Just a Minor Bruise
Saskia walked down the corridors, holding her wrist in place with her other hand. As of now, it was definitely broken. She knew that because she tried bending it back and forth a few times. It hurt. A lot. She really needed a lot more self-control, these days.
It all started in Flying class. It wasn’t really surprising, considering how many incidents there were in that class. Regardless, her own injury wasn’t too uncommon. Many students lost control of their brooms, especially when they were trying it out for the first time. In her case, she swerved on her broom as she tried to go back on ground, and didn’t exactly have a perfect landing after that. She didn’t think too many kids saw her, seeing as how it was near the end of classes, and she was one of the last people to leave the grounds, so at least she was spared the embarrassment of having everyone see her in such a sad state. She wasn’t sure whether she needed to blame herself or the faulty school brooms for that mishap. But maybe it was both.
However, the Hufflepuff was fortunate she didn’t have too much of a serious injury. She recalled a rumour about one student crashing down so hard they had to stay in the Hospital Wing for a full month. That meant they couldn’t attend classes, and they couldn’t even move from their bed until they recovered. It was safe to say that she did not want to be in that person’s shoes at all. She couldn’t imagine staying in one place for a whole month- how would she pass the time? She’d just be looking at the same old scenery every single day, and it was sure to make her get even more agitated and restless than she was normally.
After walking a considerable distance, she finally reached the Hospital Wing. There weren’t too many patients residing there, she observed. The nurse was currently tending to some of the students, so she decided to step in the room and wait until they were done.
It only took a few seconds for one of the nurses to finally notice her.
“Come in!” the nurse called out.
Saskia walked closer, still cradling her wrist in her hand. Upon seeing the wrist, the nurse simply nodded.
“This way, dear. I’ll check up on you soon,” the nurse said, pointed towards one of the few vacant beds.
The girl nodded back, walking to the bed. She didn’t know whether to lie down or to simply sit and wait for the nurse to treat her. But seeing as she wasn’t in too much of a critical condition, she decided to sit instead.
Saskia carefully looked at her wrist, mostly as a way to distract herself. She really wished she brought something with her to keep herself busy. Even one of her textbooks would have been nice. But at least the wait wouldn’t be too long.

Isaiah decided that the Hospital Wing was boring.
Beds lay in neat rows across both walls, dressed in clean white sheets, looking so crisp Isaiah wouldn’t have been surprised if they had been ironed. The curtains were the same – identical in every way. Even the nurse looked like she had come straight out of washing machine. Isaiah grinned at the thought of living inside a washing machine, imagining the thought in his head.
Sighing, he sat further down into his sheets and wished for a third time that he was good at Transfiguration.
He was never good in any classes, to be honest. He didn’t have the ability to sit still for hours on end and listen to the sound of a droning voice. Isaiah was a hands-on person and liked to touch everything around him. He occupied himself by tapping desks and scratching his name into his desk. But these activities always managed to get him in trouble.
This lesson had been even worse. The Transfiguration professor was so boring, Isaiah could feel his eyes drooping slowly. He tried to force them open, using his fingers to pry them open, but no luck. Slowly, slowly, he fell asleep.
It had been a good sleep. He had dreamt about flying high in the air, so high that he could touch the clouds. But then, somehow, he began to fall. Down, down, down. But instead of hitting the floor, he landed on a duck. A large duck, fluffy and yellow. More like a duckling, Isaiah had realized. He had told the duck to giddy up, and it had, like a fluffy, yellow horse with an orange beak. A peculiar dream – and a short one.
“Isaiah Lewis! Wake up this instant!’
The professor had been fuming. The students around him laughed, and Isaiah could feel his cheeks go bright red.
“Sorry,” he had told the professor timidly.
But the professor wouldn’t take it. Grabbing Isaiah by the shoulder of his robes, the professor had dragged him up to the very front of the class. Isaiah looked down at his fellow students, who’s lips were bursting at the barely controlled laughter, and felt very, completely, alone.
“Isaiah! Since you think you are so incredibly smart that you can sleep in my class, I would like you to turn this cup into a rat. Do you understand?”
Isaiah had nodded miserably. He didn’t even know the spell for such a transformation. Gathering what he knew, Isaiah pointed his wand at the pale pink teacup.
“Poculum!”
Nothing had happened to the teacup of course, but Isiah had broken three toes, and had been send off to the hospital wing.
Isaiah could sit in bed no longer. Using a crutch, he hobbled out of bed, and down the row of beds. He soon found a student who looked roughly the same age as him, and he turned and walked into her section.
“Hello, I’m Isaiah. Why are you here?”

Saskia sighed, not even bothering to sit back against the bed. She was tempted to just lie on top of the bed without pulling the blankets over her, but she didn't want to look weird in front of everyone else. But what else could she do? It wasn't like she could go explore the place, as much as she'd want to do that. She wasn't sure if there were any rules against her opening up the medicine cabinet just to see what was in there, but she figured the nurses might assume she wanted to steal from it. Either that, or she'd just be told to sit down again.
She silently groaned to herself. Only a few minutes passed in the hospital wing, and she was already bored. She just wanted the nurses to hurry up so she could leave, though the last time she checked, they were busy treating someone with more grave conditions than she had. At least that was what it looked like, judging by how completely red the student looked. It was a very vibrant red, and they resembled more of a tomato than if they were blushing from head to toe. Well, at least she got away with a broken wrist instead of whatever that was.
It wasn't until a boy around her age came up to her that her boredom may as well be relieved.
“Hello, I’m Isaiah. Why are you here?”
Saskia raised her eyebrows. He was straight to the point, and it wasn't something she often found in other people. It wasn't bad- in fact, she preferred it much more if people were just honest with her. But it made her wonder why he came up to her. Was he just trying to figure out what happened with everyone? Or did he just want to make conversation because he was bored? Either way, it was only polite for her to respond to his question.
"Flying accident. Didn't exactly nail the landing, as you may notice here," she replied, chuckling softly as she gestured to her broken wrist, which she managed to hold up with her other hand so she could show it to Isaiah.
"What about you? How did you end up here?" she asked, sitting up straighter to have a better look at the boy. He was using crutches, so he might have also injured himself like she did. Still, she wanted to know for the sake of her curiosity.

The girl raised an eyebrow when Isaiah spoke to her – and he was instantly jealous. He had always wanted to be able raise one eyebrow at a time. He’d never been successful, though. Yet, he thought to himself. One day I’ll get it.
“Flying accident. Didn’t exactly nail the landing, as you may notice here,” the girl laughed softly, and pointed to her hand, which was clearly broken, then, using her other, un-broken hand, she lifted it up for Isaiah could see.
Isaiah smiled too. The wrist looked painful though, but he was bad at balancing too. A good Beater – maybe. But a horrible choice for any other positions.
“What about you? How did you end up here?” The girl sat up straighter, as if to have a better look at Isaiah, and looked curiously at the crutches.
Isaiah looked down at his left foot, covered up with white cotton bandages, and then up again, to look at the girl. She had pale, alabaster skin, hazel eyes that Isaiah found quite pretty, and long, dark brown hair that ran down her back. He decided that he liked her immensely. She seemed like the type of person to have a laugh with and seemed kind enough. She was a Hufflepuff, though, a house he had never really related to. He was as patient as a toddler, and horrible at helping people. He never seemed to be able to understand them. But that doesn’t mean I shouldn’t like her, Isaiah thought. After all, my sister’s a Slytherin!
Isaiah opened his mouth to tell the girl of his incident, and instantly shut it again. A wave of embarrassment swept over him, and he suddenly felt very hot and flustered. Would she think him a fool if he told her about the teacup? Probably. And that wasn’t even considering the dream he dreamt; she would think that he’s outright crazy!
He began to tap his uninjured right foot quickly against the Hospital Wing, thinking. Maybe he should tell another story? A story about him dueling a Third Year, or – no; he thought firmly. Just tell her the truth. She isn’t going to hate you for falling asleep in class and mucking up a spell. He took a deep breath a turned to look at the girl.
“I fell asleep in class,” he admitted. “Then the professor got angry, and I had to preform a Transfiguration spell in front of the whole class. But I mucked it up and broke my toes.”
He grinned to cover his embarrassment and realized with a jolt that he didn’t know the girl’s name.
“What’s your name?”

Saskia nodded. She never really liked Transfiguration. Paying attention to complicated equations and theories weren't things she was good at, and she always found herself close to sleeping or, rarely, already asleep when it came to those classes. Either that, or she constantly fidgeted in her spot so much that the professor had to tell her to stop. That was why she preferred Charms and Defense Against the Dark Arts- they were action-based and purely instinctual, aside from having to memorize things, such as wand gestures and incantations. She couldn't remember a moment where she was bored in those classes, and learning about spells were cool, too.
"Yeah, Transfiguration sucks. Especially with a professor like that," she laughed, hoping to brighten up the mood with her comment. She hoped she didn't offend the boy, in case he actually liked that class for some reason, but she already assumed he didn't, based on how he told her he slept in that class.
When Isaiah asked for her name, it occured to her that she already knew Isaiah's name, but he didn't know hers. Although at the time, she didn't even know if he was going to stay at her section, or if he was just going to leave to go ask someone else what happened to them. But now that she could see he was staying, it was reasonable for her to introduce herself properly.
"Oh, right. I'm Saskia," she responded, giving one of her usual perpetual smiles at the boy. She would have given her hand to shake with his hand, but with her current injury, she felt that it would have been difficult, and he still had crutches, which would have made any kind of handshaking awkward instead.
After some seconds passed, she figured she may as well ask a question she was holding onto for a while. It didn't hurt to keep the conversation going when there wasn't anything else to do, and if there was someone already there to talk to.
"So, have you been here before? Or is this your first time?"

[quote]“Yeah, Transfiguration sucks. Especially with a professor like that.”
When the girl laughed, Isaiah’s nervousness settled down, and he felt the hotness of embarrassment leave him. He smiled in relief at the girl’s reaction. He hadn’t realised before, but if the girl had liked Transfiguration, it would’ve been a slightly more awkward conversation. Knowing that now, he reflected that it was lucky of him that the girl wasn’t a fan of that class.
“Oh, right. I’m Saskia,” the girl added, smiling. A pretty name, Isaiah thought.
“Hi,” he replied, feeling slightly foolish as he stood there, leaning on one of his crutches, with a kind-hearted girl who had the kindness to strike a conversation with him. The silence grew, and Isaiah found himself wondering if he should’ve said something else. Or should he say something now? Luckily, the girl spoke up soon afterwards.
“So, have you been here before? Or is this your first time?”
Isaiah had been in the Hospital Wing before. But, like this incident, he had been embarrassed of it, and so far, he had told no one. But this girl wasn’t going to make fun of him. And even if she did laugh, it would be with him. He was sure of it, if she could act so kind to his first story, surely she’ll act the same to the second?”
“Actually, yeah I have. A while ago, at the beginning of the year, I tipped over a candle and burnt my arm. But it wasn’t that bad, and it was fixed up really quickly. The real problem was that I burnt some schoolbooks. The librarian was furious.”
Isaiah smiled at the memory. It was painful, and he had almost touched the roof when he jumped in surprise to the sudden pain. But it was gone the next day, all they had to do was apply a smooth, green gel over the burnt area, and the redness slowly faded away. The librarian was another story. She still gave Isaiah withering looks every time he entered the library.
“So, if you don’t like Transfiguration, what’s your favourite class?”

Saskia smiled along with the boy. The incident sounded painful, but she imagined that it must have been amusing to see from another perspective. She herself may not have burned herself, but she did get into a lot of accidents in her childhood that involved many injuries on her part. In hindsight, they were stupid mistakes that she could have avoided if she was more attentive to her surroundings, but now that she was in Hogwarts, she tried to be careful not to end up getting severely hospitalized. Evidently, she wasn't doing a good job at keeping up with that plan, but it could have been worse.
"Well, hopefully, the librarian knew you weren't purposefully trying to set the books on fire just so you could create a weird bonfire in the library," she joked. But now that she said that out loud, she wondered if anyone actually tried to do that. The school dated back centuries ago, and it would be surprising if nobody had ever done it before. She decided she'd look into it if she even remembered to do so afterwards.
“So, if you don’t like Transfiguration, what’s your favourite class?”
It wasn't too hard for Saskia to answer the question. From the moment she heard about what she would be learning in Hogwarts, she knew she would immediately like Defence Against the Dark Arts. She may not have known much about it at the time, but she could tell it would be an exciting class. Something about casting spells and defending herself in battle just made her eager to learn more about what magic had to offer. It also helped that the professor was good at their job and didn't constantly need a textbook to teach the students.
"I'd say Defence Against the Dark Arts. It's a cool class, and there's less boring lectures and complicated formulas to memorize, unlike a certain class," she responded, grinning sheepishly as she gave a not-so-subtle jab at her least favourite class. "Charms is a close second, though."
"What's your favourite class?" she asked back.

Saskia smiled when Isaiah mentioned him incident.
"Well, hopefully, the librarian knew you weren't purposefully trying to set the books on fire just so you could create a weird bonfire in the library," she said, jokingly.
Isaiah grinned. He didn't think the librarian would care if it was an accident or not. She wasn't the most forgiving person. Her reaction was still clear in his memory - pale lips pinched together tightly, thick, dark eyebrows furrowed down.
"Well, the books were magical," Isaiah said. "She could've probably re-made them somehow. But it doesn't really matter anymore. It happened a while ago."
Saskia replied quickly when he asked her about her favourite class.
"I'd say Defence Against the Dark Arts. It's a cool class, and there's less boring lectures and complicated formulas to memorize, unlike a certain class," the girl paused for a second, grinning. Isaiah smiled back too, at the obvious comment to Transfiguration. But afterwards, she added that "Charms is a close second, though."
Isaiah nodded. Reasonable choices. Defense Against the Dark Arts was definitely up there for him. The class was interesting, with lots of action, and the teachers of the subject seemed to skip the long speeches that others seemed to love. He didn't get bored in Defense Against the Dark Arts, and tried hard when it came to the practical part of the lesson. But, unfortunately, he had never received high marks in Defense Against the Dark Arts, not matter how much effort he invested in the class. He had never been good at wand work, or work in particular.
Charms was a different story. True, it fell in a higher position than Transfiguration, and he managed to stay awake for the entire class. But it bored him. Unlike Defense Against the Dark Arts, where he was doing interesting spells, Charms seemed to loose his interest quickly. The spells in Charms were probably the most useful spells he would ever learn, but still, he was horrible at that too.
"I like Defense Against the Dark Arts too," he told Saskia. "There's lots of interesting spells, but, honestly, I'm not very good at it."
"What's your favourite class?" the girl asked, and Isaiah had to think for a bit. He wasn't the smartest kid, and a lot of the classes weren't his strong point. But there was one that he was pretty good at.
"Potions, definitely. For some reason, and I have no idea why, I'm pretty good at Potions."

"Well, the books were magical. She could've probably re-made them somehow. But it doesn't really matter anymore. It happened a while ago."
Saskia nodded. "That's true. Those kinds of accidents are easy to fix with some magic."
Her father once mentioned how mundane incidents such as these didn't need much effort to solve. The kind of injuries that Saskia and Isaiah had could easily be fixed with a simple spell or a potion, although potions could be inconvenient at times. She remembered the last time she needed to drink a Skele-Gro. It was probably the most uncomfortable experience she ever went through, and ever since that time, she told herself she would never get herself injured again. Of course, she went back on her word this time, but she hoped she would be able to get away with a healing spell rather than another Skele-Gro.
Magical incidents, on the other hand, were harder to mend. She remembered the last few times she visited her father's hospital, where she encountered the same people stuck in their beds. A lot of them had rather gruesome injuries, including a person with a completely displaced arm, though there were interesting cases, such as the moment when someone's head shrank to a size of a baseball. It was a shock to see when she first saw them, but after several visits, she grew accustomed to them. She even managed to befriend some of the patients there, once she got past the oddities of their conditions. It was interesting to talk to them, to say the least.
The girl nodded at Isaiah's response. Potions was a decent class, and while she didn't have any strong feelings towards it, she liked it enough. It did require a lot of calculation and practice to get right, but at least it was less tedious than Transfiguration. Besides, Potions had plenty of hands-on work, which Saskia appreciated.
"Well, fair enough. If you're good at a class, you'll probably end up liking it as well."
Saskia was about to think of another question to ask when she barely saw the nurse walk towards their direction . Sitting up straight, she took a deep breath. This was either going to end well or painfully. From her previous knowledge, she knew it wasn't going to be pleasant, but
The nurse eventually came to a stop, briefly pausing when she saw the two kids. Regardless, the nurse didn't seem too surprised to see them together, and she came forward to look at the two more closely.
"How may I help you two?" She asked calmly.
Saskia simply gestured to her broken wrist. She didn't think she needed to say anything else to explain what happened.
The nurse simply nodded. "Give me your arm."
The girl complied, letting go of her wrist to hold her arm out properly. She was secretly relieved that she didn't have to drink any horrible potions, but she wasn't sure if this would be better or worse than that.
The nurse took her wand and waved it before calling out, "Episkey!"
Saskia grimaced as she felt a sharp pain in her wrist. It was almost like she broke her wrist all over again, except in this case, the bones in her wrist were somehow crashing with each other. Well, that probably wasn't the best way to describe it, considering she didn't know what actually happened there. But after a few seconds, only a tingling sensation remained, and the pain subsided.
She lifted her hand, warily glancing at her wrist. She was sure it worked, but she needed to make sure. Holding her wrist with her other hand, she gently bent her wrist forwards. Surely enough, she didn't feel like her bones were about to crack. That was a good sign.
Turning to the nurse, she gave her an appreciative smile. "Thank you."
The nurse nodded, giving the girl a small smile in return before she turned to Isaiah. "What happened here?"
"Honestas ante honores."

I described the nurse in some more detail here (based on the nurse from HP), and hope you don't mind! I can change anything if needed.
"Well, fair enough. If you're good at a class, you'll probably end up liking it as well.”
Isaiah nodded. That was what he felt about Potions. Since he found it easy to keep up with everyone, and the homework was simple enough, it enjoyed it more, as it meant less effort, and less stress, worrying about if he was falling behind, which he constantly did in Transfiguration class.
A short while after the girl had spoken, the nurse arrived, walking briskly out of her office, and came to an abrupt stop when she reached Isaiah and Saskia.
She was a stern-looking woman, one Isaiah wouldn’t want to receive a detention with. She wore a loose-fitting, dark red clock under a much tighter, stark-white apron. Tied back hair was almost completely covered in a white cap, and she wore a badge of some kind, pinned to the left of her chest.
“How may I help you two?” The nurse asked, in a kinder tone than Isaiah was expecting. Maybe he was wrong to say that she was a strict woman. When Saskia showed her the broken wrist, the nurse nodded.
“Give me your arm,” she said, and after taking out her wand, she called out, “Episkey!”
Isaiah watched Saskia nervously, waiting to see the girl’s reaction. She grimaced slightly but didn’t cry out. Then, she slowly moved her wrist around, testing it to see if it was better, Isaiah presumed. And the nurse’s spell seemed to have worked. Saskia smiled at the woman.
“Thank you,” she said. The nurse smiled back, and then turned round to face Isaiah, who was still standing on the edge of Saskia’s bed, crutches supporting his weight.
“What happened here?” she asked, frowning at the crutches. “Something wrong with your foot, I’m guessing?”
“Broken toes. Three, I think,” Isaiah said sheepishly. “Got caught sleeping in class.”
The nurse motioned for Isaiah to come forward and dragged over a wooden chair.
“Take your shoes and socks off, then place your injured foot on the chair. It’ll be hard to balance, so make sure you keep both your crutches up, so they can support you.”
Isaiah nodded, and, slightly nervous, sat down on the chair, placing his crutches beside the legs, and started to undo his shoelaces. Once his shoes were off, he noticed that he’d worn mis-matched socks today. One white, one black. A random piece of information, but as he began to peel them off, he tried to focus on the colours, to divert his nervousness.
Once his feet were bare, he grabbed his crutches again, and used them to pull himself up into an upright position. Then, making sure that his crutches were steady, he lifted his injured foot up onto the chair.
The nurse, while Isaiah was getting ready, had pulled out a small bottle, with purple-coloured contents. She pulled the cork out swiftly and tipped it into her hand. Out of the bottle came a thick, slow liquid, that landed in the nurses hand. Deftly, she corked the bottle back up again, and crouched down so that she was in level with Isaiah’s foot. Then, she began to rub the purple stuff into Isaiah’s three crooked toes.
“I could’ve just used a spell for this one,” the nurse said. “But you’ve got some splinters loose in there as well, so this stuff will help it. It should be healed in a minute or two, but the pain will stay for a couple of hours. All gone by tomorrow, though.
Isaiah nodded. He could already fell the pain reducing, and as the nurse removed her hands, the toes were miraculously straight again.
“Thank you,” he told the nurse.
"Expect the unexpected. And whenever possible, be the unexpected.”
