Well something was off. Wyatt had been getting dirty looks from Gryffindors, scared looks from Hufflepuffs, motherly disapproving looks from Ravenclaws, and smirks from ¼ of the Slytherins.
Wyatt was happily living his life in the shadows of the castle, no drama, no mysteries, just homework and normal school things. Yet, now, he was the center of everyone’s attention, and he didn’t like it very much. He didn’t know what to do, was he supposed to say something? As he walked past a group of short first-year Hufflepuffs staring him down, he shouted, “what are you looking at?”
The Badgers jumped back, and he continued walking down the hall. It reminded him of the time he gave his father a concussion. He’d scurried out of the house like the rat he was. He smiled at the memory.
Something was still really wrong. Walking further down the hall he heard someone say something incredibly interesting. A gaggle of two Ravenclaws and a Gryffindor were gossiping quite loudly.
“Have you heard of Nell? Zoldak, yeah. Apparently, she threatened to beat up a prefect when they found her breaking curfew, and she got detention. I also heard she was caught there with a boy! I thought she was a smart girl… I can’t be seen around her, she’s practically a Slytherin.”
Wyatt smiled at the short story. The Zoldak girl was awfully annoying and it served her right to get in trouble, though it didn’t sound like her to pick a fight with someone or sneak around with some boy. Sure she’d petrified a prefect but that was more in self-defense.
When Wyatt heard the Ravenclaw compare her to a Slytherin, he almost lost it. She is anything but a Slytherin, Wyatt thought. How dare you even think she’s worthy of being anything close to a Slytherin!
“Nell Zoldak is anything but a Slytherin,” Wyatt scoffed.
The Ravenclaw students froze, and looked at Wyatt like he was going to hex them into oblivion for their mistake but the Gryffindor spoke up.
“Well you should know,” he said. “Don’t you have a shrine for Voldemort you’ve got to build?”
Wyatt flinched upon hearing the name being spoken. When his mother was teaching him about the wizarding world, she had told him all about the Dark Lord. They didn’t use his name in their house. Wyatt’s grandparents had done terrible things to show him their support. It was Wyatt's own fault for asking his mother to share the full stories. Now, upon hearing the name, he could never suppress a flinch, but it beat breaking into tears as he used to when he first heard the stories.
His visible uncomforted state made the Gryffindor chuckle as if the gesture was confirmation of something he’d previously thought.
Wyatt backed off quietly, confused, and continued walking. Maybe what the Gryffindor had said was some sort of Gryffindor vs Slytherin thing, but it had never happened before, and was it only a coincidence that it started on a day everyone was acting strangely?
Wanting to relieve some stress, he noticed his enemy. Nell was walking down the hall, getting the same looks as Wyatt had been getting.
“Hello, Nell,” he said, smirking mischievously. “How was detention? Breaking curfew again and threatening a prefect? I thought you Ravenclaws were supposed to be smart! Bright enough to learn from your past mistakes, at least- and who was the boy you were with? I didn’t know you were the type to sneak around with a romantic interest… let alone have a romantic interest.”

Nell had encountered Wyatt yet again. “Wonderful,” she murmured. Wyatt approached her and mocked her about the things that happened. She was about to keep walking, but then comprehended what the Slytherin was saying.
“Woah woah woah,” she started. “First things first. Detention was fabulous,” she said sarcastically. “Now, threatening a prefect? That’s the last thing I would do in my Hogwarts career,” she said, then giving him a look so he remembered the petrifying. “I’m not to threaten anyone, I just do what needs to be done,” she added.
“Now, a ‘romantic interest?’ Why in the world would I, a twelve year old Ravenclaw who just likes to focus on her studies, have a romantic interest? Let alone threaten a . . . prefect with them?” she said. Nell was about to lose it. She absolutely hated when rumors went on about her.
She gave Wyatt a minute to comprehend what she had said, for she had needed to a minute in the beginning. “Now, leave me alone a go have fun praising You - Know- Who. There aren’t only rumors about me,” she added. With that, Nell walked away and headed to class. She got looks from pretty much everyone who passed her, but she tried her very best to ignore it.

“Now, leave me alone and go have fun praising You - Know- Who. There aren’t only rumors about me.”
Well, that was confusing. At least she didn’t say his name, Wyatt was grateful for that. Maybe she did have a soul, but that confusion was for another time.
Rumours! Why hadn’t he thought of that! Leave it to a Ravenclaw to make him feel like an idiot. As Wyatt walked down the hall, he saw more people who gave him more dirty looks. Some had even called him a Death Eater. The issue was, his grandparents had been deeply involved with Death Eaters. He had really bad blood in him, so saying that he had no connections to the Dark Lord would have been a lie.
He wanted to ask Nell more about it. He wanted to ask if she knew who started the rumours, but she’d already turned the corner. Why was that always the case? She sure did love saying a few sentences and then leaving a conversation. Then again, Wyatt and Nell weren’t the best of friends, so it made sense.
Since these kids were afraid of Wyatt being a dark wizard, he decided to use his new power to his advantage. He stomped back over to a scrawny, short, red-haired Ravenclaw, one of the losers who’d been gossiping about Nell, grabbed him by the collar and menacingly grit out, “who told you?”
“Jordan! Jordan Applegate!” Wyatt turned his head to the other Ravenclaw, who answered “I heard it from Heather Noble,” she squeaked. Then, he turned to the Gryffindor. “Well, Casey told me. Casey Hannah,” he shrugged, obviously less intimidated. Wyatt pushed the small Ravenclaw boy away, letting go of his shirt, and he hit the wall with an oomph.
No leads there, they all heard from different people.
"Bloody hell."
He found Nell in the hall a short while later, and asked. "Who did you hear it from? My rumour," he said. "I heard yours from a group of first years in the hall. Each of them heard it from someone different! Rumours spread bloody fast at Hogwarts..."

“Oh! How did praising him go?” Nell asked sarcastically. He asked who had told her about the rumor. “Let me think. Her name started with an M. Macy, Madeline...” she wondered aloud, trying to remember her name. “Yes! Her name was Meredith. Meredith Ready,” she informed him.
Before he could ask, Nell told him her year and house. “First year, and same house as you. Slytherin,” she told him. “Need any more information that you can’t figure out yourself?” she asked. But, before he had a chance to respond, Nell walked away.
Any time a fellow peer gave her a look, she ignored them and kept walking. Why would anyone start a rumor about her? What did she do to make them hate her? She sighed and reached her dorm. “Why?” she wondered aloud.
Nell placed her books on her bed and scurried down to the Great Hall for supper. The day had flown by, but Nell was glad. She couldn’t take more dirty looks than she had gotten for the day. She’s was at her limit. Nell didn't eat much that night, but when did she eat much?
She walked back to her dorm to see her fellow Ravenclaws giving her dirty looks. Without a word, Nell went outside for fresh air. It wasn’t past curfew, so she was fine for now.

Rumours
So Meredith Ready of Slytherin was the one who told Nell, but who started it, and why would anyone start a rumour about Wyatt or Nell? What could someone have against a couple of quiet first years? He thought about all the people he’d ever wronged, and there wasn’t a list at all. Sure he was passively mean to a few people, people like Percival Gray the blood-purist bigot and... every Gryffindor.
On his walk to the Slytherin common room, Wyatt was given about a trillion grimaces and a million jeers. He retaliated just a little bit. When one Gryffindor had called him a bite-sized Death Eater, he’d shot him a Dancing Feet Spell.
A list of honorable mentions include
- “What are you looking at, you abominable pig.”
- “I’d give you an uppercut your dog would feel if you weren’t a prefect.”
- “I swear to Merlin I will feed you to the Hippogriffs if you ever call me that again.” Replying to "greasy bastard."
When he opened the door to the common room, he was offered a high five, and he shot a glare towards the offender.
He saw Meredith Ready sitting alone in a big comfy looking chair by the fireplace. He marched over to her and stood in front of the armchair. “I assume you’ve heard the rumours,” he said. “Do you know who started them?”
He really wanted an answer. He needed to shut this down and fast. He wasn’t looking for controversy in his first year of school. All year, he’d been able to smoothly sail by, no drama, no nothing, and now, there’s a big rumour- a reputation destroying rumour out there. Not very good. Not very good at all.

Meredith had been sitting in a comfy chair and then she saw a boy and he walked down to her and she thought, " Hmmm... I should tell him about that girl. Wait he is that boy I started the rumors about. So that means I should tell him that we should look for the person who started the rumors. That will be what I do."
" Hello, I'm Meredith Ready and aren't you Wyatt Starkey and yes I have heard about the rumors. I only heard some from a Hufflepuff but I guess you did not set a class room on fire because their was no smoke in the castle that day. But did you really hex a professor? Er I should not be saying this to you because it is about you... But did you really bore a professor by saying, Hippogriffs are carnivorous and are extremely dangerous until tamed, which should only be attempted by a trained witch or wizard. The diet of the Hippogriff consists mainly of insects, birds, and small mammals such as ferrets. They will sometimes paw at the ground for worms if no other food was readily available.
When breeding, Hippogriffs built nests on the ground, and laid only a single, fragile egg. The egg usually hatches in twenty-four hours. Infant Hippogriffs are capable of flight within a week, but it takes many months before they were strong enough to accompany their parents on long journeys. Or is that not real? Wow! I must of bored you to death be just saying that, and yes someone wrote it down and gave it to me.
Meredith thought that was a bit much but she hoped he thought she wasn't it.

Instead of a sensible reply, Meredith dove into a speech about Hippogriffs. She wasn’t very good at talking to people, so Wyatt crossed her off as someone who’d be able to spread a rumor throughout the whole school.
“Wait a second, hex a professor? I don’t know what you’re talking about.” He thought about the time Nell and Wyatt had gone out after curfew (separately, of course). Nell had heard footsteps and petrified the owner of those footsteps. That was an incredibly well-kept secret... how did Meredith know? Or was the Snake just talking nonsense hoping that something will stick? That or she had really good connections and knew everything about everyone. Now, Wyatt was just overthinking. This girl, though she just recited a page out of one of Newt Scamander’s books, didn’t seem like a super-genius.
“So you’ve heard about the rumours,” he said, steering the subject back to its original point. “Will you help Nell and I find the student who started them?” Wyatt hated that he was asking, but Meredith was the only person in the whole school that hadn’t given him a dirty look or called him a rude name. “Think about it. If yes, tomorrow morning, meet me right outside the Great Hall, and we’ll figure it out.”
He walked out of the common room and headed up to the owlery, where he sent Nell a letter.

Meet me in the hallway outside of the Great Hall tomorrow morning.
I’ve asked Meredith Ready to help us find who started the rumours, she may also be there.

Nell eventually went back to her dorm before she got detention. Again. On her bed lay a small letter. “No one ever sends me letters,” she muttered under her breath. Nell ripped open the envelope and pulled out the piece of parchment.
She read it and sighed. That Wyatt boy was getting on her nerves. She crumpled the letter and threw it in the waste basket next to her. She wasn’t going to the hallway outside the Great Hall, and no one could make her,
Nell went to sleep, and, surprisingly, slept through the whole night. Why surprising? Well, Nell usually wakes up at about 3 am and can’t fall back to sleep. That’s why.
Nell walked down to the Great Hall for breakfast feeling quite . . . refreshed. She avoided Wyatt and took a seat at the end of the Ravenclaw table. She didn’t eat anything (typical), however. When the majority of the students had finished, Nell left the table and headed outside without even going near the hallway she was to meet Wyatt and Meredith at.
She took a seat on a bench outside and stared off at the sunset in the distance. It was a nice evening and no one was going to ruin it.

" Hmmm Okay!"
Meredith knew that she was not going to spread anything else sense she would be trying to "help" Nell Zoldak and Wyatt Starkey find out who this amazing person was or at least amazing in her eyes, so it was time for back up! There was only one huge problem, Meredith had no back up.
" Okay so sense I have no one to go to there must be a way to frame someone else who is willing to do it. Who would want to do it? ..... Alina! No, not Alina she is to good..... Maybe Cassie. No not Cassie, or Alexa, would Clay like to do it? Maybe not Clay she might tell someone about it or maybe not we haven't seen each other in a while so none of them. But Alina would be perfect but she might already be on the list to check. .... I know what to do! I will tell someone who is already telling my rumors to make a lot more and maybe even a few about me or so. But who?"
As Meredith thought about it time seemed to pass very fast and be the time she was going to bed it was 5;30 in the morning. She groaned and went back to get ready for the day.

Noticing that Nell didn’t meet him at the Great Hall in the morning, he went searching for her. He found her lounging around on a bench in the common area, still getting strange looks. So they still haven't forgotten about the rumour, huh.
“Bloody hell, Zoldak, why does everything have to be so difficult with yuh-” he caught himself. He’d gotten so angry that he’d started speaking in his old factory town Cokeworth accent that he so desperately tried to get rid of. “With you,” he corrected, quietly.
“I’m only trying to get rid of this rumour- a rumour that isn’t even true,” he lied. “It may help you, too!” His blood was boiling. If there was a time he felt like he was going to rip someone’s head off, it was right now. “It’s very likely the person who started my rumour is the one who started yours, or at least knows who did it!”
It was his own fault for trying to help Nell Zoldak. He let out a frustrated sigh.
“Fine then, if you don’t want to be helped then I cannot help you,” he said. “I didn’t know you enjoyed being the star of the show. I didn’t know you liked to see people’s heads turn just to look at you in disgust.” With that, he walked over to where Meredith was standing.
“Hello, Meredith. So, who did you hear the rumour from?” He really needed an answer. He was already getting kicked around by the Gryffindors who found him to be a very easy target, he didn’t need a rumour that he was secretly practicing dark magic, and oh, yeah, is the grandson of a couple o’ Death Eaters! He needed to get rid of this rumour before whoever started it learned more interesting information. If the kids at this school knew about his grandparents and his ability to talk to snakes, he'll be an outcast for 7 years straight.
