"It's probably someone I'm not too familiar with, then."
Eldridge took note of the fact that Isaac did not know the perpetrators. Then, he realized something that he should have asked sooner and felt stupid. He would ask the girl, named Carina, if she saw the house that the two people belong to. That would help in describing the situation if they had to get a teacher to assist the search. "Carina, I hope I'm getting your name right, did you see the house of these two people?" The entire time he was doing this, he tried to keep an eye on the tree, to see if he could identify the house of the person and if they made any suspicious moves. The girl began climbing down the tree, and Eldridge thought there was one of two reasons he could think of that she would climb up and go down when she was spotted. Either she was embarrassed we had seen her and had just climbed for entertainment, or she was trying to spy on them. He would say to Carina and Isaac "Hold on a second. You, you who just climbed down the tree! Please come out, I know you're there and continuing to hide won't help your case!"

Lucian wiped the embarrassment from her face, putting on the cool mask she wore at all times, something her father, Blackwell, had taught her when she was very young. He called it a "pertinent business tactic", one that she would learn if she was going to continue living in the Grey Manor. He had taught her after she'd come home crying, her brothers had pushed her around too much in the yard and she'd scraped up her knees. Instead of hold her and wipe the blood of her knees like most fathers, Blackwell had kneeled down to be at eye level with her, ad asked her why she was crying. When she had told him they had hurt her, he merely laughed. "Luce, by crying, you let them win." And immediately that night, he had taught her up until the early hours of the morning how to play a convincing poker face.
She put this into action now, adapting her relaxed pose in the tree and pasting a smirk on her face. "I'm actually quite comfortable here, thank you for the offer though." She splayed her legs out across the branches, calling out nonchalantly, "You can come to me though, if you so desire."

"You can come to me though, if you so desire."
Eldridge was immediately surprised. He thought she was at the base of the tree, but based on the placement of her voice, it seemed she was on one of the lower branches. Good thing she spoke back, or else he wouldn't have known this. "Dummkopf! Now I know you're in a branch, and not on the ground. So here's what's gonna happen. You come down here and explain why you're here, or I make you lose control of your legs with Tarantallegra and have you come down forcefully."
Of course, he wouldn't actually do this, in fear that the girl would hit her head and go unconscious, which wouldn't be worth it. Still, he had gotten used to making an empty threat look real. He usually had to do this to avoid a bully, but it was coming in handy now. Now he was hoping that she would just come down and tell us why she was here and a conflict wasn't caused. Now, all that was left was to await the girls course of action. I'd tel myself in my head, 'Just come down... I hope I don't need to hurt someone before my 1st year is over.'

Lucian smirked from her spot in the tree, pulling her wand out of her cloak pocket, taking a deep breath. She had always been an incredibly stubborn individual, something she'd inherited from both of her parents, making her doubly as doubtful to move. She leaned deeper against the trunk, speaking in a sing-songy voice, "Now that's not very kind of you." She played with her fingers, tapping her leg, waiting to see this boy's face. She wasn't big on threats, she took them to heart, and immediately grew incredibly sarcastic and defensive.
"After all, all I've been doing is sitting in this tree. I haven't done anything to threaten your safety, you have nothing to worry about. Unless you're hiding something" She snickered to herself, priding herself on the cheeky mannerisms Oberron had taught her, which had become incredibly useful for her in hostile situations. Oberron had always been known in Hogwarts for being incredibly mischievous and tricky, and although Lucian had grown with more of her father's solemn, mysterious manner, some of her brothers knack for michief had rubbed off on her. She was secretly thankful for it now, and proud of herself as well; she had always hoped to be more like her brother, popular in his house, always having friends and girls over to the Manor to 'entertain' them, always getting into trouble. Part of Lucian had always desired that sort of lifestyle, but deep down, she knew she was far too critical and reserved for that.

"You've been laughing by yourself, sitting in a tree," Isaac corrected, raising an eyebrow. "You don't see that every day."

He was growing more suspicious of this girl by the second. She claimed to not know anything, but had the same mischievous tone as a person who was in on a secret, or was up to something naughty. Her sing-songy tone and defensive words afterwards did ring of slight truth. She likely was hurt by the threat that Eldridge made. But there was no telling what she actually had done before climbing the tree, or what she had seen up there.

Considering that she had earlier invited them to come up, 'if they so desired,' he decided to take her invitation up.

First, Isaac took off his boots, knowing that they were poor for climbing. Then he rolled up the sleeves of his uniform.

Gripping the lower branch with a steady hand, he used the rough bark for traction. Swiftly, he climbed higher and higher, until he had finally reached the sturdy fork in which she sat. He decided to sit on a branch beside the fork, making sure it was stable enough to hold his weight.

Barely out of breath, he gave her a matter-of-fact look with his greyish eyes. "In fact, I don't see why you'd be laughing over anything, unless you were hiding something."

Lucian watched as the boy climbed up to join her, and she smirked as he made his way further and further up. What an odd situation she had created for herself, a conversation in a tree with a boy she had never met, being accused of something she didn't do; quite the conundrum indeed. She leaned her head back against the tree as well and closed her eyes against the green filtered sunshine, placing her wand back in the pocket of her robes now that she was sure she was out of danger; after all, you would have to be an idiot to cast a spell at her this high up in the tree and expect not to be expelled. Lucian knew this, meaning she could get away with whatever she felt necessary, the worst that could happen would be this new boy hating her, and frankly, she wouldn't really mind. She was used to people not trusting her.
"Can't a girl have a little fun? After all, I've been working extremely hard in my classes, it's good to take a load off and get some fresh air occasionally. You should try it sometime." She winked. her eyes still closed and her head still leaned back against the tree.

"Oh really? Maybe I should," Isaac replied as if he were seriously considering, swinging his feet lightly. As he continued however, a dark note of sarcasm crept into his tone, and shadows pooled beneath his eyes. "And maybe I should take things that aren't mine either. You know, just to borrow them and have even more fun. No one would mind."

He took his red-tinged wand out from his uniform pocket and twirled it briefly in his fingers before gripping it. Lucien had no doubt realized, just as he had, that to use magic from this height would be fatal. Her confidence was obvious from her relaxed posture, and the way that she lightly closed her eyes, basking in the afternoon sunlight. The way she tilted her head reminded him of the girls at his old school when they were sure of victory, proud of outwitting whatever student they'd deemed fit to bully.

A small surge of frustration welled inside of him upon seeing her playful wink, but he tamped it down. Getting angry wouldn't help anyone.

No doubt from her light tone, she was already on the defensive. He expected that, considering that he had almost flat-out accused her of wrongdoing. So he decided to take a more honest method this time. He'd explain. And if she was still just as cheeky as before, then he'd have no other choice but to take extreme measures.

"I'm looking for a rucksack, or a bag, with patches on the front of it. It's blue and beat up and full of papers. The last time I saw it, it was in this tree." He gestured to the fork where she sat for emphasis. "Now, it's gone, and you're sitting right where I left it."

An implication swam beneath his words. If she wanted to be considered innocent, then she'd have to prove it.

Lucian looked at the boy, analyzing his words, movements, facial expressions. She specifically watched the movements in his eyes; the eyes often betrayed what people were truly thinking, even those with the most masterful of masks. She had learned this at a young age, and had become increasingly aware of it, not only on others, but on herself. One of the first things she had learned to control when placing her cool, calm mask upon her face, were her eyes.A slight hint of boredom, mixed with total indifference, created the perfect poker face.
"I hate to be the bearer of bad news, but I haven't come across an bag such as that anywhere. What sort of papers does it contain?" She asked complacently, opening her eyes again and meeting his directly. Eye contact had always seemed to be the best proof of innocence for her, benefiting her when she lied, but even more so now, when she was telling the truth. Telling the truth was yet another way to be convincing, a thought that nearly made her chuckle aloud.
"Perhaps, if you'd left it in the tree, it has blown out. After all, there is a slight breeze picking up, and these branches seem to have a mind of their own." she shrugged. She had never really been one of helping people when it didn't concern her at all; it made her vulnerable, a feeling she hated and dreaded with every fiber of her being.

"School papers," he stated matter-of-factly, side-eyeing her. Shifting position on the tree, he propped his chin up with a hand, leaving one of his legs dangling off of the branch. Her casual air irked him instead of lessening his suspicions. Neutrally, he gave her another glance, noting how she seemed care-free about the whole matter. Perhaps he was asking the wrong person. But what if she was truly the thief, and trying to deceive him by lowering his guard?

The thoughts swirled around his head, mobbing it like owls. "Too heavy to blow away," he commented after her second statement, twirling a dark hair around his finger absently. He began to ponder the hypothetical that she wasn't the thief. It would make her uncaring attitude make sense, along with the irritation he knew was simmering beneath the surface of her innocent words. He would certainly be annoyed if he was being accused right away of something he never did.

The girl was a Gryffindor. He could tell that much from the red and gold on her uniform, shimmering in the dappled sunlight. So perhaps there was a chance she had seen it around the Common Room, or even on the staircases.

Contemplating this new avenue of thought, it was then that he recalled something else. His mother's words of admonishment drifted through his head.

Is minic a bhris béal duine a shrón!

In shame, he realized that her old saying was right. He didn't even know this girl's name, and had already jumped to being frustrated with her.

"Y'know. I believe you," he conceded, leaning back a bit on the tree. "It's fine if you don't know where it is. I was just hoping that you might've seen it around." He sighed a bit afterwards, still somewhat tense and disappointed.

Lucian nodded at the boy, proud that she had been able to change his mind. She knew that she could do it, years of honing her conversationalist skills had given her confidence in her words beyond belief. She had been able to tell the exact point in which his mood had shifted, not by his words, but by his eyes. They had glazed over a moment, as if he had been reminded of something, and when they came back to life again, they had a whole different hue. Not literally, but there was something about them that felt different. It was something she didn't think she'd ever be able to describe to anyone if she tried.
"Unfortunately, I have not. Whereabouts have you looked?" She asked, her words sincere but sharing the same bored tone. She could tell that her nonchalance about the whole ordeal bothered him, as it would anyone looking for something important. However, she wasn't about to act all incredibly interested just to save face; she wasn't one to have the energy to act more concerned about something than she actually was. Besides, doing so was a pointless waste of time, she was pretty sure he already believed her innocence, and that was all that mattered.
