Teardrops and Trophies
It was a few weeks into the start of her first year in her new school and to Maria it seemed that all the amazement and luster of a new place had dulled. She had started to feel the brunt of being in a new place alone and the pressure of being in an entirely different world had begun to seep in. Everything seemed to overwhelm her - the school work, the people, the school itself. Lately she’d noticed that she hadn’t been sleeping as well, or eating as much, she was too easily distracted now, instead of her normal awareness. When she wasn’t around people she would feel all the emotions hit her at once. This was all so new to her and she had no idea what to do. She found solace in the fact that she lived in a dorm, because it mean she wasn’t entirely alone all the time.
But in the times where she it all felt like too much, she would come to the Trophy Room. It was an odd place to let ones feelings out, but she realized not too many people came here so it afforded her a peace she didn’t find anywhere else. Sometimes she’d come here to write or read, but today she had come here for one purpose - to cry. It was the whole package this time, hot tears streaming down her face, sobbing and a bit of shaking.
She hated crying. Her eyes would always get puffy to make look like she was squinting most of the time, her throat would get scratchy and she just wasn’t a “crier”. She liked keeping her head held high and strong. But lately it was the only thing that gave her comfort. But as she let herself be consumed by her thoughts, absentmindedly wringing her hands, she failed to noticed the steps of someone approaching.

Teardrops and Trophies
If there was anyone who was good at crying at pretty weird places, it was Rosie.
Maybe it was why she was drawn here. Of course, she wasn't here to cry. She was here to look at the trophies! She never came in here for that reason, strangely. Only to meet someone, or just talk to someone. But for once, she wanted to take in Hogwarts victories. She was proud to be at her school, and wanted to acknowledge what they had done. Well, specifically the Hufflepuffs. She wanted to see a Hufflepuff trophy. But that didn't mean she wasn't proud of the other houses! Hufflepuff was usually, at first glance, deemed as the softies. But they were pretty good at a lot of things! Like cooking!
As she entered the room, she heard the slight sharp breath of someone crying. As a cry baby herself, she knew that noise better than anyone. And, with her lack of privacy for someone in trouble, she had to help! Not indulge completely in their vulnerbilities, but at least try to help them smile. Or do whatever they thought would make them feel better. Hopefully, one of those things wasn't to leave.
She turned a bit and finally saw the girl, she looked a bit younger, definitely not a third year. "Hey! Sorry. Hey," she repeated quieter, coming over slowly. "Are you okay?" She kept a distance away at first. "Uh, I mean is there anything I can do to help? My name's Rosie."

Teardrops and Trophies
An older Hufflepuff came into the Trophy Room after hearing the sound of Maria crying. She asked if the younger girl was okay before introducing herself as Rosie.Pulled away from her thoughts, Maria noticed the other girl and then scrambled to get on to her feet, desperately trying to wipe away the tears that just kept falling.
“S-sorry,” She hiccuped. “I-I di-didn’t notice anyone else was here.” At this point she tried to control her sobs for the sake of the other girl. She felt so exposed being found by someone else, completely caught off guard. She took out the handkerchief that she kept in the pocket of her robes to pat away her tears and took a few deep breaths. It was embarrassing enough to be found crying and she didn’t want to continue talking to this girl blubbering like a small child.
“Right. Um, I’m sorry about that.” Her voice was still shaky, tears still glistening in her eyes. “I came up here to be alone for a bit. But don’t worry I can leave if you want me to.” Lowering her eyes she turned to her things on the floor in the corner where she had been crying to get her things so she could leave. Silently, she hoped the ground would just swallow her whole or that the older girl wouldn’t mention this incident to anyone else.

Teardrops and Trophies
She watched as the younger girl desperately tried to cover her tears and the fact she had been crying, and Rosie's heart sank a bit for her. In a way, she saw herself in her, embarrassed of her own tears and embarrassed to be caught crying in a place like the trophy room. Rosie was hesitant on how to approach her as she hiccuped an apology. "No, it's okay. If I knew someone was crying in here, I would've approached a little more quietly at least. Maybe with some cookies in hand." She joked, trying to get her to smile.
She stood a good distance away from her, it was enough for personal space, but at arms reach so Rosie could hold out a hand to her if needed. "Hey, don't apologize for crying. It's alright, it happens. You don't need to leave. But if you need to, to get somewhere you can be alone, that's okay." She soothed, holding out a hand to her. "I know I'm just a stranger, but... Do you wanna talk about it? You seem really sad, and I'd hate to leave you here while you're crying." She suggested, putting on a warm smile.
Hufflepuffs were the softies of Hogwarts, but Rosie prided herself on being someone people could to when they were sad. It didn't feel right, in her heart, to leave this girl alone when she had to run somewhere like this to cry it out. She paused before glancing over at a little space to sit on the floor for a bit. "If you're not leaving, you should probably sit down. Your head's gonna get dizzy if you're breathing like that." Sadly, she would know. Rosie had a bad habit of internalizing her emotions, so when it all came out, it made her dizzy for a while. She knew that you had to take it slow.

The corners of Maria’s lips raised a bit at the older girl’s joke. At least she wasn’t making fun of her. She noticed her move closer and held out her hand. Maria accepted it.
Rosie made a gesture to the spot on the floor and suggested they sit. Deciding that she might as well try, Maria spoke up again. “Thanks.” This time she met the girl’s eyes with a small smile. “All of this has just been so new and honestly it’s very overwhelming.” She said as she sat back down.
Apprehension entered Maria’s thoughts briefly. She didn’t know this girl and she hadn’t had time to observe her. Was she sure she could trust her? For all she know this girl could take everything she told her and tell everyone about it. It was bad enough that she’d seen her like this, and Maria didn’t want other people to know that she spent her time crying in here. But on the other hand, she was also presented with a person who wanted to listen to her. Time and time again she had been coming here to let out her feelings because she thought it would help but the heavy feeling in her chest had yet to go away. Would talking about them to this girl help? Weighing her options, the highest risk was that she might tell other people. “But do I care?” Maria thought."Hey, don't apologize for crying. It's alright, it happens. You don't need to leave. But if you need to, to get somewhere you can be alone, that's okay. I know I'm just a stranger, but... Do you wanna talk about it? Teardrops and Trophies
Maria took her hand, and Rosie let out a small sigh of relief. She squeezed it gently out of comfort, and sat next to her on the floor when she followed her over. Hopefully holding her hand made her feel a little better. She knew she loved physical affection when she was sad. Quinn would always give her the biggest hugs, which, considering he was almost 8 feet tall, was kind of terrifying, but still appreciated. But not the point. She wanted to offer the same comfort people did to her, or else she wouldn't feel right going about her day. Who was she to ignore someone in need?
She finally began to talk, and Rosie listened. She was definitely a first year, and she was feeling the same emotions that Rosie was in her first year. A muggle entering a full magic environment was very weird, you know. There were times when she wanted to go home because she didn't feel like she belonged there. But she stuck it out, and now here she was. Despite the words from purebloods, and just from her own anxiety. And to hear someone overwhelmed with the same thought made her heart ache.
Rosie's thumb trailed over her knuckles before she found her words. "I understand that." She started, nodding. "This whole wizard thing, right? It's very overwhelming. I felt the exact same when I came into campus. Everything was happening so fast and I couldn't keep up." She turned so she was facing her. "But it does get better, because you find people that make it less overwhelming and you gain confidence in the magical things you excel in, does that make sense?" She paused. "I guess what I'm trying to say, is that it's okay to feel overwhelmed now, and crying is okay too, no need to bottle it all up. But it won't last forever." She ended, smiling a bit. She realized she still didn't have this girl's name, but she felt weird asking for it now.

Teardrops and Trophies
As they sat, the older girl continued to gently hold her hand as she started talking.
After a short pause, Rosie continued.
Maria listened to her intently. Knowing that someone else felt the same things lifted her spirits a little higher especially because the girl came from her own house. It was nice to have someone who understood how she felt. Maria had felt so out of sorts when she came here. In all her eleven years of existence she was able to adapt to her surroundings quickly. When she came here it felt like she had been thrown into the ocean and couldn’t swim or keep her head above the water. It almost felt like an out of body experience. There was so much happening so fast that just when she would feel like she got the hang of this, they’d change again and she’d struggle again."I understand that. This whole wizard thing, right? It's very overwhelming. I felt the exact same when I came into campus. Everything was happening so fast and I couldn't keep up."
After a short pause, Rosie continued.
She smiled again at the younger girl and she did the same. Maria’s tears had long dried and she felt so much better than she did when she first came into the Trophy Room. After a few moments, she found her words. “I just- I’ve been so lost, and I didn’t know I could handle all of this.” She trailed off before she spoke again. Her hands fiddled with the material of her jumper and her just wouldn’t quite meet Rosie’s. “I mean, my mum told me as much as she could but it’s all just so different. And I’ve felt so alone.” Her voice was muted towards the end, a show of the vulnerability that she never expressed. “I’ve always been so sure of things, but not now, I’ve never felt more lost.”"I guess what I'm trying to say, is that it's okay to feel overwhelmed now, and crying is okay too, no need to bottle it all up. But it won't last forever."

Teardrops and Trophies
She noticed that Maria was actually listening to what she was saying, so Rosie felt comfort at the fact she seemed to be calming down. She finally recognized her as one of the first years from her house, and she knew Hufflepuffs usually took the hardest hit when it came to first impressions. First year Hufflepuffs were easy to manipulate, she knew that as one of them. She just wished people would look at them more as a stronger house than the babies. At least they won at Quidditch games! Undefeated! But she digressed, she was a strong Hufflepuff supporter but not right now.
She almost let out a sigh of relief when Maria started talking. She had been running out of things to say! Rosie just nodded and listened, finding herself relating to sadly a lot of things she said. She hadn't been more confused than when she came to Hogwarts for the first time. A muggle being exposed to those types of things was definitely a world shatter. Everything she knew was altered as soon as she stepped onto campus. She took a breath and nodded. "Yeah, I get that. I really do. It's overwhelming and confusing, and kinda scary." She paused. "But you're not alone, okay? Things become a lot less scary when you know people are experiencing the same thing." Rosie held her hand, resting them on the floor since they had been sitting. "I would talk to other first years, too." She suggested, trying to offer solutions. "But I can answer any questions you have to, I know what this is like."

Maria had to admit, exposing her insecurities felt good. Sure, she was in an empty hall with a stranger surrounded by the victories of the students of Hogwarts’ past, but in the few moments she had with Rosie it felt like she was back home in her room talking to a good friend about life. Moments like these felt sacred. These were the moments where she let down her walls and was completely honest about feelings. “If I’d known a good cry and a pleasant conversation were all I needed I would have done this sooner. She thought.
She was thankful Rosie had found her and got her talking. The fact that she was telling her that it was okay to feel the way she did and that it would get better warmed Maria’s heart. When Rosie offered to answer her questions Maria truly felt that she found someone to confide in. She had friends, and a few “acquaintances” but she had yet to find that one person she could fully break down in front of. Being 11 there was still so much that confused her and being in a new place just added to that.
“I do have a lot of questions.” Maria laughed. “But right now I think I’m still just trying to get a hold of everything. I’ll figure it out eventually I guess. Don’t worry I’ll ask when I need to. I promise.” She laughed as she released their hands to grab her things and held her hand out to Rosie. “Thank you, again. This was nice.” After a beat, she noticed something. “My name’s Maria by the way.”

Thankfully, it seemed as if Rosie's comforting was a success. She got her to smile, and she got her to laugh! Those were two very good things! She nodded at her, also thankful that she finally got her name. Maria. She'd remember that. She stood up with her fellow Hufflepuff, and shook her name. "It's lovely to meet you, you know my name already but... I'm Rosie, I'm a third year. So if you need any help with getting around at all, I can help. I know my way around the campus pretty well, specifically too the kitchens for cookies." She grinned, heading to the door and putting her hands in her robe pockets.
"It's okay to have questions, by the way. Everyone's gonna be confused in this place. But asking questions is better than freaking out in silence." She said, leaning against the door. Rosie paused before talking again. "You need help to your next class or something? I'm on a free period right now so I'm up for a tour if you need it." She crossed her arms, her face tucking into her scarf slightly. She always had it on, it kept her warm in the cold temperatures of campus.
