Ah, it has been a long time, hasn’t it my dear readers? So long, in fact, that I’ve had a name and gender change. But that’s not what we’re here to talk about. Let me shed some light on what Muggles use for light sources! If you need a refresher on what electricity is, please revisit Meenauh Silmataurea’s article from Issue #5 – you’ll find it positively enlightening. Let’s talk about light bulbs!
xx
Light bulbs have been around starting in the early 1800s, but we don’t see something reminiscent of the modern lightbulb until the 1870s. Reader, you might imagine that these weren’t quite as effective as the blinding effect of LED headlights (Muggle-borns, if you know you know). I’ll be focusing on the incandescent model of light bulb, but there has been a progression towards more power-efficient and cooler (as in temperature) models.

If you need a refresher on what electricity is, please revisit Meenauh Silmataurea’s article from Issue #5.
───────────────────────────────────────────────────────────
The incandescent light bulb takes advantage of electrical currents passing through thin wires called filaments (typically made of tungsten metal, which has a high melting point that makes it perfect for this function). The filament essentially tries to resist the electrical current, and through that it gets super hot, and that heat creates light. So… don’t touch it. Or do and have a burn salve on hand.

The air in light bulbs has to be either a vacuum situation (with no air) or replaced with a noble gas, which means they never react with anything. Welcome to Muggle science! Normally neon or argon is what is used within a light bulb, because if it was just air the filament would burn up so fast you would have no use for a light bulb besides a quick light show.

Muggle Item of the Month:
Light Bulbs

As mentioned earlier, light bulbs started entering the homes of Muggles starting around 1870, as two historical icons, Joseph Swan and Thomas Edison, made it actually work well enough to be a suitable replacement for fire as a source of light. Originally the filament was made of carbon instead of tungsten, which came into play in the 1900s.

I’m going to go through a short list of different light sources you might find in Muggle homes, camping supplies, or really anywhere Muggles are.
xx

1. Torches – Also known as flashlights in some regions. These are usually battery powered (tiny containers of electricity, basically, that don’t need to be connected to a main electricity source), although sometimes they are powered by hand crank. These kind of have the same effect as casting Lumos from your wand, but they are usually a lot thicker with a very high-powered light bulb.

2. Fairy Lights – These are kind of what they sound like: tiny bulbs of light along a string that you can hang up to create pretty displays of light. These are also known as string lights! Often you can see them being hung up during the holiday months around December.

3. Ceiling, Floor, or Desk Lamps – These are what Muggles will generally use to light rooms! Ceiling lamps are, well, in the ceiling, while floor lamps are usually on a stand of some kind. The desk lamps are usually small to light a much smaller space than the rest of them.

4. Concert/Stage Lighting – Muggles get really creative when it comes to concerts or theatre performances! Colour gels or filters will be used over basic lighting to create cool effects on a stage that can be seen from really far back.

That’s all for this edition of Muggle Item of the Month! Is there an item you’re curious about? Send me an owl and I’ll try and cover it! I’ve missed you all dearly.

Our Summer Plans
by Simon Kincaid
─ ─ ─ ─ ─ ─ ─ ─ ─ ─ ─ ─ ─ ─ ─ ✁┘
Hogwarts may be our home away from home, but in the summer months, the heavy wooden doors of the Entrance Hall close, and the corridors rest empty as we head onto other adventures. Let’s discover what some of our fellow students have planned for their summer holiday!
xx
First year Slytherin Archer Duncan tells me that his mother is a researcher and cartographer. If my memory serves correctly, that means she looks at and designs maps and knows things. He said that they will be visiting the Canadian countryside, where she will be researching magical locations, and he is excited to explore the country’s mountains and lakes.

Another outdoor adventurer is second year Gryffindor Keith Moore, who plans to go on a camping trip with his aunts, hang out with his Muggle friends, and possibly owl a girl from Hogwarts. It looks like Keith is ready for summer survival the right way!

First year Hufflepuff Genevieve Delacourt would love to go to one of her favourite places in the world, the beach, finding it magical and glorious. She would also like to travel, possibly visiting France.

I also caught up with a charming and gorgeous third year Hufflepuff named AngelFyre McCubbin who said her summer plans consisted of going on safari to Kruger National Park in South Africa to see some exotic animals, while hopelessly missing her beloved boyfriend, who she thinks is the best boyfriend any girl could possibly hope to have.
xx
As for me? I plan to head back to my native land of London Town to catch up with my family and friends, and to partake in some of the culture, the music, and the museums that the city has to offer. I’ll also be writing to those at Hogwarts whom I’ll miss, hopefully getting to visit with some of them as well; especially a certain girl that has my heart, mind, and soul.

Whatever your plans are, stay safe! We want you back when summer ends for another exciting year at Hogwarts!
