Koko liked to think she slept about as well as any other Hogwarts higher year, maybe even as well as some of the younger students, but even she wasn’t so adept at self-deception to convince herself of that when she woke up on the morning of the 10th of June in a cold sweat, pain radiating throughout her arms, every movement of her blankets feeling like phantom legs crawling up her limbs.

She sat in her bed for what had to be a good thirty minutes before she had finally assured her paranoid brain that there were not, in fact, any spiders in the dormitories this evening. Her heart rate slowly slowed back to its resting pattern, and her breathing began to level out.

She leaned over and squinted at her watch, which lay on her nightstand. The sun had to be rising soon, which was just… rather unfortunate. It was too soon to her usual waking time to justify going back to sleep, so instead, Koko got dressed in a tank top and trousers to ready herself for her morning jog around the grounds. Usually, she would have waited, but given that she was still running her hands along her arms to ensure no creepy-crawlies were lounging on her, she figured some fresh air would, at the least, be beneficial — under the guise of patrolling, of course.

Some prefects openly abused their powers. Koko didn’t consider herself one of them, but she did know when privileges were meant to be used. This was clearly one of those times.

In accordance with her principles, the sixth year tiptoed outside. The cool Scottish air was a fresh breath of relief, and she sighed as her slow, quiet walk sped up into a run. Despite the sky only just beginning to lighten with what would turn into a glorious sunrise, Koko wasn’t scared — it wasn’t the dark that was dangerous. Anyone would know that the things lying within darkness were far worse than darkness in itself.

Her perspective held true when her jog took her to the Quidditch Training Pitch — a favourite haunt of hers, really, so it was sad that she hadn’t thought to bring a broom with her. She entered the serene area, slowing down and eventually coming to a stop as she beheld her beloved training pitch in the early vestiges of daylight. She really should have brought a broom…

She gazed about the training pitch, a small smile causing the corners of her eyes to crease, and she folded her arms over her chest — it was a bit chilly now that she was no longer running.

Her smile faded, however, and her brow furrowed when she saw a flash of light. That… wasn’t normal.

'Lumos,' she murmured, trying to get a better look. Light emanated from her wand, and a young student, a first year whose silhouette was slightly familiar, actually, came into view. She remembered the girl from the unofficial Quidditch game she had run, and she knew Miss Brook was certainly not a member of staff, so she had no excuse to be out here so late… early? The difference was insignificant; it was the principle of the matter, really.

Koko crept closer to the younger student and, arms still crossed over her chest, raised an eyebrow. 'Miss Brook?' she asked. 'Pray tell, what are you doing out here so early? Curfew was hours ago.'

Quinn froze as she heard the sound of another person. A whispered noise from the same spot made Quinn wince. As a light beam pointed at her, she desperatly hoped it was another student who wouldn't get her in trouble. Damn! Quinn thought as the person holding the wand came into view. It was Koko Riddle, the 6th year who had hosted the unnoficial quidditch match. Which sadly meant that Koko knew who she was. Quinn bit her lip.
"I-uh-uh." Quinn stammered. Quinn wondered how Minnie had managed to get away with so much trouble and not get caught. Taking a deep breath she tried to think how she could get out of this without a detention.
"With the end of the year exams soon and the stress of the end of my first year coming I needed to be outside and I needed to get away from it all." Quinn said. She hoped that she wouldn't get in too much trouble. Quinn bit her lip and tugged on her hair. She looked down at the ground and at the book she had mended. If only spells were quieter then maybe she wouldn't be in this situation. Quinn stowed her wand in her bag in what she hoped was a sneaky manor.

For a prefect, Koko didn't think she was too awful. She hadn't yet become the scary, no-fun prefect she'd always hated when she was younger – at least, she didn't think she had become that way yet. Judging from Quinn's expression, however, that might not have been the case.

Koko swallowed thickly. Quinn could believe it or not, but she really had very little desire to be the bad guy.

'With the end of the year exams soon and the stress of the end of my first year coming I needed to be outside and I needed to get away from it all.'

Koko tilted her head. She understood, actually. Classes had never come easily for her, so the end of the year tended to be rather stressful for her, too. 'Well, I hope it's not too bad,' Koko said quietly, offering Quinn a smile before she noticed the other girl moving.

Her eyes narrowed when her gaze focused on Quinn's hand.

She could have sworn she'd seen a wand. Which... was fine. Against the rules, yes, but not as inherently dangerous as being out here, alone, with no supervision. So it wasn't the highest priority, but still...

'Say, were you using your wand to help you study? Or did you have it out just in case something came out here? Or... something else?'

Koko thought she was really nice. She was certain some of her peers would have given Quinn detention already. But it was so early in the morning, and between her tiredness and the absurdity of the situation, Koko wasn't sure if she wanted to issue Quinn a detention. That, she decided, would all depend on whatever Quinn said or did.

Quinn thought that she might be able to get out of a detention when Koko gave her a small smile. Maybe with a little acting she could be back in her common room without Koko knowing she had done magic. She was letting herself have hope. And then Koko noticed her wand. Damn! Quinn thought.
"I-uh" Quinn stuttered. How do I get out of this? Quinn wondered. Quinn decided that she could maybe leave without a detention if she fudged the truth a little.
"I'm really bad at the spell reparo and I was practicing on some broken objects..." Quinn trailed off not sure if Koko would bye it.
"I should probably go back up to the castle now... My head definetly feels clearer, the fresh air helped." Quinn grabbed her bag and gave what she hoped was an innocent smile to Koko. She shoved her wand even deeper into her bag and hoped that Koko couldn't read through her lie to easily. Or at all. Quinn wondered what had called her over in the first place, hopefully not- Oh crap! What if it was beacuse she heard the sound of me breaking something and then saw a flash of light! I'm dead, gone, finished. Quinn thought. Quinn hoped her face didn't show the newfound terror in her head. I really don't want a detention this near to the end of the school year. I havn't gotten any yet so why now! Quinn thought with a feeling of hope getting crushed into a fine powder every second.

The tired prefect stared blankly at the young girl when she began sputtering. Her smile had faded, and now that she had stopped running, she was beginning to become cold in her tank top. When Quinn offered reasoning, Koko did truly think it was probably not true at all, but she hardly wanted to give her a detention. She was still exhausted.

But the girl's words kept getting harder to believe, and the way she kept shoving her hand (and, presumably, her wand) into her bag made Koko sigh aloud. '...So I don't like to give out detentions. I think that most of the time, it's lesson enough to deal with the effects of rule-breaking on your own.'

She wasn't finished. 'But by breaking the rules, you're essentially accepting the possibility of being caught and dealing with the consequences.' Did she sound too snotty? Too responsible? 'I'll send you an owl within the coming week regarding the detention – which you will be getting. Terrible things have crawled the grounds at night, Miss Brook. I don't want you getting hurt.'

Her still illuminated, she began to leave the Quidditch Training Pitch, her shoes squeaking slightly against the dewy grass. She turned and called back to Quinn, 'If you'd like me to accompany you to the castle, I can.'
