨Uh, yeah sure. That would be great if you could fix this. I mean if you wouldn´t mind." I stumble to get out.

Miranda could tell that the girl was flustered, so she tried her best to diffuse the tension in the air. "Of course I wouldn't mind," she replied with a kind smile, shifting her ice cream cone to her right hand so she could perform the spell with her dominant limb. Lifting the wand, she pointed it first at the mark on the girl's shirt, then at the bits that had dripped onto the floor, muttering the word "scourgify" under her breath both times. Her job done, Miranda pocketed her wand and then shifted which hand held her cone once again.

"There," she said with a satisfied air. "Magic makes life so much easier, don't you think? Although muggle-built objects do the trick in most cases as well, but they're just a tad more unwieldy." She paused, then winced almost imperceptibly. If the girl was a muggle-born or half-blood, she might take Miranda's partially insensitive words the wrong way. And Miranda definitely didn't want to be portrayed as an elitist pure-blood snob just because of poor thinking on her part. But if she didn't take it the wrong way, she might when Miranda mentioned it...oh, what to do? In the end, she decided to simply wait and see how the girl replied before making an even bigger fool of herself.

"Of course I wouldn't mind," she replies with smiling. She shifting her ice cream cone to her other hand to get a better grip on her wand. I'm curious about the object I still didn´t have my own want I knew I would get my own wand soon but I wondered if it would be similar to the girls.

She points the wand at my shirt making a few moments before saying a strange word I´ve never heard before which must be the spell. She does the same thing with the ice cream on the floor and instantly they´ve vanished as if they were never there. I glance down at my shirt and realize that it doesn´t feel cold anymore there's not even a spot left behind. I definitely need to learn that spell I think. The girl pockets her wand with a satisfied grin and I´m about to thank her but she starts to talk before that.

"There," She says, "Magic makes life so much easier, don't you think? Although muggle-built objects do the trick in most cases as well, but they're just a tad more unwieldy."

I wasn´t sure as she said that if she knew I was muggle-born, then again she didn´t sound like she was trying to come off as condescending so I brushed it off. Besides, I giggled a bit, it was pretty true it would have taken me much longer to clean that up then it had taken her.

¨Yeah, they probably are sometimes.¨ I reply, ¨Thanks for helping me." I notice the Ravenclaw emblem on her shirt and remember that that's one of Hogwarts houses, ¨So you go to Hogwarts too?" I ask.

"You're welcome," Miranda replied. "But thank you for providing an interesting turn of events. Otherwise I probably would've gone home by now." She thought of the small pouch of Floo powder she had in her pocket, enough to take two people. Cedar had his own, but Miranda had taken enough for the both of them just in case he lost his...but now she'd lost him instead.

The girl asked a question, and for a moment, Miranda was confused. How does she know that I go there? Miranda wondered, then glanced down at her shirt. Oh. Anyone with half a brain could no doubt recognize the emblem on her shirt, which she'd forgotten about until that moment. The Ravenclaw eagle was a popular addition to most of her clothing, after all. She eventually just stopped noticing them.

"Yes, I do go to Hogwarts," Miranda replied with a small nod and another smile. "You do to, then?" She racked her memory, trying to remember if she'd seen the girl before, but came up empty. "Are you new? I don't remember ever seeing you before..." She hoped the girl was new, because otherwise she might get offended that she hadn't been recognized...but she looked to be a year younger than Miranda herself, so it would make sense if she were going to be a first year in the fall.

"You're welcome," Miranda replys. "But thank you for providing an interesting turn of events. Otherwise I probably would've gone home by now." She says, I hope I'm not holding her up. I really don't want to be the caue of her being late getting anywhere.

When I ask if she goes to Hogwarts she looks confused at first and I wonder if I had made a mistake maybe thats not the emblem for Ravenclaw house? Maybe I had misread something in one of my books learning about Hogwarts?

"Yes, I do go to Hogwarts," Miranda finally replies, and I smile relived that I didn't just make myself look like a fool and glad to meet another student at least I'll know one person at Hogwarts. "You do too, then?" She asks looking as if shes trying to remember me. "Are you new? I don't remember ever seeing you before..." She says.

"Yeah, I'm new. I'm going to be a first year this year. What about you? Are you a second year?" I ask curious I can tell the blonde is older then me but since I'm bad with ages I'm not sure by how much. She's probably a first or second year.

"Yeah, I'm going into my second year," Miranda replied, shooting another look around the building as she suddenly remembered Cedar was still missing. Nope...no sign of him yet. "My younger brother's going into first year as well, though. I'm pretty sure he's going to end up in Gryffindor, like our father." She paused. "Do you have any idea which house you'll be in yet?"

Miranda studied the girl, trying to decide what house she might be in. It wasn't like she was an expert a guessing, but it was an interesting thing to see, and came with a small degree of satisfaction if she was right. Unfortunately, Miranda's knowledge about the younger girl was pretty basic...she didn't even know her name.

A fact she was about to change.

"Oh, I forgot to mention, but my name's Miranda,"
Miranda said quickly, her cheeks reddening slightly. Seriously, who forgot to introduce themself? That was a pretty big thing to overlook. "Uh, what's yours?" She waited for the girl to answer, still trying to guess what house she might be slated for. The girl seemed friendly, which could mean Hufflepuff, but Miranda herself liked to think of herself as friendly, and she was in Ravenclaw. In fact, most of the people she'd met the previous year, with a few glaring exclusions, were all friendly.
