The rehearsal rooms grand high ceilings didn't shelter any other aspiring performers today, meaning that Cass's seemingly perfect timing left them with space to preform alone. They wore one of their favourite blue knitted sweaters with geese on it (Geese are truly terrifying creatures and worthy of awe. They are also very silly sometimes, which was probably why Cass liked them so much), black pants and boots. Maybe not a traditional outfit for preforming in, and certainly a little stuffy in the summer but it was what they felt comfortable in. Their small hands grasped a violin case tightly, and betrayed the only sign of their nerves.

It had been far too long since they had played. Back at home, they had practised every day since they were ten, and it was one of the only consistent things in their schedule. But after coming to Hogwarts it was just like... So much had changed, and so had they. It was difficult to be standing in the same position, holding the same violin when they felt so different. But they missed the music. They were certainly no expert player, and felt even worse after almost a year with very little practice. Back before they came to Hogwarts, they had plans to try out for the local orchestra (not the muggle one of course) but those had sort of fallen through when they came here.

With a deep breath in and out, they opened the violin case. It was a little dusty, but not too bad since they had made an effort to ask the house elves to clean it every two weeks or so. They tightened the bow hair, and lifted the violin out of its case to rest under their chin. It still fit just as perfectly as ever. In, and out. Just breathe. They lifted up their bow, and drew it across the strings, trying to remember the old warm ups they did. At first, it sounded terrible. Some of the portraits on the wall drew back, pulling their curtains across in obvious disappointment. Cass tryed not to let it affect them. The less of an audience the better right?

But ever so slowly, their playing started to sound a little closer to what it should. They were just beginning to remember how to get their technique back, piece by piece. A few of the portaits that had hid re-emerged, but Cass stayed stubbornly not watching their faces. By the time they had finished warming up, they felt just the slightest bit more confident. And better somehow. Like a weight had been lifted from their shoulders.

Inara happened to be wandering around the corridors, and she heard sounds coming from the rehearsal room. The Sound of Strings...

Inara hadn't taken out her cello for quite some while since coming to Hogwarts - it wasn't exactly convenient to carry around - but for the chance to maybe make a new friend, as well as get some practice...? It would be worth it.

She quietly walked back to the Ravenclaw Common Room to grab it. Her Kitten Artemis had actually fallen asleep on the case, which made Inara laugh. She gently pushed Artemis off ( And after some angry meowing and minor scratching) later Inara had gotten her cello and walked out of the common room.

She was actually quite excited to go to the rehearsal room, she had never been. A magical rehearsal room sounded amazing to practice in, honestly, and she wondered how she'd never found the time to go in there.... it was always Duelling, or Homework, or Homework, Or LOTS of Procrastinating...

She entered quietly, not wanting to bother whoever was in there, as they were practicing. She recognized the instrument long before even going inside, It was a violin. She had heard them all too often. Her brother played violin, her sister played violin, a bunch of her friends played violin.... and it WAS a beautiful instrument. But personally, she thought it was a BIT overrated. Not that she would tell anyone that.

As she walked in, she accidentally tripped over a music stand. "Whoops."

Well now that she had made a very dramatic entrance she might as well introduce herself...

"Umm Hello! I'm Inara... sorry for the.. disturbance?"

EmmaLee was rushing as fast as her legs would carry her considering that she was rolling her midnight blue cello case behind her. It wasn't like she didn't do this every week day, granted, she wasn't usually this late and being late to practice her cello meant being late to practice dueling which meant being late to study for exams and exams were so close. Anyway, let's just get there.

As she ran, the cello case glittered with stars and blue morpho butterflies flew back and forth across the "night" sky. The case, and the ocean blue cello within, had been a gift from her stepfather the year her married her mother and it was one of her favorite gifts she'd ever received. It being on wheels had been an added benefit especially when she was eight and had trouble lifting her case on her own, but even now when running with the full weight of the thing would have slowed her down.

When she approached the rehearsal room, she sighed for a moment as she heard the unmistakable sound of a violin and then of a girl's voice. Ah. Not only had someone taken her spot, but someone else had walked in on someone taking her spot. She giggled inwardly to herself. Well, maybe the violinist wouldn't mind if they had two practice partners. Most of the Hogwarts musical population were eager to find a new music friend or two. If they did mind though, she could just do it in her room, though she preferred the company of the rehearsal room portraits, especially a lady in black who sometimes gave her very helpful advice.

EmmaLee popped her head in and saw a girl that she recognized from the Ravenclaw dueling team, with what appeared to be her own cello, that was lovely, though she did not know her name, and another person with brown hair, who was the violinist. "Ello." She said, quietly from the doorframe. Maybe Hogwarts needed more than one rehearsal room, she thought with another inward giggle.

Well. That was their peaceful moment gone. Disturbed by two cello players? What were the chances? Still, the more the merrier they guessed. It wasn't just their rehearsal room after all, and it was certainly large enough for others. One of them proceeded to immediately trip over a music stand. An interesting way of making an entrance for sure. "You okay?" they asked "My name is Cass. Cass Ito". They lowered their instrument as they watched the scene. The other girl was clearly running from the sound of her footsteps, but slowed down when she entered the room.

"Greetings to you as well" they jokingly preformed an elaborate bow, violin still in hand. "Come to witness my grand orchestra of one?" they laughed and held their bow out like a conductors baton in a great sweeping motion. The cello case one of the girls was holding was very pretty and very extremely blue. She must be a ravenclaw or something, for no self respecting person from another house could own a case that blue. Oh well, at least she was showing house pride, even if it was misplaced. Anyone with eyes could see that Slytherin was the best for miles.

Now that they were all here though, Cass wondered if they should ask the girls if they wanted to practise together. Or even play a song. It had been a long time since they played in a group, and deep down they worried they might not be able to keep up with the other two. Maybe they could give the others the hard parts and frame it as being gracious and welcoming? That should work. Still. What if they flat out declined? It would turn the atmosphere from slightly awkward to full blown move-countries-to-get-away-from awkward. Perhaps they should wait for one of the others to ask.

Inara smiled a bit, pleased that Cass, whom she now knew the name of, was okay with them joining. To add onto that, another girl had walked in! Another Cello player! Inara stopped to admire the beautiful blue cello case as well as cello that the girl owned - One might assume she was a Ravenclaw, but Inara knew she was a Hufflepuff, because she recognized her from duelling, even though she'd never actually duelled her.

Inara had a blue case too - it was light blue, but a pretty plain one. It made up for that by being covered with cute stickers, some of which had worn off. It also did not have wheels. Unfortunately.

Sometimes Inara had tired of carrying both her cello and her really heavy trunk when walking until she realized there was a MUCH more efficient way to carry both.

And Her Violinist friends used to complain that THEIR instruments were heavy.

Seeing and thinking about the violin, it brought back memories of when she used to play the violin - back when she was way younger.. she had quit though, and she kind of regretted it, but Cello was a lot more fun for her.

Putting those thoughts aside, Inara tentatively suggested.. "perhaps we could play a song together?"

EmmaLee giggled at the violinist's joke and flourish with their bow. How often had she been an "orchestra of one" in this grand room? As the violinist seemed welcoming, she stepped inside with her cello case and softly closed the door behind her, giving a small wave to the portrait of the woman in black and some of the other portraits she had played in front of before.

How many times HAD she played in this room? Almost two years worth of week days now, only missing when she was sick? Was it this that brought her to the fact that she had already been at Hogwarts for two years and would begin her third in but a couple of months. Geez. How time goes.

As she faded out of her thinking, she looked over the violinist, Cass, who seemed to want to say something more but was unsure and then she looked over to the duelist, who she had missed the name of, as she brought up all of them playing together.

"That would be wonderful if Cass agrees. They were 'ere first after all." EmmaLee said, gesturing to Cass. "I'm EmmaLee LeDames, by the way." She said with a bright smile to both, then focusing on Inara she said, "I did miss your name though, miss, if you said it before. I recognize you from dueling."

Cello-playing girl suggested that they play a song together, and Cass grinned at the others. Despite their worries over not being able to keep up, they still wanted to at least try. After all, it might be fun. Neither of the girls looked like the type to judge them for being so out of practice anyway. "Of course I agree" they fidgeted with their bow "Did you have one in mind?". They mentally kicked themself for asking instead of suggesting an easy song they would be able to keep up with. Oh well, it was done now. And they were nothing if not able to rise to a challenge.

So both of the other students were duelists- being on a sports team must be so cool. They made a mental note to turn up and watch a duel sometime. It would be good to support their house, and to help them understand more about dueling. Plus, watching people's duels was just cool. Seeing all the spells they would learn one day used in action was something special. They didn't really know what sport they wanted to do yet, but broom racing was kinnddd of the one they were leaning towards though, since it was basically dueling on broomsticks. The best of both things.

"I have some sheet music somewhere in this case" they began to frantically dig through the side pocket on their violin case, occasionally pulling out something to look at it and then shoving it back in there. That much paper should logically not be able to fit in a case that small. At one point they even pulled out a rubber duck. Now how that got in there was a long story. After a good five minutes, they had a small sheath of papers gathered. "Why don't we all think of some suggestions on what we want to play and then share them? they asked. It was probably the fairest way to pick a song after all.

EmmaLee thought for a moment as she placed her cello near Cass and walked to one side of the room to get a chair. Once she had placed the chair on their left, she rolled her eyes at herself and brandished her wand to wingardium leviosa a chair to Cass' right for the other cellist.

Even though she had known about magic all her life and had now been to this school for two years, EmmaLee still couldn't get out of the habit of doing things the non-magique way. She was too used to not using magic and was really even less used to using her wand, which was why she carried this huge thing while running down the hall rather than floating it with her. It seemed silly to her now. She briefly wondered if she would always be this way or would she eventually get used to being able to use her magic.

She shrugged to herself as she sat down and began readying her bow and tuning her cello. "Well, Greensleeves and Minuet are fairly easy to start a new trio with," EmmaLee suggested as she went through the motions. "Fur Elise is a good one, as well." She said with a smile to both of them. Her smile turned into a playful smirk as she pointed to a portrait in the corner of an older lady in a pink dress.

"Madame Harrison loves a good Greensleeves." She said, in a tone that suggested an inside joke. In kind, the woman in the portrait turned her head and hid behind her hand for a moment before turning back with a smile.

"Cheeky." The woman in the portrait said, before waving a hand in a "shoo" kind of gesture. "Get on with it then."

Inara smiled brightly. She was happy that they had all agreed to play a song together.
Realizing she hadn't responded to EmmaLee, she blushed a bit in embarrassment. "I- Oh Uh, I'm Inara. Inara Yang. I recognize you from Duelling as well. It's very nice to meet you."

Inara waited for Cass to find the sheet music as she began to think of songs... What songs could they play....?

EmmaLee was quicker. She pulled over a chair, then levitated another one over. Inara suspected she had forgotten about using magic. She did that sometimes too...

Wait. Had EmmaLee pulled over a chair for her?? Inara almost blushed again. The gesture was so kind - but now Inara felt that she wasn't doing anything productive, just standing there.

"I- Oh- Uh- Thank You, EmmaLee!" Inara responded quickly, beginning to unpack her cello, as she listened to EmmaLee suggest songs. Once she had finished, she glanced over at the portrait that had been mentioned.... she could never quite get over the fact that they TALKED.

"Well, if so, we should play that!!" she responded brightly, after hearing that the portrait enjoyed that particular song.

Gosh. If Dad could hear that now, he'd be shocked. Whoever heard of a portrait liking a specific song? she thought to herself. But then again, this was Hogwarts. She hadn't quite adjusted yet.

EmmaLee's suggestions turned out to be ones Cass had never even heard of. Perhaps they were muggle ones? Or just little known. Either way, they didn't want to be rude. And besides, muggle music couldn't be so bad if the portraits liked it. "If Madam Harrison likes greensleves, then greensleves we shall play" they said, dramatically bowing in the direction of the portrait. Perhaps bowing with the violin in hand wasn't the best idea though. They had somehow managed to poke themself in the nose with the bow on the way down. They rubbed their poor nose and cast a how-could-you-do-this-to-me-old-friend look at their violin before turning back to the girls.

"Alright, so it's decided then?" they asked. Hopefully EmmaLee or Inara had some extra sheet music lying around for a completely different instrument than the one they played. Cass had heard of the muggle "Clinterhet" that could magically give you information on anything you wanted, but it wouldn't work within Hogwarts grounds anyway. Besides, they would never stoop to the low of using muggle technology. Even if a tiny part of them was curious. If sheet music was unable to be found, then Cass supposed a quick run up to the library would be in order.

Although of course, if the library had muggle books that shouldn't be allowed at all. They made a mental note to go look one day, for scientific purposes of course. Perhaps this song wasn't muggle at all though. Basing their plans on an assumption was never going to work out anyway. Confident that the whole sheet music issue would work itself out, they smiled at the others.
