Flying class. That was what her schedule said, written neatly in blue ink. All of her others had little notes scribbled next to them, describing the location, alongside some tips she had gotten out of the older student. She'd already completed the first lesson for each and every one.

But this was her first flying lesson. Something so foreign to her that even magic classes paled in comparison. That wasn't to say that she wasn't looking forward to it, however. Eryn was definitely in the 'sporty' crowd back home, and that never goes away, not even with a new school. She's looking forward to learning wizard sports. Something face to face, fast moving and meaningful. A space that was left empty when she waved goodbye to her teams at home for the final time.

Maybe that's quidditch. She thinks, trying to ignore the chants of "up" from all students around her. although from the brief explanation, it doesn't seem like a particularly physical sport, like she's used to. Unless you're a beater, she reasons. Maybe in the future that'll be what she does. Protecting, Fast paced and action filled games, full of brave moves and close calls.

For now, though, she needs to focus on summoning her broom.

It's no secret who in the class is muggle born. On the contrary, it's obvious. While the others grab their brooms on the first or second try, they take more- each try getting more and more frustrated on the wood rolling around the floor.

What was it she had leant in charms? Right. Clear your mind, focus. Intention and confidence will get you further than anything else.

When I say up, it's going to work.

Please.

"Up!" The first time she says the command, the old school broom lifts half a foot in the air before clattering back down to the ground. It's ok. she thinks, trying not to be disappointed. Try again.

"Up!" The word rings with clear instructions, and she feels the way her magic threads through it.

"Alright!" She whispers under her breath. Second try, not bad!

The sky in bright blue, only barely hidden by a scattering of clouds. It's a good day to fly. She hopes. At least there's no wind to blow her out of the sky.

The sun cast its warm rays down upon the students below, the majority of which were struggling to get their brooms off the ground. Flying was as familiar to Cass as riding a bike would be to any muggleborn student, and they had spent plenty of time on a broom during their childhood (And broken the odd broom, lost some others in trees, got one snapped in half by a very angry gardener.. perhaps they had gone through more brooms than the average child. Not by much though. definitely). All that practice looked like it was going to pay off, since most students looked like they had no idea that brooms where for any other purpose than sweeping floors. It certainly made it easy to pick out who was muggleborn and who wasn't. It was a little odd being taught the basics again, and more than a little boring.

The class was arranged in two lines facing each other, and was collectively attempting the incredibly basic task of getting their brooms to rise up into their hands. And mostly failing. Some of them needed to learn that screaming wasn't going to help, because it was definitely getting quite loud out here. Was this their first time seeing a broom? Even a five year old knew how to get them off the floor. Some of the brooms appear to be teasing their riders (or attempted riders in some cases) and were just rolling around on the floor. They sighed and looked out over the other students. Didn't they have any idea that brooms could sense your intent? The only thing some of them where intending to do was scream apparently. It really was quite loud.

Some of the students grab their brooms first or second try, and Cass is one of them. It's as simple as sticking out an arm, saying "Up" and then grabbing the thing. How do they find it that difficult? The redhead (or close enough) girl next to them got it on their second try, so they turn around and say "You fly?". They mentally select them as today's victim mentee. They got it fast enough, so they must have at least some degree of flying knowledge. Though of course, Cass could probably outfly most people here. None of them seemed to possess the same recklessness easy confidence around a broomstick.

The Slytherin student beside her gets their broom at the same time she does, one try earlier. Eryn takes note of this, as well as the exasperated look they cast at the bellowing students. Honestly, she understands. In what context does yelling make anything more efficient?

“Not before.” she says, spinning to face them. “But I bet with a little practice of the basics, I can beat you in a race.” She grins. Challenge is always a good motivator. The threat’s obviously empty, and mostly playful. But her competitive streak is certainly showing. Great, I’ve done it now.

It can’t be too hard, right? She’s heard other students mention playing on brooms from as young a 4 or 5. She’s certainly more coordinated than the average 5 year old.

The Slytherin student is clearly a pureblood. She doesn’t know if it’s just their house or the way they hold themselves that gives this impression- but they probably know what they’re doing. They’re a little older than her, by the looks of things. But shorter, by a small margin. They kind of remind her of her ice hockey team’s left wing sub back home. Perhaps easy to overlook, but the mistake will cost you.

“I’m Eryn. May I know the name of my opponent?” she asks jokingly. The thing is, once Eryn sets her mind to something, it’s finished. There could be a cyclone hurtling across the quidditch fields, and she’d still stay out to race.

It used to be like that with her friends back home. They’d set a challenge, and no matter what, they’d follow through. On the off occasions when Eryn didn’t win, she’d set the same one again and again, repeating the task until she won.

Besides, the fake confidence takes the weight off her shoulders a little bit. Have a go at flying. Maybe make a friend.

The girl spins around to face them with a grin. They grin right back, a challenge like that isn't something that they are willing to let go easily. Besides, racing is fun (and a chance to show off, though they would never say that aloud). Cass tends to match the energy in the room when it comes to competitions, preferring team sports themself but never letting a chance to prove their skills go easily. And a race was perfect- the rules were straightforward enough, unlike quidditch which would take ages to explain. They where also loose enough for it to be fun, the perfect test of creativity as well as skill with a broom. "Oh your on" they say to her "prepare to loose". They smile enough to make sure she understands its a friendly challenge. Cant scare all the competitors away before the game starts after all.

They briefly wonder if they should give themselves a handicap. Its far from fair as it is, but they also don't want to take the fun out of it by going to easy on her. "Since you've never raced before, no spells and no contact" they say "As for the race.. better get into the air and start practising, because I'm not going easy on you". They put one leg over their broom and push off, soaring above the rest of the class. A few other students are already on their brooms, either sporting the bored expression of someone who's done this before or a nervous smile of the newly airborne. Well... most of them are smiling. One kid looks like he's about to throw up. They lean forwards ever so slightly on their broom and circle around the girl, waiting for her to come join them. "I'm Cass by the way. Cass Ito"

Contact.

Spells.

Maybe this sport isn’t just flying circles in the sky.

Oh well. While her initial thought is worry, it quickly settles. She’s done sports before. Granted, during those she mostly had her feet on the ground. But it’ll be fine. Her chosen sports aren't exactly for the faint of hearted either.

No contact. No spells. At least the spell one is a relief. As much as she tries, her casting magic is definitely a little… unreliable. Contact, however- that’s how you play a real sport. Rugby, Roller derby, ice hockey. All three of her sports back home.

Don’t get ahead of yourself. Focus on getting off the ground first.

“Cass. Nice to meet you! Care to give me some pointers? I don’t want to be completely lost.” She knows that they’re competitive too- it shows in the grin on their face. At least it seems they won’t completely leave her to the dogs.

Or, at least, they seems to be circling around waiting for her. Either that, or doing an impression of a vulture, circling fresh meat.

With that, she pushes off the ground. She’ll admit the ascent is shaky, at best. But once she’s in the air, something clicks. It’s almost like when she used to do figure skating (Before she declared it too ‘flouncy’ and switched to hockey, of course). Once you’ve found your center of gravity, everything falls into place. Lean low, move fast. Always keep control or you will go from having some to none in seconds.

That’s not to say she’s good. No, not at all. Maybe her knowledge keeps her from outright tumbling, but it’s still obvious she’s never ridden a broom before.

“I might need to do a few laps to get used to this…” she ponders, looking up at Cass.

“No need to show off just yet,” she jokes, attempting a slow turn. “I’m just getting my bearings.”

‘Getting her bearings’ seems to consist of slow turns and random dives, but so far it’s working. Hey, at least she can steer.
OOC Note: Apologies if my replies take a little longer than usual coming up on this weekend. I have a lot on IRL, but i'll fit this in where I can.

It was almost perfect conditions for a race. The only wind around is a gentle breeze that is currently trying to make them eat hair. They brush it out of their face with irritation, hovering near the girl as she rises off the ground. The whole no spells thing is convenient for them as well, seeing as it's still early days and they aren't exactly great at any of the spells they have learnt yet. Oh well- greatness takes time after all. And they have plenty.

"Tips? Don't fall" they throw their head back and laugh like a miniature hyena trapped in a young kids body. Its mildly disturbing to watch. "Seriously though uh.. if you sit further back you will have more room to hold the handle" they say "And the flatter you can get on your broom the faster you can go". It's only fair to help out the girl as much as they can, seeing as they have the advantage with their years of shenanigans practice.

Not the girl. Eryn- she said her name was Eryn (at least till Cass decided on a nickname. none escaped without one). She didn't mention a last name though. Oh well- Cass probably wouldn't know her family anyway if she didn't recognise her on sight. Years of trips with their father had lead to them normally being able to say they knew at least one relative of most English purebloods. She looked like a halfblood anyway, seeing as she didn't know how to fly but picked up a broom fast enough. Not that it mattered- Cass was still going to utterly destroy her in this race.

They grin at her again "There is always a need to show off". They do a barrel roll to prove it, and end up spitting out a mouthful of hair. Cool, but not exactly graceful. "And do as many laps as you need" they smiled "At least make it a challenge for me".

Don’t fall?

Oh, she was not having that.

Any possible doubt had gone. Even if it killed her, she was going to beat Cass in this race. The challenge was serious now, and she wasn’t going to let anything stop her. A stale grin spits their face. “You won’t be laughing soon.”

Her playful expression shifts to focus.

She repositions, moving further back. Huh- it works! She can already feel her control shift. The broom still doesn’t feel natural though. She wondered if they made brooms with seats. At least they seemed to be more comfortable than sitting on a stick should have been.

“There is always a need to show off.” Now that’s the kind of philosophy she could subscribe to. She may not be a pureblood, but she wasn’t going to let herself stay shaking on the ground. Heights didn’t scare her. Not much did, to be honest.

After pausing to steady herself, she shot off.

Faster, faster, faster.

The wind hit her face, making her acutely aware of the nips of frost still settled in the air. She was glad she had remembered to braid her hair this morning. It was unusual for her to have it tied up. She hadn’t bothered to do it much since leaving for hogwarts- there simply hadn’t been much need yet. As it stands, she can still feel her braids tight against her back.

If there’s one thing Eryn struggles with when doing sport, it would probably be strategy. Quick decision making. She’s reckless- bold moves have always come easily. She urges her broom to go faster, faster.

Flying is freeing. Like racing back home, going faster and faster until the world becomes a blur. Faster, faster. Until everything stops and you are left with only bruises and a racing heart.

With that, she dips. The ground approaches quickly. She’s not going nearly as fast as some of the other students, but the grass still races to meet her with startling dexterity. She pulls away, landing with a rather undignified thump, rather than the crash she might have created if she had held out a minute longer.

Eryn is reckless, sure. But she’s also far from stupid. Proper dives can wait for another day. Once she knows what she’s doing a little more.

She stands up, and dusts herself off. “I think I have the basics,” she says, far too confidently for someone who just crashed. “Ready to race?”

New girl- Eryn is definitely the competitive type. To bad its not going to help her win this race. Cass is confident this is going to be an easy victory. That doesn't mean they aren't going to make it as dramatic as possible, of course. They grin back at her "Oh don't worry- I'm sure I will be". Race-challenger-girl looks more focused now. Good for her if she plans to give Cass a challenge. Hey is that a bir- nopenopenope. Focus. Gotta beat this girl first.

The girl in question is going decently fast, though without much control. They follow her, though higher and at a slower speed. Egging her on might not be a good idea when she already looks on the verge of crashing. Then again, all ideas are good ideas if pulled off though some people might disagree. They shout down some friendly "encouragement" to her "The school ghosts move fast than that!" and cast a quick glance around to make sure none of the other students get caught in the crossfire. Eryn is definitely going to crash.

Called it- she does. Sort of. She more like bounces along the ground, more of a messed up landing than a crash. She proceeds to immediately claim she has the basics, and is ready to race. Cass laughs. Their new challenger is funny as well as delusional. They hover nearby her crash landing site on their broom. "Okay" they laugh again "How does once around the trees and over to the corner". They pause and point at the far end of the training grounds. "Sound to you? First one back here and touching the ground wins" they say.
