@Alan Vanes

Artemis sat at his desk going over some homework that had piled up over the last week. When his eyes began to cross from looking over the same assignments again and again, he pushed the pile of first year homework to the side of his desk, placed his head on top of his clasped hands, and sighed wearily. It was almost as if the students copied from each other, or took everything he said word for word and wrote it down in the assignments. If he wanted to re-read what he said, he would just look at his notes.

Spinning around in his desk chair, the young thirty-four year old Charms professor looked out over his classroom. Only one set of tiered desks were along the right side of the wall, the large action figure that was child size was standing on one of the desks on the second tier, almost as if it were watching the room, the box of empty water balloons that he used for his Levitation Charm lessons were also over on the desks and he reminded himself that he would need to either put those away for next term or take the box outside and allow the students to have a balloon fight of their own as a free day.

And speaking of outside, Artemis moved his chair across the floor, the wheels silently gliding across the wood, to look out of the long floor to ceiling windows that helped brighten up his classroom. He briefly entertained the idea of skipping out on his obligation to help a young Gryffindor practice a spell he had learned in Herbology earlier in the year, but he knew that he wouldn't do that. He never flaked out on a student asking for help before and he wouldn't do it now. This was a weekend he wouldn't be returning home as his wife took their son on a small vacation to visit her family in Japan so they would be gone for about a month until the middle of June before typhoon season began. This was a perfect weekend for the teacher and student to have their extra lessons.

Turning back around to his desk, he shuffled through the homework on his desk until he found Alan Vanes' homework. The boy was quite diligent and thorough in his homework output. Always had Os and managed to answer all of the questions elaborately. Artemis found it strange that the young Gryffindor had difficulty with Incendio. Glancing at the corner of the large room, Artemis remembered clearning that area of everything that could potentially be destroyed by a wayward cast and shrunk down the tiered desks from that section of the room. He then warded that area to ensure that if the fires managed to lose control, they wouldn't exactly wander throughout the large room and destroy anything else. He could deal with a few scorch marks in the wood.

He wouldn't even begin to know how to deal with an entire burned down classroom.

Logically he should have this extra lesson outside on the lawn or near the Black Lake, but he was more concerned with the safety of the other students over how intact his classroom would be when this lesson was over. He looked through another copy of Alan's homework from earlier in the year - he always made copies of his student's homework for references or evidence in case parents attempted to plead cases that their child was a perfect angel who deserved perfect scores- and couldn't exactly see what the boy could possibly need help with. But it wasn't his place to make assumptions. He was
asked to help and that's what he would do.

Artemis looked at the clock on his desk. "It's just about time for him to arrive," he observed. Sure enough, a knock sounded on the door of his classroom and the Charms Professor stood up from his desk. "Well, let's get this show on the road," he said to himself. Out loud he called, "Come on in!"

Alan was walking through the corridors, his notebook pressed against his chest as he was nervously peeking around. He was kind of nervous because he had not expected the new Charms professor to address a tutoring lesson, when the young Gryffindor mentioned having problems with casting a charm. No, the process of casting had not been a problem, but rather keeping the charm in control like he had needed to.

Though nervous a soft smile appeared on his face as it tugged away at the corner of his lips, while he walked towards the Charms classroom with a quick pace. He remembered being taught this spell by his Head of House, who had been the Professor of Herbology before getting that new opportunity. However because the new professor of Herbology had not been the one to teach him this particular spell, he assumed it would be the best to ask him for help. While he had never talked with the professor and truth to be told already forgot how he had been introduced in the Great Hall, he assumed he would have the broadest subject on the art of casting spells. Alan also couldn't help but to admire the older wizards hair, wondering whether it grew naturally like that. But that certainly was of no importance in this situation.

He stopped in front of the classroom, knowing that it must be on time as he had checked the time not too much time ago and gently raised his hand to give the wooden door a light knock with his knuckles. “Come on in”, was what he heard and wanting to save himself from the embarrassment of having the professor call twice – which indeed had happened in the past – he pushed the door handle down, having the old door give in with a echoing creak. He entered the room quickly, pushing the door close, before raising his face towards the professor.

”U-uhm... hey Professor-”, he began nervously, before realizing that he could not remember what the name of him was. When he was introduced in the Great Hall he was too busy confusing mustard with lemon curd and putting it on a scone and then trying to get rid off the taste by downing a full cup of pumpkin juice. So now he was kind of at a loss. ”I... I was the one requesting your assistance on that spell-”, Alan explained, his voice sounding soft, insecure. Who else would he be, scolded the Gryffindor inwardly. He after all appeared at the given time, so of course the professor would know it was him. Alan would nervously push a lose strand of hazelnut brown hair from his face and smile lightly as he forced himself to calm down a little.

U-uhm... hey Professor-”

Artemis quirked an eyebrow at the young Gryffindor as a smirk graced his features. He heard the trailing as the boy greeted him. 'He forgot my name already? He does my homework and he forgot my name. I don't know whether to be offended or find it incredibly cute. These first and second years are softening me up.'

He looked the lad over again and noticed how closed in he seemed. His arms were wrapped tightly around his notebook which was held tightly to his chest, a sure sign of nervousness as well as an attempt to keep others at bay. Artemis knew that position well. It was one he used to assume when he was the same age as this young man. Right after the war. Right after his father was sent to Azkaban. Everyone in the school knew about Artemis and Athena Vernatis. Though they had their mother's last name, everyone knew their father was a Death Eater. And everyone assumed that the two siblings would follow in their father's footsteps.

They were wrong, of course.

Artemis was pulled from his memories when the boy, Alan, began stating why he was there. A fact that Artemis already knew and the Charms Professor had to swallow the smile that was trying to surface as the boy fumbled over his words. Deciding to save the lad, Artemis moved from behind his desk and began the short walk over to where Alan stood. "Welcome, Mr. Vanes. No need to be all huddled up by the door. Come in and let us begin on helping you master this spell. It was Incendio, correct?"

Placing a hand on Alan's shoulder, the older wizard guided the Gryffindor across the classroom and to the section where the wards were placed earlier that morning. "I've placed wards around this area. Should the spell go haywire, it will only be contained in here and I will quickly put the fire out before you're ever hurt." Artemis stared intently at Alan. "You mentioned that you know how to cast the spell but you lack control. Do you remember the three rules of Charms?"

Artemis waited for the boy's answer, which he knew - or hoped- the lad knew the answer to and continued with his short lecture. "If you remember those rules, you'll find the control you need to make Incendio work."

Making a gesture with his own wand, the Charms Professor summoned the action figure from where it stood on the stands. With another wave, he made six replicas of the toy before putting the original outside of the wards and away from harm. His son was a typical child. He wouldn't even know his life sized action figure was missing until it was thrown away or destroyed and he would rather not have to deal with the fallout of his son's toy being burned to a crisp. Moving back into the warded area, Artemis took one of the dolls and placed it a few feet away from Alan, then took up position behind the boy.

"Alright. You know how to cast the spell, but before you do, practice the wand movement a few times. I'll make changes if you're gestures are off a bit but I'm positive that you know what you're doing. When you think you're ready, begin casting."

Alan was not all too sure what to think about all of this or if he should pay any thought to it at all. Here he was standing in a classroom, his notebook clutched against his chest as his slim fingers held a tight grip at the edges. Carefully he returned the smirk with a small smile of his own, when he listened to what the professor had to say.

Alan nodded at his words, his eyes shifting towards his shoulder were he could feel the light grip. For a quarter of a second he tensed up, before relaxing as he reminded himself that this professor seemed nice and was nothing like their headmaster, a man of whom Alan was terrified of. However his smile had shifted into an uneasy one as he followed the Charms professors direction.

Alan was pretty sure the man must have noticed that he was unfamiliar with how to address the older, yet he gave no help on his own accord. It meant Alan would either have to retreat from his shell or suffer through the awkwardness of not callimg the professor by his name. Obviously it was clear which option he chose, as asking for the name might make him seem stupid. For now he would stick to option two, just ignore the problem until it couldn't be ignored anymore.

Alan was at least happy to know that he could not cause any actual damage to the room and that the professor had told him no matter how wrong his spell could go this time no one would come to harm. He remembered the incident of the rock exploding into bits of tiny shrapnel when he overheated it by accident.

"Yeah... I do know uhm incantation, wand movement and the focus", he explained carefully while mustering the professor carefully. Listening to him made it sound so easy, but Alan knew how difficult it could be to not lose focus. He had always problems to stay focused not only when casting spells but in any occasion.

Alan's eyes widened upon seeing the professor summon something without uttering a word. "Wandless magic, sir?", he asked surprised, it was obvious that he was impressed by that level of skill and it also assured him more that the man knew what he was doing and could help if it turned out to be a catastrophe.

He took his wand from the holder that was hidden in the left sleeve of his robes and began to practice the wand movement like he had been told. His movement indeed may have been a bit off. It still resembled the image of a flickering light however the movement was fast and therefore a bit messy.

A gentle smirk graced the man's features when the young Gryffindor asked about his wandless magic. It was true that he could do wandless magic, having mastered a bit of it during his Charms mastery apprenticeship, but he did actually use his wand this time around. Just didn't say the spells. "I used my wand, Mr. Vanes. However, I just didn't speak the spells. Wandless and using spells silently are valuable skills to have, especially if you are in a duel. I'm sure that you learned this in your Defense classes, but it is good to have these skills to ensure your opponent doesn't succeed in having a counter-attack to your own spells."

After watching the boy practice the wand movement for a while, Artemis said, "Good work. Now, I want you to practice the spell on the toy I placed a few feet from you. Again, you won't be harmed if anything happens."

The Charms professor gestured to the toy and waited for Alan to start practicing. "Remember to concentrate. If you're having trouble, you will have to speak up. I may be a master in Charms and Defense Against the Dark Arts but I am not versed in Divination and cannot read your mind, Mr. Vanes."

Artemis had made that last statement to let the lad know that he could approach him with questions if he needed to. The boy seemed overly shy and, though it wasn't a bad quality to have, Artemis would not be able to help Alan if the young man didn't ask for his help. Like asking him for a proper way to address him.

'At least he didn't give me a nickname. Not like some of my more enthusiastic female students.' he thought with a subtle wince at the Gryffindor and Hufflepuff duo.

Waving his hand this time, Artemis summoned a box of Chips Ahoy mini cookies from his desk drawer and quietly began munching on them as he watached Alan practice the spell. If the boy could produce a controlled Incendio, he'd allow him to grab a handful of his snacks. He had another box somewhere, he was sure.

He had used the wand? Well Alan had not really paid attention he just saw the object suddenly flying towards the professor, which had been impressive enough in the young boys eyes, who could not even think about using the Summoning spell, as he had not learned it yet. Maybe he would soon, but for now he was left to be impressed by, at least for the professor, easy spell. Also he had not heard the professor say something to make the object move, so he was left to stare at him dumbfounded.

What the professor was saying made sense. These skills would be good during duels or well... playing pranks he supposed. ”But how would you defend yourself when someone attacks you without words? Do you just guess?”, he asked curiously, before a playful smile crossed over the timid features, ”Or be faster than them?”.

With his new given task Alan slowed down his movement and took a look at the toy the professor had sat down there. Would it be okay to aim a fire spell at it? It would get scorched would it not? Alan would feel bad to whoever this toy belonged to. This led Alan to the next question... who did this toy belong to? So many questions he could ask the professor, who would most likely be able to answer all of them, yet Alan could not make himself ask them. Or should he? The professor seemed nice enough, he would certainly not judge him. But would he be offended if Alan asked for his name? He might be, so Alan was rather unsure whether to ask the question that was bothering him the most. ”U-uhm, Professor?”, he asked, his hand clenching around the piece of wood, hoping that the wand would not get triggered to cast magic. ”It s-seems that I cannot recall your name...”, he admitted, his arms dropping at his side in defeat, as he looked everywhere but at the professor's face. The young Gryffindor suddenly took great interest in staring at his finger tips. The strands that fell forward hid most of his face, hiding the red tinted cheeks behind a curtain of his hazel colored hair.

He had even forgot about the given task, that he was told to move on to the casting of the spells. He could not be bothered to do that now, still hoping not to be judged all too much by the professor by not remembering his name. He would most likely have to give him a secret nickname that would help him remember the name, until he was able to remember the name on its own. Well not that he planned on making the professor know that just yet. He carefully peeked up at the man, expecting to see the nice expression he had so far gone. Gently his fingers of his left hand, the one that was not holding the wand tightly, reached up to push his strands back behind his ears. He should have brought his hair pins now that he was thinking about it.

Artemis continued to snack on his cookies but stopped when the boy in front of him turned to ask him about dueling with wandless magic.
But how would you defend yourself when someone attacks you without words? Do you just guess?”
The teacher raised another eyebrow at the question, popped another mini cookie into his mouth, before putting the box on the edge of his desk and standing to move over to the lad, who now had a playful smile on his face.
"Or be faster than them?”

"Neither. You're in a duel. You had better be paying attention to your opponent regardless if they're using words or not. Otherwise, you'll be the one paying the price. Most likely with your own life," Artemis crossed his arms over his chest. "Now, begin practicing the spell, Mr. Vanes."

Artemis waited for the boy to start and almost barked at the boy for his hesitations when he noticed Alan eyeing the toy in front of him warily. Shaking his head with a soft smile instead of a scowl, Artemis said, "I've made duplicates of the action figure so that you can use them for practice. The original is tucked away in my office...if that's what you were thinking about. Now, please begin."

Artemis waited a little longer, wondering what his young Gryffindor student could possibly be thinking about now since he was, once again, hestitaing. He opened his mouth to question the lad when Alan beat him by shyly saying,
"U-uhm, Professor? It s-seems that I cannot recall your name...”

Artemis blinked at the boy. Then blinked once more. 'That's what he was concerned about?' Reaching behind him without taking his eyes off his student, Artemis retrieved the box of cookies.

"Mr. Vanes, I was quite aware of you forgetting my name when you entered my classroom a few moments ago," Artemis popped a cookie into his mouth as he moved out of the warded area briefly, retrieved a piece of paper, wrote his name down upon it, then folded it and put it into his pocket before walking back into the warded area with Alan.

"You may call me 'Sir' or 'Professor' for the duration of this tutoring session. Now, if you will, start practicing the Charm," Artemis sat in a nearby chair, crossing his legs as he tossed another cookie into his mouth, then thought about what he asked of his student and added, "Please," before another cookie entered his mouth. As he chewed, he muttered to himself, "I need some milk."

"Neither. You're in a duel. You had better be paying attention to your opponent regardless if they're using words or not. Otherwise, you'll be the one paying the price. Most likely with your own life," were the words the professor had replied with, making the second year shudder just thiking about this. He forgot that the main purpose of duels in actual fights were to defeat someone, or maybe he just ignored that fact so far. Even now he shoved that information in the furthest corner of his mind, not even wanting to think about this being possible. For him it was a ridicullous thought to ever raise his wand against someone in a duel with the intention of actual harm. For the young boy magic was something beautiful, a gift that should be used to create and not to destroy. But he still clung to his opinion. Most lethal spells could be dodged or shielded, so he would just have to train his reaction or make the opponent unable to cast, by being fast and maybe disarming them. Or he had read about a spell that would make moving impossible. Or would making someone fall asleep in an actual duel be the best solution? His mind was wandering off obviously and only the professor's next words were able to recollect his attention to the present.

"I've made duplicates of the action figure so that you can use them for practice. The original is tucked away in my office...if that's what you were thinking about. Now, please begin."

Well now Alan was able to calm down a bit, at least a tiny bit. Alan would not have wanted to destroy someone's toy. He would have hated if someone would have caused any harm to his plushed lion, so he was glad the Professor would not let him do such a thing. [color?firebrick]"That's... relieving to know,"[/color], the second year mumbled before giving a short nod. Maybe he should really start focusing on this task now, but then the other was giving the next piece of information. But one could not really call this information as it was not answering his question in any way, making Alan look at the professor in slight confusion.

He was asked once again if he could begin with practicing the spell now and he wanted to adress him properly, but giving the circumstances he could not really do that and to blame was no other than the guy himself. "Sure, Professor NoName..", he mumbled nearly inaudible. His voice was light, still a bit anxious and obviously nervous; yet his mind was not focused on the professor and whatever he was saying now, making talking easier. He had a task and was distracted from the awkwardness of social interaction.

so... the spell, right. Alan blinked and looked at the toy placed on a table, making him bite his lip nervously. He raised his right arm, gently twirling the object between his fingers, before tightening his grip. Incantation and Movement. That was important for now and as soon as he did that he would need to stay focused. He could not allow himself to mess up again, not with a professor directly there, only a few feet away, watching him. Then there it was, a muttered sentence that made him turn his head to the professor. Did he say something? He inclined his head slightly, what was it the Professor said? Something about needing something? Did Alan forgot an important step already?

Artemis heard the boy mutter something but he wasn't aware of what it could be even in the quiet of the room. However, he was getting a little impatient with the boy as he had yet started on practicing the spell. What was the matter now? This kid was seriously stalling and Artemis had no idea why he would be. Was he scared of the spell? Did he try to do this spell before and something happened? Was he burned previously by this spell? There had to be a valid reason as to why everything was distracting Alan Vanes.

"Mr. Vanes, please begin. If you don't at least try the spell I won't be able to help you," Artemis said putting the box of cookies on the floor beside his seat. He waited once again, but when it was clear that young Alan was only staring at the toy in front of him, probably once again distracted, the Charms Professor sighed heavily.

"Mr. Vanes, if you will not even attempt to cast the spell, I will have to dismiss you and we will try this again when you-" Artemis trailed off as he heard the Floo in his personal quarters go off and he frowned.

'That's odd,' he thought as he turned toward his office. Without looking at his student, Artemis pulled out his wand and held it tightly in his grip. Silently, he pointed his wand at the door, turning his wrist outwardly to the right and whispered, "Revelio." Nothing happened, or more accurately nothing was revealed as nothing was hiding in his quarters. Whether or not Alan had inched forward, the Charms Professor didn't know, but he held his arm out just in case the young Gryffindor had any ideas. Artemis narrowed his eyes and moved to his door opening it slowly.

Pointing his wand into the room, Artemis said, "Homenum Revelio". A glowing light-green light shined from inside the chest he had against the wall near the fireplace. He honestly was quite surprised that the person or thing didn't go into one of the opened doors in the quarters. It would have given them a better chance at catching him unawares. His training in Defense Against the Dark Arts was paying off as Artemis silently walked across his living room. It was almost as if he were gliding with how fast and silent his footfalls were. Standing in front of the chest, Artemis readied his wand, pointing it at the spot where the opening would reveal the person hiding within. The Stunning Spell was on the tip of his tongue when he wrenched open the lid of the chest.

"Stupe...Yuya?!"

There wasn't much that could shock the thirty-four-year-old man, and he had seen quite a few shocking things in his short life, but seeing his eight-year-old son hiding out in a chest of books in his quarters when the boy should have been with his mother halfway across the word definitely was added to the top of his list of shock value.

Artemis stared, mouth opened slightly as his son looked up at him sheepishly and just said, "Hi, daddy."

Alan knew that, knew that he would have to start casting to actually improve on what was bothering him. But the Professor did simply not understand that he could not deal with too much of a distraction and would always do something that would cause him to lose focus. Be it the opening of the cookie bag or just muttering some stuff. Alan was not sure what it was all about but he was afraid to mess this charm up again. What if the professor would not react fast enough or something like that. At least that toy could not explode like a rock, or at least the damage would not be as bad.

Alan's eyes widened when he heard the Professor mention to delay the tutoring lesson. He was about to protest, even while the professor was still talking, but apparently he was not the only one having that in mind. He could hear the floo network giving a signal in the professor's office, making the second year wonder if he had an appointment. Maybe that was the reason the professor seemed
to be that stressed? Alan was not sure, but no matter what he was happy about that distraction, even though the man seemed not to be so amused. So Alan guessed again, it was not someone he wanted to have in his office or someone he did not know wanted to show up. Either way Alan only carefully followed the professor, curiosity having the better of him and simply compelling him to look into the room as well.

He watched the professor nearing the chest after he had casted a spell. Alan had seen his parents cast the spell before, so he knew about its use and effects. Alan was good with spells if they were easy to control he could even cast them effortlessly as long as he concentrated on them. He watched a small glimmer come from a chest that had been placed against the wall of an office that looked rather office-like. Alan just simply watched the scene in confusion of the professor that was acting like someone would attack him every second. Had he been in danger like that before or what made him so paranoid about being attacked. He knew for example from his mother that one would always be in some kind of danger, because chasing bad guys gave you a lot of enemies. Was that going to be a bad guy? He did not know but just to be careful he hid behind the door, only peeking into the room.

Only when the “attacker” was revealed, Alan's wildly beating heart would calm down and he would push open the door so he could stare at the child in bewilderment. A child that was definitely too young for Hogwarts, making Alan question what it was doing here. The child seemed familiar to the professor and soon it was revealed why. The kid, Yuya, apparently was the son of Alan's Charms professor, making the Gryffindor's eyes widen in excitement over his discovery.

”You have a son, Professor Noname?”, in his excitement he even forgot to keep the silly nickname a secret, as he stared at the younger child wide-eyed, waving at the kid with an instantly forming grin. What a cute child.
