Fire Over The Water
He didn’t manage to cast the spell Incendio in class when it was taught. His wand waved with what he thought was the same motion his classmates were making of a flame. He’d even tried adjusting the speed of making the motion and saying the word Incendio. While he thought he did everything perfectly per what he was instructed it was yet another embarrassing failure in learning magic.
The fact was it just didn’t work. Furthermore, this was becoming all to common an occurrence in classes.
He was determined to cast the spell properly. Yet, he felt hesitation whenever he tried out of a subtle concern that if he actually succeeded he’d set something on fire. A risk he had zero desire to take. He imagined setting fire to Hogwarts would earn him so many detentions he’d not be able to see a quidditch game until his sixth year, or ever as he could get expelled.
Did anyone think of the dangers of the spells they were taught.
It took him a bit of thinking to think of a place he could practice the spell without the dangers of setting Hogwarts on fire. Yes, most the school was stone, but there were a lot of things in it made of wood or tapestries. Then it hit him that he could practice outside by the lake.
He made his way to the lake and found a large rock that he could climb upon and sit at the top of to practice. With a smile he excitedly climbed the rock and sat on top of it. Then once on top of the rock he pointing his wand over the water and said “In-sin-dee-o“ twice. Nothing happened. Then he said “Insendeooo” realizing it sounded more close to what he heard in class that time as he made the motion. Yet, he realized the end of the word just didn’t sound correct.
Shaking his head with some frustration he practiced the motion without saying anything while trying to focus on the memory of watching others cast it. Blinking he focused on a memory of his mother casting the spell to start the stove in there kitchen at home the summer prior and said “Incendio” with the correct pronunciation as he mimicked the motion in his memory.
With a surprise the spell worked and a burst of fire shot out of his wand making him shout " Woah " excitedly.

After spending some much needed alone time to think about the events and epiphanies of the last couple weeks, Emily had finally left her spot by the Great Lake, deciding to take a walk before her next class was due.
The air was warm with the summer haze still present in the atmosphere. However the more she kept walking along the edge of the river the warmer it seemed to get. Eventually the heat grew so much Emily suspected someone had lit a campfire nearby.
She was almost right when she spotted a Slytherin boy with his wand out. From a distance she could hear him announce the Incendio incantation. She stood and watched impressed as he successfully performed the charm, a flare of hot flames emanating from his wand.
Emily could see the excitement in the boy's face and got closer, remaining mindful of where the spell was being aimed at and avoiding it's line of projection. She was suddenly hit with a wave of nostalgia as she remembered learning Incendio months ago, just before the Christmas holidays. Not a hard spell but quite tedious to keep up she found.
Emily was eventually close enough where she could speak to the boy without fear of getting burnt. Unless he turned around suddenly that is.
"That was a goog effort with the spell," she said nicely. She couldn't help but feel impressed. Emily was always easily pleased by things and witnessing magic being performed in front of her was no exception.

Fire Over The Water
Eryn wasn't expecting company. Instead, she was quite happily resting in one of the trees that scattered the shoreline. Not one for water, instead she found the great lake a good source of peace and quiet. The rocky shorelines and gentle birdsong reminded her of the trips she took with her mother- and after a long week of schoolwork, she was happy for the familiar. Perhaps later she'd take the time to write her sister another letter. But for now, she had work to do.
Up a tree wasn't the typical spot for a last minute herbology essay, but here she was.
Without warning, a blaze of fire flew over the lake. For a minute she was worried. Was there some great fire breathing animal no one had warned her about on the shore? But when she heard the excited voice of a student, her muscles relaxed. If she looked around one of the tree's branches, she could see someone on the rocks. She didn't think she had seen him before, even though his face looked vaguely familiar. Must be from another house, she concludes, swinging forward and letting go of the branch.
He looks young, about her age. She's glad- talking to older students has always put her on edge, even if they're mostly nice.
Her feet hit the ground with a crunch, and she approaches the other student to congratulate him on a spell well done.
And then she freezes, as another girl walks up.
Maybe he did have company, after all.

He smiled as he looked over towards Emily and said “ Thanks “ only noticing after he spoke his words there was another girl behind her. While he was attempting to send fireballs across the water he hadn’t considered how obvious his spell casting would be. Apparently obvious enough to attract others to join him.
Though, admittedly this was his first and only success with the spell.
Looking at both of them he said “ I kept freezing up in the castle scared I’d set it on fire. Have you guys gotten this one to work yet? “ As if they had even if he’d had one success he’d more than happily take any advice that would lead him to some sort of consistency. However, consistency would also require him not being afraid he’d burn the castle down either.
He wondered if he could succeed at the spell now with the two girls there. Out of fear of the embarrassment of failure he didn’t even attempt to demonstrate the spell. Instead he said uncertainty “ I can stop practicing if it disturbed you. “ As the odds of two girls who he didn’t see any sign of them having approached together could mean that he disturbed them.
A likely scenario as now he thought about it fully a fireball going over the water was probably distracting to anyone on the shore of the lake.

As Emily approached the Slytherin boy she also spotted another girl - a Ravenclaw - approach the pair of them and flashed her a friendly smile her way. If she was looking for company too then the more the merrier. She greeted her as she came over and soon enough the three of them were engaged in conversation.
Emily observed as the boy attempted another go at it, now aware of the seemingly innocent predicament. Drawing her own wand from her cloak sleeve, Emily joined him.
"I can do it, but only in small bursts," she said, not quite sure of herself. She feared she'd be setting the two students beside her for disappointment. Nevertheless she gave a small point of her wand and to her own surprise, a small fireball - not quite as impressive as the Slytherin boy's attempt - skimmed the water's edge before going out. Had it not been made of fire it could easily skim across the water like a stone. Mind you it would've been tiny hops before it would've sunk.
"See? More like a sparkler than a fireball if anything," Emily chuckled sheepishly. She half-turned back to her associates, trying to gauge their reactions. She wouldn't expect much given her efforts.

Fire Over The Water
Eryn realized quickly that she was noticed, and figured she might as well go and say hello. She skipped across the stones, kicking one with her shoe and watching as it flies into the water.
“Hey! That was pretty impressive!” She’s yet to learn Incendio, and even when she does she doesn’t expect it to go too well for her. Charms has never been her strong suit- she’d much rather stick to potions and herbology. Worth a try, though. The spell was sure something to look forward too- even if she couldn’t really imagine why she might need it.
Then again, she hadn’t thought she’d ever have to use the dancing feet spell either, but surprisingly it had come in handy more than once.
She watched the other girl attempt the spell, and clapped playfully. “It’s still cool though.”
Maybe she’d stick to skimming stones. She picks up one, and watches it jump across the water. One, two, three, four.
The lake was a good place to practice spells, she thought. The shores were mostly quiet, and peaceful. She wished that she had more excuses to come down here, especially in the summer. During the winter she was there often, however. Little ponds frozen over by the winter chill made great places to practice her skating, even if she couldn’t play with here team during the school term.

Considering he’d only managed the spell once he was uncertain if what he managed was typical or if it was a lucky first shot. Either way he was proudly happy with it. As he watched Emily’s fireball go over the water and smiled as he said “ I think it went further than mine. “
Though he didn’t want to make it a competition. After all, he was just learning and making things competitive wouldn’t help. Especially as Eryn mentioned she didn’t know the spell yet. A feeling he was more than used to as it seemed to take him longer to learn things too. With a smile towards Eryn he said “ You’ll get it eventually. I couldn’t get it in class, and have been practicing it a bit since before getting it just now. Might have been a lucky shot too. “
Picking up a rather flat stone he hoped his previous spell wasn’t a lucky shot. However, he didn’t want to leave the other girl out so he tossed is rock trying to skip it with it only making two skips before it sunk. Rock skipping was definitely not a strength of his as he was used to the waves of the ocean.
Then he said “ I’m going to try again. “ With little hesitation he pointed his wand in front of himself and said “Incendio” with identical pronunciation and wand movements to his first try. Though nothing happened indicating his one success might have been a lucky shot.

OOC Note: Sorry, I didn't mean for this response to come out so late...!
Emily laughed shyly at the Ravenclaw's enthusiasm over her little "sparkler" show but appreciated it all the same, evening giving another optimistic smile to her in hopes that she could do it along with them. She joined in and skipped a stone along with the other two - two skips in total - before she went on and watched as the Slytherin boy took another crack at the spell only this time nothing seemed to happen. With how good he kept his hand movements and incantation, Emily was tilting her head curiously as to why it didn't work that time.
"Strange... that looked fine to me. Hand movement was smooth, pronunciation was perfect too. So why did it not...?"
Emily retook her wand and made a movement mimicking the actual spell, testing it as if to try and compare herself to what the boy was doing. After a silent minute to herself she recast her version of the spell.
"Incendio!"
The same sparkler outcome occurred but this time with a little more force. It sailed just a tiny bit further though only marginally before it fizzled and went out as it kissed the water's surface.
"Hm... Just a little bit more force by the feel of it," she concluded.
