An Afternoon to Remember
Penelope sat down at her favorite room in the study table, the one in the corner. The comfortable chair was a nice improvement after the wooden chairs she had sat on all day during classes. They had been fine chairs, no doubt, but still, anyone would prefer plush comfort to wood when studying.
After taking out the supplies she’d need for DADA and Charms, Penelope decided she better take out the supplies for only one class at a time, otherwise the table would be filled up with no room for Melissa, who had agreed to come here after she was done with class as well.
After meeting in the dorm room, the two girls had grown closer and closer, and now Penelope couldn’t wait until she saw her friend everyday.
Penelope took out a scroll of parchment and a quill. She took out her Charms textbook first, so she decided that better be what she worked on.
She placed her DADA homework back into her bag, which she placed on the seat next to her.
“Let’s see...” she muttered to herself. She recalled what the professor had said and jotted that down on a different spare piece of parchment then the one for the homework. She also found small facts and little quotes in the textbook, and she wrote those down as well.
Once Penelope has finished with her notes, she exchanged them for a neat piece of parchment.
“Ok, now to the real lesson.” She said to herself. She shuffled a few things around.
i wonder where Melissa is now. she thought, and then checked her watch. It had only been ten minutes, surely Penelope couldn’t already be thinking about Melissa ditching her?
Penelope opened up her bag and took out her water bottle with “RAVENCLAW” stamped on the front. She gulped down the water and then set her water bottle back down. Being nervous always made her thirsty, although there was no reason to be nervous now. She was waiting for a friend, not waiting to be beheaded or something to that affect.
Penelope looked around. There were boys and girls in a sea of green, blue, yellow, and red all around her.
Penelope felt her chest tighten at the thought of all those people around her. She had to focus on the parchment in front of her before she went into complete panic-mode.
Penelope looked up once the anxiety had subsided and saw Melissa walk in the door. Penelope gave a small, shy wave, her hand still shaking.

An Afternoon to Remember
Melissa agreed that she and Penelope should meet at the study room after their classes were done. When the lesson was supposed to end, her professor kept on droning on and on. It was the most boring class: History of Magic. After ten minutes, Mel's professor finally stopped talking and handed out the homework. Oh no... I hope Penelope doesn't think I ditched her, she thought as she dashed out of the room and to the study room. When she reached the door, she saw Penelope waving at her. There was something wrong though. Her hand was shaking. "Hey, are you okay?" Mel asked as she walked to the table. She sat down in an empty seat and took her things out. She had a bunch of homework from transfiguration so Melissa decided to do it first. She had to write a 400-word essay about transforming mice into snuffboxes.
"So, what homework do you have?" Melissa asked. For some reason, they weren't together in any class. "By the way, are you hungry? I brought some cauldron cakes in my bag." Mel loved sharing things with Penelope because she never had a friend to share it with until now. As she ate her cake, she took out her notes from class and started her essay. It honestly wasn't that hard but Mel just couldn't get the right words out. She also gets distracted by the book she's reading if it's peaking out her bag. Studying was never her strong point and never will be. Except if it's languages. Mel loved to learn about languages. She understood many other languages and knew how to speak English and French. After getting distracted again, Mel went back to writing her essay.

“I’m fine,” Penelope hesitated, and then added, “I don’t know what happened. Every time I see all of the people around me, and realize how far away from home I am, I just-just-“ she stuttered, and then continued, “I feel like the whole world begins to close in on me.”
Penelope shuddered, wondering what was wrong with her. It obviously wasn’t normal what was happening, but it was something, and it needed to be dealt with.
Penelope smiled as Mel offered her a cauldron cake, but after her major freak-out, she didn’t think she could eat.
“No, thank you. So, what’re you working on?” She asked, changing the subject. She didn’t want Mel to see there was anything wrong, although it would’ve been obvious to anyone who knew her well.
Penelope picked up her homework and arranged it neatly, wanting desperately for the fluttery feeling in her stomach to go away. She could feel anxiety gripping her, and she took another sip of water.
“I’m fine.” She repeated, not knowing why. She wasn’t entirely sure if the latter was true, but she also felt confusion set in.
“Well, we better get to studying.” She said, trying to sound cheerful. She realized she had just finished her Charms homework unconsciously, and she put it away, conscious of Melissa’s eyes on her.

An Afternoon to Remember
While Melissa studied, she also worried about Penelope. She keeps on saying she's fine but Mel knew that something was still bugging her. Yeah, Hogwarts is pretty far away from home but it wouldn't bug anyone that bad. Whenever Mel felt homesick, she would think about how lucky she was to be at Hogwarts or she would eat something. Snacking always helped because the candy from Diagon Alley is just too good to keep on feeling sad. If Penelope was homesick, then she wouldn't be like this. Maybe she's just stressed from all of the homework and studying...Melissa thought.
When she went to a muggle school, she was always the smartest kid in her grade. Every other kid would ask her to help them do this or that which caused stress because everyone had a very high expiation from her. At one point, there was just too much pressure so Melissa thought she would shatter. She told her parents everything which made them mad because the teachers were supposed to help the kids, not Mel. After that, her parents homeschooled her and taught things about the magical world instead. "Hey Penelope, we don't have to study you know. We can just chill and talk about things," Mel finally said, eating another cauldron cake as she waited for Penelope's reply.

“No, I’m fine, we came here to study.” Said Penelope, taking a deep breath. Realizing this helped, she did it again and again, until she was able to calm down.
“There, I’m alright now.” Thank you for caring. She wanted to add, but she didn’t. It didn’t sound right, so instead she said, “I’m really glad we met, Mel. It seems as if the whole world is better now that I have a friend.” Said Penelope, smiling at her newly found friend.
As Penelope got back to studying, she let her mind wander for a bit. Always it drifted back to William, and always it started to ache at the thought of what she was going to say to him when she saw him again.
Oh William, If only you hadn’t gone to Azkaban. Then everything would be ok again.
Penelope looked at her textbook in front of her and frowned. There was something wrong with it.
“Hey, what happened?” She asked out loud. The cover had fallen off and a few of the pages had fallen out.
“Did you do that?” She asked Mel, not really thinking it was her. Why would Mel do something like that?
Penelope laughed. “This is really weird!”

“I’m really glad we met, Mel. It seems as if the whole world is better now that I have a friend,” said Penelope. "Yeah, me too," Melissa said back. Now I don't have to look at the other kids and wonder if I would have a friend like them...she thought. She was glad that she talked to Penelope that day in the dorm. We have things in common and she didn't care that Mel looked intimidating.
“Hey, what happened?” Penelope suddenly asked. The cover of her textbook had fallen off and some of the pages were torn off. “Did you do that?” Why would Penelope think I did it?Melissa asked herself. "Um no. I didn't do that. How did that happen?" she asked. Then Penelope laughed and said, “This is really weird!” Mel said, "Yeah I know right. If I didn't do it and you didn't do it, then who did it?"
She looked around the room but she didn't think anyone would do it. Everyone was either busy studying or talking with their friends. Who knows if it even was a person? Mel would've noticed if it was. What happened was really weird but this is Hogwarts after all. The school of magic. Anything could happen.

An Afternoon to Remember
Penelope smiled and let herself settle in. "Ok, so, what're you studying?" she asked. She rummaged through her back for her water, which always fell to the bottom, and took another drink. Her hands were still clammy, but she felt ok now. She took out some book tape, too, and started to fix the book in front of her. Still, she was surprised, but she thought it was best not to ask Mel about it any longer. She had seemed pretty offended when Penelope asked her the first time, and she didn't want to have that happen again.
"Where do you live? I used to live in Ireland, but now I live in London. The funniest thing about my whole family living in Ireland, is that they're all French!" she said, giving a small chuckle. Her family really was complicated.
When Penelope's mom was born, she and Penelope's dad were next door neighbors in France. When her mom's side of the family decided to move to Ireland, her dad's side soon followed. They were neighbors again and then her mom and dad got married. Then, Penelope was born. They bought a house in Ireland together and lived in it until Penelope was seven, right after her brother got taken away to Azkaban. Deciding it was best for a change, they voted on London, and that was where Penelope lived. She didn't live in the same house, though. Now, she lived in an apartment with her brother instead.
"If we live near each other, we might be able to see each other's houses! Well, apartments," she added sourly. she didn't want to live in a muggle apartment!

"Where do you live? I used to live in Ireland, but now I live in London. The funniest thing about my whole family living in Ireland, is that they're all French!" Penelope said. She was changing the subject but Melissa didn't care. "Oh I used to live in France but now I live in London too! You know, my entire family is English, not French," Mel said. Her parents were both born in England but moved to France when they got married. They had Melissa a few years later but when she had her first signs of magic, they moved to London. That's where Mel lives now. A house on Cherry Lane.
"If we live near each other, we might be able to see each other's houses! Well, apartments," Penelope said. Adding the last part quietly. I mean, it would be fun to visit each other over holidays...Mel thought. It was kind of weird how Penelope added 'Well, apartments' though. Then, she said, "Yeah, it would be cool. I think we live close to each other. I mean, we both live in London so yeah-" She was still kind of awkward because it's only been a few days since she met Penelope...

An Afternoon to Remember
@Melissa Carson
Seeing Melissa's awkwardness, Penelope took a step back. You moron, you just met her a week ago!
You're going to scare her off.she thought crossly, wishing she could take back what she said. Now she felt herself floundering for words as she did in every other conversation at Hogwarts.
Wait a minute, maybe it's not floundering for words. There is such a thing as a comfortable silence. Penelope let herself enjoy the silence for a moment, reading a bit out of her Charms homework. She caught a few mistakes and quickly crossed them out, not wanting to mess up. She needed to perfect her Charms, it was her future.
"What's your favorite subject?" she asked Mel after awhile, pretending she had never mentioned anything awkward. "Mine's Charms." she added, and finished her homework. She put it in her bag and then shuffled around for her last homework. DADA.
Penelope sighed. It wasn't the teacher or the work she didn't like in Defense Against the Dark Arts, it was the subject itself. It seemed so advanced and difficult, she struggled every time she entered the classroom. Penelope had never been afraid of an academic challenge, they were her favorite kind, but when she didn't enjoy something, it was a completely different story.
Reluctantly she began on the homework, although she didn't understand the half of it. She wouldn't let her confusion show on her face, though, but to anyone who knew the girl, they'd know to look in her eyes for the true emotion.
Poor Penelope, she's so confused. She's really never been good at this whole "making friends" thing.

"What's your favourite subject?" Penelope suddenly asks, "Mine's Charms." It was a sudden question and Melissa didn't have time to think about it so she just said, "Oh, I also like Charms...and Defence Against the Dark Arts. I guess that's why I got this wand." She then pulled out her rosewood wand. "Olivander said it was a wand for both attack and defensive spells." It was a nice wand, to be honest. "What about your wand Penelope?" Mel asked. Then, she took out her textbooks and parchment. She had to do her astronomy homework. It was quite fun learning about stars and space.
When Mel moved on to her Potions homework, she started to struggle. Mixing things wasn't her strong point. How could anyone memorize all of the potion ingredients and what they do? she wondered. It was also kind of confusing and also stressful because if you mixing it too much or too little, it could turn into something else or explode. Charms on the other hand, only required you to focus and know the spell. Yeah, it does take practice but at least it was easier to learn. After all, everything takes practice. It just depends on what it is.
