Midnight Ride
୨⎯ Midnight Ride ⎯୧
Trouble was her middle name.
Sometimes, it was difficult to sleep. Sometimes, people stayed up until past midnight. Sometimes, people broke curfew. She was just a girl, right?
Ava snuck out of her hauntingly empty dorm, clutching the handle of her broom close to her chest as she moved out of the common room. She couldn’t help but be struck by déjà vu, causing her to shiver. At least this time it was wood in her hands, not metal. Not fake silver. She couldn’t help but wonder if the ghostly @Colin McCoire was out wandering the halls. Something had been clearly off with him, she had noticed although she did her best to avoid him.
As she made it through the common room and emerged into the corridors of the school, she continued through the castle. Once she was on the main floor, she broke into a run as she readied herself to climb onto her broom.
As she mounted the broom, she took to the air and pushed through the halls, gaining as much speed as she dared and hoping she wouldn’t get caught. Even now in the silence of the night, it would be difficult for her to hear anyone coming over her pounding heartbeat. If a prefect caught her— or worse, a professor— it would mean definite detention. She couldn’t count on @Clair Fernandez to give her free passes every time she went out breaking the rules.

Another restless evening. Emily seemed to be having a phase where she couldn't sleep. Lying in bed back in Badger Bungalow wasn't working anymore and despite her better common knowledge, Emily was now outside the Common Room despite it already being so late. Emily was sneaky though. She wouldn't go too far either. An easy slip out and then an easy slip back in. A little bit of air wouldn't kill anyway.
She gently skulked along the ground with her cardigan wrapped tight around her. A little chilly but much warmer than the last few days thankfully. Her hair flipped and flapped gently behind her as she paced slowly in the corridors, careful not to make a sound.
Yet the lack of noise was irking her. She was resisting the urge to whistle or sing a song, instead pacing a little quicker as she began to daydream to distract herself. The rush of her imagination always made her body stir in a strangely enjoyable way, goosebumps along her arms and the hairs on the back of her neck as her imagination ran wild with fairytales and scary stories.
That was until she caught sight of something moving along the corridors. Something towards her. Half-dazed in her dreaming stupor, it took a full few seconds for Emily to register that someone was moving quickly along the corridor in a silent pace... Towards her.
Emily froze and let out a quiet squeak of surprise.
Oh Heavens, don't be a Prefect... Not a Prefect...!

It was calming to be out this late, with no one around. She was too afraid to go outside, but riding her broom gave her some time to think. Or not to think, tonight. Her broom was an odd comfort, which said a lot about her choice of comfort when the same broom was the one that usually carried her until she was unconscious in broom races. But maybe that was because of the adrenaline that riding gave her, the same one that pushed away most of her worries.
Ava continued to speed through the halls, but it was too dark to make out any movement. Nothing seemed amiss until she heard a quiet sound, and a second later she slammed into something. Something…or someone? Ava knew she had knocked whatever she had hit right over with her speed, and she struggled to slow down as she tried to see what she had hit.
Once she came to enough of a stop, she jumped off of her broom and moved towards what she had hit. She reached into her pocket for her wand, only to realize she hadn’t grabbed it on her way out of the common room. She cursed under her breath, and tried to squint as she moved closer.
“Please don’t be a person,” she muttered to herself as she drew closer, dropping to a crouch to try to get a better view. And yes, she had knocked over a person. She scrambled back.

With it being so quiet and late at night one could easily let their guard down and expect nothing. A calm evening despite the restlessness, Emily could never have anticipated what just happened. The most she would expect would be the suspicious shuffly shoe of a teacher or a prefect to catch students out of bed. Thankfully none of the sort had happened and Emily was dead set to keep it that way.
Never did she expect this.
Emily didn't even have time to blink, let alone process fully the fact that someone riding a broom came flying - literally - towards her and knocked her clean off her feet. The whole thing was a blur from the moment she caught the brief image of the student soaring at her to the sensation of being hurled back across the corridors. It was a miracle neither Emily or the mystery rider were sent through the wall, let alone the fact that the whole ordeal was done through remarkable silence.
Emily laid still on the cold hard floor, a groan leaving her lips as she massaged her throbbing head. Her nose wasn't bleeding but felt fuzzy. Her chest and shoulders ached but nothing was broken, though no doubt something would leave a mark after the force of the collision.
She managed to will her body off the floor when the pain more or less surpassed. Despite the slight disoriented state she was in Emily could make out a girl on a broom scrambling back towards her. Unless she was wrong, she looked to be older than her.
With a small sway Emily walked over to her, her voice low but undeniably miffed.
"What the heck are you doing riding a broom in the corridor?!" Emily demanded in a quiet hiss. She was more baffled than she was angry but still... What matter of being possessed this Slytherin girl to go broom-riding so late at night indoors?

Cass yawned and stretched, standing besides the mirror in the Slytherin common room gender neutral bathrooms. They had only intended to get up and go to the bathroom, but they couldn't sleep anyway. A little wander couldn't hurt. And if it did, that was what the hospital wing was for. Besides, what was life without breaking every rule listed a little adventure? With this adventure came the risk of yet another detention, but they weren't really that bothered.
The fluffy rugs of the Slytherin common room were soft on their bare feet as they opened the door. Briefly considering getting a cloak but deciding against it, they slipped out into the corridors. They didn't really have a plan for where they were going, only the knowledge that their restless feet couldn't stay in the same spot anymore. The floors of the corridor outside however, were ice cold. They did a funny dance walk as quietly as they tried to touch as little of the freezing floor with their bare feet as possible. They enjoyed keeping all of their digits intact, thanks.
Thinking that maybe out of the basements the floors wouldn't be an active risk of getting frostbitten toes, they headed up the stairs to the main floor. The sight that greeted them as they ascended though, was one that they couldn't say they had expected. An older Slytherin and a Hufflepuff (one of them holding a broom of all things) had collided in the middle of the hallway. Their guess was that one of them had been flying inside for whatever reason and didn't think to stop upon seeing the other. Or perhaps it was purposeful, and the Slytherin girl had some grudge against the Hufflepuff.
"Um" they said, walking towards the strange pair "A good evening- or rather morning to you". It was weird, but then again this was Hogwarts. Weird was kind of part of the package deal. Besides, whatever they were up to had to be more interesting than sitting in bed.

Interacting with: @Ava Winchet @Emily Shephard @Cass ItoIf there was one thing about Hogwarts Haime had learned while at the school, it was that there were people everywhere. Constantly talking, making noise, and moving. Sometimes it felt like an obstacle course, where Haime was contently avoiding walking into people or having people walk into her. This was only during the day though. At night, most of the students were off in bed and there was almost no noise. While for some the silence could be eerie, Haime found it to be the only time she could relax and here her own thoughts.
At the beginning of the school year, Haime had decided that on Saturday nights she would wander the castle after hours, without messing up her school sleep schedule. While she was breaking an important school rule, Haime wasn't that worried she hadn't managed to get caught once yet, so why would she now. Additionally, everyone deserves a little peace and quiet, as well as time to think. It wasn't like she was hurting anyone or even putting herself in danger.
As Haime continued walking, she heard a quiet voices. In that moment she had two choices, find out what was going on and who else was out at night. Or leave before she got involved in whatever was going on. Leaving would have been a much safer decision, but curiosity got the best of Haime as she found herself moving closer to where the whispers had come from.
She got close enough to see three students, one with a broomstick, "who in their right mind would wander in the corridors after curfew and bring a broomstick," Haime wondered. "What is supposed to be going on here?" Haime whispered, angerly. "Three people and a broomstick, could you try any harder to get caught."

Ava realized that the other girl was younger, or had to be, which meant she could use it to her advantage. "What are you doing wandering the corridors after curfew?" She demanded, planting her hands on her hips and trying to look as mature as possible. Maybe she could get away with pretending to be a prefect?
And then they weren’t alone. It seemed a slytherin student, also a first year, had followed her up They were oddly casual for the occasion. "You too! What are you doing out of bed!"
And then a third joined the misfit group, still a younger student. She rolled her eyes as an idea began to form in her mind. "You all are out past curfew! Do you know who I am?" She demanded them, but she didn’t allow them to answer. "I am Opeila Winters, prefect of slytherin! I’m doing my rounds, and you all are in trouble, which means detention!"
Would any of them dare contradict her? She hoped not. She also hoped that they didn’t realize that she didn’t have a single thing in common with @Opeila Winters, but hopefully the dark would hide that.
She had just the plan of how to make the night memorable for the four of them, although the plan seemed to benefit her the most. She lamented her left behind wand as she did her best to conjure a menacing gaze for the two students she had ‘caught’, and the one student she had ran into. Her wand would’ve come in handy tonight.

Starting to Panic in front of @Ava Winchet @Cass Ito @Haime Yoon

Oh Geez.
What should've been a simple five minute dander suddenly cranked into a whole party really quickly. Too quickly.
Emily stuttered for words whilst she was being questioned by two other students who arrived on scene before eventually managing to speak clearly and quietly.
"I was just trying to get some air before someone collided into me whilst on their broom...! I was going to head back had she'd not flown into me...!" She gave a scathing glance at the older Slytherin girl, not at all buying her "Prefect" demeanour. The hell kind of Prefect flies around on a broom at midnight?! Not very reflective of school standards, Emily would assume.
With how chaotic things were getting Emily was starting to panic. She wasn't looking for trouble and most certainly didn't want to be in any. She couldn't imagine any of the rest of these people wanting the same thing to happen to them either.
"Look, can't we deal with this somewhere that isn't in the middle of the corridor where someone will find us? Or better yet in the morning where we won't get in trouble for talking in broad daylight?" She asked, a slightly pleading look in her eye. Trouble was a word not suited for Emily and unlike some people, she wouldn't take to punishments well. Not to mention that all the excitement - "Excitement" being an operative word - was making her tired, more so than her bruises from earlier were.

Interacting with: @Ava Winchet @Emily Shephard @Cass ItoOh, so that was how the older girl was going to play. Haime wasn't sure if the older girl was a prefect or not, but either way, she wasn't worried. Maybe that was stupid, but it was incredibly dark in the corridors and there were plenty of first year students that looked similar enough to Haime, she knew it would be pretty hard to catch her. And honestly doubted that this student would report anything even if she was a prefect. It's not very perfect like behavior to run into students with a broomstick, especially when there are three witnesses. She also, was pretty sure that Ophelia was a duelist, why would a duelist be flying into students at midnight? "If you're a prefect, where's your badge?" Haime asked the older girl. Haime would probably think back on this moment and think of all the better things she could have said, but oh well. "Last I checked trying to knock first years over with a broom isn't exactly in the prefect job description."
The broom attack victim seemed to have a much better alibi. "Your right, let's go somewhere that we aren't going to get caught," Haime agreed, "Any suggestions?" She paused for a minute, "Or," Haime said sarcastically, "We could ask the "prefect" sense she should know all the patrol routes." Haime definitely didn't want to get caught roaming the corridors in the middle of the night, but if it was going to happen she was going to have fun with the situation.

Yeah right. There's no way that girl was a prefect. The day that prefects started doing their rounds on brooms of all things was the day they signed up to become one. Chasing troublemakers on brooms sounded fun, but they probably wouldn't last a day before getting kicked off for all the trouble they made. The other girl who said something about not getting caught did have a point though. There were quite a lot of them, and all the arguing they seemed to be doing wasn't helping the whole stealthy thing.
It looked like the two younger-looking girls shared their views on older-girls not very prefectness. They were going to have to try and get some names, no way they could keep mentally calling them younger-girl-1, younger-girl-2 and older-girl. "Last I checked, prefects didn't do their rounds on brooms" they said to the others "Although honestly that would be kind of cool". Perhaps she had been off to do some kind of prank? If so, Cass wanted in. No way were they just going back to bed.
Detention was a small price to pay either way. It wouldn't be their first, and they had a sneaking suspicion it wouldn't be their last either. "I'm Cass" they smiled at the others "Whats with the broom anyway?". No matter if one of them reported them for this later, without a last name good luck figuring out which Cass. It was a common enough name, and the corridor was dark. "And you guys have a point, we should probably be off to where you had planned" they lifted an eyebrow "Unless anyone feels like going back to bed?".
