@Jane Victoria

A tattered cloak flapped idly about the tiny, emaciated body of a little boy. The cape and scarf he also wore lazily fluttered along with the wind. His hair moved a little as well, but not nearly as much. As black as black could possibly be, it was matted and knotted and wild. Little twigs and leaves stuck out here and there, bringing up the question of when his last shower had taken place.

He was crouching, instead of sitting, but clearly cold. His body didn't shiver at all, but the ends of his long, thin fingers had a slight blue tint, right below the base of his unusually long, dull claw-like fingernails. His skin was horribly pale, going beyond white into a ghastly grey that reminded some of a terminally ill wonton wrapper. Dark shadows rimmed tired, bloodshot, dark greyish blue eyes, thin mouth pressed tightly into a unwavering line.

He was looking out over the water as banks of mist went lazily rolling over the surface. Never quite touching the dark, glassy mirror but choosing instead to hover just out of reach, mocking the lake, daring it to reach out and try to touch them. The mists faded during the day, but here, in the extreme early hours of the morning, they were thick. The forbidden forest constantly had mist, and some of those clouds often rolled over the nearby lake, intensifying the already breathtaking natural phenomenon.

Kaegen missed his home. He missed the simplicity of the fens. He could hide from Grandfather, Grandfather at least made more sense than the people here did. Death witches were everywhere, you couldn't trust anyone and his singular friend had never really seen him the same way. A year and a half gone down the drain. He could feel the heavy pouch, strapped under his cloak, hidden away close to his body, full of the present he had been making, although now it was hardly a present at all.

Now it was just a journal. A book of notes Kae would keep, and use to remember. He had no on to give it to, but did that really matter? It was still useful, after all. Still an asset to have. He had never been good with names, or faces. The thin line that represented his mouth tightened further, hands clenching slightly. Remembering faces. Another thing he was bad at.

You didn't have to remember faces in the fens. You just hid. Hid from the creatures and the poisons and the death. You hid, and you cried quietly by yourself, and you wished to be anywhere other than there. But it made sense. He needed something to make sense, needed it badly enough to miss his home.

Jay had been aimlessly walking outside of Hogwarts for around an hour now, scheming on ways to cause a little trouble without getting caught. About two weeks ago they had found a fanged frisbee near the lake and now it was in their hand. It was for sure a cold morning, it wasn’t raining anymore to Jays disappointment but the ground was really muddy. Every time they took a step the mud would make a squish sound and splatter on their very rugged chucks. The last time it was clean was probably.... When they were nine, and when they were nine they got these shoes as a present. Yikes... Jay thought.

At this point Jay Victoria was running around the muddy grass and throwing the frisbee into random directions. Their face felt numb but it didn’t matter, being alone out here was fantastic! Perhaps they could find more random stuff by the lake! And with that thought Jay went off to the lake, but of course- they threw the frisbee towards the lake just because. Actually... they had hoped to hit an animal or something with the fanged frisbee heh heh...

Merlin! Jay had nearly hit some figure down by the lake! Whoever the person was, they seemed small and shady... especially with that cloak. Jay Victoria ran down to the figure. Just be nice... don’t be a bigot... they told themself.

Hi, I’m Jay and who are you?” They said really fast. You idiot! That was a terrible introduction! Jay picked up the fanged disc and wiped the mud off of it in a sort of awkward way.

Lonely, maybe? Was lonely the right word for what he was feeling? The boy had nothing else to occupy his thoughts, and so the worried built up over a year of denial started to trickle to the front of his mind. He wasn't the same, not really. Half of his being was something else, wasn't it? Vampire, she said? It was almost a year since he had heard the omb try to convince him that he was different, but he hadn't had time to think. Every free second he was worrying about his friend, and every second he wasn't doing that he was trying to grab every last crumb of power he could.

But now? Now he had himself, and his hate. No objectives, no goals, just his own thoughts. Well, he did have the one goal that he was sure would never leave him. He was scared of it leaving him, disappearing as quickly as his other dreams. The one goal that still remained was to survive, to stay alive for as long as he possibly could, come what may.

That goal in itself, it kind of made him different, didn't it. The school was a hellscape of death and bloody demises, but no one else really seemed to care. Maybe he was the only one who wanted to stay alive, or something. The only one who cared about their own life.

As he was thinking this rather somber thought, a blur whizzed towards him. A green blur with snapping fangs. Part of him knew that he was about to die, the other part refused to accept it, refused to give in to the reality that he was going to perish. He had been attacked before, ambushes were nothing new to the boy.

With a whirl that bespoke a practiced terror, grace and speed brought to a higher metric than should have been possible, given wings by a panic that seared through him like liquid ice. Empty robe sleeves flapped about for a brief moment as the boy saw the incoming figure, and leaped away and to the side, staring at the new threat, focusing on it. The sleeves were full a second later with arms that held a wand and a small steak knife, wand in his left, knife in his right.

He crouched slightly, feet planted, weight balanced directly in the center, ready to leap anywhere. His eyes were focused on the newcomer in a panic, pupils moving towards the outer rim of his wide eyes rapidly like an amorphous blob, fueled by his rush of adrenaline. Something green and biting had just come at him out of nowhere, had almost killed him.

His mind was feeling foggy, dense, dark. It was feeling angry, and he was torn between embracing the feeling, loving the safety it promised, the shield of blind fury at a world that kept trying to snuff out the little candle of life that he so desperately shielded, or feeling repulsed by the feeling, and the lack of clarity and thought it provided. His teeth gritted together, and he prepared for a fight.

He had heard the incoming figure say something about them being jay? Kaegen's mind rapidly connected dots, from jay, to blue jay, to bird. Bird, then. Bird had asked what Kaegen's name was. This boy was trying to kill him, and didn't even know his name.

"Kaegen Deathmote, Fens-Born Scarf-Wielder. H-"

Kaegen stopped. No, not the rest. He didn't deserve the rest. His voice was raspy and hoarse and quiet. Not at all pleasant, and not at all easy to hear.

Jays eyes went big as soon as they saw the knife and the wand, back in the manor they were used to evil witches and wizards threatening them with their wands but rarely a knife! The only times they have seen someone being threatened by a knife is in the secret conference rooms on the second floor of the manor. There were some pretty ugly stuff that has happened in those rooms with knife or not...  A sudden memory crossed their mind,  it had only happened last year; Jay Victoria was in the vent watching the ‘evil witch’ do some gnarly stuff on a guy, they remembered lots of screaming and biting and blood. But the most important part that they remembered was when the evil man eater witch saw them and made a long cut on their palm. Though, not too long after that Sir Victoria killed the lady.

“Don’t kill me!” Jay said, or else I will kill you if I have to... they thought. This guy was a bit scary, but the jitters went away as he said his name. Kaegen Deathmote... Jay liked the name, it was interesting. And it was literally the only thing they could properly make out from the sentence. Hopefully this guy wasn’t going to injure them in any way or be an arse, for a magical school like Hogwarts people like Deathmote were rare. No one else would take out a knife or have twigs in their hair. When was the last time he took a shower? They thought. The more they let their eyes adjust to Deathmote the more they realized how messy and pale he was. His nails were really really long.

“I am very sorry, Deathmote. I didn’t mean to kill you or anything like that with this...” Jay then decided, I’m going to try to make a new friend! As the end of the year was approaching they figured that they would need more friends. One friend wasn’t enough.

'Don't kill me'? What kind of person would say that, what kind of person would try to kill you and then say don't kill me when they failed? What kind of person was this and why should he care? It was odd, it was confusing for an attacker to plead for their lives, and Kaegen hated the confusing. Too many things were all too confusing and it made him feel stupid, ignorant. He hated feeling stupid and weak, hated it more than almost anything else.

He was going to destroy the boy in front of him and laugh, he was going to spit in the plea and demonstrate what a predator was, make it clear how much stronger he was. His opponent had literally just pleaded for his life, he knew that he was going to be defeated, he knew that Kaegen was going to win. It was an invitation to kill, a wonderful invitation that anyone would be a fool to not accept, but for some odd reason, it simply didn't feel right.

It was certainly not a respect for the lives of others. Kaegen had left sick students to be devoured before, he had no reason to not strike, but the begging was throwing him off. Did the other boy have a plan? Was he waiting for Kaegen to make the first move so that he could follow up, and finish him off? Was there an ambush waiting just a few steps ahead of him?

It became even more confusing when the other boy not only apologized, but claimed to not have been trying to kill him. Really? A biting green disk had just almost eaten off his own neck, but this newcoming assassin was trying to claim that it was an accident? An unintentional near-homicide?

Kaegen stayed where he was, although the inhuman black mass in the center of his eyes started to slowly retreat.

"Don't lie to me. I know what you are."

A bit of anger and frustration started to build up, Jays real self started to take over. For once I try to be nice and apologize but what I get in return is this? They took a deep breath and dropped the frisbee. Jay could only remember ‘Tarantallegra’ at the moment, but they sure did have fists and legs. What was this guy thinking?

“Don't lie to me. I know what you are."

Did they just hear him say that? Jay Victoria’s hands became fists. Their breathing started to become uneven and loud. No one will listen to me or let me have a chance at fixing my mistakes... They looked straight at Deathmotes dark eyes.

You know nothing of who I am! We aren’t in the same house, year, and I have never even talked to you! Bloody hell! It was an accident. I was just playing frisbee on my own and I accidentally threw it here,” Jay said, in almost every word their voice seemed to get louder. They just wanted to strangle him, at this point! Jay Victoria’s old self was taking over. If this guy wanted to really fight, then so be it. If he killed them, then he would probably get caught and sent to Azkaban or something, but if it went the other way then... They could perhaps escape with the help of their guardians evil friends! Stop thinking of that stuff! Jay mentally scolded themself.

Please, don’t kill me. I don’t feel like dying today,” they said once again in a much more calmer voice. They put their hands up in the air in defeat, “I don’t have any secret weapons on me so calm down...

Yeah. This was a fight. He could hear the heavy breathing, practically smell the adrenaline he knew was building. All creatures did that, this was a common reaction to something like this. Kaegen knew exactly what was going on, and although it terrified him, he also welcomed it, in an odd way. You didn't breathe like that if you were scared, you didn't breathe like that if you were calm and peaceful. That was the breathing of a raging beast, the breathing of a wounded boar, an enraged bear.

Kaegen didn't care about the personal lives of others, he didn't care about talking to people to learn about them. He made a judgement as quickly as possible, he decided if someone was a threat, he reacted accordingly. Who cared about years, or houses, or experiences? Who cared about feelings, emotions and motivations? What mattered was intent, what mattered was which way their adrenaline would push them, towards fight or flight.

The boy calmed down enough to say that he didn't want to die, which was something, anyway. The breathing calmed down, the aggression petered out. But there had been that moment, the moment of fury that proved that there was something there, that there was something that could fight, or attack, or kill in those fingers.

"I don't care who you are.

He only cared what the person was. Foe, death witch, neutral, ally. The what was what mattered. Not the who. The who only mattered with friends.
