An Illusionary Night

Rowan lifted her chin and straightened her back as she walked towards the Slytherin table, the strange hat's words echoing in her brain. "Slytherin!", it had bellowed for the entire hall to hear. The young witch slid off the wooden stool-- which she realized she had been gripping very tightly as she sat-- and began the walk that felt more suitable as an expedition. Rowan felt the eyes of hundreds on her figure as she frantically scanned the long table for an open spot. She found one nearby a group of fellow first-years and sat down quickly, releasing a breath. Nobody was paying attention to her anymore; the hall's focus had turned back to the next child to be sorted. Rowan took the time to collect her surroundings, for now that she was no longer stressing over her own sorting, she could truly look around. They called this place the Great Hall, and for a good reason, Rowan mused. The ancient walls stretched into the ceiling enchanted to appear like the night sky. Rowan was having trouble wrapping her head around the fact that it wasn't the true stars shining up there in the darkness. And the candles-- oh, the candles. They floated above the tables, bobbing in an invisible lake above their heads. The wax never waned, the golden flames burned for eternity. Rowan couldn't suppress the audible gasp of awe and delight that escaped her as she stared upwards.

An Illusionary Night
♦ An Illusionary Night, 1st of September 2023 at the Great Hall, Hogwarts ♦
Marble Borders by Ulysses Drake
Following Remedy's Sorting Ceremony
THERE WAS NO DENYING THE WHIRLWIND of turbulent emotions circulating through the girl's mind, and one could only wonder if her time at Hogwarts would be a downward spiral after all.
Shuffling quietly to the sea of the tenacious and revered verdant-robed students, Remedy stuck out like a sore thumb donning her crisp, ebony garb and couteance of suppressed fright in the form of a passive smile that didn't quite meet the eyes. It wasn't that Remedy didn't feel well-placed amongst the effervescent coterie, but rather the chokehold of come to naught in comparison to a particular Viper down the banquet table: Avery Leveret, her enigmatic cousin that she venerated and despised. Her brown gaze caught his beady eyes for a brief moment in a silent exchange; the newly-appointed Vipress couldn't be sure what his glower entailed or if he simply saw through her akin to the nameless nobodies that divided them. No matter, Remedy would be the first to divert in surrender; his beady gaze coercing the girl to keep her eyes low and towards the end of the Great Hall amid the duration of the Sorting Ceremony.
Boredom crept upon her like a snake in the grass; Remedy's eyes wandered the portraits and statues that adorned the space until she spied a certain irksome Hufflepuff in her direct line of sight from across the Great Hall. Wonderful, simply just.. wonderful. Remedy's lips parted in an indignant sigh aimed at the aching thorn in her side named Helena Rose; the years' worth of memories gnawed at her psyche until another girl sat across from her. The Vipress shifted her gaze from Helena to the stranger (Rowan) and bestowed a curt nod. The duo sat in distended silence until the Sorting Ceremony came to an overdue and long-awaited close;
"Finally.." Remedy murmured harshly under her breath. After imparting the students with closing words, a feast of succulent delicacies conjured before the students. Picking a few delights onto her ivory plate, Remedy would peer at the girl before her curiously; "Lovely, isn't it?" the Vipress chimed to her (Rowan) while following the brunette's gaze upward to the enchanted night-time ceiling, "You could just stare for hours.."@Rowan Sallow - sorry about the wait!

An Illusionary Night
It took several moments for the other girl's words to reach Rowan, who was paralyzed by the overwhelmingness of it all. Nearly all of these students who surrounded her knew so much about this wizarding world already, and Rowan, not used to being so clueless, wanted to sink into the floor and just observe forever. The older students sitting at the table- murmuring conversations to one another whilst studying the newest members of their house, wore robes identical to Rowan's besides being lined with green. The symbolic color of the Slytherin house. Rowan was not as much focused on which house she was placed into than she was on being placed at all. Once the house spoke, both relief and terror washed over her. There was a part of her that she knew had hoped that this was all a dream, a simple story created by her mind as she slept. It certainly felt dreamlike. But the relief crashed over any traces of such feelings as she made her way to the long wooden table. There's a place for me here.
Such a realization brought upon Rowan a sense of intense ambition. She was capable of performing magic. At that moment, the young girl vowed to herself to become the most powerful being that she could become. A voice brought Rowan back into the waking world. "Lovely, isn't it?" Across from Rowan sat another girl, a first year-- Rowan recognized her from the boat docks. "Very much so," Rowan replied quickly, tearing her gaze from the ceiling to meet the other Slytherin's gaze. "It's fascinating how they float without supports. It's not possible." She winced at herself; what a stupid thing to say, it was magic, surely anything was possible. Rowan opened her mouth, about to attempt to redeem her ignorant comment, but was stopped by the sudden appearance of a feast in front of them. She jumped in her seat, gripping the underside of the table as she straightened her posture, hoping nobody noticed. The girl across from her was still looking. "I'm Rowan," Rowan offered, clearing her throat to try to sound more intimidating than she felt. "Rowan Sallow." She looked expectantly at the other girl, unintentionally avoiding her piercing brown eyes.
